"Ooh, you look like a tough one." Clay grins and taps Red Child's ball, making it grow to release the Growlithe. "Okay, get in there! Show it what we've got!"
Red Child lets out a short bark and lunges at the bearlike Pokémon with teeth bared, snapping at it fiercely.

The little bear easily throws Red Child off itself when he clamps down. It responds by pushing forward rapidly with open-palm strikes.

Those hammering strikes hit Red Child hard, and he shrinks back with a whining noise. Clay winces sympathetically. "Okay, light him up, then back off!"
Red Child spits burning embers at the bear, hoping they'll have more effect than his teeth did, then backs away warily - and Clay uses the opening to toss a Poké Ball at the bear to try and capture it.

"All right!" Great job, Red Child! Now let's meet our new friend...
Clay scoops up the ball and calls out the little bear, smiling broadly. The bear, for his part, seems to making a studied effort not to look impressed. In a series of quiet growls that sound rather like Red Child's, Clay says, Those are some serious moves you've got there, little guy. I think we're gonna get along well. I'll call you... "Baloo. The sound kinda fits you, I think."
The newly-christened Baloo nibbles his leaf and pretends to look uninterested... until Clay waves some of the food Rei made under his nose. Tasty food certainly gets his attention. He devours it greedily and looks much better disposed toward Clay after that, especially when Clay pulls out a Potion to soothe some of the battle damage, too. Now whaddaya say we go find a fight to put your skills to the test?
Clay heads off back towards the city in search of a trainer to fight.

Clay finds some kid poking around in the bushes just outside of town. Just as clay goes over to say 'hi', the boy shouts "Got it!" and pops out holding an apricorn ball. A small, white-haired bug appears at his feet from within the bush.
"Huh? Who're you? You wanna fight? I bet my Flame Bug could beat one of your Pokemon!"

"Flame bug, huh? All right, let's see what he's got!" Clay's teeth show as he sends out Baloo - and while he bows, the little bear stomps the ground like a wrestler.
"Name's Clay, and this is Baloo. One-on-one sounds good to me, so... Baloo, let's see what you can do! Hit him hard and fast!"
Baloo charges at the bug with a surprising turn of speed and more or less body-slams the bug - as devastating as that Arm Thrust technique was, Clay knows it's less useful on bugs. "Paaaan-cham!"

Baloo the Pancham rushes forward and slams into the flame bug, which summarily lives up to its namesake. The little bug flares up and burns Baloo's hand. (Flame Body - Pancham is now burned)
"Get 'em, Larvesta! More fire is always good!"
The Larvesta sends a small burst of flame at Baloo.

Baloo makes a pained noise as the heat from the Larvesta's body burns him, but dodges away from the flames with surprising agility for a Pokémon with such stubby legs. "Nice one, buddy! Hit him again, let's keep this pace up!"
Baloo growls defiantly and charges once more, tackling the bug again.

This time Baloo doesn't manage to dodge, and the jet of fire leaves patches of fur smoldering. Clay grimaces. "Come on, we're not down yet! This is where you show me what you're made of!"
Baloo shifts his little leaf to the corner of his mouth, gritting his teeth, then charges the Larvesta one last time, fully aware that this is his last chance.

That powerful flare is too much for Baloo - he topples backward with a cry, and Clay recalls him quickly. "Pff, this is just not my week. Good battle, though! That bug's pretty tough, I wasn't expecting that at all."
Though the loss is not good news for Clay's lack of funds. "So, uh, what do I owe you? One tenth, right?"

Clay takes a deep breath as he walks away from the kid, who's now 13 crowns richer. Okay. Let's try one more time before head to the healers'. Hope I don't get cleaned out so I can't afford it...
Still, Flower hasn't had a chance at a fight yet, maybe he can find someone she can show her stuff against. Which is to say someone without nasty pointy teeth.

Clay, similar to Tiki not an hour or two ago, nearly runs into some girl in a fancy dress. Master Nob always taught him to at least try to be polite, and apologize for running into people (even if it was totally their fault), but even as he opens his mouth, the girl's face twists in anger.
"Ugh! So many damn, dirty commoners around here. I don't know why Father wanted me to come here, there's nothing of note that we can't find in Celadon. Get out of the way, you filthy street rat, or I'll call the guards on you!"

"Hey!" Clay looks offended. "Well, I was gonna apologize, but if you're gonna call me names you could at least not get them all wrong. I'm not a street rat, I'm not a dam, there's nothing common about me, and I'm not even that dirty." Maybe a little sweaty - that last battle was a real nail-biter - but mostly it's just ordinary traveling dust.
He taps a finger against Flower's ball. "Right, I challenge you to a battle! If I win you have to apologize!"

The girl laughs.
"Oh my... this commoner is so stupid he barely even understands when he's being insulted! That's hilarious!"
Her expression suddenly darkens again when Clay challenges her with the intent to force her to apologize. The slightly older guy behind her looks nervous all of a sudden.
"I will destroy you, you filthy creature."
She pulls out a much fancier version of an apricorn ball and calmly presses the button to release... a small yellow-orange fox.

Clay didn't even notice the older guy, too distracted by insulting fancy girl there. Flower appears from her ball, hovering a little way above the ground, with a little trill as her blue flame dances.
Flower's init: 6
She twirls elegantly as the fox's flames race toward her, and the fiery attack is drawn up into the blue flame, which burns just that little bit brighter. Clay grins. "You should pay attention to what you're facing! Or at least let it introduce itself..." Clay bows, and Flower mimics the motion as much as she can, her stubby body bending slightly. "I'm Clay of the Fire Branch, and Flower and I will see who winds up in ashes! Flower, Confuse Ray!"
An eerie, wavering ball of light emerges from Flower's one visible eye, spiraling lazily toward "Fennekin".
