"In my defense, I never heard of ferns with poison thorns before."
He pauses and cocks his head thoughtfully. "Hey, uh, Miss Sage? Did you know D'Mara well?" He's not really completely clear on how the Branch Leaders feel about each other in general. Well, apart from Nalkeya, whose feelings about the Bug Branch boss were... pretty clear. "'Cause we're sort of trying to try and find any way we can to keep her from getting to her endgame. With, y'know, the soul-eating. So if you have any idea where she would've gone, or anything like that... She's a pain to track 'cause she does those weird holes, and I think she put those plants in without stepping on the floor, 'cause they have less dust on them than anything else in her office."
He frowns and considers the issue for a moment. "... Apparently she can set them up to open on their own, too, 'cause when we were getting through the door one of them opened around Red Child - uh, my Arcanine - and spat him back out all clawed up." He's kind of drifted off into thinking out loud. "Sorry, rambling."

Sage nods in understanding. "There are some species of fern that have spines, and also some species that are poisonous to Pokemon, but I can't say as I've ever heard of one that was truly poisonous to humans. There are some plants, like Poison Ivy and Oak, that have oils that cause skin irritation in living creatures, but those don't produce effects like what Miss Tiki described. I can't say for sure right now, but I suspect this plant may be artificially created. Some combination of a spiny plant and a poisonous one. Likely two different ferns, but I couldn't say for sure just yet." She hmms at the thought. "If true, this would mean that Lady D'Mara is a skilled botanist (or knew one) and quite possibly knows more about plants that just about anyone else who hasn't dedicated their lives to the study of such." She shakes her head. "No use speculating right now though. It's only a hypothesis, a theory, that cannot be proven just yet. As for your question, I'm afraid I did not know her very well at all. Between tending to the greenhouse, the grass-type Pokemon that live within it, and teaching my students/Branch Members, I did not have a lot of free time. Lady D'Mara also seemed to desire her privacy, so I never thought to try and socialize with her. My apologies, Clay, Tiki."

Clay looks blank for a moment. Mostly because he's trying to process the idea of somebody making plants. "I think she did some kind of weird experiments, but I'm guessing it's that she knew one? This doesn't really sound like a 'hobby' sort of thing. Do you know if there's anybody outside the Guild who'd be able to do something like that?" Because the obvious place to look for somebody with the skill to hybridize plants is, well, the Grass Branch, but he doesn't want to come out and accuse somebody in Sage's Branch of working with D'Mara... and anyway interrogating all of them would be a pain even if all of them were around and willing to talk. Surely the list of skilled botanists not in the Grass Branch is shorter.
He shakes his head and waves off her apology. "Don't worry about it. We're grateful for any help at all, and I only really know the plants in the area up near Mt. Moon very well." He cracks a small smile. "And you're still nicer than Lady Ashandra." Honestly, how did he manage to wind up in the branch led by a jerk on his first try?

Sage offers a small smile to Clay. "Sorry, I'm afraid I can't give you any names for fellow botanists outside the Guild. None of the skill level required to do what we seem to have here." She makes no comment about Ashandra or how nice/not nice she may be.

With the strange plants being looked at, no way to investigate the hole Red Child fell through, and the dark branch void of any clues, Tiki looked to Clay. "I guess that wraps up everything we wanted to look into here. I can't believe we found nothing going on here. Do you think the others found anything? What were they even looking into again?"

"I dunno, Rei won't tell me anything. She's gone all... weird." Clay scratches the back of his neck. "Did you still want to go out on the plains? Red Child's gotta see the healers, so it might take longer to get out there, but I'm still up for going if you want to." "Longer" in the sense that Clay would be walking instead of riding Red Child.

"Hmm. We should put that on hold for later. Rest for Red Child, and I would like to make some team adjustments. And, we might as well see if the others have any kind of lead....whatever it might be."

"Okay, fair enough. Sorry, I guess I kinda screwed that one up, huh?" Clay sighs quietly. He really isn't sure where to go from here. Maybe he should just find somebody to battle and work some things out... only not Ashley, since he's already down one teammate and probably doesn't actually want to wind up in the infirmary.
He turns back toward Sage. "Oh, uh, Miss Sage? Lady Sage? If you find out anything about the plants, could you let us know?" He gives her the name of the inn he's staying at in Celadon. "And, um... do you know who I'd talk to about old members of the Guild? This isn't about the thing with D'Mara, it's just a personal thing. Is there somebody who keeps records of stuff like that for the Guild?"

Sage looks up from her very thorough examination of the plant, apparently surprised you're still here. "Oh, I'm sorry. I hope I wasn't ignoring you. I love plants a lot, and new specimens like this are a rare treat." She then pauses a moment to consider Clay's questions. "I can certainly tell you when I learn more about this fern if you're truly interested. As for old Guild members.. I suppose the Archives might have something. They'd be in the lower level of the Guild building. Yes, we have a basement. There are no Branches down there though, just the Archives, so not a lot of people know about it. You'd have to speak to Miss Genevieve about it though, as she's the only one who has access."

"Nah. No way any of us saw a portal that beat you up on the other side of that door." Tiki wasn't sure why Clay wanted to look at smelly old archives, but she didn't care too much. She was more preoccupied with restocking for her search of the Vermillion plains. Hopefully that big cat legendary was still there. Also, if the Normal branch was there, and safe as well.

"Oh, thanks! I'll have to ask her about it sometime, then." He probably won't go there today - especially if they're not going out to the plains - but it's something to keep in mind. Heck, there might be something useful for researching there. If they're heading back to Celadon, he can ask Rei about what to look for.
"Okay, Tiki. Lemme drop by the infirmary to have them look at Red Child and I'll be pretty much done as far as what we came here to do." Well, apart from just snooping around, but snooping around would work better if he knew where to start, and Dark Branch wasn't very fruitful in the whole 'clues' department.

After an hour or so in the tender care of the Guild Healers, Red Child is back on his feet, ready and raring to go. If asked by Clay, he says he was so disoriented after getting dumped through that weird teleport-thingy (the portal) that all he saw was a flash of white and red before he was knocked unconscious.
Regardless, with Red Child all healed up, and nothing else keeping them, Tiki and Clay head on back to the Rich Bros' manor in Celadon, getting there just before the gate closes at sunset.

Rei wakes the next morning (after what feels like a long time, cause dungeon delving takes energy apparently), and sighs as she wakes. She's still upset about how yesterday went down. The reminder that the strange dancing girl gave her still didn't sit well. She only got more questions... and Zoey. Which only puts a target on her back.
She just decides to get up silently and start getting ready. Despite the setbacks, she has info and a book. Hopefully that will be enough to convince the doctor to give her a pass back down. There's 'something' very important about a whole underground city. Even if just tactical.
Rei just gets up and waits in the lobby for Zoey to come around.

Holly wakes up shortly after Rei starts moving, having been once again attached to her in the night after some 'fun times'. She silently shadows her lover like she always does in the mornings, just going through the morning rituals and all that. Most of Holly's first hour each morning is, of course, dealing with her hair. Brushing out the tangles each morning is a pain and a half, but she can't bear the thought of cutting it short. Once all is said and done, she hangs out with Rei while waiting for Zoey to get up.
Zoey, as it turns out, is even less of a morning person than Holly, and staggers out of her rented room sometime around mid-morning (10 am). Due to this, she misses breakfast time at the inn, which was served just over an hour beforehand. A strange Eevee follows at her heel, with surprisingly heavy footsteps. This turns out to be her Zoroark in disguise again, though not for the sake of shenanigans at this time. Mostly because it seems to believe that Rei doesn't want to draw undue attention, and its normal appearance would do just that. Eevee are still kinda rare, all things considered, but much less so than a human-sized Pokemon with a mane of red hair.
The half-asleep noble girl, still dressed in her clothing from the previous night, slumps into the nearest chair/bench/stool next to Rei with a mumbled greeting.

Tiki isn't much of a morning person, and the luxurious bed she sleeps in makes it hard to leave. Breakfast in bed does help stir her from her drowsiness. When she has eaten, and gotten freshened up, she is out the door with Star following by her side. She starts towards the inn where the others are staying at a relaxed pace. Clay, and herself, didn't have much of anything to report. If Rei had anything of note that would be grand. Also, it hopefully lead to a less awkward tension in the room....Although, probably not...Perhaps this meeting would run super short, and she would be in the Vermilion plains in no time.

Red Child's report starts Clay's thought process going in another direction - red and white makes him think of Zangoose, not the disaster Pokémon he saw before. Though Zangoose's claws are even bigger than that, so he doesn't know what to think.
In any case, though, the trip back is uneventful, and Clay sees Tiki back to the mansion before heading back to the inn. He gets up early the next morning, not having gotten in as much training as he'd wanted to around their investigations yesterday, then heads back to the inn to see if Tiki's arrived and the others are up yet.
"The others" turns out to include more people than he expected. Clay looks at the sleepy girl with the two-tone hair curiously, and maybe a little suspiciously. "Morning, Rei, Holly. Did you guys, uh, meet a new friend yesterday?"

The 'fun times' really hadn't helped Rei's mood, more of a momentary distraction. As her actions during the morning probably indicated that. She waits for Zoey for a while, and is surprised to find she has TWO sleepy heads in direct contact. She is about to say something when Clay and Tiki walk in.
...And that's when Rei realizes she didn't really think of what to say to the others about this. Shit.
"Oh um, yes. Clay, Tiki, this is Zoey. Zoey, these are my friends Clay and Tiki."

Zoey seems to immediately perk up, suddenly reverting to her bubbly personality from the day before. "Hi hi! It is nice to meet you, Rei's friends!" She shakes Clay and Tiki's hands vigorously. "OH! And this is ZsaZsa!" She motions at the 'Eevee' that is standing behind her. 'ZsaZsa' blinks and smiles cutely at the new pair, seeing the potential for mischief since these humans don't know this isn't her real form.

Tiki is kind of off in her own world as she enters the room, but she stops in her tracks, with her eyes wide, when she spots a new person. Who the heck was that? Was Rei just assembling a whole group to herself now? For some reason that thought made Tiki grit her a bit, but she continued to stare at the girl. She tilts her head, and blinks. "Uhhh....Hello?" This girl's vigor reminded Tiki of someone she used to be when meeting new people, but oh well. Star poked her head out from behind Tiki, and went up to meet the new Eevee.

Star, being a Pokemon, and not a human, is definitely not so easily fooled by an illusion. This 'Eevee' doesn't smell like an Eevee at all! In fact, it doesn't smell like anything Star has ever met before!
