Ryu, as if having read Clay's mind, leaves the room and heads off to practice elsewhere. Master Nob returns the bow to Clay and asks how he's been.

Clay grimaces slightly. "I mean, I'd tell you, but I dunno if you'd believe me. Not unless you talk to the people at the Guild a lot." Clay never tried to keep track, before, of whether many people from the Adventurer's Guild had come to the dojo.
"It's been... interesting. Met a lot of people. I actually sort of figured out what the deal with talking to Pokémon is - it's a bit like an Aura thing? Instructor Mason over at the Fighting Branch - he's a nice guy, you'd like him - has been helping me out with it. I can't punch people with it the way he can but I did figure out a couple of neat tricks..." He pulls himself up short. "But there's this... other thing. Which I should really tell you about from the beginning... and seriously in private. Can we go over here...?"
If Master Nob doesn't object, Clay will lead him over to a side room, and once they're shut in he'll start in on explaining everything. "I met these three other trainers on my way to the Guild, and it all started on the first night when we all had the same nightmare..." He'll go through it all - the nightmares, the Usurper prophecy, Yveltal, and their efforts to figure out what to do now.
"... So that's where we are now. Kinda flailing around, looking for something to grab on to." Clay lets out a long sigh. "And since I'm back in the city, I decided I should visit, 'cause I'm overdue to, and, well... talking with you always kinda makes things come out clearer, Master. And I could use some clarity right now." It wasn't even that it was complicated, necessarily, but Clay was starting to worry that he'd missed something incredibly obvious about their current problems.

Master Nob listens quietly as Clay describes everything he and his compatriots have been through in the last few months. When Clay is finished, the aged martial arts instructor heaves a sigh. "Honestly Clay? This all sounds way out of my league. Aura? Legendary Pokemon and country-wide death threats?" He shakes his head. "I don't know what I can say to you Clay, that hasn't been said before. I want to help you in any way I can, of course, but based solely on what you've just told me it sounds like you've long since surpassed my teachings. I only wish I could do more for you. More than just saying 'I believe in you'."

Clay rubs the back of his neck. "I mean, it's still nice to hear that. Especially when it's felt like we weren't really getting much of anywhere for a little while. I also kinda wanted to make sure you knew about this, because when things hit they're going to move fast, and they're gonna get really dangerous really quickly. If things go bad you guys might need to get out."
He brings a finger up to his lips. "Oh, much less serious thing. Somebody suggested this to me... did you ever find any trace of my human parents? It's not a big deal, I've just kinda been wondering more about them lately."

Master Nob stiffens briefly, then sighs heavily. "No, Clay. I'm afraid I did not. I followed up every possible lead I could over the time I've known you, but I never did discover anything. I'm sorry."

"That's okay. I figured it was a long shot. Thanks for trying, at least." Maybe the Guild knows something - if he wound up out in the wild, maybe his parents were adventurers. Though he'd have to figure out just where he would go to ask about former Guild members...
He takes a deep breath. "Like I said. It's not a big deal, compared to... the other thing. Just something I've been more curious about lately." Judging from the only parental examples he's had anything close to direct experience of - Holly's sister and what little Rei's said or implied about her dad - he might be better off having found his own role models anyway.
"Thanks for stopping to talk. I know you've got a whole dojo full of people still training here."

Master Nob smiles at Clay, ruffling his hair a bit. "I always have time for my students. Former or current. You can come to me any time, Clay."

After parting ways with Tiki and Zoey, Clay heads back to the Guild. Now, the question is how one gets to the Archives, since the only way down he's ever seen just leads to the Rock, Ground, and Fighting branches.
He hasn't actually been to talk to the people at the front desk in a while, and he's not sure if they'll still be there or if they've decamped with one of the branches that did so - he'd expect them to mostly be from Normal Branch, after all. He'll wander over there anyway, since it's the obvious place to ask for directions.

Surprisingly, Front Desk Person is still there, dutifully continuing in their role as person-who-is-asked-all-the-questions. They take Clay into Normal Branch, and then down a little-used hallway within it that leads to a set of stairs. They inform him that the Archives are at the bottom of the stairs. Someone is always on duty watching/guarding the door.

"Thanks for the help!" Before they head back to the desk, he adds, "Hey, uh, be careful, okay? Just in case."
He'll head down the stairs and pull out the pass Genevieve gave him to show the guard. "Hey! Name's Clay. I've got permission from Miss G to look in the Archives."

The silent guard glances over his pass, then unlocks the door. There is another person on the inside. Clay is instructed to speak with inside-person when he wishes to leave. Beyond that, they are not required to assist him (though may do so if asked).

Clay decides to ask the inside-person, just because he's still learning how any sort of library works and he's never been down here before. "Hey, uh, sorry to bother you, but it's my first time down here. I've got two big things I'm looking for - the founding of Dark Branch, and records of Guild members from, uh... woulda been fourteen, fifteen years ago I think. If you know where I'd find those, could you point me in the right direction, please?"

Thankfully, inside-person doesn't seem bothered by Clay's query. The Archives may not be accessed often, but they're still enormous. It takes nearly an hour for inside-person to lead Clay around to find all the books on the requested topics, simply because the sections in question are so far apart. Once Clay is settled in, they point out a 'book return' set onto the wall nearest the door. Apparently, when he's finished, he's expected to place the books within and their return will be taken care of.
On The Founding of the Dark Branch: There isn't even an entire volume on this, it's just a small blurb within a book talking about the founding of the Guild in general. Due to this, there really isn't a lot of helpful information to be gained. Clay re-learns what he already knew: D'Mara is the founder of the Branch in question, as well as its current leader. The Branch is only a few years old, and to date is still among the smallest of the Branches, roughly tied with Steel for number of active members. Coincidentally, Steel Branch was founded mere months after Dark. Details on the events surrounding either of these Branches is almost non-existent.
On the Founding of the Adventurer's Guild: As it turns out, the Adventurer's Guild is much older than it seems. The building itself is over half a century old, and has been in use nearly as long. However, it was only recently (2 years ago) that the Guild received official recognition from the crown, and began seeing a large influx of new members. Fifteen years ago, the Guild consisted of what would later become the Normal, Grass, Fire, and Water Branches.
Back then, however, the 'Branches' as they are known today did not exist. The Guild was little more than a fancy gathering place for people who wanted to aid others and be a part of a greater organization. Clay recognizes the names of the leaders. They are the same as they are now, which means that either these women are much older than they appear, or they became leaders around his age. Prior to this, the names of the 'Guild Leader(s)' were different. There is, in fact, a roster within the Archives that this book references, which was helpfully retrieved during the book collecting journey earlier.
Adventurer's Guild Roster (circa Year 493): There are a lot of names here. Since the Fighting Branch as it is now didn't exist, and the list is organized alphabetically, it seems unlikely that Clay is going to be able to puzzle out who his likely parents were based on name alone. He doesn't even know his last name, after all. However grim it may seem at first glance, there is also a marker by each name indicating whether or not they are alive at the time of the writing of this book (the book itself was written only five years ago). Alas then that Clay also spots a disclaimer involving the list that informs him of the fact that there may be names that are missing or incorrect. In any case, based solely upon this list in front of him, Clay is able to determine that at least half of the names on this list are deceased as of five years ago. Whether some big event happened fifteen years ago and killed off a lot of people or something happened to them in the interim is unclear. The only way to be sure is to ask someone who was there and knew these people.

Given that Clay is only just getting to be proficient at reading, it takes him a while to get through the books to his satisfaction (or lack thereof). And Rei was right about one thing: this stuff really isn't quite as helpful as he'd hoped. Nothing super significant seems to have been happening when the Dark Branch was founded, at least not that the Guild was paying attention to - though that does tell him that if anyone knows anything about it, Lady Sorra is probably a good place to start asking.
Seeing the names of the Guild Leaders fifteen years ago does make him wonder about how young they must have been - then again, he does know that at least one of them has a daughter around his age, so maybe they've just... aged really well? And they all seem about the same age, so maybe they were just all friends who wound up in charge at the same time. In any case, that puts Miss G, Sage, and Naida at the top of his list of people to ask about that time period. And maybe Ashandra as well, assuming he wants to deal with how frustrating talking to her is, and assuming his departure from their last meeting doesn't result in her frying him the minute she sees his face.
It *is* a little disheartening to discover that the Guild had a population explosion right at the time when he wants to be able to pick out specific people from it, and that even the fact that the people he's interested in are probably dead or missing doesn't narrow it down much. Either adventuring is a high-risk line of work even when there aren't prophecies involved, or something happened sometime in those ten years that killed a lot of people. Which... in itself is kind of worrying, considering those visions of D'Mara with an army of people wearing the Guild's symbol. Maybe that isn't her mind-controlling people? He isn't sure if bringing people back from the dead is better, really, but it does seem a little more likely for the God of Death to be doing, even if D'Mara's already shown that she can make puppets of people.
With a page of shakily-scrawled notes, Clay sighs and carries the books over to the slot the inside guard pointed out. Now the question is what to do with his information? He is right where he can talk to at least three of the people associated with what he's learned. Of course, he may have to wait until he gets somewhere with a window so he can see just how long he actually spent down in the Archives before he decides on his next step.
He nods to the person watching the door from the inside. "Well, thanks for all your help. Unless there's something obvious missing, I think I'm done for now."

Inside-person nods in acknowledgement before unlocking the door for him and allowing Clay to leave. Back on 'ground level', in the main hall, Clay is able to discover that he spent at least several hours down there, as it's nearly dark out now.

"Wow, I guess I spent all day down there. I was afraid of that..." He shakes his head. Looks like there might not be time to get up to Cerulean tonight. On the other hand, he might have time to try and dig up some more information on the time around when he was born and his parents presumably went missing, from someone who the book said was there...
He heads toward Grass Branch. He doesn't really want to talk to Ashandra unless he has to, and he has no idea how friendly Naida is - and he definitely needs to talk to her, rather than Calli - but Sage seemed nice, and maybe she'll have found out something interesting about that plant. Unless the place is already shut up for the night, he'll ask if Lady Sage has time to talk.

Seems like Grass Branch has mostly turned in for the night, save for a few night owls maintaining nocturnal plants. Guess he'll have to wait for morning then.

Clay decides to head back to Celadon; maybe he try to get in contact with Lady Sorra in the morning, since dealing with Dark Branch is sort of a priority. He trudges back toward the edge of town and saddles up on Red Child to start making the journey back to the capital.

A few hours later, Clay finds himself standing before the closed gates of Celadon Castle Town. Turns out, the entire city has an effective curfew. At dusk, the gates are sealed for the night, and don't open again until the dawn. Guess he's camping out tonight.

"Welp. Been too long since I spent a night outside anyway."
Clay heads a little way back from the city walls and a little off the road, so as not to incur the displeasure of any early travelers or otherwise get himself stomped on. He sets Baloo to watch out for intruders until midnight, with orders to have Flower take over afterwards, and for both of them to make plenty of noise if someone does turn up, then settles down for the night. He's going to have to remember about the gate in the future...
