The trainers, making up their minds, take action to defend the grass pokémon. Haruka and Dean order almost simultaneously their partners, with Sentinel spitting a seed towards one snake while Wata sens a small seismic wave at the other. The kernel hits its target, exploding in a twist of vines, but the other superboa somehow senses the attack and leaps away from the ground just as the dustley's attack pass underneath. Luckily, though, Erica seems to snap from the nagging feeling of familiarity to throw her modified ball at the creature, who while on air is unable to dodge. With a flash of light, the snake disappears into the device, which falls on the ground with a loud thud and, after a few shakes, pings another successful capture. Seeing its sole companion vanish and being affected by life-sucking plants, the remaining superboa hiss in warning, but it's apparently paralyzed by shock, its body tense and eyes wandering from its prey to the newcomers and back. The mefflora are equally astonished, all three of them paralyzed by apparent fear. EricaYou caught a superboa! You can also pick one Egg Move to add to its Inheritance List, to be learned at a level corresponding to the September Playtest. ActionsSentinel hits Superboa 1 with Leech Seed. Haruka frowned as the snake pokemon dodged the wave of earth that Wata had launched at it. That really would have been nice if it had hit, but... she shouldn't let it get to her. She had to keep on a brave face for her pokemon after all. "... Don't worry, Wata, you'll get it next time!"
Though in the meantime... It'd be best to get protection up against reprisal from the remaining predatory pokemon. She focused, centering herself. "Swords of Justice! Please grace us with your protection, prevent us from taking harm!" she called out before sending out her ward, "Reflect!"

And that's another one. Erica is almost getting addicted to how easy this is. Not a single missed or wasted ball at this point. As the ball locks, she almost gets a tingle after seeing how one of her lock cases secured a pokemon that was completely healthy. Oh I think I've been built for this, that's for sure. She turns to Haruka. "I'll keep the other one distracted, get one of those little flower things before they run out if you are going to do it!"She rounds around the back of their group, and throws her Flash-case equipped ball containing Skre at the remaining Superboa! After the flash fades, Skre's new form is facing off against the snake, keeping it from moving. Erica uses Flash vs Superboa! AC 2 Normal Status (-1 Accuracy on hit) mRlQtWew1d20
Erica chooses Skre, who's speed is 3.

The superboa snaps out from its stupor by Erica's sudden burst of light. It squints its eyes, barely able to see the group preparing for battle, and immediately coils and leaps out of the way, falling a bit further away and slithering to escape. The trio of mefflora shrieks when the snake jumps and move closer together, but when they notice the predator has not attacked - and, in fact, is preparing to flee - they shriek in something more akin to celebration, wisps of a pale pink mist rising from the flowers in their heads. ActionsThe superboa is in flee mode. It provokes an Attack of Opportunity from Skre on its way out, but it doesn't seem bothered by it and is putting her priority on getting away.
The mefflora do nothing but cheer.

At Erica's words, Haruka thinks for a moment, conflicted. Wata had been a little of an emergency, but... did she really just want to snap a pokemon out of the blue like that, just when they thought they were safe? It seemed... a little mean to Haruka. Maybe she was overthinking it? Did trainers just do this sort of thing all the time? She should probably just get used to it, she guessed. "R-right!" she said, readying a pokeball. She prepared to throw it, but was interrupted by the remaining snake making a mad dash away from the area. Haruka watched it go, satisfied that they had driven off anything that would attack things this cute. She gave Wata a pat before returning her. Hopefully that miss wouldn't weigh on her too hard... but it was useful in distracting the snake so...
She glanced over at the pokemon that had been under attack and watched them... were they cheering? Aaaaah! Her heart just melted seeing it, she couldn't do something mean to these things! That would defeat the whole purpose of her coming over here to help them! She... maybe she could just... ask if one of them wanted to come with her? Was that a thing pokemon trainers did?
She shifted over a bit closer and knelt down, non-threateningly. "Hello! I'm Haruka. I... was wondering if one of you would like to come with me? I'll make sure you don't get attacked by things like that again and I can make delicious food, so you won't have to worry about that either. And you're... very cute and I'll take very good care of you. If you ah... wanted to travel, we'll be doing a lot of that too. I can help you get stronger too! I'm just starting out, but I think I'll be a good pokemon trainer for you if you're interested!" she rambled, becoming less and less composed as she went on. Running out of things to say, she wordlessly offered one of her pokeballs to the pokemon. Hopefully one of them would be interested in coming with her! She really wanted to catch one!

As the other Superboa runs, Skre goes to move and attack but Erica calls him off.
"Don't worry about it buddy, no need to keep up the pain."
Skre skitters back over and looks up. The newly evolved Drillinder wanted to test out it's new form in battle, but it seems it ended before it began. He just sits down at Erica's feet. She kneels down and gives him a pat.
"Next time buddy. Stay frosty though, not sure if their call went out for backup and was heard or not."
At hearing that, Skre scoops up two handfuls of mud and waits for the other possible snakes to show up. Erica herself just takes a step back and lets Haruka do her thing. Seems like these little flower guys are happy to see they've been saved, maybe she can convince them. Not the way Erica would do it, but eh whatever. Out of curiousity though, she gives her dex a use finally and scans one of them for info. She reads the info and makes a face.
So they smell nice? Cool, I guess? Not sure what the confusing powders is supposed to be but hey, it's not the end of the world if they run, right? We came in to save em, and we did that. Job done.

The mefflora cuddle together once more as soon as Haruka approaches, but her gentle voice and behavior seem to tranquilize them down, at least enough for them to hear her proposition. They look at each other with interrogative faces for some time, but then a sound from Erica's pokédex scares them again and all three of them dash the opposite way the superboa went. One of them is a little reluctant, though, looking back when the trio quickly disappears in the grass. A minute passes while Haruka wonders if her approach was incorrect before the reluctant one burst out of the turf and runs towards the girl, stopping a few inches from her. It looks a bit unsure of what to do next, but Haruka presents a pokéball that it taps with its nose, the device absorbing the mefflora as a ray of red energy and immediately pinging. HarukaYou captured a Mefflora! Level: 6 Gender: Female Ability: Aroma Veil Nature: Rash Egg Move: Fairy Dance You can distribute its stats as you wish. Two small black shadows seem to be moving in no particular pattern, no bigger than 6 inches (15 cm). The strange thing about them is the white dot on their center, which from this distance almost look like an eye... The mefflora returns and steals your attenitn before you can move to investigate, though.

Erica has a mental whoops as she inadvertently scares the group away, and she holds her breath, waiting for Haruka to turn around and give her that judgemental glare 'again', but Haruka never turns. As she waits, her gaze goes a little lazy and unfocused as she looks around. That is, until she notices two strange shadows along the cliff face. She's about to say something when the little flower thing comes bursting back out, accepting Haruka as it's new trainer.
Oh good. Don't want Haruka to lecture me. Not that it'll change me, but listening to someone drone on about my behavior isn't something I want right now...
As that situation seems resolved, Erica looks back to the others. Causually, so she doesn't draw attention to the fact that she knows they are there.
"Hey, either of you see that... on the cliffs there? Don't make a scene about it, either."

Haruka waited for the pokemon to respond to her offer, they seemed to be... thinking about it at the very least. Well, all there was to do was wait for them to come to a conclusion, so Haruka stayed kneels down in the grass. This... probably would get stains all over the knees of her pants, but... whatever. They were traveling clothes anyway. Though some sort of electronic noise coming from behind her suddenly went off, causing the creatures to start to run away before Haruka could react. They were almost hidden by the brush when Haruka managed to get herself together to move. She got up onto one foot, ignoring the pain in her legs from staying still for too long, before calling out, "Wait!"
But... it was too late. The three had run off into the grass. Haruka stared at where they went through for a few moments before she noticeably drooped. Well... that hadn't worked. Did you just... have to catch everything unaware to get it in a pokeball? She thought that this sort of thing might work but... from this reaction, maybe it doesn't. Feeling despondent, Haruka slowly got the rest of way. She made to turn around, but something... caught her eye. There was something... dark moving along the cliffside further down. A shadow? She squinted to get a better look at it before a sudden noise made her jump slightly. Somewhat frantic, she turned around and found... one of the Mefflora had come back!
Haruka immediately perked up, it had worked! Maybe she hadn't messed up! Though, the pokemon seemed nervous and unsure of what to do next. But Haruka was fairly sure of her course of action, she'd seen stuff like this on TV. She presented the pokeball out in front of her like before and the creature moved forward and pressed the button. Haruka was giddy as the pokeball didn't even shake before settling. She let out a squeal before spinning around in a circle, clutching the pokeball to her chest. "... I think I'll name you Hana. I'll have to ask you if you like it later," she whispered to the pokeball before looking up at the other two.
At Erica's words, Haruka's gaze flickered back to where she had seen the shadows before, but as Erica said, she didn't otherwise make any notice that she had seen them. "... Yes. I saw them... maybe they are Tsukumogami, lanterns perhaps, with their size and that white spot. Ahh, I knew I should have made more Cleanse Tags this morning... Though, I suppose Tsukumogami aren't particularly dangerous..."

Dean watched the exchange between Haruka and the Mefflora. He was impressed by the girl's way of handling the situation. Even though he admired her for trying, Dean was unsurprised when her tactics seemingly failed. He was about to walk up to Haruka to both commend and comfort her when he saw something move out of the corner of his eyes. the swirling shadow's looked kind of like Unown he had encountered before, but he wasn't completely sure.
When he takes out his pokédex to perform a scan of the creatures, he is surprised as one of the Mefflora returns and decides to join Haruka after all.
Keeping his pokédex at the ready he walks up to the ladies and joins in on their conversation.
"I saw it too, my guess is that they're Pokémon. I have a feeling that they are the Unown the professor was talking about before we left, but I couldn't get a good read on them. I'm going to take a closer look".
When he walks closer to the cliffs he turns around to Haruka for a moment.
"great job with that Mefflora by the way, not a lot of trainers I know are able to do what you just did. I think she felt an immediate connection to you, she could become a great partner some day"
Quickly turning around hopefully hides the fact that Dean is slightly blushing. He holds his dex in front of him, hoping the scanner will pick something up.

Dean walks forward towards the shadows keeping his pokedex aimed to get a reading, Erica and Haruka following closely. Strangely, though, the closer they get the weirder the device acted, static and white noise increasing in volume until it was almost unbearable. Dean is forced to turn it off, specially since the shadows are no more than 10 feet away. They were undoubtedly similar to unowns, if not for their much smaller size (about 5 or 6 inches), strange behaviour and the fact they were actually shadows in the wall. Simply two-dimensional blotches of black, almost like drawn or written, their eyes focused on the trainer as they slowly slide on the wall. Yet, despite their similarities, they couldn't be normal Pokémon. The pokedex could not read them, acting more like a radio on a wrong station, and when Erica tries to enlarge a pokeball to try and capture them, the device doesn't grow up as normal, instead release a whirling sound like stone being grinded. And during all the time, the creatures don't stop moving not they take their eyes away from the trainers. Pokémon Education DC 7Going by the regular unown alphabet, these two are an "A" and a "D"

When his Pokémon starts to act strangely, Dean is sure it has to do with these strange creatures. They sure looked liked Unown to him, but the fact the dex wasn't picking up any readings as well as the size of the creatures caused him to disregard the assumption. Even pokéballs weren't working like normal around these things.
He switched off the dex and pocketed the device, hoping there was no permanent damage caused. Dean looks to his companions with a confused look on his face, his brows arching high up his face. Scratching behind his right ear he takes a couple of steps forward.
"What type of creatures are this?" he asks mainly to himself. They even had the normal letter pattern the Unown displayed, A and D specifically.
"What do you guys think. Should we leave them alone or do you want to investigate them further?"

Haruka blinked at the sudden praise, "Oh! Ah, thank you. I wasn't sure that would work actually... I didn't know if that was a way that trainers could catch pokemon! Maybe I should have asked if it was something that trainers usually did first but..." Haruka trailed off, not finishing her thought. Well, it worked, and she felt pretty good about it, so everything was fine. There were more important things to worry about right now, those Tsukumogami... it was a bit ominous they were just loitering around like that... What were they doing?
Haruka followed Dean as they got closer, the static noise coming from the pokedex setting her teeth on edge. Just when she was about to yell at him to turn it off, he blessedly did it of his own volition, causing her to relax. From this distance, she got a better look at the creatures. Huh, they were Unown? Hmm... Well, they were weird looking, too small and being shadows on a wall, so... maybe they weren't? Haruka quickly made a Cleanse Tag, hidden mostly behind Dean's back, just in case they were something more dangerous hiding in those shapes.
"... I don't trust those things. We should go," Haruka said, voice quiet as she responded to Dean's words. She grabbed a stick before drawing more warding charms in the dirt, using ancient characters and symbols as usual, to hopefully make it so they wouldn't attack. It probably wouldn't work very well since they were made through an impermanent medium, but it was the best she had for now.

During Dean's inspection, the two creatures don't really do much but continue on their irregular travel on the wall's surface. However, as soon as Haruka writes her cleanse tag and presents it to keep the unown away. something happens. They pick up speed, their eyes focused on the small piece of paper, and shiver almost... excitedly. And then, one of them, the one with the curvy shape you may identify as a "D", slowly vanish from the wall as if being erased. And then it's on the back of the paper Haruka's holding, its body occupying basically all of the blank space there, while the other keeps its quick pace on the wall, its eyes focused and expecting something. ActionsSorry, forgot the XP. Defeating the one superboa and scaring the other gives you each 5 XP to your pokémon.

As they grew closer, Erica grew on edge as Dean's pokedex went five feet of nuts as it tried to scan them. Her hair stood on end, and her new trainer reflexes were kicking in. If it's in a pokeball it won't mess with them more, right? She went to ready her next lock case and...
Then her trusted items weren't working.
Nope. Nopenopenope.
Despite the creatures complaints about wanting to still fight, Erica scoops Skre up in one arm. The creatures themselves aren't even that unnerving but Arceus help her she's not sticking around if her tech is being messed with. It's literally all she has in this group. Seeing Dean still close, and Haruka hiding behind him, Erica moves up and grabs Dean's arm, knowing that Haruka is already in retreat mode. She starts tugging back, hoping he'll get the picture.
"Come on man, Haruka's right. I am nothing without my tech here, and they work like mini-EMPs, so we need to-"
And then one of them transfers to the back of Haruka's piece of paper. Erica blinks a few times in a confused stupor.
"Ummmm... what?"

Haruka tenses as one of the weird Unown begins to slowly vanish from where it was on the wall. She keeps a watchful eye, glancing around for where it might of gone before something... shifted on the piece of paper she was holding. Looking down... Haruka let out a little shriek as she dropped the Cleanse Tag and took several scrambling steps back from it. That... was new. How did it resist the power of her Cleanse Tag? Haruka felt greatly uneasy, but she managed to push her panic down. It wouldn't help matters at all if she was freaking out, given she was the only one with extensive experience in the supernatural...
She eyed the piece of paper like a curled up Seviper before addressing her companions, "I... don't know what this is or how that worked. And that is... a bad position to be in when dealing with the occult. We should leave, before we do something that makes things... worse." She kept watch on the piece of paper, debating whether or not to pick it up and burn it before ultimately deciding to retreat. Looking at it as she walked backwards away from the cliff, she gestured for Erica and Dean to follow her.

"What the.." was all that Dean could manages as he saw the thing jump from the cliff onto the piece of paper Haruka produced. Judging by the fact that even she seemed surprised,he gathered this was not what she had meant to happen. When both Erica and Haruka suggest they leave, he is quick to nod in agreement. He didn't want to have anything to do with these crazy things and the sooner he could get away from here, the better.
Trying not to sound overly spooked he tries steer them back on track.
"It shouldn't be much further now, we can see the town in the distance"
All this while, Sentinel had not moved from his spot, but judging from how high he held his shield he was also hapy that they were leaving the place.

The group agrees on leaving the unfamiliar pokémon on their own, abandoning the strip of paper and the earth wall behind as they return to the route in order to quickly reach Etaoin. Like Dean said, it was possible to see the small town on the distance whenever the group reached a hilltop, so they easily returned to their usual pace, trying to leave the thoughts about the strange encounter behind. About 20 minutes after they left the unown, their minds still wary about the strange occurrence, Haruka sees something that catches her attention. A few meters out of the trail, something shines briefly and when she focus her stare, she can see a beautiful patch of herbs she suddenly recognizes. 4 plants of sweet potato right next to a pineapple bush, quite a find for her culinary needs. Erica, however, is much more interested in something else, the shiny object that caught the young priestess' attention in the first place. Half buried under one of the sweet potato plants, a blue ball lies covered in dirt reflecting the light of the sun. Perception DC 14You can almost swear the ball twitched as the group approaches, as if whatever is inside was trying to come out or something else moved it... If your Perception roll reaches DC 18Or maybe it's the rest of the superboa's body, carefully hidden in the mud, that moved the ball.

When the group approaches the food and the ball lying in the distance, Dean could swear he saw the ball move slightly. With their recent encounter fresh in his mind, he has a feeling something could be wrong here and unsure if Erica sees the same thing he mentions it to her.
"I'd be carefull with that, that ball just moved. Maybe throw something at it first"
Dean hangs back a little bit and decides to return Sentinel for now, deciding to give Cresclo a little bit of time out of her ball. he picks her up from the floor and places the small bug on his shoulder so she doesn't need to exert herself too much.

Erica was spacing out as Haruka gathered more materials. She was looking off into the distance, with Skre still under her arm, as she didn't quite trust returning the Drillinder to the ball quite yet. Not until they were sure whatever power those creatures had was put behind them. Like, a LOT. She snaps to when Dean mentions the ball, and then she finally sees the shiny Great Ball in the ground. But he said it was moving? She considers what it could be, especially as she had just read it's dex after the capture. But... it's still too tempting. Besides, the Superboa didn't shine like that... did they? She decides to do a similar tactic to before with Pluc, but with a new twist. Hopefully this time they won't fall prey to little thieves. She sets Skre down. "Hey bud, you see that over there? Go dig under it and if it's something that needs whacking you whack it from below. If it's just a ball, pop it out to me. You like the mud, you'll be fine."Might take a minute but hoping Skre's Burrow 2 can get him under the 'ball' and give it a whack before something is aware of Skre's presence.
