Mayu stares at it a little longer, then decides to consult the Pokedex. Maybe it can tell her what the bird Pokemon is and why it's behaving so oddly.

The Pokedex says it is an Archen. Apparently it can't actually fly, which is why it's hopping along behind her. The 'Dex gives no real insight into its personality, somehow only stating that 'it is said to be the ancestor of all bird Pokemon' and 'revived from a fossil'. Arceus, who wrote this dribble? This is absolutely unhelpful.
It does do something interesting though. It screes loudly, causing a strange plant to suddenly sprout up out of the dirt, complete with unknown berries. It then eats the berries.

A bird that can't actually fly? No wonder it went extinct. But... is that a Grass-type move? The Pokedex doesn't suggest anything of the sort, revived fossils are typically Rock-typed for some reason...
Unfortunately, it seemingly can't (won't?) answer questions. Mayu contemplates her options, then hurls a Pokeball.

Mayu continues towards Cerulean. She can investigate Archen's odd gardening ability once she's had a chance to rest her Pokemon.

Third time is indeed the charm. Corphish may be immune to crits, but those attacks are still too stronk for it.
Next comes a Cacnea! It tries to drain drain drain drain.

Mayu offers the other trainer a polite nod and proceeds into Mt Moon. She's passed through most of the main tunnel, but there were some side tunnels she didn't bother to explore her first time through. Maybe those will be more densely populated?

What an odd-looking creature. Mayu directs Alpha to do his best, and follows his assault with ice.

The odd-looking creatures are exceptionally resilient, their shells turning away even Alpha's best attack. The two that did not get attacked begin to weirdly clap their tentacles together.

What is it with Mt Moon's Pokemon and confusing people? Mayu is seriously considering trying to farm Persim Berries at this point. At least Alpha got out of it. The Riolu gives them an odd look and mimics the clapping, just in case it was going to do something interesting.

Shuckle #1 blinks dazedly at Alpha. Then it pulls itself into its shell and begins to roll forward, building momentum.
