That last confusion took too much out of Lia. She isn't going to last much longer at this rate. One last trick.
"Skala, up front and center buddy!"Once she is sure her smoke location is settled, she backs out of the smoke, hoping it will conceal her location. Standard to release Skala right next to the upper two remaining goons. Skala init 5.
She tags Espurr 2 as a swift.
She then moves back out of the smoke, hoping it'll help hide her for the moment.

You bowl the Grunt over, then promptly collapse as the Leech Seed drains what remains of your battle strength. Just as the blackness is engulfing you, you hear the familiar baying of Growlithes and the sounds of police sirens.
"Shit. Leave the other one; we need to leave. Now!"
Though you don't get to see what happens next, you are informed of the events later. The police have absolutely no idea who those thugs were, or why they kidnapped that other girl. Things have been pretty quiet in Kanto the past 20 or so years, since Team Rocket was broken up, twice. You and your Pokemon are treated for your injuries, and you even get to meet the Pewter Gym Leader herself. She, along with the Police Chief, question you on the events that transpired. When you explain that you know no more than they do, they seem concerned/confused.
They listen aptly to your description of a strange pokemon that looked kinda like a Noibat, but... was green and looked like it was part metal, like a Steel Type. Weirder still to them is how you describe it using moves that are usually exclusive to Grass Types, which Noibat can't even learn through human assistance. Still exhausted from your ordeal, you lie back to get just a little more rest. When you next wake up, it is to a pinging noise from your Pokedex, indicating that a fairly substantial monetary sum was transferred into your account. There is a message with it:
"Dear Miss Regal,
I hope this message finds you well. After some thinking, I have decided that you have more than earned a reward for your bravery earlier today. Therefore, I have deposited a fair sum of money into your account. If you will not accept it as a reward, or a gift, then consider it encouragement to come and visit me at the Gym. I want to offer you a Gym Badge as well, but it didn't feel right just leaving it there for you to discover, so I thought I'd deliver it in person. Alas, my duties as Gym Leader prevent me taking too much time away outside of emergency situations... Woops! There I go rambling again. Satori-Sama is always chastising me for it... (unintelligible series of random letters, as if she tapped the keyboard as she was thinking).
Anyway! When you visit the Gym, just tell Juri-Chan your name and she'll escort you directly to me. There is no need for you to go through the Sandstorm Challenge, as you have more than proven your strength and courage. I look forward to officially meeting you.

After a quick chat with Vincent and a message to Floyd, you find yourself outside of Pewter Gym once more. As always, Juri is waiting in the lobby for challengers to arrive. She sees you and pouts a little.
"Oh. It's you again. Mom said I don't get to stomp you this time, and I'm supposed to take you to her before anything. I assume, since you're here, that you're ready to go see her? Right. Follow me."
She leads you to one of the side doors off the main lobby that is labeled "Gym and Emergency Personnel only". Likely this is how Juri got in front of you in the Sandstorm. After about 5 minutes, she approaches an open door at the end of the hall. Even if Juri hadn't called Leader Nekura 'Mom', you'd probably be able to figure out they're related from how similar they look.
"Ah! Regal-San! So glad you could make it! Juri, you may leave." She bows in greeting to you.
Juri harrumphs and walks back to the main entrance.
"How are you feeling? Better, I hope."

As they arrive Lia recalls Los back to her ball.
"You'll get to nom later Los."
She is led silently to the leader, and she gives a bow when she enters. Normally she'd never do something but as Leader Nakura was involved in the interview yesterday and basically gave her a huge cash sum, it's hard not to at least show some respect. The badge issue, well that'll be addressed.
"I guess? Better than I was anyway. Went fishing out of the city to clear my head. Seemed to work."
She idly rubs her side, and winces when she remembers that woman's attacks. She just decides to just drop her hands and let them hang.

Lia backs up as soon as the badge is brought out.
"I'm sorry, I can't. I just can't do it. I know it's coming from a good place to do this but I... can't."
She stomps and holds her arm straight down like she's just going to fall otherwise.
"I know I went through an 'ordeal' but I don't deserve a badge! I didn't actually do anything! Maybe... Maybe if I had actually saved that girl. Maybe if we had some sort of information on that woman and the 'didn't dress for summer' gang. But right now your offering me a token of my strength for FAILING to do anything and nearly getting taken myself. All I've done since I got to Kanto is lose. The only true win I've had was with the help of a trainer, who beat me, against wild pokemon. I've been knocked out twice in two days, and I don't even know how to keep up that everything will work out with my pokemon. And... I gotta win this for myself. I gotta 'know' that I earned it. Otherwise I don't even deserve..."
The last few words come out shaky, and she looks visibly upset. She puts a hand over her face, and really only audible to herself whispers: "Stop..." She puts her hand down and looks back up.
"Otherwise I don't deserve to be here, like all the other trainers. I mean what hope do I have of even getting through the league if I don't actually 'earn' it? Not even the tournament after, or Lilith, but just the other badges. So... I don't care how many times I have to come back here and have my ass handed back to me by you, by the sandstorm, by your daughter; I'm 'winning' the badge. I need to earn it."
She stands firm, Scier joining next to her giving off the same stance.
"Please."

Leader Nekura holds out her left hand, summoning a staff from out of the sand strewn about the arena. She takes a defensive stance as Sandshrew emerges from its Poke Ball, then begins spinning her staff, causing the sand to begin whipping around.

Although Skala has to weather the ground burst, Lia kips up and dodges it entirely. Nekura's attack hits, but nothing she hasn't felt before. Lia uses Dodge to avoid Magnitude. True as commanded, Skala throws a Shadowy Punch that travels around Lia and smacks Nekura right in the chest. Skala uses Shadow Punch vs Nekura
