"Fine, let's try it. Nothing else worked." Clay sulks after the other two with Fan still on his shoulder. He's really hoping the thief is at the end of this because he's in the mood to punch something.

Tiki turns around, and quickly heads down the path behind them. She scans the trees again for a sign of anything.

Tiki leads the group back down the path they originally came in on, heading South now, and back towards where they found that seemingly abandoned camp. Surprisingly enough, you eventually find yourselves back at the campsite. Unfortunately, nobody is there. Just a cold fire pit and a spot that looks like it may have held a small, makeshift shelter.

Clay prowls around the edge of the campsite restlessly. If none of the paths were real, then the way Kopi saw the thief go must not be the right way - or at least they didn't keep going that way. As long as they spent fighting the illusion, the thief had plenty of time to circle back. So now Clay's looking for new trails, trying to find where the thief really went.

Clay still doesn't seem to be able to find any trails except the false one they followed and the way the Growlithe left. "Wait. I thought the Growlithe just went the same way as the thief... but maybe..."
He paces over to where he was standing when they confronted the Growlithe and starts trying to find a trail from there. At least to begin with he doesn't think that should be hard - it took off pretty fast to start with. Maybe it gets sneakier later, but anything is better than getting stuck in that illusion.

Finding the start of the Growlithe's trail isn't difficult, the problem is that it seems to have come back at some point and deliberately muddied the trail by running back and forth over it in several different directions (likely instructed by the thief to do so). Nothing within the camp itself seems to stand out.

"C'mere, guys!" Clay calls over his shoulder to the others. "It definitely came back this way... just have to figure out where it went from here."
He starts scouting around the muddled area, trying to figure out which way the Growlithe might have run. "Keep a look out for clues, sis. He's gotta be around here somewhere..."

Tiki doesn't find anything that stands out, but upon Clay calling out, she quickly rush over to him. "Did you find something!? Can we follow it!?"

It takes what seems like forever, but you eventually follow the set of Growlithe tracks back and forth through and around the campsite until they simply end. It seems likely the Pokemon was recalled at this point, having done its job. Searching about the place, you accidentally stumble into a hidden trap. A tripwire is broken, and a noose tightens around Clay's foot, yanking him about 10 ft into the air by his ankle, causing Fan to screech in terror as she clings to his shirt, nearly choking him.

"Gah!" Being suddenly yanked upside-down into the air isn't fun. Nor is having a flaming monkey pull your shirt tight around your neck. Clay screeches something that sounds like it would be very impolite in human speech.
Rei's advice is good, though it takes him a minute to catch his breath long enough to follow it. "Okay, sis... get up on the branch, and when I say go, burn through the rope. And... go!"
As the rope burns through, Clay twists around, trying to soften his fall as he lands, but the landing is still jarring. "Ow... at least we know this is the right way, right? We gotta be getting close."

Just as you're about to move on, you hear someone approaching. From seemingly right around the corner comes an oddly-dressed girl.... carrying what appears to be a giant, spiky/serrated sword. She looks kinda mad. "Oi. What are you three doing, tromping around the place and messing up my game* traps?"* - "Game" as in non-Pokemon animals such as rabbits. |

Tiki runs up to the woman. "Miss! Miss! Someone swiped our pokemon at a nearby campsite! Have you seen anyone!? They had a red-white dog pokemon with em!"

Rei quickly walks up with Tiki to the stranger, more just in case this stranger is less than friendly.
"Yes, someone took all of our belongings thanks to a distraction, and even set up an illusionary trap for us to get confused it so they could round back. We picked up the trail for the moment but seem to have activated one of your traps, and for that I am sorry."

The strangely-dressed girl listens to you, thinking a moment. "Hmm. Sounds like someone went to an awful lot of trouble to mess with some kids. Seems like a dick move to me. Give me a minute."
The stranger doesn't even wait for you to acknowledge their request to 'wait a minute' before walking off. You barely even have time to question what she could mean before she returns, dragging a struggling figure dressed in mottled green/brown clothing covered in leaves and twigs behind them. She throws them at your feet.
"Here ya go. Found your sneak-thief. Do with them what you will, just be sure you're not here in 5 minutes or I'll run you off myself. This is my turf, and I don't like random visitors."
The camouflaged figure leaps to their feet with surprising speed and grace, drawing a small knife and releasing the familiar Growlithe from earlier.
