That might have been a pretty decisive hit... against any other Pokémon. But Sandy's slick skin sheets the water off like almost nothing. He sprays out his own jet of water back at the Psyduck before backing away again. "Farther... farther... there!" Clay calls out - after all, if Sandy gets too far away, Marmalade won't be able to stay in range.

Marmalade didn't like that. It quacks angrily and then.. its eyes begin glowing a bright blue. It glares at Sandy and sends some sort of rippling wave of semi-invisible energy at it.
"Uh oh. You gone and done it now, Clay. Ya made Marmalade's headache worse. It does weird stuff when that happens."

The wave of energy slams into Sandy... and he can't shrug it off nearly as well as he could the water. He sways for a moment, looking dazed, then collapses. Clay gives a sympathetic wince as he recalls Sandy. "That's one serious headache. Okay, Fan, finish it! Hit it hard and fast!"
Fan hits the ground running, despite the beating she's already taken. She hurtles at Marmalade in a flurry of fists and feet, hoping to bring down the Water-type in one decisive strike... because she and Clay both know she won't get a second one.

Fan leaps back into the fray and quickly demolishes the weakened duck. It doesn't get back up after Fan knocks it down. It's out cold.
"Welp. That's that, I reckon. Some pretty tough friends ya got there." Jessup collects his fallen pokemon. "Afraid I don't have much money to give ya, but the wife's got some food a'cookin' that ought to be done about now if'n ya wanna stay for lunch."
Clay gains 1 xp and 20 Poke XP for winning! Also, a free meal.

Clay grins brightly as he calls Fan back. "Your friends put up a pretty good fight, too! Especially Marmalade there." He makes a mental note that he needs a strategy to deal with Water-types other than "Sandy barely feels it". Possibly he should go out looking for a new friend...
... After lunch. "That sounds great, thanks! If, uh, it's not imposing," he adds quickly, trying to be polite.

With Fan and Sandy healed up, Clay sets out to accomplish his plan for the afternoon - namely, see how Flower performs in a real fight and possibly catch a new teammate. But which way to go? He's not planning on heading out on the east road again any time soon - far too close to the swamp - and he's wary of heading back north and wandering onto someone's land again. Sure, it turned out well with Jessup but there's no guarantee whoever he meets the next time will be as understanding.
So he heads south. He remembers that guy yesterday talking about the Ponyta migrations down that way, but maybe he should see what else he can find out on the plains.

As luck would have it, heading south eventually finds Clay bumping into another of those dog-like Pokemon. Like 'Scruffy' at Jessup's farm. It seems to be by itself, but that doesn't stop it from spotting Clay coming and acting quite hostile. It growls menacingly at Clay as he draws closer, then begins barking loudly.

Clay glances around warily, not sure whether to expect to find a trainer or a pack around, before dropping his hands and trying to make himself look nonthreatening. The orange Pokémon looks like it might make a pretty good target, but best to make sure things didn't get out of hand. He lets out a low bark of his own, trying to establish communications.
Hey there, let's talk before we start anything. Sorry for walking in, didn't know this was your territory.

Packs of dogs can't be that different from Troops of Monkeys, right? Well...turns out that while they aren't, dogs tend to be less open to communication than monkeys. It seems to take your 'bark' as an insult and attacks, sending a small stream of fire at you!

Clay dodges away from the spray of fire, narrowly missing getting himself scorched. Fine, you wanna do this the hard way? We'll do it the hard way.
He releases Flower, and the little Litwick regards the dog curiously for a moment. "Hey, don't get distracted! Show me what you've got - do that smoke trick!" Flower's flame burns darker for a moment as she floats closer to the dog, and a cloud of sickly-looking smoke rolls out toward it.

Flower makes a high, shrill noise of distress as the dog's jaws close on her. She shrinks away from the attack - quite literally, dwindling much smaller as she drifts back from the dog. Her cry makes Clay wince sympathetically. He'll have to remember that Flower doesn't do so well against physical attacks. "Stay focused, Flower! You can do this!"

Flower tries to dart away but she doesn't have a prayer. She goes down hard, and insofar as she's made out of wax that bite out of her doesn't look healthy. Clay recalls her quickly, sending Fan out to take her place - he's torn between anger at how much damage Flower's taken and wanting to get those fearsome jaws on his side.
"Right, Fan, let's show him what happens when he bullies a poor candle. Ember!"
Using fire against another Fire-type - or, at least, it breathed fire before so he guesses it's a Fire-type - is holding back a bit, but of course if he's going to catch it he doesn't want it to go down.

"Chaaar!" Fan screeches in outrage as the dog bites her. She rakes it with another stream of fire before pulling away warily - leaving an opening for Clay to toss a ball at it. This thing is tough and Clay doesn't want to take too many chances here.

Clay makes a frustrated noise, almost a growl of his own, as Fan falls. The temptation to just take this thing down is getting stronger, but wow it's strong.
"Shoulda just done this from the start... c'mon Sandy, he's gotta get worn down sometime!"
