It has begun. Your task. Your quest for freedom. Nevermind what the aging, depressed Professor is saying. It's stuff you already know anyway. You're only staying long enough to be polite and get your official Pokedex/Trainer License. Once that is done, you're finally able to leave. To decide which direction to go. Well, technically you can't challenge Cinnabar or Viridian without completing the other six first, but that's irrelevant.

It is aggravating to Mayu’s sensibilities that the two gyms nearest Pallet are also the two that beginning trainers are not permitted to challenge. Why? Who could thought that was a good idea? Pallet Town may be traditional for young trainers just starting on their journey, but the tradition is clearly absurd - it borders on Indigo Plateau, for heaven’s sake. If it weren’t for Professor Blue’s grandfather settling in the area... Oh well. There’s nothing to be done about it. (Yet. She makes a note to change the official starting point to someplace more sensible when she’s in charge. Saffron, perhaps? Somewhere centrally located.)
One tradition she doesn’t intend to eschew is aiming for Pewter City’s gym first. Not because it’s traditional, mind you; because both she and Alpha should fare well against the Rock and Ground-type trainers typically found there, with a little training. Hardy types, but possessed of easily exploitable weaknesses.
She sets out without further delay, keeping an eye out for interesting Pokemon as she goes. Route 1 is hardly known for its exotic selection, but one never knows. h9IhNsKC1d1001d100

Once she reaches Viridian, Mayu makes a beeline for the Pokemon Center and drops off Alpha for some well-deserved healing. Then she heads over to the general store, where she purchases a first aid kit, a few more Pokeballs, and—after a bit of consideration—a fishing rod. Route 1 is coastal, isn't it? She might have to go off-road in order to reach the shore, but that shouldn't be too much trouble.
Once her Riolu is finished recuperating, she picks him up and heads back out onto Route 1, cutting east through the bushes towards the coast to try her luck there.

Well, Route 1 turns out to not be coastal. Not really. There is a small pond next to Viridian though.

A pond will do. If it turns out to be empty, she can always backtrack to Pallet and try the beach there.

The pond has performed its duties adequately. Good work, pond. Mayu will tolerate your existence for a while longer.
Mayu spends the next few hours testing out the abilities of her new Pokemon. The Poochyena is quickly determined to be very young and mostly untested in combat; the best she can say of it is that its choice to attempt flight when she attacked was wise. Its potential? Hard to judge at this point. She will likely need to invest some effort before she can see whether it'll be worth her while to continue. Irksome. Still, she has not yet filled out her allotted team of six, and so every body is useful... for now. Marill is a more interesting case; as she suspected when she fought it, it's a reasonably mature specimen. According to the Pokedex, the species is not particularly impressive: popular among new trainers, reasonably resilient but notoriously weak when it comes to offense. It reaches its full potential fairly early, which is a decidedly mixed boon - useful in the early to middle stages of the gym challenge, but perhaps falling behind later on. She will have to keep a close eye on its performance.
Neither of them particularly impresses her when it comes to endurance. Not unexpected; they are only wild Pokemon. Alpha has had years to get used to her intensive training regimen. She will accustom them to it slowly - no point in overwhelming them.
The next day, she heads north into Viridian Forest. Time to look for Grass Pokemon; there should be plenty in this environment. WqkF5m1L1d1001d100

Upon reaching the threshold of Viridian Forest, Mayu finds herself accosted with the strangest thing she can claim to have encountered in her lifetime. A bright blue text box floating in the air in front of her. It says only one thing: "Enter Viridian Forest Dungeon? Y/N" Upon pressing "Yes", the box disappears and a much more ominous-looking version of the iconic forest appears. Looking upon it gives one an almost oppressive feeling of danger and strangeness.

After several instances of absolutely nothing interesting happening, Mayu happens across the strangest thing. A young woman (approximately her age) seems to be resting by the base of a tree. There are the unconscious forms of many a Pokemon around her, and her attire (while objectively pretty) is damaged and dirty as if she has been fighting for some time. At her side is a small, blue-black Pokemon that leaps to its feet as you approach. It, too, looks banged up. Really banged up, in fact. This lavender-haired girl also appears to be wearing a cloth across her eyes for some reason. A strange spear-like object leans up against a tree on her other side.

Mayu halts a respectful distance away, examining the girl and her Pokemon. They don't appear to be in any shape for a battle; pity. She pulls out her Pokedex and begins consulting it to identify the species on display here, starting with the conscious one.

The conscious one is Deino, a Dark/Dragon Type. It is unique not only in its typing, but also in that it and its evolution Zweilous are blind. The unconscious Pokemon are the usual fare for a forest; grass-types, bug-types, even a bird or two.

Butterfree, Cascoon, Vivillion... not unexpected given the environs, but disappointing. Mayu supposes if there had been anything more interesting the other trainer would probably have snapped them up, she seems fairly competent. Oh well. Nothing more to see here.
On the verge of moving on, she pauses. The other trainer hasn't greeted her or anything, but being blind maybe she doesn't know Mayu is here. (Or more likely, doesn't realize that she's a human; her situational awareness must be better than that, or she wouldn't be out here.) Is Mayu supposed to do that? What is the etiquette for greeting travelers one doesn't intend to challenge, anyway? Her education was somewhat lacking on that point.
After an interval that would be extremely awkward if the only witnesses weren't too blind or socially indifferent to notice, she says, "You do not appear to be in ideal shape to battle."

The girl smiles softly. "Yes, it would seem I'm in a bit of a predicament. This does not feel like the normal Viridian Forest, and these Pokemon are quite a bit tougher than I anticipated. One of my Pokemon is already out of commission, and my Deino and I are not in much better shape, as you can surely tell." Deino makes some sort of noise indicating that it would take on the whole forest if it had to! Silly dragon-types and their pride. "If you were wondering, yes, I was aware of your presence. I was curious as to whether you would approach or pass me by. Some people would see Deino and avoid me on principle just for that. Oh, my name is Faith by the way."

"Is there some principle on which I should be avoiding a Deino?" Mayu asks. "I'm not familiar with the species."

"Ah, that would explain your lack of reaction." Faith says. "They are blind from birth, and often cause injuries to themselves by running into objects in the caves where they are most known to dwell. This causes them to be in pain, and combined with the natural aggressiveness of both the Dark and Dragon types, of which Deino is both, you can see how most people who know of them might be wary."

"I see." Mayu considers this. "Yet trained Pokemon typically do not attack without provocation. As, indeed, yours is not attacking me." Which explains why she had been waiting to see Mayu's reaction, come to think; an interesting test of character. Mystery solved.
"Have you become disoriented? The edge of the forest is reasonably close by."

"Is it? I'm afraid the odd nature of this place has thrown off my senses quite a bit." Faith admits. "I fear I may have become turned around at some point and begun walking in circles. Normally my Sigilyph would aid me with re-orientation, but as it is currently unconscious from the many battles it has fought on my behalf, that is no longer an option." She pauses a moment, then seems to come to a conclusion. "Would you, perhaps, be willing to aid me in reaching the exit? In either direction? Even a general sense of direction would be ever so helpful."

"Hm." Mayu thinks this over a moment. Technically out of her way, since she planned to find at least one more fight before returning, but considering how the last one went maybe it's better to play it safe anyway. "I suppose I could do that. One of my own Pokemon could use a trip to the Pokemon Center. Come; it's this way."

Faith smiles. "Ah, thank you Miss." Faith manages to haul herself up off the ground by using her spear-staff as leverage. She follows dutifully behind Mayu as they make their way back to the Viridian exit.

Mayu retraces her steps precisely, to better avoid unwanted encounters.

It doesn't take that long to reach the Viridian exit to the forest. No sooner have you and Faith stepped out than the oppressive aura of the forest vanishes like it never existed. Looking back, you now see the normal, bright forest behind you. Weird how that works, innit?
