I'll do some brainstorming but I won't do anything concrete until I find out if I get into this other game closing tonight. I wouldn't want to be in more than two games, especially with school starting.

You said "run supernatural past you first," so how impossible would it be to make a Channeler? Nothing obviously supernatural, just that they're really good at understanding their Pokemon and vice versa. Their Pokemon seem much more willing to trust each other, too, and better at working with the Trainer's other Pokemon. It's strange, but you'd almost think they understood...
Or I could go full N and actually outright talk to Pokemon. Depends on how much you'd let me go for.

I am leaning towards making my trainer a Medic/Duelist combo. He doesn't battle unless the going gets tough. He is wanting to go so that he can try and keep the group he is with alive and well.
The Pokemon I am thinking about are Happiny and Vulpix.

Hiya! I'very been lurking for a little bit and just joined to post my interest in this.
Also regarding supernatural, I was considering playing a Hex Maniac. Not a grimdark morose character, more like a Silly-Spooky occultist. Something I feel would fit in with the Anime. Though he'd like to believe he is all macabre and scary, it would be fairly obvious he's actually just a huge occult nerd. He'd be drawn to the island to discover any ancient mysteries hiding in the ruins. I wouldn't need to go too deep into the supernatural powers of the class, but having some actual occult prowess to back up his Hex Maniac shtick would be nice. He'd mostly focus on training Ghost, Psychic, Poison, and Dark types.

Re: 1) That sounds great so far! The species I am currently thinking for the egg is Eevee. It is one of those gift pokemon and to me it makes sense it would be one of the pokemon with somewhat common dedicated breeders. The sort of pokemon you could get at the pet store and gift an young and upcoming trainer! (Also an tiny Eevee is among the most huggable of pokemon!) Re: 1b - Levels) I'm thinking of a 12 ("real" starter), 5 (first catch!) and 1 (the egg) split. Re: 2) That sounds reasonable. So, like mentioned in the op, a pace and encounter frequency somewhat equal to the anime? Re: 3) All right. If I get picked I pledge to do my best not to wander off alone and get KO:ed New questions! 4) As mentioned earlier I am thinking of an Eevee egg. Pokemon for the other two spots that I'm currently mulling over is Cottonee, Drifloon or Ralts. Do they sound reasonable? 4a) Would you prefer if we avoided certain types to start with (like the sometimes banned Ghost/Steel/Dragon)? 4b) Would you like at least one pokemon to be a three staged one (like the starters in the handheld games)? 5) Do you consider Artificer to fall under the supernatural clause and if so would the class be okay to play? They start off quite harmless making plates and so but their capstone is basically a supernatural blast. I'm thinking of reskinning it to some sort of beamgun (like the ice rays and such frequently employed by Team Rocket!) and lean somewhat more towards science then magic. 6) On the topic of trainer combat, how do you look at full contact battling? It does happen occasionally in the anime (mainly with the earlier mentioned Team but also against certain pokemon) so maybe I have my answer right there. But it never hurts to ask (hopefully )!

Hi there, excited by the opening to your story and had a couple of questions.
What is the general charecter age range (if any) you think best fits your game?
Do you want all charecters to meet in game, or could myself and a friend apply as siblings?
Does the fantasy and sci-fi ban cover hex manic? is there wiggle room, if it's light and kind of silly?
Thanks

vahnscraze: No problem at all
Daedalus: Not particularly sure on the Channeller. I get where you're coming from, but its considerably beyond just talking to 'mon or even understanding them. I think I'd need a lot of persuading that it makes sense form a story point of view.
Cbeck: They seem logical and fitting generally.
CommodoreSkippy: There aren't any ruins- the island is pristine, so I'm not sure wht that sort of character would be drawn there.
Lessah: Eevee does. Drifloon is perhaps a little powerful for this level (especially as your starter, and would be hard for you to have caught. Starters don't need to be three-staged, but obviously they tend to give a little more growth potential than others. Again, Steel, Ghost and Dragon can be a little overpowering at low levels, and often don't fit the 'underdog' category either so as a general rule, steer clear without a good story backing. Not completely on the Artificer, though they seem somewhat 'supernatural' they do generally fit with a world where radiating stones can cause genetic changes! Full-Contact trainer combat might happen, but of course in such a wild place injuries might be very dangerous. In the Anime the contact is pretty minor generally so shouldn't be too full-on.
Tazukie: For some reason my response to your PM didn't send!
I'd say age is probably about 14-26 (considering 2 levels, you'd still be pretty new but might have started at different ages). Characters could meet in-game or know each other, though if going for a combined concept then you'd need to make sure they were both strong, because if I have to choose I wouldn't want to have to make a choice between them! Hex Manic- as I said above- would need real story reasons behind it etc. to justify it.

The announcement in the first post mentions ruins on Neo Island that are older than any place already known. Was that from an earlier draft and not what we're going with?

I figured I might as well give you a taste of the fluff for my proposed character. Nothing here is final, not even names, but this is an idea of the kind of character I'd like to play if chosen. Cole put the finishing touches on his outfit and stared at himself in the mirror. Fidgeting, he briefly wondered whether or not he should double up on belts before deciding he'd be better off not overdoing it. He shut his eyes and adopted a well-practiced expression of despondency. Perfect. Satchel in hand, Cole only needed one final thing before departing. "Come on Wisp," he called out gloomily. "We're going. I'll need your help today." Wisp, the Litwick to whom Cole entrusted his darkest secrets, called out brightly in response and bounced from a high shelf to his trainer's head. Wisp continued to hum with cheer, bobbing back and forth on his familiar perch. For all the dark aura Cole endeavored to cultivate, it could not compete against Wisp's eternally sunny disposition. Cole could not help but crack a smile as he headed downstairs.
It was nearly an hour after leaving the house that Cole arrived at his destination, Solaceon Ruins. This is where he spent a great deal of his time, feeling more at home here than in the relaxed and peaceful atmosphere of Solaceon Town itself. The ruins were well known around the region, let alone his hometown, and while Cole knew inside that the likelihood of him making a startling new discovery were exceedingly slim, that did not stop him from hoping that one day he would. A secret corridor, an ancient Pokemon, a new power so overwhelming it would turn the entire occult community on its head and catapult him into legend . Cole reveled in the thought and snickered, more of a cackle really, which drew strange looks from the nearby hikers. Cole ignored them, Wisp waved hello.
Several chambers deep, Cole was busy scratching out a circle in chalk and arranging candles at specific points along the circumference. There was an unusual amount of Unown about today, which Cole took as a good omen. The Unown were not aggressive after all, save for the one time Cole had attempted to manhandle the Pokemon into the form of ancient words of power. Cole shuddered. He preferred not to remember that time. After perhaps 10 minutes of neurotically positioning and re-positioning the candles, Cole seemed satisfied and sat cross-legged in the center. "WIsp, if you would." Brightly as ever, Wisp nodded and lit each candle in sequence with a few well aimed puffs of flame. Chirping happily at a job well done, he bounced into his position as the uppermost candle, though an eyebrow twitch from Cole urged him ever so slightly to the right.
With the stage set, Cole began to commune with the latent energy of the ruins. Or, that was the goal at least. Maybe not energy, maybe long lost spirits. Maybe an entity of another dimension, or the fabric of reality himself. Either way, there was some ancient and eldritch source of power filling the ruins, and Cole was going to commune with it, damnit! Today was something new, a chant of his own design, with elements picked from the most effective parts of the 27 other failed rituals he had tried in the past. He would continue until exhaustion consumed him. Only when starvation was imminent and he would soon leave this mortal coil (a time at which Cole was certain his arcane powers would be at their peak) would he cease his ritual. That or, after some unmeasured amount of time, Wisped yawned. An eye snapped open and glared at the little Pokemon, who smiled backsheepishly apologetic. Cole sighed. He could not be mad at Wisp. They were, after all, bound tightly together by the strings of fate. Nothing, not even he himself, cold break that bond. With care, Cole picked up Wisp and rested the Litwick on his lap. "It's alright, Wisp." he cooed with compassion. "We'll just try again later."
Cole was beginning to collect the low-burning candles of his ritual circle when he finally noticed the truly alarming amount of Unown now circling the chamber. All at varied speeds, the swarm seemed more excited than agitated,. Most flew even paths, whis some changed direction at a moment's notice, and a few others bobbed a wave pattern along their orbit. Even the stairway seemed inaccessible to Cole, blocked by so many little black shapes. Cole stared in awe at a sight he had never before witnessed. Curiouser still, he realized that only three forms of Unown were present- "E", "N", and "O", forms not ordinarily abundant in this section of the ruins. Cole stood. At that, the Unknown froze and, a moment later, scattered, flooding up the stairs in a tide of black and white. "Wait!" Cole shouted, desperate to reach out to the enigmatic Pokemon, to understand what they wanted to tell him. He slumped in rejection as the final trails of the swarm began to disappear into the darkness. It was as he expected, another failure. Wisp however, tugged doggedly at Cole's pants, calling out with urgency. Cole cast his eyes to the Litwick, then to the direction it was pointing. Three Unown remained, hovering just at the edge of the guttering candlelight., regarding Cole with apparent curiosity. "N-E-O..." he read aloud, and they too fled to join their brethren.
All along the journey home Cole wracked his brain for the meaning of the sign he was given. "Neo", perhaps that he should continue his efforts and try a new method? Maybe the spelling was not in order, and instead they spelled out "One" to him, signifying that he was indeed the one chosen for a destiny beyond mortal ken. Or maybe the ritual didn't actually work at all, and the whole thing was just a coincidence. These thoughts haunted him as he slowly drifted to sleep that night.
The next day was the day of the long awaited 'Announcement' by the Pokemon League. Cole sat on the couch somberly eating cereal next to his brother as they watched. While his brother's eyes were glued to the TV, Cole was half listening, still lost in thought about the mystic message from the day before. Then, he heard it. Cole perked up and leaned forward, listening intently. Something something 'discovered', something something 'journey', something 'challenge', and then there it was again. "Neo Island."
"This is it!" he jumping to his feet, dropping his bowl. "NEO Island!" he exclaimed again, pointing to the TV urgently. "This is my destiny, my calling!" Cole went on, grasping his brother by the collar, eyes glittering and faces uncomfortably close. Satellite imagery of ruins unlike any Cole knew panned across the screen as he cried in triumph. "This is where I will make my mark! This is Fate calling out to me, showing me the place where I will discover the unknown truths of this world! The land where I will see the unseen, hear the unheard, and ingrain into my mind that ancient knowledge of entities from realms unimaginable. I can already feel my soul being tugged in to direction of my destiny, brother! I will answer the call, I will touch both Heaven and Hell, and there I will ascend into myth unlike any before!" Cole posed in victory, finally knowing his life's meaning. Sharing in Cole's triumph, his brother unceremoniously shoved Cole and his display of theatrics aside. "You're blocking the TV."
Wisp, for his part, quietly cleaned up the spilled cereal. Okay, so that went on way longer than I expected. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed the read, and also that the formatting kept despite the spoiler cut...

That sounds good : ) I'm going on a small trip for a few days so I will not get the chance to complete my submission until I get home on sunday. Here is what I have added so far. It is not much, but it may serve as an good indication as to where I'm aiming at least mechanically.

Not sure if you saw my message, but was wondering about having Riolu and Larvitar for starters. Was thinking of having Abra, but with no offensive abilities, it would be difficult to train it. ^_^;

Skippy: That's a detail I'd completely forgotten I'd put in actually! The story looks really interesting, I'm just concerned about the idea of a ghost type at so low a level.
Lessah: Not a lot I can say at the moment- the rules seem fine but no backstory!
Vahn: I did- just been a bit busy so haven't been on- should have a reply now!

Being new to the system, I'm not sure what makes Ghost types so strong early on. I don't mind nerfing certain aspects of Litwick until it levels up some. It's more important to me to have a Litwick than to have a strong Pokemon.

It's more important to me to have a Litwick than to have a strong Pokemon. It's generally the prevalence of Normal Type attacks at low levels, as well as the immunity to non-capability-modified Struggle Attacks, meaning that it can be difficult, or impossible, for opponents to hurt them. It's much less noticeable at higher levels, due to greater coverage, and more Pokémon availability.

With your Litwick, if it were your 'second' mon with a much lower level it might be possible. Just think how hard it would have been to beat a Ghost Gym in the games if it was the first.

So I've been thinking and, considering that Trainer combat isn'the going to come up very much, there isn'the really any reason to play a Hex Maniac, as that is all they are good at. I'll probably continue to to make a trainer who is Hex Maniac in fluff, but not as an actual class.
So now I've got to choose something new, and I'm thinking Mentor. I'll be able to serve as a Move Tutor eventually (maybe even one day the island's resident Tutor) which seems interesting, and Cole can always spin it like he is tapping into arcane forces to unlock a Pokemon's true potential... at least in his head.
Was anyone else considering Mentor? I don't wanna step on any toes.

cbeck: not a lot I can say yet- the stats look fine though.
Skippy: That's certainly a possibility.
