(Inspired by Lockdown’s awesome campaign idea, plus the fact that people were looking for a good space campaign)
The year is 3500 AD. Thanks to the discovery by brilliant scientist Satoshi Tajiri that psychic energy can be used to facilitate faster-than-light travel, humanity has spread across the Milky Way galaxy, along the way uplifting their Pokémon to sapience and creating sapient robots to add to their numbers.
But there are no aliens, though some evidence (such as planetary Pokémon variants) insists aliens existed at one point. Humanity is supreme, but also alone.
Humans, Pokémon, and AI all ply the stars in spaceships of all sizes, utilizing Tajiri Drives to both power their ships and travel faster than light. Psychic humans or uplifts interface with the drives via implants in their necks, effectively turning spaceships into extensions of their bodies. Nowadays, no spaceship can fly without a Tajiri Drive and a psychic to fly it.
The galaxy has been divided between several megacorporations, who use combinations of slave labor, corporate armies, and indentured governments to keep up with their cutthroat rivals. Focus on profit over safety have led to increased lawlessness throughout the galaxy.
You are one of the 99%- mercenary, outlaw, mechanic, ne’r-do-well, pencil pusher, doctor, lawyer- it doesn’t matter. In the slums of Yahooey City on the desert planet Coras, you and your Pokémon just try to get by. Or, at least, that’s what you usually do. That crank message sure seemed genuine, and the paycheck being offered was way too good to be passed up…
You do not necessarily know each other, though doing so will help. A mysterious benefactor has offered each of you a lot of money if you crew their ship, no questions asked, and you decided to accept, being in dire financial straits yourself (debt, bad divorce, terrible job market, tanking business, etc.)
What adventures await you in the darkness ofSPESSS space?
Basic information:
PTU version 1.05, up to the most recent playtests. No 2.0.
Start at trainer level 1
One level 10 starter, one level 5
One egg move and (if going as a Mentor) one tutoring to divide among your Pokémon
$10,000 cash to spend on what you like. Prices are as listed in the handbooks; better gear exists, but it’s restricted to corporate operatives. If you don’t spend it all, you keep the leftovers- but why bring it on this uncertain voyage?
No TBatD or GoT
DPDoM is allowed, and necessary.
Glitch Bender is allowed, but not immediately. GM fiat only.

On AIs and Sapient Pokémon
AIs tend to be human-shaped and human-sized, with comparable abilities (anything else, like an R2-D2 style robot, has to pass my approval.) They do not suffer from essence loss due to upgrades, whereas humans and Pokémon do. The downside to this is that they cannot utilize psychic classes.
Any Pokémon can be sapient, and any Pokemon is allowed, though Medium sized ones are recommended. Sapient Pokémon are treated as normal people, with the following exceptions:
• Sapient Pokémon use stats like a normal trainer. They do not use their usual stats, and thus do not follow the base relations rule. Their abilities are not determined by species, but as if they were human. They retain any capabilities (so a ghost-type would have phasing, for example.)
• They do not gain STAB unless they have the Type Expertise feature.
• They do not learn moves or abilities from classes; instead they use their move set as listed in the Pokedex. Abilities are gained at trainer levels
• They level up like a normal trainer, and can evolve if applicable. Yes, this means you cap out at 50. No, I don’t care if you want to go higher.
• They can take Poke-Edges along with normal edges, though they do not need to spend tutor points to do so.
• They cannot be caught by Pokeballs, due to genetic tampering.
On a more personal note, human-Pokémon couplings are discouraged by me (and by several in-game puritan sects), but if you absolutely must, I won’t stop you.
You sick freak.

House Rule: Leveling Up
Keeping track of XP and levels has always been a pain for me, so the following rules are in effect:
Pokemon do not get XP. Instead, they level up when I decree (usually at the end of an adventure). This is to encourage you to seek other ways of solving a problem; use flamethrower to melt the door shut instead of trying to fight the pirates, for example.
Sometimes, I'll say "You get X amount of levels to divide." This means you take X and divide the levels among your Pokemon as you wish.
For example: Brock gets 5 levels to divide. He gives three to Onix and two to Geodude. He could just as easily given all of them to Onix and none to Geodude.
Trainers level up as per the core rulebook. Get in fights and catch them Pokemon!
