Bayleef shifts enough to allow Mayu to crawl into bed and under the covers before settling down next to it. Just to be close enough without causing problems.

Acceptable. Not desired, of course. That would be frivolous. But... Mayu will allow it.
(Even if part of her can feel her parents frowning at the indulgence.)
The next day she rises bright and early, purchases some supplies to replenish her dwindling supplies of Pokeballs and healing items, and sets out south for Route 11 and Vermillion City.

Due to it being "bright and early", there are no other trainers out on the road and the various and sundry Wild Pokemon leave Mayu alone. The trip to Vermillion City is boring and uneventful. Upon reaching the city, it becomes clear that this Gym still lives up to its former leader's reputation. The Pokemon Center appears crowded with "newbie" trainers who got their asses handed to them by the exotic Electric-Type Pokemon that Leader Chengse commands. A few of the trainers even have what seem like scorch marks on their bodies. Likely from going toe-to-toe with the Leader herself. Oh, yes, that jogs a memory of Mayu's. She recalls that this is one of two Gyms that specifically require Trainer Participation/Advanced Challenges. Should be fun.

Mayu hesitates: she's already challenged and lost at the Celadon Gym, it feels strange to go off and face a second while she's supposed to be training for her second attempt. But... there's no actual rule against it, is there? Or even a good reason why she shouldn't. Gym challenges are training as much as anything is. More, maybe, since they're harsher than the average trainer she meets. And from the Vermillion Gym's reputation, she suspects this one will suit her temperament more than Celadon's odd puzzles and Pokemon-only battles.
She enters.

The desk clerk eyes Mayu up and down before asking for her credentials. She's obviously a trainer (nobody else has reason to enter), so a quick check of the system queues her up for her challenge. Of course, by "queue" they mean "you're on in five". To challenge the leader, in keeping with the general theme/traditions of Pokemon Gyms, Mayu must face off against a Gym Trainer. Just the one. The Gym Trainer fights in Double Battles (2 trainers, 4 pokemon on the field), but for the Gym Trainer, trainer participation is not permissible. Defeat the Gym Trainer and you immediately get to fight Leader Chengse. No breaks. No healing. Hope you do well~!
