It was at times like these, Justin regretted spending all his time on lab work, and little building up his strength. Had he had more martial experience, he probably could have maneuvered the gym leader away from the first pillar. Instead, he'd just have to give it his best with the little combat training he had.

"Nice job, Nike," he called out to where his Roggenrola had just finished off the second of the gym leader's two Pokemon. "Now join me over here, and let's finish this."

The physical blow and the high-pressure water attack are too much to deal with at once. "Whoa!" Cliff yells. He's knocked on his back, crashing right through the brittle totem he's standing near. The little pieces rain down all around him. The totem is clearly destroyed, but it's okay because one totem still remains and when the dust clears, Cliff is laughing and waving a tiny little white flag. "I give," he chuckles, standing up and brushing himself off. "You guys are tenacious. Well, that's all I needed to see. You pass my test. I award you with the oh-so-wonderfully named Cliff Badge. I also give you this: TM 39 - Rock Tomb. May it help you on your continued journey."The Cliff Badge raises your Pokémon's Defense by 1 point. (Badge bonuses should always go in the Mod column.) You also gain a Trainer Milestone for defeating the town Gym.

Asa
The young commander stepped back into the arena and walked toward Cliff, giving him a bow of respect before accepting the badge. ”Thank you for the interesting battle. It was an honor to have you as our first opponent."
Sturm floated close to her hip, it's head tilted slightly as she watched the man. She might not fully understand surrender. Asa realized. She gave the mudkip a pat on the head, both to reward her and distract her from focusing too much on the situation.
With her ghostly Pokémon in tow, Asa stepped back out of the battle arena and secured the badge next to the normal badge. ”The first of many, Sturm. Keep focused, it's going to get harder." She turned back to Cliff after a moment of thought. ”Sir, is there anything else of interest in Hickory? Other than the fossil lab... we've gotten to know them quite well." She chuckled and patted Sturm's head again.

"Well, Hickory has the only Travel Shop in the region, if you haven't checked it out already - Oh! And have you visited the Trainer's School yet?"

Asa
Asa tapped her chin in thought as Cliff mentioned the other notable places. ”A Travel Shop? I'm not sure I know what that is... We'll definitely go, if only to sate my curiosity now. I wasn't aware that there was a school in this region. I think I might have time to visit both, I have to wait until tomorrow for the fossil machine to work it's magic."
She turned to the two boys. ”I'm going to check out the store first and then the school around lunch. I'd hate to be rude and interrupt classes."

Asa
The boys seemed too enamored with their shiny new badge to bother with a response. Asa simply shrugged and headed out of the Gym and toward this Travel Store that Cliff had mentioned.
She recalled Sturm into her ball as she exited. Along the way, she looked for a trainer that might be interested in a battle.
OOC - Asa will use her first of three daily events to look for a Trainer Battle.

Justin took the badge with a smile, and crouched down to show it to Nike. "That's another one down," he told her. He was somewhat disappointed he hadn't succeeded on the challenge of keeping both pillars up, but it didn't really matter. Taking his hat back from the Roggenrola - it was adorable on her, but he might need it - he stood up, nodded in recognition to Asa, and then address Cliff. "Thanks for the battle, the trainer said, offering the gym leader his hand to shake. "You showed me that I still have a lot to learn about actual combat. Do you think you could give me a few pointers?"

Asa finds a Socialite who is willing to battle. One vs one with items okay. No Trainer combat. Does she accept the terms?
----------
"The Gym Leader life doesn't leave me with a lot of free time to take on students," Cliff tells Justin. "But here. Take this."
He hands Justin a book. The cover features Cliff in profile, flexing his bicep and grinning. The title is Fighting Tips for Kicks and Flips. "I've already autographed the first page," he says with a wink.
[Anyone who reads Cliff's book cover to cover (a feat that is not as easy as you might think because the book isn't very well written; it takes a DC 12 Focus check and only one attempt may be made per day) may learn any single Fighting-type Move of DB 6 or lower.]1d35

Asa
Asa nods in agreement, wondering what type of advantage they seek by specifying item use. It seemed like her opponent had money to burn. She clears her head quickly and focuses on the battle, waiting for the socialite to release her Pokémon.

After the battle ended, Fio angrily chittered, having gotten no chance to get her licks in on the one that had attacked her. Moving to her, he stroked along her back, gently trying to calm the pokemon as it glowered up at Cliff, whilst he talked to his two other teammates. After this Maybe he could Let Fio fight a trainer, get some of that aggression free of her system.
When the book was handed to Justin, he stood up, looking over his shoulder and quirking a brow at the book. "Wow. That's certainly quite....to have a book published on your moves is quite an achievement." Oh Arceus he was struggling not to giggle at how cheesy the cover looked.

"Oh wow, thanks," Justin said, masterfully suppressing his reaction to the book. Something told him this was going to require a different aptitude than the books he had read for Professor Birch. He slipped it into his pack, deciding to hold off on reading it until later that day, and set off in pursuit of Asa, interested in seeing this travel shop Cliff had recommended. Hopefully he hadn't written their brochures.

Cliff bids everyone farewell and Justin and Bo head out to catch up with Asa. They quickly do so, finding her in a battle with one of the locals, her unique little Turtwig fighting a big ol' Electrode.

Asa
Asa gave the slightest of nods to the boys as they approached. It was obvious that she was intensely focused on the battle that seemed to be measured by the tiniest of maneuvers. The turtwig was a stoic defender, but lacked any immediately threatening attacks. This battle appeared to have the possibility of being a drawn out affair.

Asa
After the grueling battle, Asa recalled the turtwig to his ball and dusted herself off. She seemed pleased with the results. "We needed a good battle to break him in. Are you guys coming to the travel shop with me?"

"I'd like to check it out," Justin told Asa. "Maybe they even sell spurs!" It was difficult to tell whether or not he was joking. "Anyway," Justin said as they walked, "you have a Ghost Turtwig? That's so cool! Why do you think the fossils here aren't Rock type?"

Asa
Asa cocked a brow at the spurs comment and only smirked at the ghost comment. Over the last few days, she had learned that Justin often made statements to create banter and she wasn't going to take the bait. "It's a difficult question. It might be as simple as this region's machines being more precisely tuned than Cinnabar's. They'd never admit it though. You'd have to bring a Kanto fossil here and see if the results were different."
"Most researchers generally agree that the rock typing of prehistoric Pokemon is the result of the fossil revival process, not the actual Pokemon. If that is the case, there are two other explanations possible. Either the DNA of these Pokemon is more resistant to degeneration of the thousands of years being encased in stone, or they haven't been fossilized for nearly as long." Even as she made the statements, she began to develope theories in her head. She fell into silence as they walked toward the shop, wrapped up in her own little world of perspective experiments.

"I think it's unlikely that, the Turtwig line at least, adapted to lose the Ghost typing," Justin postulated. On this kind of thing, he preferred to think out loud to someone. "What if it did though? If these are their original types, and not changes made by the machine, the fossils from other regions could be the same." Professor Birch had always told Justin he should focus less on the hypothesis that was exciting, and more on the one that was likely, but it never really took. "I mean, we've only discovered eleven other species of fossil Pokemon, right? That's a pretty small sample size. The Rock type connection could be spurious." He might not be as versed on the subject as Asa, but he knew his stuff, and it was clearly something she liked talking about, so he kept the conversation going on their way to the travel store.

Asa
Asa nodded her head in agreement. "There is the other side of the arguement that states that only Rock type Pokemon DNA was resilent enough to withstand being fossilized, meaning that Rock is the prehistoric original type. I now find that unlikely for two reasons. The first is that there should be fossils of currently present Rock types, which haven't ever been discovered. The second is that none of these revivals share that typing. I think we'll know quite a bit more tomorrow morning, once my second pair have been revived."
"The most unnerving thing is that this criminal group may be attempting to revive this mysterious super fossil... but to what end? We'll definitely have to go back to Tumbleweed when we get a chance, I bet that Mr. Jameson has some kind of story about it." Asa didn't mention that she was looking forward to see how Brandy was doing with her new owner. Almost as much as hearing about ancient history, almost.

The conversation gets more and more interesting, and before they realize it, the Trainers find themselves at the door of the Travel Shop. 'Tenuous Travels' it says over the door, along with a slogan. 'It's dangerous to go alone.' You feel like you've heard that somewhere before. Entering, you see all manner of gear lining the walls and the shelves, and the clerk behind the counter greets you with a wave and a "Howdy" before allowing you to browse. All items listed in the “Travel Gear” section of the Core Rules, also Repels, Cooking Set, Dowsing Rod, Poké Ball Tool Box, Portable Grower, Snow Boots, Running Shoes, Flippers, Jungle Boots, Old Rods, Hand Nets, Light Armor, Stealth Clothes, Dark Vision Goggles, Gas Masks, Helmets, Re-Breathers, Good Rods, Glue Cannons, Weighted Nets, Light Shield, Heavy Armor, Heavy Shield, Super Rods, Wonder Launcher, Caltrops, and Smoke Balls.
