The two of them walk along, following the stream. Along the way, they find more evidence of this guck in trace amounts on the walls and the floor along the path. As they head down, they can hear moving water and eventually, it leads to a waterfall leading down into the inky black.
Now what?

Melissa peers down into the darkness suspiciously. "I don't have any Water-types. And even if I did, I don't think I'd want to expose them to whatever contaminants are in this stream. Either of you have any ideas for getting a look down there? If not, I'll run a few thousand volts into the water and see if anything objects."

Alexa pipes up.
"Well unless you had a huge battery, the amount of water I hear down there won't feel it. There were a few entrances back that look like they went down unless you guys got a secret flying mount? Or a shit ton of rope?"

"Won't feel it? Won't feel it?" Melissa huffs, the generator in her arm already cycling up with am ominous rising hummmmm? "We'll see about that!"
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!
The lightning crackles away into the distance, but aside from the shrieking of distressed Zubat there's no response. Melissa harrumphs. "Fine, yes, let's backtrack and find a way down."

"I mean, I got some rope and a flashlight, but not that much. Probably couldn't get a good look at the bottom." Nori leans over the edge with his flashlight anyway, trying to see if he could make anything out in the blackness below. If he can't from here, he kind of doubts lowering it on a rope would be that much better. And privately, healthier body or not, he has no particular plans to climb down there himself.
He pulls back quickly when he hears Melissa's arm charging up. He knows what that noise means by now, and does not wish to be sticking out in the misty darkness when it fires.
"Yeah, backtrack sounds like the best plan. I'm not exactly planning on sending Ordira swimming in toxic waste. Not like she can talk to tell us what she saw anyway." He'll turn and take the lead on the way back, looking for a likely entrance to head downward.

Heading down through some side tunnels, you feel your way going down. So there's that at least. Always on the lookout for pokemon, you guys find...
A Seviper coiled up in a corner.
A Skarmory using it's sharp beak to peck some rocks apart.
A Darumaka in a little alcove by itself.
A Lucario seemingly practicing some moves.

Nori gives a low whistle as he watches the Skarmory taking apart rocks, then catches sight of the Darumaka tucked away in a little alcove. Keeping half an eye on where the Skarmory is, he ducks over to the alcove and looks down at the little Fire-type.
"Hey, there, little guy. What are you doing hiding out over here?"

Nori seems to surprise him, but strangely not 'scare' it. Mostly just didn't expect a head outta nowhere. After a good look at Nori, it settles back down against the wall. It just simply motions to the tracks on the ground, all coming from below. It pantamimes shaking (like an earthquake), and then moving into the alcove, safe and out of the way. Looks like that tremor you all felt earlier scared some pokemon (Maybe the pack you fought, even?) and this little guy decided it was best to just chill out of the way as pokemon ran past. Why it's still here? Looks pretty cozy, probably just got comfy and didn't feel like moving yet!

"Ohh, I get it." Nori comes around the corner and plops himself down on the floor, though he's trying not to block the alcove off and make the Darumaka feel boxed in. That seems like a good way to get flaming poop to the face.
"Don't suppose you saw what caused that? I didn't think there were earthquakes around here unless somebody made them." He's mostly just chitchatting to help keep the tone calm; he doesn't really expect an answer, even if the little guy could actually talk. "Y'know, I've been looking for strong Pokémon. Putting a team together. If you're up for it, I can help you get even stronger. I gotta warn you, the training's tough, but the results... well, you don't have to be afraid of anything, then. You can make the earth shake yourself."

It shakes it's head at the 'what caused it' bit, other than 'earthquake from somewhere'. But it's game to become stronger!
(If Nori wants it, Level 28, female, gentle, Hustle and Inner Focus)
After Nori boops it with a ball, there's another shaking! This time a lot more violent, and Alexa loses her balance and has to lean up against the wall.
"Uhhhh, THAT felt close. Like... in the mountain. Right where we are headed."
(If anyone wants any more of the pokemon, last chance before we head on)

While Nori was talking to the Darumaka, Melissa was making a beeline for the Lucario. "You! Justify your existence in 50 words or less!"

The Lucario looks back at Melissa, it sniffs slightly and then throws a blast right near Melissa's head, roasting the rock behind her. Also probably a few stray hairs.
It them smirks.

"Great! Hm, a great ape, gonna be even greater... Konga, I think." Nori's been trying to make sure his Pokémon's species names get integrated into their nickname, but frankly, Elegantua already strains his ability to pronounce her name dramatically, so he's not going for something like Darumakonga. Three syllables seems like about his limit; he'll leave the long erudite-sounding ones to Melissa.
If Nori was super dashing, he'd rush over to catch Alexa when the tremor wobbled her. Unfortunately he doesn't do a much better job of keeping his feet himself. The nice thing about being in a tunnel is that the walls aren't too far away if you need them, even if he has to work not to fumble the newly-caught Konga's Pokéball.
He'll make his way over to check on her anyway. "What even the heck. You'd think there was a Tyranitar eating the mountain or something." He frowns. "Maybe if we find the source of the tremors we can stop it. This sure doesn't seem natural. We'll get down there soon... just a sec."
He looks around for that Skarmory that was breaking up rocks, hoping it hasn't been scared off by the tremor... or riled up too much. Not that he doesn't have a growing team of badasses to deal with unruly birds.

"Hah! Very thrifty retort, I like that. But two can play at this game!" Melissa then fires a bolt of lightning past the Lucario's head.

Nori- The Skarmory is indeed there, apparently the tremor caught it off guard as it was pecking and it fell off the rock. Now it's looking at the rock pretty annoyed. How dare it shake when it was sharpening it's beak!
Melissa- The Lucario looks past it's head at the zapped rock behind it. It chuckles before throwing another energy ball past Melissa, this time on the other side. Seems to like this game of energy blast chicken!

Melissa grins, and begins gathering power for an extra-large lightning blast. ZZZZZZT!
(Charge, then Thunderbolt)

Lucario nods approvingly. It likes this human. It seems to want to come along.
(Lucario is 28, Male, Calm, Steadfast/Parry)

"Tremors, huh? I got a proposition for you." Nori crosses his arms, leaning against the wall near the Skarmory. "I think something's causing these shakes. I'm planning on heading down and seeing what's up, maybe giving them what for if they don't look like they're gonna stop. 'Cause I don't really appreciate earthquakes when I'm in tunnels either. If you come with me, you could get a crack at 'em."
He cracks his knuckles. It's a little practiced... mostly because he has practiced it. It's not like he hits people very often, barring catching one Beedrill in the back recently. "What do you say? Want to see if we can't tell whoever's shaking the mountain what we think about that?"

The Skarmory pops up and squawks, clearly game to fight the thing that angered it.
Skarmory (27, female, mild, sturdy/intimidate)

With new pokemon in tow, the group make their way down the tunnels, and finally make their way down the caves, and thankfully Alexa's hunch was right, it does lead to the side of a huge cavern and underground lake. It's real dark down here. Basic stuff can be seen but the water is dark so beyond the surface nothing can be seen. There's also a huge jagged cliff wall very close that sprouts up from the lake and goes up into the ceiling. Usually cave walls are smooth, especially near water, so that's a bit odd.
