Isabella, you eventually find a section in the contract involving the expenses covered once hired. Along with public transportation, lodging, and food, you find "funeral expenses" in the list.

Isabella rereads that final section a few times, frowning to herself as she notes how some are just signing without even seeming to care what they might be agreeing to. What if there was a Clause that said that they could only keep every fifth Pokémon they captured, or something equally unthinkable to someone with the drive to be a Trainer.
"Professor...is this the first time you've attempted to get Interns? Not counting those who have failed to complete your Trial in this recruitment drive," she places her copy of the contract on the desk and points to the section in question, "I just wonder if you've every had to pay out on the funeral expenses. What sort of work is involved in the Internship, exactly?" The rush of soft words finally out of her, she appears to deflate slightly and drops her gaze to her hands at the edge of the desk. "Or even generally would do, Sir."

"Well, I can't say it was the first time. In fact I already have an intern on call back at the reservation. However, her job is to help with land surveys and digs, not the work you'll be doing. I'll explain more after the trial and you can decide if you're up for the job."

The ragged sheik girl was bring up fair points, but this was Keno's best shot at a licence. He was willing to rise to the challenge, but yes, his own funeral would be tough to surmount.
"This isn't an all or nothing gig or something, is it? I mean, is someone won't sign do we have to wait for more? Once we're in there I don't want to get the boot because someone can't hack it either." Keno was starting to worry that the control offer his future was slipping through his fingers, and into the hands of those around him.

He smiled and said, "I don't think I'll turn down someone eligible just because others were not. Given the circumstances, Sure, I would like it if everyone made it to the end this time. But if there is anyone to turn down or walk away, then I'll take the ones that don't."

"So..." Isabella pauses and nips her lip, her mind wandering to her sister, Katrynah, and her brothers, Michael and William, and even their cousin, Kyrstan. If she became a Trainer, maybe she could save enough to pay their fees should they want to become Trainers.
She lifts her eyes to look at the Professor before her gaze darts away again, "Is accepting the dangers of the Trial before we know the details of the job part of the Trial, Professor? There'll be instances during the Internship that you'll ask us to do things without explaining the reasoning before hand? Or perhaps never explaining it at all, even when the tasks done?"
She knows she might be disqualified for pressing for information if that's the case, but she likes to check the ground ahead before launching all her weight onto it.
Isabella lifts her gaze again, "At what point do we get the Trainer's License? After the dangers of the Trial, or once the Internship is explained and we accept that? My impression, from what little was said during the interview on television, was that the two were linked together."

He smiles and makes a quick point to the girl. "You catch on quick! Yes, accepting the dangers is part of the trial. Orudo is a massive region with huge tracts of wilderness. It would be foolish to hire anyone who wouldn't have the courage to face even a single cave in this place. As for what I will explain in the internship, I assure you that everything will be said to you plainly of what is required and why I'm asking you to do it. You will receive your trainer's license after you pass the dangers of the trial and accept after the internship is explained."

Isabella gives the Professor a slight smile, a light blush replacing the flush on her cheeks as she takes the papers back, quickly checks the pages to ensure she's not required to initial or sign anywhere else, and then signs and dates the final page before adding it to the pile.
"I'm glad to hear that, Professor. I look forward to the opportunity you've given all of us, and I will do my best to ensure I remain healthy enough to take full advantage of it."

Excited to get started on this new adventure John blurts out, "Can we go now, I mean go do the trial, is it ready for us?" Realizing how forward he was all of a sudden John seemed to shrink a bit as he stepped a few steps away.

He laughed and said, "Eager, aren't we? Well, we can begin as soon as everyone else signs their forms... unless they wish to back down now...." He looked at everyone else who had yet to put down their signatures.

Keno was just as eager as John, and glad he said something so he didn't have to. Though there were chairs in the room Keno was to anxious to sit. Since signing the contract, he has stationed himself by the wall where the Rufflet was now perched. There he waited for the others to sign or leave.

Putting his clippers and cigar away, he takes interest in any of the works that involve dark or gothic themes. "Such eh fine work here in this visiting center."
After taking in the scenery one last time, he takes and fills out the forms needed to move forward.
"Simple enough questions eh?"

Jason watches the scene with the Rufflet unfold with per awe. Such a fluffy looking bird with such large talons, nothing like he'd seen on the farm. When he reached for the red credit card in Keno's hand with such speed and ferociously Jason flinched back. Happily relieved that the boy didn't lose a finger. "Shewie," Jason mused with a shake of his head.
Sitting at the wooden table, Jason gave up trying to comprehend the large legal pamphlet and instead listened in on the Professor's and Isabella's conversation. She asked good questions, and Jason appreciated her taking the high road and being the group's voice of reason. But, so much like the other applicants here, Jason had a dream and he wasn't going to be scared off this early in the game.
He sprawled his name across the line and set it on the stack in the center.
"Count me in, 'fessor," Jason grins. "Aint nothing stopping me from getting into that cave."

The professor was obviously glad to hear the compliment on the collection. "You think so? The Wasahgee were a very strange, but artistic group of people. They used to think the works in the exhibits were windows to another world." He gathered all the paperwork. "Good, now you can begin!" he said before leading the group to an elevator in the back. Next to it, hanging on the wall, were multiple backpacks. "These are for you."

Isabella looks over the backpacks the Professor motions to, and if she doesn't see any differences between them, she reaches for one and slips it over her shoulders after taking a moment to put her own bag inside.
She does the actions quickly, not wanting the Professor to think she was ungrateful and seeking to make an inventory of the supplies that might slow down their instructions. Once the bag is resting in the middle of her back, the girl looks to the Professor, awaiting further instructions.

Following Isabella's lead John retrieved a bag from one of the hooks then stood beside her. "Hey, names John, I'ma engineer-in-training. Looks like we'll be hangin' out for a bit at least, i guess." john trailed off at the end of the sentence, his false confidence waning midway through the introduction.

Even though all the bags were seemingly identical, Keno didn't want 'the last one.' He grabs a bag and holds it at his side, when he gets to the elevator, he puts it on backwards to inspect the contents.
"Thank you Professor."

Isabella smiles and holds out a hand to the seemingly-older boy who stands beside her after getting his pack. "Hello, John. I'm Isabella. Though Izzy's shorter to shout if you need to get my attention in a pinch," she offers a quick wink and a blush as she says that last part. "I did odd jobs for Trainers that passed through my Home Town, so I don't really have a profession like you do."

"I'll take the one don't," Jason says to Keno, trying to lighten his decision making. "We can trade items if yours comes empty."

The professor opened what looked like a fuse box on the elevator and scanned the card on the device inside. The doors opened to allow all the applicants inside. "Now, I will not be joining you in this trip in the cave. Once you enter, you're on your own."
