As the sun lizard goes down, the expected Mankey arrives on the field. It screeches loudly, pounding its chest. Its eyes seem to turn a deep red (more so than usual) as it chops at the sand lizard.

Mufomono just barely goes down, thrashing all the way, and Clay grits his teeth. So, he's only taken out two of her Pokémon, and is down to two of his own. This really doesn't look good. "Come on, Red Child! Take her down!"
Red Child appears, hackles raised. Hastily, Clay barks out, "It's a Mankey! Don't try to intimidate it, they're too dumb to be afraid, they just get madder! Just bite the stupid thing!" Obediently, Red Child charges the monkey, fire flaring around his teeth as he snaps at it.

The Mankey didn't like that. It screeches again and sweeps at Red Child's legs.

Red Child doesn't like that at all. He twists around, using the impact of the kick to put him into position to lash out at the Mankey with his front paws. "Yeah! Show it who's boss!"

Mankey is flattened by the Reversal, and Brenda sends out a new Pokemon. One Clay has never seen before. It's a quadruped Pokémon with a dark blue to black body covered in white fur. It has a ruff around its neck and chest and a tuft on the top of its head adorned with a single blue-black oval. It has a feline face with almond-shaped, red eyes, a scythe-like tail, and a crescent shaped horn on the side of its head. Its broad feet are equipped with three claws each, and spikes protrude from the heels of its hind legs and the elbows of its front legs.
It growls softly before leaping up and slashing at Red Child with its claws.

Once again, the attack is just barely too much for Red Child, who roars in defiance before finally going down. Clay mutters something uncomplimentary under his breath. "Okay, it's all up to you, Sandy! Hit it fast and hit it hard!"
He releases the Marshtomp fairly far away from his opponent and croaks out, "Use the mud! It can't hit what it can't see!" Sandy ribbits in understanding and creates a weighty glob of mud that he launches directly at the other Pokémon's face before backing away even farther.

Sandy is definitely wobbling on his feet now, but he's still standing. In a last-ditch effort he sprays a gout of high-pressure water at his opponent.

This time Sandy manages to draw back out of reach of the Absol's teeth and sprays it with water again, on the theory that if it's trying to avoid it it must be scared of it.

The little rocky... thing's fangs are too much for Sandy. He finally goes down, and Clay recalls him with a sigh.
"Okay, you win. Gotta remember not to play it so cautious next time. And to bring Sis and Baloo. You caught me without any of my Fighting-types even around." He shakes his head. "What even were those last two? Was the little green one a dragon or something?"

Clay finds a strange man grumbling to himself as he paces about on the outskirts of Saffron and Route 2 (North to Cerulean). He seems slightly agitated about something, and is clutching that fishing pole as if its a lifeline.

Clay regards the stranger curiously, especially the thing in his hand. He's vaguely aware of fishing poles, but never realized how funny they look close-up before.
Might as well try to be nice! "Hey there. What's eating you?" "Nice" not being the same as "formal" by any stretch of the imagination.

"Grah!" He shouts suddenly. "It's these damnable Luck Gods. They've been tormenting me all the past month! Not a single fish caught nor battle won! I make enough through other means to keep the family fed, sure, but it's still irritating beyond belief!" He continues to rant about these 'Luck Gods' and his 'interactions' with them for the next five minutes, whether Clay sticks around to listen or not. If Clay is still there after his rant, he suddenly turns to him. "Maybe...should I risk it? Y'know what? I will. I'LL SHOW YOU, DAMNABLE LUCK GODS!" He points his pole at you. "You there, Boy! Fight my amazing Pokemon team! I'll go anywhere from three to six combatants!"

"Luck gods? Wha...?" Clay hangs around more because he's stunned than because he's actually listening. He's not entirely sure what Luck Gods are, beyond what the name indicates (and to be honest he's still kind of shaky on what gods of any sort actually do).
He's always up for a challenge, though. "Okay, sure! Let's stick with three, make it a little quicker." And also avoid him being stuck with the half of his team that's weak against Water-types facing this fishing guy who he guesses probably has fish on his team.
He pulls a Pokéball out and to send out Tavi. "Dinnertime, Tavi! Uh, not literally. Don't actually eat his Pokémon." The Dewott bows to the fisherman, then draws his scalchops and settles into a fighting stance.
Tavi's Init: 18

That... is new. That is very new. "What in the... why can your Magikarp breathe fire?"
Clay sighs and chatters out a brief order to Tavi. "Try and get under his guard and slice 'em up!" "Aye, sir!" Tavi rolls under the flames, hissing slightly as they scorch his fur, then slashes with a scalchop at the Magikarp's scales.
