"Ice cream? Thanks Hau!" Elise thanked her cousin.
"Sounds like a good idea. Care to tell us some more about the challenge?" Elise inquired. During the earlier battle she thought it might be a good idea to do the island challenge. Battling was fun and who knew towards where it would lead?

Seeing Elise's interest, Hau leads you back to the ice cream stand while elaborating on the Island Challenge. Before battling an island's Kahuna, trainers must first undergo an Island Trial. These trials are done one or two at a time, and usually involve solving some problem on the Island (nothing major, like attacking a criminal team's HQ, though.) Afterwards, if the problem is solved to the Kahuna's expectations, you get to battle the Kahuna in a fight known as a Grand Trial. In the old days, once the Kahunas of all four islands were defeated, you'd travel to the top of Mount Lanakila to battle all of the Kahunas one final time to complete the trial. However, since a Pokemon League was recently established, after fighting the Kahunas you battle the twin champions to be named champion of the Alola League. "And if you're planning to take the Challenge," Hau says, "I recommend paying a visit to Professor Kukui. I'm sure he'll be more than willing to help and advise you."

Kane takes a minute to process everything he's just been told, and begins to adapt his cool hero persona, which doesn't work as well with blue ice cream all over his face.
"An ominous book? A call to adventure? This is almost too perfect. This is CLEARLY a sign from the heavens that I! KANE! HERO OF ALL! HAVE BEEN CALLED UPON TO THWART THE DEMONS THAT CLAIM THIS LAND!! TAKE ME TO THIS KAKUI YOUNG MAN! I HAVE A WORLD TO SAVE!!!
At this point Kane is standing on the chair and pointing at Hau. Passionate would be too tame of a word to describe Kane

Ira sighs, shaking his head but unable to keep a microscopic hint of a smile on his face at his brother's theatrics.
"Well, he's got a point. If it makes it easier to figure out what's really going on and take it down, this challenge is probably a good idea. Plus it'd beat scouring the same beach every day for shards." He takes a couple of lick of his vanilla ice cream before muttering "Assuming I can ever get a rod for it."

Hau claps Ira on the shoulder. "Don't worry, I'm sure Kukui could hook you up! C'mon, I'll take you to him!" Following Hau down the beach, you come to a sprawling, single-story house built right where the sand meets the grass. On the beach, you see a young man in his late twenties standing ankle-deep in the ocean. The man wears a long labcoat, croc shoes, swim shorts, glasses, and a baseball hat. In the water in front of him is a large, green, plantlike Pokemon that seems to be capering about as fast as it can- that is to say, not very. When they become aware of you, the man waves cheerfully while the Pokemon rocks its head back and forth in an imitation of the man's action.

Kane looks back and forth before realizing the man is waving at them. He give little time for introductions and runs straight to the man
"Greeting mighty warrior! My kindly steed here has informed us that you may help us on completing the harrowing island challenges. I request assistance!!!"

The man isn't phased by Kane's manner of speaking. He's either the coolest customer you've ever met, or he's seen stranger things than this. Perhaps it's both. "Well, I'm more than happy to answer your questions about the Island Challenge. And your name is...?"

Ira steps forward, looking over the professor intently. After a moment, he nods.
"Ira. Kane. Elise." He says, pointing to each in turn. "Got some interest in... seeing the islands. Figured the challenge'd be a good way to do it."

The Professor smiles warmly and nods. "Of course. I'll get you set up for that. You'll need a few things, though. A Pokedex, a way to hold the stamps that prove you completed portions of the challenge, and of course, more Pokemon." Leaving the big green Pokemon to play in the surf, he beckons you to follow him to the nearby house.

"Well... more friends can't ever hurt!" Elise said cheerfully when the older man said more pokémon. She followed him inside after waving the pokémon goodbye.

Ira nods, following the others. "Yeah, though let's not get careless - a good friend is hard to find."

"Just use the internet Ira. The internet is FULL of nice people. But professor, where can we find more pokemon? I saw some at the beach, but I already have a really cool water type. Is there somewhere else we can go?"

Kukui takes you into the house. It's actually quite a nice place; about half of the ground floor is devoted to living space, while the other half is a laboratory. Kukui listens to your concerns and nods, going through drawers. "More Pokemon? Pokemon are everywhere here in Alola. Hau'oli City, the beach, the oceans, the roads and wilderness between towns- you need only look. But first..." He pulls out handfuls of Pokeballs, placing them on a table. "For all of you. Five each," he says with a friendly smile. "You'll need these to catch the Pokemon you want." He goes back to the drawer. "Now, since Hau may not always be with you, you'll need something to tell you about the Pokemon in the region... something like this!" He pulls out a bizarre-looking tablet, plugs it into a computer, and uses it to access a strange-looking website. That being done, he sits down in a chair, arms folded with an enigmatic smile on his face. You each gain 5 Basic Balls.

Kane starts poking and prodding the device trying to get it to do something
"What is this? A game console?"

"Not quite," Kukui says, still grinning that enigmatic grin as an electric hum begins to fill the air, the lights flickering off and on as the computers begin making bizarre noises.

Ira's eyes widen as all the electronics go crazy.
Growling a little, he steps in front of his siblings and assumes an aggressive stance, ready to block anything that comes at them.

With a flash, a grinning orb of glowing light pops out of the computer. Three lightning-shaped appendages protrude from it as it zips around the room almost faster than you can follow. It pauses in front of each of your faces, and in its maniacal grin you detect no hostility- only a thrill and zest for life. It turns towards the weird tablet and dives inside; as it does, the electronics in the room return to normal. A strong smell of ozone permeates the air. "Whew!" Kukui says, standing up and beginning to put things back in order. "Looks like we got a strong one this time!"

"Woa Woah!" Elise lets out as the devices in the room started to make weird noises and the light started to flip on an out.
"Is that a pokémon?" Elise asked as the ghost zapped around the room.

Kukui smiles at the young girl. "Yes, it's called Rotom. It's a ghost/electric Pokemon that can inhabit electronic and mechanical devices to change its type and abilities in battle." He unplugs the odd tablet and holds it up for you to see. "Because of that, we've built a special Pokedex that can contain Rotom and give it the ability to speak. See?" As you watch, eyes appear on the Pokedex. The screen flickers a moment, and then the insane grin of the Rotom you saw appears on it. Little arms pop from its sides, and a spike grows from the top. It looks around for a moment, and then looks at you all. "Hello!" it says cheerfully, waving one of its little arms in a gesture of greeting.

Ira narrows his eyes, not relaxing his stance as he sees the grin on the new dex.
"Hello." He says cagily. "You're, er... You're on our side?"
