Clay's still cheering that first vicious bite when the cat jumps at Red Child. The Growlithe is hurting now, but definitely not out yet. "Hang in there, Red Child! Hit 'im with Ember!"
Red Child twists around to throw the cat off, letting out an angry bark - one that comes with a shower of burning sparks.

The feline gets torched and is quickly recalled. Next the boy sends out a small, purple creature with a nasty-looking horn. It charges forward to take down Red Child.

"Yeah, he's down! Good going!" But though Red Child took down the cat successfully, its attacks still took their toll. The kick only really catches him a glancing blow, it's enough to send him to the floor. Now Clay sends out Flower, and the little candle floats serenely just above the ground, regarding the spiny purple creature almost curiously. Conscious of how fragile Flower's physical defenses are, Clay calls out, "Try to avoid its attacks!" Flower trills and spins around before contracting down even smaller, zipping this way and that. Even presenting a smaller target, Flower can't quite avoid the attack. She floats backwards, shrilling angrily. "Stay on your... toes, I guess. You don't really have toes. Oh, well. Show him your flame spiral technique!"
Flower starts to spin in midair, her flame growing longer and whipping up into a vortex of fire. The Fire Spin attack whirls at the Nidoran, trying to trap it in the whirl of flame.

The horn deflects off of a hardened patch of wax in Flower's soft body, doing little harm. Clay's a little glad of that, because he doesn't like the look of it - thinks it might be poisonous. "Great job so far! Let's give it some more heat!"
Flower's flame whips out again, searing the Nidoran once more even as the vortex still whips around it.

"Aw, come on!" Clay half-screeches as Flower goes down. She almost had it this time! "What is that dark stuff and why does it poke holes in spirits?" The question is mostly rhetorical, he's not sure he expects an answer.
He sighs and digs out a couple more coins. "Sorry, don't have a lot. I almost had you there, though."

The Ace-in-training merely shrugs, accepts his payment and walks off after recalling his Nidoran.
Clay gains 12 Poke XP.

Clay encounters a random girl about his age. She accepts the battle challenge for 2v2. Her first Pokemon looks kinda like that purple thing that one boy had, but it's blue and has a smaller horn.

Clay makes a face. He remembers the thing that looked kind of like this. Okay, step one, not sending Flower out this time.
Instead, he sends out Red Child, and the Growlithe bares his fangs at his opponent. "Okay, show her your teeth! Bite!" Red Child leaps forward, snapping at the blue Pokémon.

The rabbit dodges again. Red Child is broadcasting too much to get a hit in, which it takes advantage of. It gets inside his guard and scratches him up again.

That's enough to send Red Child falling down... and Clay's face falling, too. He recalls the poor Growlithe and replaces him with Sandy. "C'mon, Sandy, almost got her! Use your Water Gun!"
Sandy lets loose a bubbling trill and spits a blast of water at the nimble rabbit.
