Vincent's forehead was scrunched a little in the form of a frown. He was lost in thought as he slowly into the cafeteria of the Pokemon Center.
I made it from Pallet Town to Viridian easily enough, but there's no way I can deal with the Pokemon in Viridian Forest - especially the Bug-types - and beyond on my own. I need a partner or group. Another Trainer or two.
If Vincent was honest with himself, he wasn't too sure about the idea of travelling together with someone. ´Even as he had grown up in a mansion, he had always preferred to depend solely on himself and his Pokemon and so wasn't used to being part of a team. Speaking of a team, Vincent still didn't really have much of one. It was a little funny, he'd been ahead of most Trainers who received a starter Pokemon from Professor Oak, but now he was likely behind all of them. They surely caught at least one more Pokemon.
Well, it doesn't matter. I'm sure Machiavelli could beat all of them. Vel was born to be a Champion's Pokemon.
Sure of his partners strength, Vincent returned to his search for food. Machiavelli had already been given a portion of food earlier. The Pokemon was small but he had a big stomach. Once Vincent finished eating he decided he'd find another Trainer from Pallet and ask to join them. He wouldn't allow himself to be stuck in Viridian. That wasn't going to be his fate.
Imagine Vincent's surprise when he a Trainer he recognized from Pallet walked into the cafeteria, likely also in search of sustenance. He quickly got two portions of continental breakfast and then walked up to the girl. "Hey, you're a Pallet Trainer right? I remember you. I am too, if you don't remember me. My name's Vincent. Look, I noticed you're on your own and Viridian Forest is dangerous for a single person, not to talk of the routes beyond it. I was thinking, maybe we could team up? We can talk about it over breakfast." Vincent gestures with the breakfast he was balancing, attempting to entice the girl with the promise of food.

(OoC enticing someone with food at a place that already has free food is a bad plan ) " Well, my friends kinda ditched me, so I don't see why we couldn't talk things over breakfast," the newly minted trainer replied, making her way to the buffet line with her three pokéfriends in tow, each with appropriately sized trays. " Just give me one second to load up." After a fashion, the four returned, BIllie Jean carrying a plate of tofu omlette with sauteed mushrooms, and Buddy Holly and Boy 2 man eyeing their respective plates of berries on JoJo's tray. She set them down, and the two rodents went to town on their handfuls of berries. " Anyway, it's nice to meet you Vincent. Name's Jolyne Joyce, though you probably know me as JoJo. I make the nicest clothes this side of Celadon!"

"Nice to meet you too, JoJo," Vincent said. "Good to know who I should come to when my clothes get torn, huh?" He smiled. He hadn't actually remembered her name, but he figured it wasn't necessary to tell the girl that. He almost raised an eyebrow at hearing that the girl had been abandoned. She seemed nice enough, Vincent wondered why her friends left her.
Surreptitiously, Vincent eyed the Jolyne's Pokemon. Her team apparently consisted mostly of the wild Pokemon of Route 1. That little pink one was interesting though.
So she probably has a Fairy type. That's a non-advantageous match-up for Machiavelli. He could still take it, of course, but we would have to work for it.
Vincent's internal ruminations didn't show at all on his face, which held a calm but not disinterested expression. "So are you a Pallet Town native, or did you just get a Pokemon there?"

"Pallet Girl, born and raised. Yourself? Oh wait, better question: are you going in on the bug catching contest today? It gives a pretty great prize: two thousand pokeyen and an evolution stone. It'll come in handy when Billie Jean's ready to hit her peak"

"I'm actually from Johto, near Cherrygrove City," Vincent said. "Oh, the bug catching contest? Yeah it sounds great, although my only Pokemon is a Dark-type which means I'm probably going to be at a disadvantage. But you know what, I think I'm going to join anyway."

" If you asked him I'm sure my Sentret Buddy Holly would be happy to help you. What do you say Bud?" Sentret looks at Vincent appraisingly. Charm DC 5 if you want to use Buddy Holly for the bug catching contest

Vincent is a little taken aback. He didn't expect this offer. It was a little tempting, providing what Vincent hoped to be a reliable temporary partner that could take the hits that Machiavelli couldn't.
In the end though, do I really want to depend on the kindness of this girl?
Vincent's mind was running at a quick pace as he debated the pros and cons on taking the offer. The act of being helped might grate on Vincent, but wouldn't he regret it if he failed because he didn't take the help? Eventually, he shook his head. He would try and do this on his own merits and if he failed because of it, then he deserved to fail.
"Thank you for the offer," he said, looking at both the Pokemon and the Trainer. "But I think I need to do this with my own Pokemon. Using someone else's Pokemon just doesn't quite sit right with me. I really appreciate it though. You're very kind."
Too kind maybe. What kind of person would just hand over a Pokemon to what was essentially a stranger like it was nothing?
Mentally Vincent shook his head. He hoped the girl wouldn't pay for her kindness one day. "I might be more open to this kind of thing in the future though," he added.
Once I know that you are reliable and I can trust you. Once... we're friends. Maybe.

"It's just as well, Billie Jean isn't quite ready for the front lines anyway, I probably would've needed Buddy's help eventually. Oh crap, the contest starts in like, 30 minutes! we should finish eating and be on our way"
With that, JoJo drains the glass of oran juice she'd been nursing and watched on edge as Billie Jean took her time with that damned omlette.

Vincent who had been eating between the pauses in conversation finished off the last pieces of a berry muffin. It had been pretty good. Idly Vincent wondered which berry it was made with, he hadn't really paid attention when he took it. He'd already drunken his own glass of oran juice.
"Alright, I'm ready," Vincent said finally, looking at the pink Pokemon eat. It really was a good thing that Machiavelli had already eaten.

(I'm assuming you are headed straight for the Forest for the Contest.)
The two of you head directly to the Viridian Forest, eager to participate in the Bug Catching Contest. The event has already drawn quite a crowd, both spectators and participants. There are a few Pokemon Rangers that seem to be serving as the Referees/Security. Unlike the National Park in Johto, Viridian Forest is quite a bit more wild. Thankfully, the event doesn't seem to have started just yet. All you need to do is follow the group of Trainers to the registration.

The dancer carried Billie Jean through the line as usual, filled out the papers, dotted "i"s crossed the "t"s, and picked up the instructional pamphlet with rules and stuff

Vincent walked calmly by Jolyne's side. He noticed that she kept her Pokemon out. Vincent felt almost a little jealous, but then he remembered why he didn't have Vel out all the time. The little tyke was far too mischievous and was always looking to fight someone, not caring about whether his opponent even knew they were an opponent. He'd gotten in trouble in Pallet, so as a lesson, Vincent would keep him in his ball for a while. When the Pokemon calmed down a little, Vincent would let him roam free again. The method seemed to work as Vel was already a little more well-behaved when they had trained earlier in the day. Vincent would let him out soon, it wasn't as if he wanted to break the Pokemon's spirit. He liked that Vel was so eager to fight, he just had to control his urges. Once they reached Viridian Forest, Vincent easily moved through the crowd, finding it somewhat similar to weaving between the trees in the forest that surrounded his mansion. Speaking of which, that forest had ruined any chance of Vincent being impressed by Viridian Forest, even though at home there hadn't been many Pokemon. It also made Vincent too lazy to learn proper survival techniques since the mansion was so close to the forest. Vincent hoped he wouldn't need any survival tricks on the real trip through Viridian Forest. Vincent was right behind Jolyne in the registration line and quickly filled out the papers he was given. He was a little excited now, wondering what he would catch. Would he find a rare Scyther maybe? They learn Pursuit and probably Night Slash don't they? That's about all I know about them. They probably have Bug-type moves too. I should be careful if I really do encounter one of them. Thanks for reminding me about training. Machiavelli has gained a total of 14 exp over the two days. Critical Hit and Effect Range is increased by 1 for the rest of the day.

With her entry into the contest begun, JoJo carried Billie Jean deeper into the forest. The dancer had an inspired idea. the bigger pokemon eat more, and most bugs strip tree bark, so if she could find areas where trees have more of their bark stripped away, she'll probably find bigger, stronger pokemon. JoJo doesn't see any trees with stripped bark, but does spy a green cocoon leaning against a tree. Revenant, whenever you want to search for Pokemon, just roll a 1d100 to search. If the roll turns up 100, it's a shiny!

Vincent saw JoJo take off and proceeded to follow her example, walking into the forest with sure steps that belied his nervousness. He grabbed the single Pokeball at his hip and called out Machiavelli in a flash of light. "Grrr," The Pokemon growled upon release, not at anyone or thing in particular, it was just something he did. "We're going Pokemon hunting Vel. Get ready to fight something." The reptilian Pokemon didn't reply, but Vincent saw his eyes take on a new focus and his version of a savage grin grew, small, but razor sharp teeth showing. "Let's go," Vincent said and together they went off in search of Pokemon. The rarest of the Pokemon tended to be strong and more solitary as far as Vincent knew. He could be wrong and his knowledge of Pokemon was quite meager. Maybe if he went in deep enough he'd find them? And so Vincent went in, deeper and deeper, making sure to stay hidden within the shadows of the trees so he could both avoid notice and enact an ambush on a Pokemon. Stealth: Ju1pbSFk4d6

Opposed Perception vs Machiavelli 6RXFs9KH2d6
Vincent and Machiavelli sneak through the shadows of the massive trees. Eventually, they stumble upon what appears to be a "hive" of some kind. There are multiple Kakuna stuck to the side of a tree. The Pokedex claims they are immobile until evolution, but trying to assault one among the group would probably be a bad idea. It may attract unwanted attention. Backtracking slightly, Vincent spots a solitary Kakuna on a nearby tree. It's far enough from the hive that it shouldn't trigger a swarm, and Kakuna is, at the very least, a decent Pokemon to use for the competition.2d6

JoJo grimaced at the metapod. It didn't look like much. She gave a shrug and produced a ball from her backpack and let it fly.

The ball flies true, dragging the metapod inside. However, the metapod proves too strong to be captured right away. It breaks free of the ball with ease.
(Keep in mind that these bugs can be battled. This isn't the Safari Zone.)
While JoJo and Vincent stalk their potential contest entries, another competitor is on the prowl for his own entry...

(I could've punched any one of the pokemon I've caught so far, but there's no reason to. At level 10 it's a 50-50 shot. Actually yeah, after doing the math, I might want to do more punching.)
JoJo simply snapped her fingers and moved on. This one isn't winnning any prizes

The young man in the mask peers around the forest, keeping his eyes peeled for movement. He pulls out a Poké Ball and releases an Abra.
"Find us something good, Abra," he says, his jovial voice muffled by the decorative mask.
While still asleep, Abra points to the east. The masked man creeps in that direction while Abra periodically blips out of and back into existence, teleporting to its Trainer's side every time the distance between them grows too great.
