Well they both seemed pretty accepting of her Lock cases. Let's not tell them that most leagues ban affecting pokeballs in that way, but hey, why break their naive hearts? And the Professor seemed cool about it, so Erica doubts it'll be an issue. As long as they stay on Lima. And nobody questions their weird pokeballs.
Erica was sort of half-listening to Haruka, but hears her mention the food. Well if she can make more... Erica takes out the food, and traces a line with it around Gapic's head, who takes a second to register something is happening. After finally noticing the food, he begins eating it.
"Think I'm getting him now. I'd make a joke about Swimoles and staring up at the rain until they would drown but... Water type. They'd probably be ok if they did that."
She turns to the others, and stands.
"Well we can do that training bit, and then I'd like to get moving. Prof kinda left before I could get a chance to talk to her. Would like to get to that meeting tomorrow."

As the group decides their next step, the three new trainers move to a clear field nearby where Dean explains basically how battles work and the training routines, starting with a simple warm up. Sentinel and Kasai quickly get in the correct mood - the first eager to practice and the latter treating it all like a game - but Erica has a hard time making Gapic move much. Once the group starts practicing their moves, however, the water pokémon is much more complacent. Despite seemingly not paying attention to the trainer, the swimole shoots bubbles at Erica's commands, alongside the crocoal's flaming pieces of coal and the iguard's seed. Once moves are covered, the trio practice a bit of aiming and evading, with Dean commanding most of the attacks while the girls focus on dodging. A little less than an hour later, with both pokémon and trainers sweating from the efforts, the group seems ready to start their trip. Looking at the region map, it seems the way to Etaoin - marked as Route 1 - is quite straightforward. They have no trouble finding it either, a path of dirt leading outside the small settlement and heading east. The path seems to be regularly used and mantained, as the grass around it is kept short, with small bushes and patches of flowers scattered across. You can see the ocean about a mile to the south, and the grasslands to the north seem much less kempt, with much taller grass and trees, although fields can be see in the distance as well. The clock on the pokédex indicate it's a little past 3 p.m. now, and the sun is still quite high on the sky. With Etaoin being about 30 miles away, even if you rush it seems spending the night on the route is inevitable, bu it's more than enough time to reach Professor Lotus' lab in the appointed time. You can apply your training Feature and Experince Training to pokémon. Remember Experience Training can be applied to a number of pokèmon equal to your Command Rank, but they don't need to be yours only. Since Dean has a Command of Novice, he can train 3 pokémon and give each a bonus +5 experience, which means he could train all your starters, which would make sense since he's teaching you how to train. At least this time. You must now decide how you're gonna travel and what your focus is. There are basically three ways you can go: - Going through the route is the quickest and cleanest, and the pokémon you may find are those more accustomed to humans and who woulnd't hide in the tall grass as much.
- You can take a little detour and travel by the beach. It's pretty quick as well, and you may find pokémon with more aquatic tendencies.
- You can also go north and walk trough the "wilder" grasslands. It will take more time, but pokémon there are more pokémon available.
Regardless of where you go, I'd like you to also tell me what you're looking for the most. - Are you looking for resources? You can roll Survival to see if you can find anything useful in the wilderness. Of course, each terrain is more or less likely to yield you something. In the case of Haruka, you can instead roll Intuition to find anything edible you can use for your recipes. Erica will be able to do the same with Tech. Edu. for pokéballs if you are in a more urban environment.
- Are you looking for trouble? That requires a Perception check. People or pokémon in need of help, trainers nearby for battles, maybe someone lost something nearby... When you go looking for trouble, there's a lot of things you may find.
- Are you pokémon hunting? If you're looking for specific pokémon you know are available in the area, you can roll Pokémon Education to deduce where they would likely be. Of course, that is only appliable if you've at least seem the pokémon before to look for its info on the pokédex
Each of you can look for different things and I'll put it all together as a "result", if possible. Regardless of what you look for, pokémon are everywhere and you will encounter them. Some other things will also happen anyway because we need story, right? This is just so I know how your character is traveling and what his/her focus is at the moment. You can also split if you wish, of course.

Erica shakes her head. Does she really have to do this everyday? Oof. That is going to take some getting used to. Hopefully her next few pokemon pay a little more attention than Gapic did. She sits for a moment, trying to cool off. She takes out two blank pokeballs and puts 2 of her own Lock cases on it, hoping to use that along the way to their next day meeting. She looks up the other two. Gapic's actually paying more attention due to being worn out and focusing on training. For now, anyway.
"Ok so where we going Dean? I mean I'd rather not spend too much time on the route but... Well I've never really been able to 'use' my own cases, so I guess I'm a little excited to catch something? ...Don't tell the Prof that. Don't think the main route has too many, so maybe we go a little off-course?"
Erica shrugs.
"From what info I dug up about other people starting their journy, ya always get left off in a 'safe' area, so why not be a little dangerous to begin with?"

Envigorated by the training, Dean is in the best spirit possible. Sentinel is turning out to be quite capabale and he seemed to enjoy helping the others train as well. In Dean's eyes, this marks him as a teamplayer, which is exactly what he was hoping to see in his starter. When Erica asks him where they should be heading, he gives a little shrug. "traveling just by the routes is boring, at least that's how it was back in Hoenn. I Always feel that you experience the region best by going off the beaten path." He takes out his travelguide once more to see what different options they have. "The way I see it, we will have to spend the night outside regardless of what we do. That leaves us with 2 options: The beach is still pretty quick, and chances are we are going to encounter some water pokémon so close to the water. The other option is to take the longer way and head north through the grasslands a bit. Who knows what we'll encounter there".
He then tries to skim the book to see if he can find some info on pokémon common to the area or any interesting landmarks. "I'm fine either way ladies, as long as we get a move on. I'd like to set up camp before night falls."Don't know how you want to handle this imtobe, as it might spoil some of the fun of encountering new stuff. Just saying that dean is at this moment looking to do some battles with Iguard and maybe expand his team. He's allways on the lookout for types that compliment what he already has, so something to combat flying, ice, poison and fire would be a good target for now. I'll indeed be using my instance of exp training to train Iguard and the others. Dean's goal for traveling will be looking for trouble.

Used to a bit of physical exertion, Haruka isn't too tired out by the pokemon training, but she does note that it is a bit... involved. She didn't think it would involve so much effort on her part. At least Kasai seemed to be okay with training, though... he seemed to not treat it super seriously which Haruka was a bit worried about. Oh well... it should all work out in the end. On the discussion of which way to go Haruka shrugged, "I don't have much of a preference, to be honest, just as long as we stick together. I'd rather not get caught out in the wilderness by a group of wild... whatever when it's only me and Kasai for our first battle." Though she thought for a few moments as Dean laid out their options, "I guess if you had to make me pick, I'd say the grasslands since from what it looks like on the map, we'll be passing a decent amount of water past Etaoin Town anyway."As they go forward, Haruka keeps an eye out for any berries or other edibles she might bolster her cooking supplies with. She'd best keep them up if she was going to keep making food for all of the pokemon with her. Haruka will look for edible stuff like you laid out in your post, yeah. How are we handling rolls?

Erica gets up and dusts herself off.
"Well then I guess it's decided. Into the beginner deep wilds then. Also curious what these Unown that were mentioned are..."

At Erica's mention of Unown, the hair on Dean's neck stand on end. He had hoped to ignore this topic for now, but they were going to find out anyway down the line.
"Guys, just a quick thing before we head out. I kinda, sorta uh, have a thing with Ghost-type Pokémon. I don't feel awfully comfortable around them to be honest, they tend to creep me out a little bit. Makes me wonder though, Unown represent letters right, what if the codes the Lotus and her aid were using are just types of Unown?"
He hopes that his insight on the possibility of the Unown being linked to the message from the professor will somehow keep the girls from grilling him about his unease for ghostly things.
"She did say they were harmless though. What do you guys say we head out? Sentinel, stay close to me and keep your eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Maybe we'll find you something to spar with."
The small Iguard follows his trainer closely, peering over the edge of his shield.

At the mention of being scared of ghosts, Erica looks over at Haruka, and mentally snickers.
Ah Dean, shoulda kept quiet. With a dang Shrine Maiden on our team, something ghostly is going to happen. Save that for a rainy day.
"Could be. I've seen them used as letters for gaudy tatoos by... well the people don't matter now I suppose. But yeah, they were all trying to be really edgy with it. But you could be right."
Erica recalls Gapic, knowing that he might get a little lost on the trip, and it's better to use her cases if she sends him out with it first. She then falls in line behind Dean.

After a brief discussion about their next step, the group starts moving. They start walking down the route, but soon drift north into the taller grass. After a few minutes, Gapic starts lagging behind and Erica is forced to take him in her arms, while Sentinel and Kasai follow without difficulty, the iguard looking around attentively while crocoal mostly rushes into bushes and runs back with a happy face. The sounds of life are all around, but you fail to see pokémon as they seem quite good at hiding for now. It's almost an hour later when Haruka manages to find a small cluster of mushrooms, though, big enough to be edible. As she ducks and starts carefully collecting them, sudden cries of anguish can be heard by the group coming from somewhere nearby. Without missing a beat, Dean and Sentinel advance with the others following closely and to the source of the sounds. A few yards away, a small furry pokémon is running in circles next to some trees, crying as it tries to escape. Above the treetop, a couple of small avian pokémon are apparently trying to capture it by spitting, long trails of saliva reaching for the small mammal and back to their beaks with surprising speed. Every time the pokémon on the ground rushes in a direction, one of the birds shoots another line and forces it back. HarukaHaruka finds some edible mushrooms! They are worth 50 Cooking Scraps. Pokédex Scanning the birds (it requires a Standard Action)Pokédex Scanning the mammal (it requires a Standard Action)Actions and MapThe pokémon are currently too involved in their game to notice your approach. You have a free turn before any of them act. There's a "map" of sorts I copied from a nice game I follow on another forum. I think it's quite easy to understand and you can "move" your characters quite easily. The Route 1 tab is where you can move your tokens, while the others are just to track everything happening. You don't have to worry about it if you don't want =) Here's the link. Also, I'm taking all rolls into account. I'm just writing them in a logical manner, so wait and you'll have your results, ok?

They walk for a while, and Erica has just started getting bored already. They were supposed to go off the beaten path to find interesting things, and enjoying the sounds of nature ain't one of them. Kind of unnerving actually, being a girl so used to the cities. It's going to be nearly impossible to sleep tonight. But those thoughts are pushed aside as they find a two on one hunt of a bunny thing and two birds with streams of spit that retract? Erica shakes her head, as that idea is all kinds of bleh. Although an idea pops into her head. One she thought she was done with, but... Man one of those would snatch anything off of a table and just fly off before anyone even noticed. She wants to shake the thought off, but... Well it can't hurt to have one right? Just in case? She palms Gapic's pokeball. "Ya'll might want to cover you eyes."Without waiting for it, Erica tosses it into combat, blasting both the bunny and bird with light! Riding on her power, she then sorta runs out of steam a bit, wondering what to do next? Haruka listened to the conversation between Dean and Erica and nodded sagely, "Many not used to the occult are as such, but don't worry, you've got me after all and ghosts are my specialty." There was the rustle of cloth as a paper tag inscribed with arcane symbols suddenly appeared between Haruka's index and middle finger, a determined look on her face. "Even though there are ghosts and demons in places you would least expect them to be, I am always prepared to fend them off. Such is my duty." There was another rustle of cloth as the tag vanished from sight once again. The moment over, Haruka's face shifted into a slight frown as she thought for a few moments. "I don't think Unown are Ghost-types however. I believe they are Psychic-type. And yes, those terms were probably referring to different types of Unown since they resemble characters in writing. Though I can't say anything about why F's or V's are special."As they walked onward, Haruka gathered in the scenery with great interest, seeming enraptured by every twist and turn in the road. As a contrast to Erica, she seemed perfectly entertained by the walk through the grasslands. Kasai's running back and forth put a smile onto Haruka's face and she had to stifle giggles every time she saw how happy he was in order to make sure he wasn't offended. He was just too cute, she couldn't help it! Though she wasn't too distracted by the scenery to notice a patch of mushrooms close to the path they were taking. She knelt down to inspect them further and... a little bit of examination revealed they were edible! Haruka opened up her bag and gathered them into her cooking supplies, but as she was doing so, sudden pained cries drew her attention from them. She quickly finished her gathering before hurrying after Dean who seemed to have noticed it before her. On seeing the lapine pokemon being harrassed by... drooling birds? Haruka felt a spike of outrage. How dare those gross things bother that cutie?! Haruka pointed at the closer of the two birds and sent Kasai off to go attack them, "Use Coal Scatter on that ugly thing!"Though that wasn't the only thing she did; Haruka rummaged in her pack for something specific before letting out a shout, "Don't worry! I'll save you from those awful things!" Then, a red and white sphere flew through the air, aimed at the dusty rabbit creature. Gonna do rolls in the roll thread

When after a while of nothing interesting happening, Dean perks up as he sees the scene unfold before his eyes. Clearly the small mammal is being attacked by the duo of birds. Dean starts to turn around to discuss a strategy with his companions when he hears Erica call to cover his eyes. Not knowing exactly what to expect, the youth complies for the moment. When he sees what it is that Erica actually does, he has to fight the urge to shout at her. This is absolutely not the way he thinks is acceptable to battle wild Pokémon. Attacking freely and without warning is not great battling etiquette and Dean makes a mental note to address the issue after the battle. The harm was already done now, so it was best to just join in on the fun. He then gets his pokédex to scan the bird Pokémon. Before reading the results he addresses his Iguard. "Get ready buddy, we're going to get involved as well. I want you to keep your distance but hit one of those birds with your Megadrain. Keep your shield up though as we're facing multiple opponents".
Dean uses his standard action to scan the bird Pokémon with his dex. He then moves up a little to get a better view of the situation. He'll be moving to H7. Sentinel moves up to G7 and then Uses Megadrain on the bird on G4. bayO6kUm1d20 If that hits, the damage will be (not including resistance) 2d6+11 Since Sentinel is currently at full health, it won't have a secondary effect. I believe the shield adds 2 to Sentinel's evasion, but correct me if I misread it. 1d20·2d6+11

Gapic's pokéball explodes in a burst of light, releasing the swimole amidst combat. The light seems to have affected the mammal, but the birds seem unaffected by it, although they are still too surprised to move, the trail of saliva hanging from the open beak of the farthest one. Erica orders a bubble attack, but the water pokémon seem almost as surprised as the enemies. Kasai immediately rushes at his trainer's orders, opening his mouth to release a blast of ash and embers at the closest bird, just as Haruka throws the modified pokéball at the blinded pokémon on the ground to save it. It hits its fury back, and the pokémon is instantly sucked inside the pokéball in a red glow. The ball falls to the ground and shakes once, very gently, before pinging loudly. Dean and Sentinel are much more controlled, the experience of the trainer giving an air of confidence to the iguard. With clear instructions, Sentinel advances holding his shield up, before his eyes glow green and globs of energy travel into his mouth coming from the avian pokémon ahead, its life energy slowly sucked out. It shakes its head, breaking the attack that doesn't seem to have affected it much. Meanwhile, Dean uses the distraction to read about them in the pokédex. They're called Dribbino, and seem to be the basic Normal + Flying combination so many bird pokémon have. Finally, as if leaving a trance, the swimole's mouth starts foaming and a blast of bubbles fly around, popping loudly as it collides with the floor, the tree and, most importantly, the dribbino. The attack knocks it out of the branch and it falls motionless on the ground, unconscious. Its companion on the other tree suddenly goes very still slowly ducking behind foliage to try and hide itself. HarukaYou captured a Dustley! Haruka watched the ball absorb the critter and begin shaking. She waited with a held breath as the ball shook once... then settled! Haruka let out a small cry of Victory, face beaming. The cute thing was saved! Then she watched with some satisfaction as Kasai and Gapic's attacks downed one of the birds. "Great job, Kasai!" she called out as the bird fell to the ground. She'd ruffle him behind the ears later. She noticed the other one try to hide behind some foliage, but it wasn't all that effective considering there wasn't much space for it to hide. Haruka took the chance to shout at it, "And let that be a lesson to you! Don't torture cute things like that!"
She let out a short breath before dusting off her hands and making to head over and pick up the pokeball with her new friend in it. "Well, that seems to have been taken care of. Unless either of you want to catch that rude... thing," she said, putting as much scorn into the last word as she could.

With Haruka's capture of the lupine pokémon and the defeat of one of the birds, the battle seemed over. Especially with the remaining battler shying away now that it was facing three opponents. Dean moved up to Haruka to congratulate her on her very first capture. Before doing so though, he made sure that Sentinel got some praise as well, even though his attack had did little damage to their opponent. He pats his iguard softly on top of his head and smiles broadly. "That was pretty good for a first outing sentinel. There will be plenty more pokémon to test ourselves against".
"Congratulations Haruka, that was a great throw. It was a good idea to get it out of that prickly situation."
Dean then checks the tree again, to see if the Dribbino is still there. If not he tries to get Erica's attention. "That was pretty reckless if I'm being honest. You didn't know what we were facing exactly, it might have been way too much for us to handle. Not only that butPersonally I don't think it's okay to just ambush some pokémon and attack them without any warning".
Dean hoped he didn't come across too harsh, so he ended with a sincere smile. "Let's just say that this wasn't too bad of a first battle. Gapic packs quite a punch"

As Erica attacks, she sees Haruka sneak in a strike ahead of her and get the little dust bunny out of the way. Well there's that at least. But other than that HOLY CRAP GAPIC IS THE BEST. Erica blinks in surprise. "Oh sure, now's he's paying attention. Hot damn I think I got the best one. Bubbles... who knew."But unfortunately that comes with the bird she wanted fainting. Oops. As the other one gets a bit damaged from Dean's pokemon, it seems to retreat. And the battle seems to be a bit over now, and Dean walks over and sorta chastises her. Erica just laughs and shakes her head. "Ok, so maybe I didn't know that Gapic would just nuke them both. I was hoping to just split up the two sides but ummm. Yeah. Didn't expect that. As for recklessness, please. Would the professor really leave us here by ourselves if there was something we couldn't handle? Further in-land sure, but here? And everything turned out alright, so if you'll excuse me, I got a weird bird to catch."Erica decides to just let her Lock Case do the work. Let's not blow up her second chance. The dribbino tries leaping outside of the ball's range, but its little wings are not capable of completely avoiding the device. The pokéball clips its wings and the bird is sucked inside in a flash of light. The lock case clamps hard, and the pokéball falls to the ground, shaking violently for a while before it pings. It seems Erica also has a new partner. Sentinel stands stoically looking around after his trainer's compliment, while Kasai sniffs the dribbino passed out on the floor. Gapic just stands there, bubbles still popping around him with much less force than before. It seems this first battle has been easily won, but there's still a long way to Etaoin. Already happy from her catch, Dean's complement made her smile grow slightly wider, "Why, thank you! I just figured it was the quickest way to get it away from those awful drool monsters. I didn't know if I was going to hit with that, my success with throwing things is a little... mixed. So I'm glad my first real pokeball throw was a good one."
Haruka regarded the ball, thinking of its occupant. Hmm... what kind of name to give it? Oh! The pokedex might give her some inspiration, maybe she should look at the description of the species in it. After a slightly longer than typical fiddling with the device, Haruka managed to get some sort of... readout screen. She read through it, "Hmm... Dustley is the species name and this one is a girl... You are very fluffy so... I think I'll call you Wata! I'll have to see if you like it when I send you out next time."
Though she was distracted, she managed to catch the tail end of Dean confronting Erica about 'ambushing' the pokemon. Haruka's face turned dark as her cheeks puffed up some. "Poor Wata was being played with by those awful things! Would you waste time telling a person beating up someone weaker than them about your presence, possibly letting them do something worse to the victim? No! Even the Swords of Justice will forgo honor in order to protect an innocent. Are you so attached to it that you'd let others come to harm?" she let loose in a furious tirade. Though she calmed down some and continued more reasonably, "Besides, I don't believe Professor Lotus would let us loose without any sort of warning if there were things in the area that were that dangerous as Erica said."
She spun around in time to see Erica successfully catch the other bird, which Haruka looked a bit displeased about. They were technically supposed to document all the species in the pokedex but... those things were gross! And that specific one was mean to Wata! Haruka gave her a bit of a dark look before noticing Kasai sniffing at the unmoving form of the other bird. She jumped and rushed over, attempting to shoo him away, "Kasai, you don't know where this thing's been! Leave it alone, you don't want to get drool all over you..." Despite her commands, Kasai seemed reluctant to leave it alone.
Haruka let out a sigh before turning back to the other two. "Should we keep going then? We still have quite a ways to go, I'd rather be most of the way there before the sun goes down." Maybe the threat of leaving without him would make Kasai leave the gross thing alone.

As the ball falls and locks in place, Erica smirks as her first capture is successful.
"I can get used to this."
She walks over and picks up the ball, removing the Lock case, putting it on another blank one in her bag. She begins thinking of a name already, and thinks about releasing it till she catches Haruka's speech and then her glare after. Maybe later then! She walks over to the other girl, and puts a hand on her shoulder.
"No need to yell at the man. Maybe he'd rather play fair in his fights. I mean if he got to the league then I'm sure it works for him. Maybe not for you and me... but that's different."
Now it's time to see about what she caugh- EW WHAT. Erica makes a small gagging face as she looks at her pokedex info on her capture.
"Whooooo in the world would eat the saliva? That's just-"
Erica shudders.

Not expecting the tirade coming from Haruka, Dean was a bit taken aback. " You are probably right that the professor would not let us roam freely here if there was any extreme danger to expect, doesn't mean that we don't need to be careful though. I don't know if I agree with the rest you're saying but I guess to each his own. I didn't mean to anger anyone." "What do you girls say we move on, with both of you capturing a Pokémon already you're making me look like the amateur. Come on Sentinel, it's hunting time".Dean sprints ahead just a little bit, beckoning Iguard to follow along. His green friend is pretty quick on its feet, easily keeping up with his trainer. "Let's see if we can find something more interesting to fight, shall we?"Sentinel nods and twists his shield in his hand. He looked ready to go and Dean could only hope he would find a suitable challenge for his new companion. Rolls for looking for Pokémon will be done in the roll thread.
