The little guy seems to understand that Snivy is his opponent and rushes in for the attack! It doesn't respond to your question, likely because it doesn't know you can understand it. Either way, it's making the first move.

Well, it's trying to, anyway - but Snivy is quick off the mark. When the other Pokémon charges, he lashes out with a vine that seems to grow from inside his yellow 'collar', snapping the long tendril at his opponent like a whip. "Allez!"
Clay grins at Snivy's quickness, his voice dropping into the same rustling hiss as Snivy's language. "Nice shot!"

Oshawott continues its reckless charge forward, though it does wince some when the vine whip connects.

Snivy twists away from the Oshawott's charge, not quite managing to evade it but shedding most of the force, though he's still left skating back through the sand. Rather than dart back in right away, he fixes his attacker with a scornful look before raising his head to the sky, taking in the warmth of the morning sun. The leaves on his tail and the curls of his collar seem to grow a little longer.
"Hah, look at that! Hardly felt it!" Clay's doing the trash-talking Snivy seems unlikely to. He's shifted to something closer to rodent Pokémon language now, aiming his speech at the Oshawott despite not being quite sure what it is. "Hope you can do better than that, little buddy!"

Clay blinks at the Oshawott's declaration. "Huh?" He has pretty much no clue what it just said, apart from maybe something about nonsense. "It's looking pretty shaky, Snivy. Try and pin it down!"
Snivy closes the gap between them, battling through the spray of water that slicks off his scales. He tries to get a firm hold on his opponent, using vines and the length of his sinuous body to wind around it and pin its paws, though it's a little obvious that he feels the maneuver is at odds with his refined demeanor.

Clay winces a little as Snivy's sent skidding back again. "Geez, this guy... Show him who's boss, Snivy!" Snivy's starting to look... not quite battered, but perhaps a little rumpled. His little vine-collar is askew... which is enough to make him narrow his eyes.
Clay sees where that's going. "Careful! If you destroy him, he won't learn!" Snivy gives an annoyed little huff, but doesn't go for his vines again. Instead, he twists around to smack the Oshawott with the fan of leaves on his tail.

"Hold! I would not... uh, would not see such a noble warrior... oh, whatever." Clay gives up on trying to imitate the Oshawott's mode of speech. He's probably not going to talk it into surrendering anyway if it hasn't already. "We gave you a chance to yield gracefully. Take this!"

Clay collects the Pokéball with a sigh. "Stubborn little sucker, huh? Gotta admire that spirit, though. He's either gonna be a great teammate or a complete pain in the tail."
He glances down at Snivy, frowning slightly as he sees where that last attack bruised his scales. "You did great, Snivy. You're seriously tough. Look at that, he had to go at you over and over to even leave a mark." He brushes a hand along Snivy's smooth head affectionately. "Let's head back to the others."

While weaving his way through the streets and alleyways of Saffron, Clay finds himself in a place he's never been before. (Totally not lost! Nope!) Just as he's discussing with Fan the best ways of finding someone to challenge, an opponent presents himself. A boy about half Clay's age pops out of an alleyway, declaring loudly that you have wandered into his 'territory' and must now face his 'Top-Percentage Rattata' duo in order to avoid paying the toll. You're fairly certain this kid is just boasting (Infernape do it all the time), but hey, a fight's a fight!
The first Rattata leaps from the bushes to oppose you!

Fan wasn't quite prepared for just how quick the Rattata would prove to be; she's sent tumbling back as the rodent's weight slams into her, and Clay winces at the power of the blow.
"C'mon, sis, it's just a Rattata! You can take 'im! I saw you take on three of 'em once!" Clay's voice rises into a screech, and suddenly Fan's eyes flash the same bright blue as his. "Hit 'im hard! Double Kick!"
Fan's feet start to glow slightly as she launches herself through the air at the Rattata, lashing out with both feet.

Fan winces as the Rattata gives her a good bite, but slams both feet into it, kicking it away. Clay can see she's pretty beat up despite her brave showing, though, so he calls her back.
"Nice one, sis! Take a rest!" He returns her to her Pokéball and sends out Sandy instead. "We're going for two-on-two, right? Let's see how your next fighter stacks up against Sandy!"
Sandy paws at the ground, his tail-fin twitching.
