Good. After this, Mayu inquires what the procedure for facing this Gym is. She's given to understand that either a gauntlet of subordinate trainers, a series of puzzles or tests, or both are traditional?

For this Gym, there is a singular 'puzzle' of sorts. A survival test, if you will. You need only navigate your way through the indoor desert beyond the door. There is, of course, also the matter of which challenge you want: Basic (Non-contact) or Advanced (Full-contact). By default, this only applies to the Gym Leader herself, mind. However, you are free to attempt to persuade Gym Trainers to battle you directly as well. Some may even accept.

... desert. Mayu expects to be either very good at that, or very bad. In the meantime, she would like to see if any of the Gym's trainers are available to battle. Best to get a sense for how the Gym operates before she goes to the top.

There are a couple of Gym Trainers available for a 'practice' match for those who want to test their skills against the Gym without issuing a Challenge right away. These trainers aren't quite as skilled as Juri (the Leader's daughter/heir to the Gym), naturally, but they should provide a decent baseline skill level.

Just what she's looking for. Mayu informs one of them she would like to battle. (And makes a note of this 'Juri' for later.)

The battle concluded, Mayu decides she'd like one more Pokemon to help round out her team before she challenges the Leader; Sigma will not be of much use here, after all. She heads west to see what Route 3 has to offer.

Mayu returns to town with Miltank in tow. While she waits for the Pokemon Center to work its healing magic sufficiently advanced technology, she decides to see if there's anyone about who might be interested in trading. She's willing to offer Marill or Miltank, and is interested in Remoraid or Popplio.

For the Miltank, Mayu is offered a Tropius or Drifloon. For Marill, a Fletchling or a Remoraid.

Done and done. Mayu knows from experience that Remoraid grows up to be a living artillery piece, and as for Tropius... well, to be honest she's barely heard of it, but the thing is bizarrely fascinating to her. It's big enough to serve as a mount, so if nothing else she's bound to get some use out of it that way, right?
She now has the extra Pokemon she wanted to confront the gym, but... two of hers are as yet untested. She'd like to see how they do in a fight before taking them into that. After a bit of thought, she decides to head into Viridian (extra danger dungeon edition) to see if she can find a fight around the edges. Point 19 - qLh8lJMz1d8 Point 14 - 1d81d8·1d8

Alpha and Sigma stand guard over Mayu in the woods long enough for her to regain consciousness and groggily make her way back into civilization. Sleep time now. Gym tomorrow.

Morning comes, as it is wont to do. It's time. Mayu puts her Pokemon through a particularly grueling training session. Alpha is used to it; the others, less so. They'll learn. (They had better.) By the end of it she feels like she has a handle on their respective strengths and weaknesses. Beta and Sigma are quick and hard-hitting, but relatively fragile; Epsilon is powerful, but sluggish and lacking in fine control; Lambda is well-rounded. She could keep training, or look for a sixth to round out her team, but... no. No more putting this off. Today she will have her first true brush with the League.
She goes to Pewter Gym to issue her challenge.

Mayu is greeted by another of the white-haired Gym members, who goes over the basic rules if necessary and inquires as to the type of Challenge that Mayu would like to issue.
"Would you like to do a Basic Challenge, or Advanced?" They ask.

"Advanced." If she can't beat the first gym in a full-contact match, she certainly can't hope to compete with the Elite Four.

The Gym member nods and takes Mayu to the door leading into the 'Desert Survival' area. The instructions are simple: Make it to the other side. You have one full day to accomplish this, though nobody has ever needed the entirety of it. Once Mayu is inside, the door leading back to the front of the Gym is locked.
Mayu may have one Pokemon out with her to aid in Survival (navigation) and Perception (spot traps) skill checks. She and/or her Pokemon need to roll 3 of each of these to start.

This shouldn't be too bad, Mayu thinks. Between her own abilities and a Water Pokemon, she's more than capable of protecting herself against the dangers of heat and thirst. She just has to make her way across without getting lost, or stumbling into any unexpected problems. Survival: GwL7Bom23d6 3d6 3d6

It is surprisingly nowhere near as hot and dry as you would have expected. This is likely to avoid actual death of challengers. The blowing sand is nothing more than a nuisance. Navigation is not terribly difficult, all things considered. There are numerous, ankle-sized pitfalls that Fennekin helps Mayu avoid. A few are even noted to have Trapinch hiding at the bottom; likely the ones who dug the pits in the first place.
Three more each of Survival/Perception.

You skillfully avoid further pitfalls, but get the feeling you got turned around somewhere. It's then that you spot a figure in the distance. Rapidly approaching them, you find a Gym Trainer. She introduces herself as Juri Massani. She'll take you on in a Double Battle. If you win, she'll point you in the right direction to finish the challenge. If you lose, you'll have to find your way on your own.
Double Battle: 2 Pokemon out per side, no trainer combat.

"I have only three, so we'll just say two. Don't want to wear you down too much before your big match with the Leader." Juri smirks.
