The Hughshow grins boldly at his earthen foe. He didn't really understand what the giant rock creature was trying to say, save for the most important words. Test. Challenge. Stones. Hugh had the stones. They were big stones! Best stones! Hugh Beefmade a Charm Check! | Uxd0mEJy1d6

"Then I shall let my fists do the talking!" Gunshow proclaims, flexing and assuming a battle stance. To fight, is a joy. And joy deserved to be spread as aggressively as possible! If this creature wished to assume this was a challenge, then by all means, he would gladly test his beautiful hands across this one's face! 1d6

What a peculiar assortment of reactions this specimen received. The old phrase "You look like you've seen a ghost!" came to the researcher's mind, and while it was the stuff of laughter and derision aboard the Ark... Well, actually, it was even more amusing when it was true, wasn't it?
All alone until he met with his cohorts, Ulrich savored the unexpectedly empowering feeling of being above the land and its inhabitants. With neither able or willing to stop his advance, even what was surely a treacherous mountain path became quite scenic, did it not? Yes... There might be much to learn about how these ghosts fit into the ecology of Gol, but it was far with far from an unfamiliar feeling as they would do so.
And, look! There was a suspiciously, implausibly noticeable blob of what looked to be Dunsparce, off in the direction of those barrows! It seemed Kiai was quite reliable when it came to witnessing, as well as lecturing. But anyways, where was their orange and blue blob headed in such a... hurry? Well, if one thing was certain, it was that he would have little trouble homing in on the target. With a chuckle meant mostly for himself, Ulrich pondered whether Three would pretend to be another local, and made to intercept the erratic serpent.

Leaving the Rockruff trio behind, Three encounters relatively little else on his way down the mountain. The few Pokemon he does, notably a small goat munching foliage at the base of the boulder field, and several round rodents with a sand-brick pattern along their backs don't seem ones for conversation. There does seem to be a measure of veneration and odd respect in their eyes, the plume of dirt had gone quite high, maybe more eyes had been on Evan then he'd originally considered. Finding the proffered berry trees, it is an odd fruit, a deep blue in color with a rounded body and nubs to either side. The rind itself is pitted, and smells a mix of acrid and sweet. Thankfully, the color of it against the surrounding foliage drew the eye and made it easy to spot, with the plant itself being short enough that he could reach his prize without climbing or jumping. _xPWQoPm2d4-1 Sitrus Berries While Evan enjoys the tangy flavor of his sup, the soft rind and moist pulp, Ulrich comes upon him at last.
"As you and yours will!" The stone beast bellowed before drawing air into itself, arching it's back. It struck not with it's body, but a cascade of fire so hot it was blue! 1d20 Vs. Hugh 2d6+20 Dragon Special Damage 2d4-1·1d20·2d6+20

Entirely as expected, with nary a hint of deviation, the portly blob of colour Ulrich approached was, in fact, a Dunsparce. And given the behaviour Three exhibited, this rather more bold Dunsparce was probably a Dunsparce in body only! (That was only a theory, of course...)
At any rate, finding himself upon a Dunsparce who was gorging himself in the open like some kind of... Confident... Dunsparce? Ulrich dispensed with any subtlety and called out, "Consider me surprised! Not only have you failed to become a meal, but you've actually secured food on your own? As a Dunsparce, I must commend you for exceeding my every expectation!" The tone probably didn't sound very commending, nor was Ulrich especially surprised that he had endured just a few hours.
With his 'greeting' given, the Yamask waited for the pudgy serpent's reply. Perhaps he also hoped said reply wouldn't be running away.

Evan feels a little bit awkward under the gazes of the other Pokémon. He doesn't really feel like conversing with them, though, so their attitude suits him fine, and he hurries along, nervous.
When he reaches the berries, though, he finds they are delicious, and there's plenty enough for him to eat, as well as bringing some back for Mica and her brothers.
His eating is rudely interrupted by a voice though, one that he doesn't recognize. Startled, he whirls around, before seeing... is it Ulrich? Probably, given the condescension present. But, it probably would probably be best to confirm. "Is that you, Ulrich?" he asks, "Or have I mistaken you for another that I have met?"

"The one and only Ulrich, yes," replied the same man who had named his vessel Ulrich after him... "Fun story, apparently ghosts aren't terribly common around these parts. Why, I wouldn't be surprised if me and that Golett boosted the population to two when we arrived." Perhaps that would be odd if one thought about it, given their lack of physical needs, or predators, or... Well, risks in general... But Ulrich was very much not thinking about that yet.
That was enough reminiscing! They had a mission to get back to. "Now, I met Hugh on the way here, but he's... No more sensible on the Surface than you remember. We ought to go track him back down, if you're done eating."

"You met him, and then... left him alone?" Evan internally winces. Hugh has a... strange, non-Euclidean internal compass, but, once he gets a reading, he'll follow it to the ends of the earth. For better or for worse.
"Either way, it would probably be best if you reconvened with him. Alone." Evan takes another bite of berry, before continuing, "I've currently been working on making... connections with those who live around here. I would like to pursue those. And, if what you say is true," he gestures to the ghostly scientist with his tail, "Then you hanging around will not make me very inconspicuous. Pardon my lack of faith, but I feel like Hugh on his own is going to be fairly conspicuous anyways, so, it might be best if he had some... infallible voice of reason such as yourself to guide him." That's probably laying it on a little bit thick, and it hurts a bit internally to say, but the scientist does seem to have a fairly high opinion of himself. Left unspoken is the fact that Evan is enjoying his freedom, and doesn't need a cloying presence such as Ulrich to ruin it. There would be enough opportunity for that during debriefings.
"There's no need for us to all travel together, after all," he points out. "We can always discuss things... another time."

Flames of ever blue were an intimidating sight for one such as the Gunshow. His kind, as with many of his kind, did not like attacks of this nature. It was always better to take a punch to the face than to be scorched across the skin or flayed in the confines of one's very own mind. Fortunately, this was turning out not to be one of those times. The flames did sting, but as Hughshow braced against the scorch of the flames; he smiled. This test; it could only make them stronger! His blood quickened. Now was the time, for a vital action! "I stand and deliver!" Hughshow bellows, rushing forward to throw his giant opponent! Vital Throw cannot miss! But it also fails to crit.

He... had some well-reasoned arguments. Yes, for a logical being like he, Ulrich Gerhard, they rung true! Besides, the worst thing that could happen to this one was becoming dinner. Who knew what trouble Hugh was embroiled in right now... Well, that settled it. "Connections, hmm? Well, it would be unfortunate to arouse suspicion, so I'll take my leave... Try not to die while I'm gone, Three."
"...first, though, I don't suppose all those berries are spoken for? Seeing how Gunshow reacts to plant-matter would be useful." Accompanying the request, the impassive ghost floated closer, then much more quietly asked, "If those sensitive ears pick up any talk of 'Distortions'... They've become a matter of some interest to me. Though with how most of the local fauna seem to act, you probably won't."
Berry in hand or not, Ulrich then made good on his promise to depart, and let Hugh know his weakest charge was safe. Then perhaps they could explore that village off- Bah! With what counted for a sudden stop when you could float, Ulrich added, "Right... One of Hugh's friends showed us a village out that way. You'll probably find us out there." Once, of course, that raw bundle of manly energy could be reined in...

"I suppose you could take one," Evan says, though he'd much rather try and take them all to the group of Rockruffs. Best to just give Ulrich what he wants, though, and get him out of there that much sooner. He will keep an ear out for 'distortions', though. They sound ominous.
With the re-departure of Ulrich, Evan gives a breath of relief, and looks to see how he might carry the remaining berries. Whether he'll be able to transport them in his mouth, or balance them between his wings (maybe they'll be useful for once), or if he'll just need to move them along the ground

With a mighty leap the Gunshow seized the beast's proud horn and dashed it's head against the mountain, the cacophony of their battle echoing down the slopes for many, including Ulrich, to hear. The stone serpent's outline lit with a golden light, the ground 'neath the pair shaking as gold fissures tore into the stone, the light erupting under the fighting Pokemon. 47kQ4jWi1d20 Vs. Gunshow 3d10+22 Ground Special Damage
Evan finds it easiest to gather the berries, then roll them in against his body and nestle them there using his wings. Then comes the slow ascent back up the mountain towards the Rockruff trio. It's a good feeling, having some kind of mastery, and teaching humanity. Sheila joins him from her hunt when he's about half way back. "I trusssst it went well then? None bothered you?" Looking over the Dunsparce with some concern, she doesn't seem to notice the mars from his battle. 1d20·3d10+22

Take the hit. Give a hit. The Gunshow wasn't expecting the golden rays of stone to be so painful. He could begin to feel his bones wear. Was this magic? It certainly wasn't what he would consider normal behavior from such a beast! But the Gunshow was strong and the Hugh would never be happy if this was how his first dive ended! The pair in one leapt forward and dashed their hands across the rock snake with a mighty blow! This would fix him! REVENGE! Rolled a 12 on the AC. 71 PHYS Fighting Damage.

Even just the act of carrying the berries makes Evan happy. It's a simple pleasure, but one unlike any that he could have had on Gol.
He jumps a little bit internally when Sheila suddenly appears. Not like Ulrich could, of course, but close enough. After properly registering the giant snake, he's of two minds. On the one hand, he's happy to see her. She gave him care and tenderness, something that he'd never really had before. On the other hand (or, really, in this case, lack of hands) she's still a predator. And leading her to three wounded Pokémon did not seem like it would probably be a good idea.
"There... was a small incident," he admits. "But, you don't need to worry. I... dealt with it. I don't expect it to ever happen again."
"What are you doing here, though?" he asks, a little confused. "I thought you were out hunting. You didn't interrupt that just to check on me, did you?"
Either way, whether still hunting or not, she's here now... and one misstep on his part could lead to an unfortunate end for those he promised help to.

Now that he was off on his own again, the esteemed researcher could take a few moments to observe the surroundings. The mountains still existed, more or less as he remembered, so that was good. There weren't any obvious signs of destruction... All in all, things seemed reasonable peace-...
Oh, wait, no they didn't. Unless the act of hunting was far more intense than he'd ever imagined, the earth-rending noises echoing down were probably from a well-armed Gunshow. Which... Could mean he might see the extent of what a fired-up Machoke could do! Yes, that was certainly worth making haste for! Thoughts of what sort of spectacle might await him racing in his head, Ulrich raced up the mountain as fast as his incorporeal body could take him!

Ulrich clears the cliff face just in time to watch Gunshow leap clear of shining cracks through the cliff's surface. With a powerful two handed swing, he cracks the horn of a massive stone serpent with sufficient force to set it's head spinning. Grappling the next 'stone' in the creature's serpentine form while in a body splash position, he then pulls it into a piledriver, burying it headfirst. It lays still, body arched from where it has been planted.
"I sssaw the dussst isss all." Sheila responds in a sibilant tongue, but clearly averts her eyes. "Many hide today, there was talk of a ghossst." At the word, her hood pulls tight against her body. "I may have to go farther to hunt, and have already warned the barrowsss."

Silence. Dust, blowing in the wind. Power. Muscles. Glory. FLEXING.
"I AM HUUUUUUUUGH!!!" Hughshow cries, lifting his arms into the air and- Wait. No. No?
Gunshow was not Hugh. Hugh was not Gunshow. Why would he ever say that? Bah! How silly. More showboating for the cameras and admirers! The Hughshow flexes over his fallen opponent repeatedly, muscles gleaming with sweat and vigor in the mid day sun. "You were strong rock snake friend, but not nearly hard enough to defeat the Gunshow. You must defeat Vorp Dragon to stand a chance."
Gunshow touches a pair of fingers to his chiseled chinny chin chin quietly. Vorp. Such an antagonistic dragon. Did Gunshow have to protect him too? They do not always get along so well. Protecting him would be tough. Very tough! Oh well!
Now that he had fulfilled his monliness quota for the day, the Hughshow has become calm as ocean. He was supposed to be doing... Something. Saying... Hello? Oh bother. Just what was he supposed to be doing again?!

While that was, without a doubt, an impressive display, the Yamask wasn't sure... Or rather, was quite certain that the unfortunate serpent had survived that show of force. Well, maybe next time...
As the Gunshow reveled in his victory... Or whatever the mind inside was doing, Ulrich approached, entirely visibly. Prefacing it with a chuckle, he replied, "Yes, a lesson he won't soon forget, I'm sure."
Less amused, he continued, "Now, answer honestly: Do you actually know where the barrows you're supposed to be looking for are?"

Evan glances askance at Sheila, trying to determine if she might not being entirely open with him. "I... saw the ghost," he says, quietly. "It left after taking one of my berries. I'm not sure why it wanted it, but I thought it best to not try to argue. What... what might have happened if I had tried to refuse?" He asks this last bit nervously. While Ulrich might not pose a danger to him (probably), he should probably know why such a Pokémon could cause one like Sheila to shrink a little. Especially since the scientist wouldn't be piloting the ghost all the time. 26 Intuition to try and see what Sheila might be hiding.

Hughshow turns with a surprised and stunned look for his newest encounter! A ghost! So sneaky! How did it sneak up like that? How did it- Oh, right ghost friend levitates. He chuckles in return to his friend's ominous style. "Hello friend! I did not see you there. You are sneaky." His expressions sours then, as his brain muscles began to work double time. Did he know about the burrow? Did he know where to find the burrow? "Well, I'm not sure. I thought this was the right direction." The Gunshow postulates, cradling his cinderblock chin with his rock breaking hands. At last, he snaps his fingers with a thunderous *CRACK*. "I have got it, small, creepy friend! We must ask the rock snake!" The Hughshow crouches down and smiles broadly to his fallen foe. "Dearest comrade in battle! Where is the snake burrow? I must find the Three so I coerce him into ADVENTURE!" Hugh Beefmade a Command Check! | 4UHdzXHq5d6 |

Creepy? Small and creepy, him? Bah. It was his cohort who was large and creepy. Whether he was listening anymore or not, Ulrich wearily explained, "I just returned... Gunshow? ...Hugh. I know where it is, leave your poor victim alone. In fact, if you'll put him down and sit still for a minute, I could actually tell you Three asked me to pass on a message."
From there, he took up position floating at the shoulder of their strong-man and said, "First, we've decided to regroup later. Apparently he's got it in his head to play with the locals a bit, and our particular brands of diplomacy aren't welcome. He's safe though, so we should be fine to do something useful while he's off tinkering in his own workshop. Hmm, right. He'd also found some food, wanted you to have this." So saying, if Hugh had actually paid him any attention to this point, Ulrich would hand off the Sitrus berry to those mighty, pulverizing hands.
"Anyways, we'll let little Three have his fun for now. Did Kiai tell you about any interesting places nearby before I found you?"
