You walk through the automatic door of the Pewter Gym, ready and eager to make a challenge. You are greeted by a young, dark-skinned woman with white hair.
"Welcome, Trainer, to Pewter Gym. My name is Juri Massani. I assume you are here to challenge Leader Nekura for a Desert Badge? Which type of challenge would you like to undertake? Basic or Advanced?"

"Which is the one where I get to get into the fight myself and let these two have some fun? Cause that's the one I want."She flexes, showing her strength. Scier decides to land down and sit on one of her arm muscles, giving a cute smile, disconnected from the current gun show. "But uhhh, how's this whole shindig work? I'm a bit new to Kanto."Athletics (Skill Stunt! FLEX RAWWWWRRRRR)

Juri seems rather nonplussed by your display. She maintains her cheerful expression nonetheless, however.
"Ah, you are looking for the Advanced Challenge then. Don't worry, I'll be happy to explain all about how this works. It's my job, after all. Firstly, there is what I like to call the 'Sandstorm Challenge'. This is part of both the Basic and Advanced versions, and is effectively Part 1 of 2 for any Gym Battle here in Pewter. In this challenge, you will have to navigate a series of 5 checkpoints in an artificial desert environment while in Sandstorm conditions; all while evading the traps we have placed in it. During the Sandstorm Challenge, you may also be ambushed by our Gym's Pokemon or even by myself and other Trainers. All battles with other trainers during this part of the Challenge are considered to be Pokemon vs Pokemon only unless otherwise stated by the challenger (referring to the ambusher, not the ambushee). The traps can be anything from a simple pitfall to... well, anything really.
After successfully navigating this desert, you will be escorted to the Battle Arena, where you will meet and have your chance to battle Leader Nekura in a 2 on 2 match. To clarify, this means you and Leader Nekura may only have a single Pokemon out at once, but may use up to two during the course of the battle. This battle will be fought during Sandstorm conditions as well, so any Pokemon that isn't Ground, Rock, or Steel is going to have a harder time.
Are you following me so far, Miss?" ~~~ OOC mechanics version: You are navigating a desert environment during a Sandstorm (minus the HP damage portion) using a combination of Survival and Perception skills. Survival is for navigation, while Perception is for avoiding obstacles. IF you do not feel your skills are high enough for a DC 7 check, you may substitute your active Pokemon's skill checks for yours. (Ex: Let's say you have 'Patheic' rank Perception, but your Pokemon has Novice or Adept Perception. You may have your Pokemon guide you around the obstacles.)
You will do this a total of 5 times, but only make one of each check at a time unless I ask for additional checks. You can see an example of how this works in Vincent's Trainer Battles if you haven't read it yet. I only request that you keep OOC knowledge OOC, meaning Lia won't necessarily know exactly what to expect in the Sandstorm Challenge.
Make sense?

"You betcha! On board all the way. Show me where I gotta start trudging through sand!"
(Yeah it makes perfect sense. I read little tidbits of Vincents before I realized I should not utterly spoil it for myself, haha)

"Excellent! Right this way! Oh, and... good luck." Her expression darkens for just an instant as she wishes you luck, before returning to her normal, cheerful self. She guides you through the halls of the Gym to a door marked "Sandstorm". She opens the door for you, and closes it behind you after you enter.
Whenever you decide to continue, please make your first set of Survival and Perception checks. If using a Pokemon to substitute skills, please indicate which and what skill they will be using.

Lia doesn't even catch her expression, already too excited to get started, rushing in.
"Wow, ok. Yeah, no kidding there's a sandstorm. Scier, help me out here, keep a lookout while I... I don't know. Find a way through? Or something."
The Chingling gives a small salute to her master, before scanning the area around as Lia trudges forward through the sand.
"You know it 'just' occurred to me sand is going to get 'everywhere'. That's... fun."

Between you and Scier, you easily clear the first leg of the journey with no trouble. You spot any traps long before you risk falling into them.
Checkpoint 1 reached. 4 to go.
Next set of rolls, please.

As with the first, you reach the second checkpoint with little trouble. Out of nowhere, there is Gym Trainer Juri standing around waiting for you.
"Heya! I'm here to challenge you! Can't have you getting through that easily, after all. Choose your Pokemon, and let's get this started!"
Juri sends out a Trapinch! Juri's Pokemon are considered Agile, granting +4 Initiative and +1 Movement.
Initiatives: Juri - 0 Lia - 0 Lia's Pokemon - ? Trapinch - 5

"Wait, weren't you..."
Lia looks back behind her at where she supposes the entrance used to be, wondering how she got ahead of her and to her location that quickly. "Nevermind! Scier, you got this! It's time to to a legitimate trainer battle or whatever!"Scier floats forward, and puts her adorable dukes up. Lia uses Focuses training giving Scier an additional +1 to accuracy and +2 to skill checks. (Additional meaning including the use of training ealier in the day)
Now we got a bit of an issue if that 5 init includes the 4 you just have it. Scier is also at 5. Do you do simultaneous moves, or roll to see who goes?
RmHi3LaV1d20 If you do roll there you go.
Also, just as an aside... Levitate doesn't stop sandstorm damage right? Fluffwise it wouldn't make sense but by RAW it might due the typing of sandstorm the move. For now I'll assume I take the damage.

(The 5 includes Agility Training, yes. We will always roll to break ties, but a d6 is sufficient for the future.)
KDdkMKyp1d20
(Sandstorm is actually a Rock type move, not Ground; and no, the only abilities that stop it are Sand Veil, Magic Guard, and other such abilities. Only Rock, Ground and Steel Pokemon will always ignore Sandstorm damage. You won the roll, so Chingling moves first.)1d20

(Right, it 'is' a Rock type move isn't it. For some reason I was remembering ground. And a d6, got it.) "Scier, time to do the thing I taught ya! Grab that thing and don't let go! Crush it!" "Ching!"Scier charges the !Bug, and using the robes attached to her, hangs herself right below the Trapinch's big ol head. She almost looks like she's a pet collar, bell and all... before she starts squeezing the life out of the opposing pokemon. Scier attempts Grapple! [+8 total Skill Bonus from Focused Training, Focused Orders, Wrap, and Bind.] 3d6+9If the roll is not beat, Scier gains dominance! The target will loose 2 ticks of Hp, one each from Wrap and Bind. For quick reference, Grapple Rules:
Maneuver: Grapple Action: Standard AC: 4 Class: Status Range: Melee, 1 Target Effect: You and the target each make opposed Combat or Athletics Checks. If you win, you and the target each become Grappled, and you gain Dominance in the Grapple. Pokémon and Trainers that are Grappled » Are Vulnerable » Cannot take Shift Actions, or any actions that would cause them to Shift. » Gain a -6 penalty to Accuracy Rolls if targeting anyone outside of the Grapple. » Additionally, Grapple has other effects on whether the target has or doesn’t have Dominance. If a target begins their turn as a part of a Grapple but with no Dominance, they may choose to contest the Grapple as a Full Action. If they do, all participants make opposed Combat or Athletics Check. Whoever wins then may choose to either continue the Grapple and gain Dominance, or to end the Grapple. If a target has the Phasing or Teleporter Capability, they may also use those to escape from a Grapple on their turn with no check required. If a target begins their turn as part of a Grapple and has Dominance, they may take one of the following actions as a Full Action. » End the Grapple. » Secure: They gain a +3 Bonus to the next opposed check they make in the Grapple. » Attack: They may automatically hit with an Unarmed Struggle Attack. » Move: They Shift, dragging the other person in the grapple with them. Yup! All of those are correct. It's a pokemon build I've wanted to do for a while, but it's not like Supra-amazing or anything. It does make it Vulnerable, and prevents a target from doing anything involving shift attacks, plus does at least two ticks of damage ignoring any defenses/resistance. Works better on ranged attackers, and if/when Scier has more attack to work with.
Also ow, dark damage out of the gate.
Edit: Also, just wondering, what's your official 'League Battle' rules on items? Every gm I've played with does it differently. "Yes, that's 'right'. Don't waste your energy trying to beat it. In fact, we'll do that for you, won't we Scier?"Scier gives a lazy yawn toward the creature, making it sleepy! Yawn Normal Status, Can't miss. The target falls asleep at the end of their next turn.

For this game, normal "League Rules" operate by Full-Contact rules. That is, items used will take up either the Trainer's or the Pokemon's action. For the purposes of non-FC fights, it will still use up your Pokemon's action since the trainer isn't participating. So if you plan to use items a lot in non-FC fights, invest in the Medic Training Edge. "Trapinch, just Bite it again. I doubt it can take many more hits."Bite AC 2 vs JRZjPeG61d20 Flinch on 15+ Damage: 2d6+26Edit: Trapinch falls asleep! 1d20·2d6+26

Scier, although injured after the sand and that last attack, manages to nimbly dodge the second attempt, before the ground-type begins snoozing.
"That's 'if' you hit Scier, apparently."
Lia motions for Scier to come back to her. The Chingling disengages with the creature and runs back. She takes out a medicine and applies it to her pokemon.
"Geez that thing got ya good. All bite, no bark. Sand probably isn't helping."
Scier futzes a bit but accepts the healing.
Lia applies an Energy Powder to Scier, healing her for 25 hp. Scier gains the Herbal Restorative Food Buff! (Trade in for a +2 to a save check)
