The group heads north from the Guild Hall, angling off towards the west to enter the forest proper. Nothing of note jumps out at them right away. Most of the local Pokemon either ignore them or disappear into hiding as the group passes by. As they head a bit deeper, where the trees are larger and the canopy thicker, a familiar feeling of mild dread passes through everyone. To Stephanie in particular, it barely even merits mentioning beyond the fact that the group has apparently entered Ghost territory.

Stephanie knows she’s more in ghostly territory but who cares! She’s here for her own needs! She scans for her targets, not finding anything right away.

Ruby looks around excitedly. She'd too keyed up to feel scared, so the spoopy atmosphere only served to excited her further. "This place looks like it's crawling with Ghosts!" She says, looking around for one to add to her team.

Emil shivers slightly, but still manages to look more relaxed than Stephanie has probably ever seen him - Ruby and Sapphire would've seen him in more comfortable surroundings in the Bug Branch and in the Guild's reserve. But even with that distinct creeping sensation, he's still less tense than he's been most of the time in Saffron.
"Something sure lives here. I can feel it. Ghosts like to play tricks, don't they? Maybe we oughta be careful."

No sooner has Emil said this and Sapphire has moved a bit away from the group to do her own searching than something suddenly tugs hard on his hair from behind.

Of course, nobody sees anything, but there is a very faint, eerie laughter echoing around the small clearing that the group finds themselves in.

A few more minutes pass in (mostly) uninterrupted silence before there is a loud screech that echoes around the clearing, startling everyone. This time though, the culprit is visible. A Misdreavus is cackling near one of the upper branches of a tree, clearly pleased at having frightened everyone (however briefly).

Emil glares up at the Misdreavus, rubbing the back of his head. "Guess I was right about Ghosts liking to play tricks. Noisy little booger, huh?"

Sapphire sighs, already sure that this little bit of forest is going to get on her nerves. Hopefully the Misdreavus is the only Pokemon here inclined to play pranks... The poltergeist located, she starts looking around again.

Misdreavus does not respond to Ruby, still basking in the lingering scent of fear in the air from only moments ago.
Sapphire, on the other hand, finds her path crossed by a goat-like Pokemon that strolls out of the woods to one side of the 'path' she walks. It stops to munch on some grass shoots near the base of trees.

Ruby figures that maybe it can't her from up there, so she decides to climb up closer. About halfway up the tree, she makes the mistake of looking down, causing her to remember her fear of heights. "Eep!" She says, as she starts hugging the tree trunk for dear life.

Oh look, the human has gone and frightened itself! This is great! Misdreavus clearly is enjoying the smell of Ruby's fear of heights.

The Mistdreavus' laughter reminds Ruby of her original goal, so Ruby, too stubborn to give up, continues to climb up the tree, fighting her fear of heights the whole way, which only continues grow as she climbs.

Stephanie sighs. She walks over to the base of the tree. She's noticed Ruby has gotten scared half-way up the tree. Ruby has been quickly redeeming herself saying very sensible things. (To Steph, at least) She takes out her note pad.
"Ruby, just breathe. Fear is only a manifistation of irrational thoughts in your head. There's a perfectional rational fear in what nightmares I'll make my pokemon give you if you don't catch that ghost and help me find a Komala FOR SCIENCE!"

Emil blinks. This whole thing is clearly just a mess. "Uh. Is that how you normally help somebody with fear, Miz Myler?"
He shakes his head. "D'you at least have your spidery Pokémon with you, Ruby?" Because if they have to go back to the Guild and find somebody with a big Flying-type again Emil's going to get kind of annoyed. Or if he has to go up there and saw through a branch with Fury Cutter or something.
