Asa
"Wow, this place has... everything. Quite a substantial and overwhelming selection." Asa ran her hand over a set of flippers longingly as she moved through the aisles and wall displays. She tried to recall where she had heard the store's motto before, it's familiarity lingering on her mind.
She looked to see if there were any items that Justin was particularly interested in. "I don't think I require anything specific currently, but knowing where to return when I do will be very useful later."
Glancing at the time, she wanted to make sure that she could still reach the school before it released for the day.

Asa sees Justin staring wistfully at the display of armour, but not even bothering to check the price tag. A goal for the future. "No spurs?" he asked the shopkeep with a playful smile and a shake of the head. "Very disappointing. It's like you don't even know your own market gimmick! You do have saddles though..." He didn't really have any riding proficiency, but the idea of riding a Ponyta through the dust into the sunset was a fun picture. Or maybe a Gyarados!

"Well, that's actually a funny story," the shopkeep says. "The Tevorah League recently declared that Pokémon are too intelligent for spur treatment, and the use of spurs was outlawed. Sure enough, there hasn't been a single complaint from anyone about any increase in difficulty ridin' on their Pokémon. Turns out they don't need and an' we been spurrin' 'em all this time for no reason."

Asa
The Cinnabarian researcher paused at the shopkeeper's comment. "No complaints at all?" She found it strange that a Pokemon who had just been captured would be so easily convinced to allow someone to ride it.
She briefly pondered how the more predatory species would respond. Asa knew for a fact that she would have lost a hand, if not her life while caring for the Tyrunts that had just been revived in the facility on the island.

Asa reasons that perhaps the shopkeep is only referring to the select species that would make sense as mounts. Trying to turn something uncommon, like a Golduck, for example, into a mount might not go as easily as something more appropriate, like a Ponyta. Still, once a Pokémon is captured, it usually carries its owner in high regard almost right away, so maybe these people are able to ride whatever Pokémon they choose. She'd have to ask more questions to truly get to the bottom of things. The shopkeep might not know that this group are more than out-of-towners, they're out-of-regioners, and he might be leaving out some basic, yet key points because he assumed they're already known and understood.

Asa
"What about the predatory species, or those that simply tend to have strong personalities... Charizard for example?" Asa seemed interested in the response to treatment other than force to establish dominance over aggressive species.

The shopkeep seems to find that extremely amusing. "Well, who'n the heck's tryin' to ride a Charizard?"

Asa
"The real question is, who in the heck wouldn't, if they could. Imagine all that power between your legs... Asa blushed slightly and caught herself. In her excitement, that statement had come out completely inappropriate. She cleared her throat and recomposed herself. "My question still stands though, do trainers of this region simply not try to ride the more aggressive species, even if they can be ridden?"

The amusement on the shopkeep's face fades as he realizes that's Asa is serious. "Well, Miss, I suppose so. No one in these parts has tried to turn anything too difficult into a mount, far as I know. Why bother when there's already plenty of nice species what's already better built to do the job, and more keen to do it, too, I might add? I guess the most unusual 'ride', if you will, that I've heard tell of is a feller what's supposed to live in Yucca Town. They say he's got himself a Yanmega what lets him ride on its back."

Asa
Asa simply shrugged and let the topic rest. It seemed that most people in this region preferred to settle for comfort instead of power. She had seen it several times now. The dhelmise that no one else had ever bothered to deal with, the mysterious warehouse in the desert no one investigated, the fossils that no one bought to reanimate. Settling for riding easier Pokemon just seemed to follow the pattern. She wondered if the school would do the same.
She checked her watch again. "Thank you for the information, I'll be sure to come back as soon as I need any gear!" She gave a small wave and headed toward the door, motioning to Justin that she was leaving for the school.

Asa
As Asa meandered the streets using Cliff's ever-precise directions in an attempt to reach the school, she opened her Pokedex and set up a request for trading, marking her houndoom as available.
OOC - Asa will use her second of three daily events to look for a Pokemon Trade.

As Asa, Justin, and Bo reach the small building marked 'Hickory Town Trainers School', another Trainer comes walking through. He's staring so hard at his own Pokédex that he nearly runs into Asa. He looks up at the last second and stops.
He's responding to the trade request. He can offer a Solrock.

Asa
Asa seemed taken aback by the near miss. She scowled and was reaching for one of her Pokeballs as the training showed that he was responding to her trade. Relaxing slightly, she looked over the offer and accepted it without much consideration.
With the trade finished, she headed through the doors of the school a bit cautiously in hopes of avoiding another possible collision.

The group enters the building. "Welcome to the Trainers School," says a smiling young woman, "where we get beginner Trainers ready to start their Pokémon journey. Are you here for the test?"

Asa
Asa gave a respectful bow to the woman, assuming her to be either a teacher or administrator for the school. Her face seemed to light up at the mention of a test. "Oh, a test! What is the subject? General Pokemon knowledge, or something more specific?" Leave it to a researcher to actually become excited about an exam.

"It's the Basic Pokémon Knowledge test," the woman replies, returning the bow. "All Trainers who attend this school must pass this test to graduate. Non-students may take the exam as well for a very small fee. Those who pass the test receive a TM. Or, if you are here for the Advanced Pokémon Knowledge Test, which is optional and comes at an equally small fee, you can earn two TMs. If you've never taken either test before you could potentially earn three TMs for very cheap!"

Asa
"A test with a reward for passing? I simply must participate now. Are you able to disclose what moves the rewarded TMs teach?" Asa stepped closer as if motioning for the woman to lead her toward the place to take these tests.

"The TM is random," the woman says, beginning to walk down the hallway as you follow. "It's selected by this machine," she says, extending a hand to gesture toward a machine up ahead that looks like an arcade game. "The testing room is just beyond that. Each test costs $100."

Asa
"Hmm... Interesting. I wonder if a TM trading culture has emerged due to the randomness of the machine. Definitely something to investigate after taking the tests." Asa handed the woman the required fee to be allowed to take the first exam.

"Ooh, I love tests!" Justin said with a grin. "Is this the kind of thing where perfect scores are pretty common, or is there a record to beat?" He asked as he handed over the fee, so his participation was clearly not in question. To his friend, he suggested, "How about we make this interesting, Asa? Whoever gets the highest score across both tests gets to choose a Pokemon that the loser has to catch and train." He couldn't wait to see Asa struggling to discipline a rambunctious fuzzy little Emolga, or something similar.
