Rei happily takes the potions and places them in her pack.
"I wasn't sure how long we would be so I packed for a while. It should be plenty."
Rei gathers up her stuff and waits for Maya to lead the way.

"Good. This way, then." She produces an apricorn ball and presses the button, releasing a dragonfly-like Pokémon. It has a small head with two yellow antennae and green bulging eyes with black oval-shaped pupils. Its mouth has two large white teeth protruding from each side. It has a skinny yellow body, four skinny black legs with slender feet, and four green, rhombus-shaped wings with black edges. There are similarly-colored rhombus shapes at the end of its tail.
"Vibrava, here, will be our forward scout." The Pokemon zips off into the sky ahead of the two of you, checking back every twenty minutes.
Unless you initiate conversation, Maya will lead on in silence, speaking only to give directions or to make sure you're staying hydrated. As the senior branch member among the two of you, she's responsible for your well-being; a task she takes very seriously. Averaging a little over 3 Km/hour in the rocky terrain, it takes you about an hour and a half to reach an outcropping above a small village of makeshift huts. Your instructions from Lady Sorra were clear: observe and take notes only. Do not interact or approach.

As Maya mentions a scout, Rei looks down to her pokeballs, noting Kopi's ball. Although it's not exactly dark out so Kopi might not want to come out 'yet'. She'll let Maya take point on it now. She notes the pokemon Maya brought out, and certainly doesn't remember it before, but she really only saw Maya use the one little bug before she got knocked flat, so it could just be something else on her roster. Shortly after they begin, Rei pipes up.
"Maya? I wanted to ask, is this all ok? Taking me on a mission, I mean. You didn't sound too up for it when Miss Shields brought it up yesterday..."

Maya sighs heavily, as if she had expected this conversation.
"I'm used to working either alone or with Lady Shields. I'm not great with people, alright? I work with dragons for a living, so I have a tendency to be short with people. Can't afford to be anything but fully aware with dragons. One slip up and they'll take command away from you at best, and kill you outright at worst. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not suggesting I think you'll stab me in the back or anything of the sort."
She shakes her head. "All I'm saying is that you're new. Untested. This is your test. Do well enough, and you might just earn my respect. Until then, we're just working together, so don't expect me to suddenly open up to you and suggest we sit down and start braiding each other's hair or something ridiculous like that."

Rei frowns as Maya speaks.
"Well I wasn't suggesting we suddenly become the best of friends out here and we'd tell each other our life stories on our first time alone. It just seemed like it was an inconvenience to have me along and I'd like to prove otherwise. Besides, I'd much rather be on at least 'pleasant' terms with my branch rather than just have enemies you know?"
Rei looks off to the distance for a moment, before looking back.
"I can say I'm not anywhere near the tenacity of a dragon, Maya. But I will say being a dragon specialist and a skilled archer and knight is a powerful list of qualifications. It feels like Miss Shields should trust you a bit more to know that you have special skills of your own and that you know how to use them."

Maya facepalms a bit, realizing she may have come across as too harsh. "Look, Rei, I'm.. sorry if I offended you, or made you feel like you weren't welcome. I won't make excuses for my behavior. Lady Shields has suggested at times that I act a little too much like a dragon myself. Always on a hair trigger. I prefer to think of it as 'extraordinary discipline', but call it what you like."
At the mention of Sorra recognizing her skills, Maya frowns. "It isn't that she doesn't recognize my talents, far from it, in fact. I wouldn't be her Squire if I wasn't skilled enough. That's part of why she sent you with me instead of someone else. She knows me well, and trusts my judgement on a lot of things. You recall how I mentioned this was a 'test' of sorts for you? I wasn't being metaphorical. This is a literal test to see how well you operate in the field with fellow branch members. I suspect she figures if you can put up with me, you can handle anything. Heh."

Rei seems to take that as a good sign, and laughs herself along with Maya.
"Don't worry about it, I mean I guess people always underestimate me, and that's a bit by design. I just forget myself sometimes when people tell me I shouldn't be able to do this or that. So I apologize as well. But, lets get on with the test then. I'll show you I can be counted on, Maya."

Maya nods as Vibrava returns a third time and stays near. You reach your destination about ten minutes later. Maya has you set up camp while she keeps an eye on the village. The main point she stresses is 'no fire', as the smoke and the light would give you away to the villagers, as well as any hungry Wilds in the area. You will each take turns between keeping watch (on the village during the day, or watching for anything hostile at night) while the other sleeps. The mission is expected to take a total of three days, barring any strange incidents. Maya is up first, and will be on a 12 hour shift. Then you will take her place. Every six hours, you will roll a 1d10 for random encounters. If the result is a 1, it's an encounter. You will also roll perception checks to notice anything going on in the village during your shift. (You can describe anything you want.) Stealth rolls are not needed (mostly because Maya has pathetic stealth ).

Maya comes back to switch with Rei, and Rei sets up as the sun begins to set. While using whatever natural light is left, Rei begins taking notes about what she knows about spirits (save for Holly and her sister, that might not be the best idea) for Doctor Calthor. Between every couple of lines, she looks up to the village for a moment. Unfortunately, it's maybe about an hour before the sun sets, and Rei sighs and puts them away. She might get more chances when it's not her turn to watch. For now it's time to settle in for the long haul. She lets Kopi out into a nearby tree to get some open night sky for once, and to keep lookout, while she has Shinpuru on her lap, just resting up and waiting for anything to come by.
In the village itself she doesn't see much. Especially with the sun going down. It seems there's a small tavern most of the townsfolk frequent at night, and as the hours go on, that's one of the only buildings with any light left in it as everyone (but her) seems to get a chance to sleep.

At some point during one of their breaks, with Maya's Vibrava keeping watch on the village, something happens. Vibrava suddenly comes zooming back up to to the camp from its patrol route and begins buzzing urgently. In response to whatever its trying to say, Maya grabs the looking-glass the two of you have been using to keep an eye on the village and peers through it, looking at where Vibrava seems to be indicating something is happening. She quickly tosses it to you after a moment as she gathers up her bow and the belt with her apricorn balls on it.
"Something's happening. Vibrava says there is a large group of Wild Pokemon bearing down on the village, though I can't tell what they are. I know we aren't supposed to interfere with stuff, but I can't just sit by and watch a village full of civilians get demolished by riled-up Wilds."
Without another word, she quickly picks her way down a gogoat trail down into the basin, Vibrava easily keeping pace in the air.

"Agreed. Lets go stop them."
Rei recalls everyone and quickly follows Maya down the trail.

As you reach the pass leading up to the village, you and Maya spot a large group of gray and black pokemon charging straight ahead. Maya's Vibrava flies ahead and sends a gust of sand swirling around one of them.

After the battle, Maya pulls out and rapidly chugs one of the tonic waters you gave her before you even have a chance to mention you have a first aid kit. Vibrava flies over and sets down on the ground before her. She kneels down to get a look at its injuries, praising it for weathering those blows and being so precise with its attacks.

As Rei sees Maya finish off the one that went after her, she walks over and pulls our her Medical kit, hoping to heal her wounds, but before she can even do that, Maya chugs down one of the tonics. Rei frowns, as that's a bit of a waste when she can heal some of Maya's wounds on her own. The tonics were meant for more dire situations. Oh well.
"I was going to say that you didn't need to use the tonic right now, and to save it for yourself for later, but I guess it's a bit moot at this point now."
Regardless, Rei sets her kit down next to Vibrava, and pulls out various items. She at first does minor patch ups on Shinpuru and herself before releasing Hikari and working to get him up to full. Once done, she looks to Maya.
"May I, for your pokemon?"

"Huh? Oh, I have a fairly high income from all of the missions Lady Shields sends me on, so I'm rarely hurting for resources. I can repay you for it if you'd like." When you offer to help heal her Vibrava, she accepts.

"Oh don't worry about 'repaying' me or anything! I just don't like to see supplies go to waste, especially when we are out here on our own. My kit doesn't really cost much to replenish, it's almost negilable."
Rei works on Vibrava for a few minutes, and it seems the bug is feeling a lot better.
"There we go! Everyone in fighting form... more or less! They are better at least."
Rei gets up.
"Oh I do apologize for that one that broke off. Shinpuru couldn't seem to hit them, and we really could keep their attention that long. Are you alright?"

"Heh. Yes, I'm alright. Could have been far worse. Should have seen me after I first dueled Vibrava here, back when it was a little Trapinch. I stepped into its pit by accident and ended up twisting my ankle so badly I couldn't even stand up, let alone walk. Naturally, the little bugger thinks I'm food, despite my size compared to it. It put up a hell of a fight, and almost didn't let go of my leg until I managed to tag it with an apricorn ball. Had to literally crawl my way halfway across the desert back to the nearest village for treatment. Compared to that, this is painful, but not nearly as bad."

"Well that's one way to meet a pokemon companion! I've not thankfully run into a situation like that myself, usually I've been just able to sweet talk them."
Rei looks around, noting the Donphan she tried to push. That 'should' have worked, and she's not quite sure why it didn't.

"Well, most Pokemon that live around humans are much more open to negotiations or bribery. Out in a harsh desert, or remote mountain ranges, Pokemon are much wilder, and a lot more aggressive. Not so much to humans specifically, but just in general. I'm sure you encountered plenty of aggressive Wilds in the Lavender Swamp, right? Take that aggressiveness, and double it. Now you've got an idea of what remote, almost undiscovered locations are like."
She sighs as she recalls Vibrava to let it rest.
"In any case, lets head back to camp and get some rest. I'll take over your watch if you need extra rest. You got hit several times that I saw, and Donphan are no pushovers."

Rei winces at the thought of pokemon more aggressive than the ones she encountered at the swamp.
"Alright, I suppose I'll just count myself lucky and count you as a tough one and leave it at that. And I'm fine! A combination of natural toughness brought on through training with my sisters and being flexible through dancing, and it's really hard and gets harder to do real harm to me save for really powerful blows. Those last groups of attacks barely hurt me. I'd like maybe a little bit to have my body calm itself and then I'll happily take my watch."
