Hey there guys,
as the title suggests I am looking for another player (or multiples, depending on the interest level) to run a 1 on 1 game for each other. I currently run a group game at home for my oldest son and a couple of his school buddies, and we're having an absolute blast. However, the oldest of them is 10 years old and as with most kids around that age, they mainly like the game for the battles and nothing else. We've been hammering through a gym-crawl campaign at a really good clip, but I find that they are less enthousiastic when I try to add in some more story elements to the game.
Since I feel the Pokémon world in general leads itself for a grand adventure type of setting, I was hoping I could get someone else interested in playing in my 'Build as I go along' homebrew Region. Next to that, I was hoping to enjoy being on the player side as well. To gauge interest I'd suggest everybody to fill in the following questions for themselves, diving into the preferences you have as a player.
What type of setting would you like to play in? I'm up for anything. From A heavy fantasy setting, to the anime and games setting, to something along the lines of Pokémon in the modern world. Which region would you like to play in? I really like the johto and Hoenn regions myself. I wouldn't mind playing in a homebrew region either. How does your ideal campaign look? I Like the premise of a gym-crawl , but would really like there to be more though. Like I said, I kinda like wild adventures. What are you looking for as character and starter Pokémon guidelines? Up to the GM. Though I have to say I feel constricted having to build a character at level 1. I always like when a clear progression path is visible. As for Pokémon, I don't mind either way. I could work with a standard starter, or anything you throw at me. What's your take on fakemon, shiny pokemon and legendaries? I love fakemon! I use quite a few in my own games and I wouldn't mind any in a game I'm playing in. If a GM doesn't like them though, that's fine by me as well. I Don't care much for Shiny Pokémon and I feel Legendaries should be treated like deities. Not something you can catch or leisurely interact with. What I do like is using a bit of customization to Pokémon. What is your posting rate and what do you expect from a GM: I can post on a daily basis, more if the situation asks for it. What I want a GM to do for me is make me feel like I did when I first started playing the video games 20 years ago. I want to be amazed, I want to feel like I'm part of something new and exciting.
As a GM I have the same preferences as what I look for as a player, but I'm always willing to accommodate the needs and special requests of a player. For starter Pokémon, I usually don't give the players complete freedom, but based on their characters backstories and personalities, will choose a set to pick from. I like using local variants to common Pokémon. This can be as simple as a color change to rather drastic changes in size, appearance and typing. I could run a game in a region of your choice, but I wouldn't mind using my own region, the Marvelis Region.
Let me know if you guys are interested.

Hey there! I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring as a moderately experienced GM/player looking to get into another game.
What type of setting would you like to play in? I can work with just about anything, but I surely do love me some high fantasy stuff (probably comes from starting off my tabletop experience with d&d).
Which region would you like to play in? As with most people, I'm probably the most familiar with Kanto and Johto (with Johto introducing my favorite starter, Cyndaquil!), but I'd be willing to enter most any region, especially a homebrew one, since I wouldn't be colored by previous perceptions of the region. That being said, I'm the least familiar with Sinnoh, so take that how you will.
How does your ideal campaign look? I don't mind simple gym crawls, but I wouldn't want that to be all there is to the campaign. I love wide, open worlds, where I can just pick a direction and go "off the map" to explore and see what's out there.
What are you looking for as character and starter Pokémon guidelines? I don't mind starting at level 1, but I think level 5-6 is the best starting point. You're still low enough that you aren't overwhelmed by too many options, but also high enough that you can start seeing classes come into their own. Almost forgot about starter choices! As both a player and a GM, I have always been of the mind that 'more options is always better'. That said, if a campaign hook is interesting enough, I can work with a more restricted set as well.
What's your take on fakemon, shiny pokemon and legendaries? I love fakemon! I use them constantly. Granted, most are just differently typed mons, but I've got a few that are outright "new" that I discovered on the interwebz. Legendaries. Hoo boy, that's a tough one. I don't necessarily want them to be treated as 'gods', but I would most certainly want an encounter with one to be special in some way. Shiny Pokemon are nice, but certainly need to be rare.
What is your posting rate and what do you expect from a GM: My posting rate is usually based on the posting rate of those I'm in a game with. Generally it's anywhere from once per day to multiple times/day. It depends on how active the others are.
Hope you find what you're looking for!

I'm still pretty new to the system, but I love this idea. Would love the chance to play.
What type of setting would you like to play in? Well I'm pretty open to anything. I love me some high fantasy, but I wouldn't mind a more vanilla setting to get more familiar with how the system works.
Which region would you like to play in? Kanto and Johto are probably where I'm a bit more familiar, but I think each region presents its own unique fun opportunities. I'm also totally down for a completely homebrewed region.
How does your ideal campaign look? Oh, well... I like the idea of having the freedom to follow a bigger adventure with a gym crawl as a starting hook. The option to toss the league to the side in order to pursue something else that my character takes interest in as he/she grows.
What are you looking for as character and starter Pokémon guidelines? Somewhere between trainer level 1 and 6 seems to be a good starting place. As for starters, I like to pick something that I like, think is underappreciated in the games, and/or fits the character's personality/interests.
What's your take on fakemon, shiny pokemon and legendaries? Oh boy. Big question. I am cool with fakemon. I normally like to know what I'm getting into, but I also like the surprise of homebrew elements. Feels like I'm playing one of the games in a new region. I like legendaries, but treated closer to diety status. I don't think encounters with them should be trivial if they happen at all. I think shinies are cool, but they should be pretty rare again if at all.
What is your posting rate and what do you expect from a GM: I'm pretty flexible. I like to keep a game going, so I'd like at least every 2 days or as much as multiple times a day.
Hope you find a player/players/gm that is/are a good fit.

I think it's great to see some interest in this.Really eases my mind that a new guy to these boards gets a chance.
I like what both of you are writing, so that'sa great start.
I'll keep this thread open till after the weekend and then I'll decided how I'll go from there.

What type of setting would you like to play in? Normally, I am up for anything. But I am still searching for a replica of one-man solo experience that is closer to the game at the moment. Doesn't have to be the exact same gym crawl though.
Which region would you like to play in? I am a fan of homebrew regions cuz I like to not know anything and discover everything, just like playing the game and assuming no pre-reading any gamefaq.
How does your ideal campaign look? Really depends on the setting, I am very flexible. But one thing I don't like is a set path. Like small starting town -> Route 1 -> Route 2 and you cannot access other routes because there are things gong on there. I welcome any kind of stereotype-breaking to this, like starting in a big city, region all open up and so on.
What are you looking for as character and starter Pokémon guidelines? I am like you actually. I usually ask if I can "Nuzlocke" my starter. Some GMs told me to just roll the dice myself - which I did a couple times - but I have always embraced your philosophy of picking a starter from a few picks customized for the character. It's the perfect start for me.
What's your take on fakemon, shiny pokemon and legendaries? I respect legendaries just like you. Fakemon is awesome cuz it's the same as "going in blind", I will know nothing about them. Shiny, I feel like is actually whatever in the tabletop game. I like the special thing going on for them though but I have personally giving special thing to normal Pokemon so I don't view them as Shiny-exclusive. And I am fine without such thing anyway.
What is your posting rate and what do you expect from a GM? Well, admittedly this is my biggest problem. I am far from the most active player and can be inconsistent with my posting. I also have a personal preference to not just post something for the sake of posting in a solo 1-to-1 game, I don't want to half-ass a post unless I absolutely must have. 1 per 2-3 days is usually my rate but I am very patience and am fine with a slower but long-lasting game.

Hey guys, I'm really glad with the response for this little project, so first of all thanks! Goliathus: I really like what you're writing. I've read some of your stuff on this site regarding the Varius region and the monster rancher style campaign you're running. I'd be super interested in that to be honest. I'd be more than happy to give this a go by running a solo game for you close to the games. Please let me know if you're up for it, so we can get this thing rolling. sleepytenorRavenIf any of you guys would still be up for it, so am I. I have an idea of running a game for the both of you in the same fantasy setting, but not necessarily together. Let me know what you guys want to do and if you have some ideas to run a campaign for me as well. M_M

Well, I'm always up for more things. I also certainly don't mind sharing a game world with another player (whether or not we're actually together). At present, I only have two "settings" for a game (modern and medieval w/ some "magi-tech")*, but I feel the need to change it up a bit. If you've ideas of your own that you'd like to see in a game setting, I can also do that. * - If you were curious about my ongoing game settings and/or my usual set of house rules, just go looking for "Playtest" and "Knights of Kanto". #shamelessplug

That sounds awesome! I'm still in as long as you're up for it. As far as running a campaign. I've never run one with any of the systems I play, and am still learning this system. So I'll keep my hat out of the ring on that side of things.

What type of setting would you like to play in? I enjoy designing settings with over the top, fantastic biologies and ecosystems, so probably high fantasy or high science fantasy.
Which region would you like to play in? I have a completed homebrew region, called Meihnos which is based on the phillipines, but probably Hoenn or Johto. I have the most nostalgia for gen 2/5, and also trumpets.
How does your ideal campaign look? My ideal campaign explores the mind and the human condition. I'm currently running one called 'Project Carnate' which is a mix of James Cameron's Avatar and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. 'Diving' into a Pokemon and being hosted results in mental shifts in my PCs, it is very much an exercise in role play. I am fond of deep social webs, and campaigns where you settle or develop a region to be habitable for humans.
What are you looking for as character and starter Pokémon guidelines? I have been at this a long time, and I generally look for player characters to be the movers and shakers in my settings. From Level 1 gym crawls are all well and fine, but I like my PCs to already be influential/heroic at a game start. It is very difficult to affect change in a setting when you start bottom of the barrel. Pseudo-Legendaries aren't of any concern to me, so anything under a legendary would be fair game.
What's your take on fakemon, shiny pokemon and legendaries? I use quite a few fakemon, or shinies which in my circles qualify as anything from minor changes to templates (which I've written five at this point). Legendaries don't tend to see much use in my games due to their increased agency, and in 2+ player games introducing player imbalance very easily. In a single player game I could see it working well.
What is your posting rate and what do you expect from a GM: I can post on a daily basis, but it tends to vary depending on my level of preparedness and enthusiasm. GMing for three players it takes me about three days, for one it would be every few hours to every day. I look for intrigue, surprises, and challenge in a GM, both socially and in combat. Being caught off guard is probably my favorite thing in a tabletop.

Sorry I'm only getting back to you now.
At this moment I'm already in contact with a couple of people over PM and with the 1 active game I'm currently a part of I think I'd like to keep it at that. Thanks for the interest though.
