Once Floyd arrives in Fuchsia city he heads to the Pokemon Centre to heal before going to the gym.

Arriving at the Gym in Fuschia, Floyd is somewhat relieved to discover that it is a somewhat more regular Gym. No gimmicks like Celadon, no absurd entry requirements, just a normal building with normal trainers in it. Well, if you don't count the fact that all the trainers are carrying heavy winter clothing and survival gear with them. When you inquire about this, one of the trainers helpfully informs you that the part of the Gym Challenge is reaching the Leader, much like Pewter Gym. The main difference is that there is a real chance of serious injury (though obviously not death) on this Challenge, simply because you're scaling a mountain.

Floyd confidently responds that he's climbed a mountain before and is prepared to do so again.

The guy laughs a bit.
"Climbed Mt. Moon, right? Any trainer worth their salt has done that at least once. Mt. Moon is a cake walk compared to this place. Especially if you happen to go there during the Summer. It's rumored that the Legendary Bird, Articuno occasionally roosts there on its way to Seafoam. Ever encountered a Legend before? Not many have." He pauses a moment, then realizes he probably sounds like a prick.
"Sorry about that, pal. Name's Brandon." He extends his hand in greeting.

"Floyd."
Floyd says, shaking Brandon's hand.
"And yes I climbed Mt Moon. Since I grew up in the Survival Zone this sort of challenge doesn't really phase me."
'Unless it involves not getting lost.' He mentally notes.

"Grew up there? Dang. What kinda crazy childhood did you have? In any case, that ought to make the Gym's survival challenge a bit easier for you. Though as you probably guessed: it's not just about making it to the top. Nah, you also got to fight off your rival Trainers, Gym Trainers, and even ambushes from the Leader's Pokemon along the way. Or so I've heard. First time attempting it myself." Brandon looks around at the competition. There are perhaps a dozen or so trainers in the room, counting the two of you.
"Still, I'm confident that my Pokemon and I can handle Ice Types, despite their weakness to it."

"That's what I thought about Celadon."
Floyd says with a sour expression.
"I'd better go change into something warm. Plate isn't what you want to wear in anything other than ideal temperatures."
Floyd nods farewell to Brandon and prepares for the ordeal.

Not long after purchasing and changing into your warmer clothing, someone claiming to be associated with the Gym approaches the waiting group. He says that if you are all ready, he will now take you to the mountain. Once everyone assures that they are fully prepared for the ordeal, he leads you all out of the old Gym building and towards the city limits. The entire time he has been ever so slightly increasing the walking pace, until you are all moving at a slow jog. The mountain looms closer with every mile you walk/jog, and at some point the group actually loses sight of their 'guide'. One second he was there, and the next he wasn't. Everyone slows to a stop in confusion before one person (you can't see who) points out that there is a note on the ground. Another person goes over and picks it up, reading it aloud.
"Your challenge began the moment you entered the Gym. Your battlefield is the entire mountain. Your final goal to reach the summit, at a height of 2,595 meters. If you get lost, or choose to discontinue your challenge, send up a red flare from the survival packs you likely purchased back in town, and one of my trainers will come to escort you back to safety. Good luck!"

Once the note is read aloud Floyd nods to himself and makes sure his sword and shield are easily accessible. He then immedieately sets out, following the steepest route up the mountain.

It doesn't take long for the walk to turn into a treacherous climb. You can trust in your skills gained from growing up in the Survival Zone and try to pick your way up, or you can turn back to try and find an alternative route.
(If you continue on, make an Athletics check. DC is 15 to start. After 20 meters, it becomes a sheer cliff, and the DC doubles.)

Looking at the cliff, Floyd shakes his head and walks away, looking for an easier path.

It takes some time, but you do manage to find your way up onto the mountain proper (previously you were just at its base). There is a fair amount of snow on the ground, but not enough to hinder movement yet. Picking your way up the path, you eventually reach a point where you must choose to continue along a winding path with deep snow (movement reduced by half) or try to climb up an icy slope. Sitting on a rock at the forked path is what appears to be some old hermit guy. He doesn't seem dressed for the weather, and does nothing more than give you a slight wave of acknowledgement. If asked, he says he is "people watching".

Floyd gives the old man a confused glance before deciding he must be here for rescue attempts if necessary. He then ventures through the snow, relying on his new boots to carry him swiftly across.

Floyd's new boots definitely ease the journey across the deep snow drifts. The hermit guy watches him go, then returns to his 'people watching'. As one might expect, it begins to get colder the higher you go. The wind picks up a bit, occasionally blowing powdery snow into your face as it swirls about, but nothing dangerous yet. After some time you reach a high point where there is a bit of a wind break. Sitting down to catch your breath (trudging through snow is hard work by itself, going uphill at the same time is even harder), you take in your surroundings, trying to decide which way to go next. You look in all directions and see nothing but snow and rocks. When you look back again, there is someone standing there. You didn't even hear them approach, though their white/grey garb suggests that they were deliberately blending in with the surroundings. This must be one of the Gym Trainers, as Fuschia was known to be home to a clan of Ninjas.
"Greetings, Challenger. I trust your journey has been appropriately difficult thus far?"

Floyd nods to the ninja.
"The climb has been fairly relaxing thus far actually." He says, fingers tapping on one of his pokeballs on his belt.

"Hm. I suppose you must simply have more experience than some of the others. From what I've heard, a lot of them are struggling with the climbing portions, and it only gets harder from here. Best we get started then, eh? How about 2 on 2, full-contact?"

"Assuming you have ninja doctors standing by, yes. I don't want to turn around and carry you back down." Floyd says confidently, releasing Muril and Cauda and drawing his sword and shield.
"Fire Spin on the shellfish Cauda." He orders. Cauda darts forwards and attacks. AC 4 vs dvbgXHtB1d20+1 Damage: 2d6+31 Crit Damage: 2d6+8 Target is trapped in a vortex1d20+1·2d6+31·2d6+8

"You seem certain that you'll win... Cloyster, Spike Cannon on Vulpix."
The ninja turns towards the Meowstic and moves their hands rapidly in strange motions. The ground between you becomes slick, then rapidly freezes into a thin sheet of ice. Cloyster ducks inside its protective shell to avoid some of the heat from the flames, then fires several spiky projectiles at Vulpix.
Standard Action: Frozen Domain Effect: Set 6 square meters of Frozen Domain within range 6. All 6 meters must be adjacent with at least one other space of Frozen Domain. All legal targets passing through these squares must make an Acrobatics check with a DC equal to 4 + twice your Survival Rank. On failure, the target is Tripped. Pokémon who are flying, levitating, or have the Naturewalk (Tundra) Capability are immune to this effect. When standing on a square affected by Frozen Domain, you may act as if you were in Hail weather. When a Fire-Type attack originates from or targets a square of Frozen Domain, that square of Frozen Domain melts and is cleared. Frozen Domain is considered a Hazard.
