The sudden reversal startles Baloo. He retaliates with a body-check, barging his shoulder into his opponent.

Baloo doesn't take kindly to getting slugged like that. It's possible he has a black eye now, though it's hard to tell when he has those black patches around his eyes either way.
In any case, he retaliates with another furious flurry of punches.

Timburr tries to hold out against the flurry of punches, but they just overwhelm it and it goes down. Clay earns 1 xp, 19 Poke XP, and 330 crowns.

Clay heads out east of the city, towards the swamp (but not too far!) and finds an odd, little green pokemon messing around in the grass. He thinks he may have seen one of these the first day at the guild, but he didn't really pay attention to the grass types.
The Tome (if Clay remembers he has it) says it's a Snivy.

Well, what do you know, it's a little slithery lizardy thing. Clay watches it weave through the grass curiously before calling out to it in a friendly tone. "Hey there, little buddy, whatcha up to?"
He was looking for a battle, sure, but hey, this critter looks interesting. He wonders if it's strong. Getting more diverse types of Pokémon on his team couldn't hurt any, despite the Guild's tendency toward specializing in types. In any case it doesn't hurt to be friendly.

It suddenly stands up straight and looks back at you when you call out to it. It sits there, watching you, and waiting to see what you'll do next.

Clay moves forward slowly, trying to keep his posture relaxed and nonthreatening. None of his Pokémon are out in the open right now so it's just him and the Snivy. He sits down on the ground a little way from the reptile. "You're a cool customer, huh? Nothing to say?"
He reaches into his bag slowly and pulls out his Poké Tome, leafing through it until he comes to the page with Snivy's picture. "So that's what you are. Didn't see a lot of you back home. Too cold for you in the mountains, huh?"
I should have made it explicit earlier, but Clay's Channeling it, assuming it's not hostile.

Snivy relaxes after a bit and goes back to searching the grass for fallen berries (or whatever it was doing before). It doesn't seem very talkative.

"Hmm..." Not the chatty type, huh? Well, maybe Clay can win it over some other way. He starts to look around as well in search of some berries for the Snivy. Maybe the way to its heart is through its stomach?

Clay finds a Nomel berry. Snivy calmly approaches and inspects this berry. (Apparently it was watching you search!) It seems to approve and offers to take it from you, holding out its little arms.

Well, even if it's quiet, the Snivy certainly doesn't seem to be shy. Clay hands over the berry - after all, that's why he was looking for it. "Here you go!"

"Thank you, human. Now, what was it you were wanting from me?" It asks (in pokemon language, obviously) as it casually enjoys its berry.

"You seem like a pretty cool customer. Wondered if I could talk you into coming along with me? I could use a level head in my group; a lot of my friends are kind of excitable. Hot-blooded, you know." He gives the Snivy a wry smirk, well aware that he's describing himself too. "Bet you're a strong one, too. I could help you get stronger, if you want."

Snivy chews thoughtfully on its berry, considering your proposal. After a few quiet minutes of contemplation (resulting in it finishing its berry), it speaks again (good thing too, as you aren't exactly a model of patience).
"I suppose I could be persuaded to aid you for a time. We'll say.. a week then?" Seeing your confused look, it explains further. "For the trial run, of course. I may be young yet, but that doesn't mean I want to just drop everything and join up with an excitable human and his equally excitable compatriots simply because you were polite. No, no, things must be done properly. So I shall join you temporarily. For the next week, I shall aid you dutifully, as any of your other companions would. At the end of the week, I shall inform you of my final decision."

Well, that is... not what Clay was expecting. But he did kind of leave the door open to letting Snivy set the terms. "Well, okay, it's a deal." Of course, now he has two judgments waiting for him at the end of the week. No pressure.
There is one other little... logistical issue. Clay glances from his bag and the new apricorn balls it contains back to Snivy. "If it's not official yet I can't really capture you, I guess. Unless you'll take my word I'll release you at the end if you don't wanna stay. Staying in a ball will make getting around easier, but I guess I understand if you don't trust me yet."

Snivy ponders a moment, weighing the pros and cons of trusting you this much. "Well, you've been polite to me so far, so I suppose I can allow myself to be 'contained' in your entrapment device for the week. I'll warn you that if this doesn't work out, and you fail to uphold your word on releasing me, I shall endeavor to make your life as difficult as possible until such time as you do release me. Nothing personal, of course, strictly business."
Snivy is Male, level 13, Dreamy, with Sol Veil.

Clay looks a little offended. "If I was a big enough jerk to break a promise like that and not let you out, I'd deserve it." He pulls out an apricorn ball and holds it up against Snivy to let him be drawn inside.

Clay and Fan are challenged by what looks like some weird white-blue bear creature wielding shells as weapons. In its own, squeaky version of the Pokemon language, it boasts at you. It probably doesn't realize you can understand it. This seems to surprise most Pokemon. "You! Human! This is my section of surf! En garde, lest I slay thee where ye stand!" It brandishes its shell weapons and adopts a fighting stance.

"Oh, somebody's looking for a fight!" Clay is grinning - this is a Pokémon whose attitude he can get behind. He was just planning on battling 'til his opponent was knocked out to train Snivy some, but now he thinks maybe this little guy would be a valuable addition. At this rate he's going to have as many Water-types as Fire-types, but he can't just ignore fighting spirit like that. He's pretty sure this thing is a water type. It's blue, standing on the beach, and has seashells.
He beckons to Snivy to step up behind him. "I like your spirit, buddy. How about a challenge? If you can best my companion here, one to one, we'll turn and leave your territory. But if he can force you to yield, you'll join me. What do you say?"
