The worn-out turtle finally falls, replaced by a beautiful golden-white furred fox. It stares Fan down, sending an orb of ghostly light spinning around her head.

Fan staggers dizzily, and Clay finds himself wobbling a little in sympathy. But now that the ridiculously tough turtle is down, they can't give up even if things look bleak. Clay chatters at her excitedly. "C'mon, sis, the worst is over now! Hit it with a Double Kick!" (Unfortunately, through their link it's hard to conceal his acknowledgement that "the worst is over" may be an exaggeration, but he has a hard time believing that even Blaze and Smoke can make themselves as difficult to take down as that Torkoal.)
Fan launches herself into a flying kick, lashing out with both feet at the fox!

Ninetales' eyes flash with rage as Fan kicks it twice as hard as she can. Fan suddenly forgets how to use Double Kick! (Cursed Body Ability) Next, the fox's eyes begin to glow an eerie mixture of purple and red, sending multiple rings of dark blue energy at Fan.

Unfortunately Fan's lightning speed is so fast that she bounces off of Ninetales and strikes the mat a little too hard. She falls to the ground and is replaced with the revived Sandy. "All up to you, buddy! Let's show her what we can do!" The blue "third eye" glow starts up again as Clay focuses himself on feeding Sandy's power back into itself, and Sandy lets loose at the Ninetales with a spray of mud.

Ninetales definitely didn't appreciate the mud splattered on its fur. It tries to disorient Sandy.

When Sandy goes down again, his wounds still glowing with the fading energy of Smoke's attack, Clay sees red. He bares his teeth and howls out something that Ashley probably doesn't need to understand Infernape language to know is a challenge. He vaults over Smoke's low-slung body, tumbling away from the expected retaliation, and strikes out at Ashley with his staff, hoping to at least bring her down with him.

At this point Clay could probably have been knocked over with a light slap, to be honest. It was amazing he was still as nimble as he was. So unsurprisingly, Ashley's punch lays him out.

Clay finds something surprising on the road. It's a Zangoose! However, its markings are ever-so-slightly different than the small fesnyng of Zangoose you met a few weeks ago. It's ears go back and its fur bristles as it prepares for a fight!

"Oh, hey there! About the - oh, wait, I don't recognize you. Must be a different troop, or whatever Zangoose have. Oops."
And this guy's looking pretty aggressive, too. "Okay, Ryuma, show me what you got!" The Ponyta paws the ground as she's released, snorting at the white predator. Clay takes a deep breath and concentrates, gathering a glowing red aura around Ryuma's front hooves. On Clay's command, she charges, rearing up to bring a hoof down heavily on the Zangoose.

Ow, that one sure looked like it hurt. Sadly Ryuma is not the sturdiest of Pokémon. "We gotta work on your endurance, buddy," Clay grumbles. "Now for something you are good at though - light him up!"

"Whoops." Clay had been planning to try and catch the Zangoose. Either he overestimated how sturdy it was or underestimated how much pain Ryuma could dish out. "Remind me to bring you along next time I have a tough nut to crack, huh?"
Welp, time to keep looking!

Clay spots a red monkey in a tree! It whoops at him and throws a random berry as a joke.

Clay catches the berry and raises his eyebrows, looking up at the monkey. That's a new one. His Poké Tome would probably tell him what it is - more or less, considering his level of literacy - but he decides on the direct approach instead. He doesn't need to know the name of the thing to chat with it. "Hey there. Is it fruit-throwing season already?"
He gives it a careful smile - a proper friendly one, his teeth hidden. "What're you up to up there?"
