The old bartender was busy wiping his glass with a rag, checking it every so often as he spoke to you.
"Things sure have changed around here, y'know that? It's been, what, sixty years since that boy Red went and beat the League? Lot's changed since then. Things ain't like they used to be. Used to be kids would go off gallivanting around from town to town, challenging Gym Leaders and pointing their shiny new Pokedex at anything that moved. Bad guys wore a suit with a big ol' 'R' on their chests, and gave you a song and dance routine before they held you up. Yeah, those were the days."
He eyes the glass, noticing a spec, and went back at it with the rag.
"Man, how times have changed. 'Progress', they called it, right? Kids started going to school instead of off on their adventures. All those fancy roads paved over the old routes. Towns turned to cities, and cities got bigger. World isn't as big as it used to be," he said, looking up at the ceiling. Reminiscing.
"Back then they used to have regular old Pokemon Battles. You kept your feet planted firm on the ground. It was all about who was stronger, who's the better trainer, who's built a better team... And who would've thought high flying, fire breathing dragons and turtles with cannons in their shells would've gotten boring? Now, heh, all that while you're pushing 90 'round a high speed embankment. All a big show and spectacle to draw in the big crowds...and the big bucks," he said shaking his head. "It used to be about heart...now it's all about the fame and fortune..."
The bartender examined his glass again. Satisfied, he put it up on the shelf and grabbed another one, going to work with his rag.
"But hey, you didn't come to listen to some old washout carry on about the good ol' days. What brings a fella like you to The Great Port of Pallet, huh? What's your story?"

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to Pokemon: The Kanto Circuit! This is a high octane, fast paced, takes itself too seriously, episodic comedy game, run by yours truly and my Co-GM Breakthelevee! It's set sixty years into the future of the Pokemon Universe, and things certainly have changed! The League as you knew it is gone, as with the traditional gym crawl, and in its place you have The Kanto Motorsports Authority! They oversee the exhibition races that have seized the hearts and minds of the everyday citizen. Battles are now fought as exhibitions with the trainer, now a Rider, commanding the battle from atop his motorcycle as his pokemon run along beside him, and when your 'mons take a hit, you're gonna feel it too!
The locales have changed up a bit too! For starters(heh), Pallet Town, once known for the motto of "A Pure White Beginning" is now a soot stained Industrial Port City where dreams are born out of spare parts in an abandoned dockside warehouse. If you want to see more, well, you'll just have to wait and see!
So let's get right down to the nitty gritty. The Crunch.
We're looking for three to four intrepid players to form a motorsports team, starting in the Port of Pallet and moving to take the regional races by storm! There are a couple of basic roles that will need to be filled for the party to function, but first let's talk about some of the custom rules that will be involved.
We're going to be using some homebrew that was cooked up a while back, with a few tweaks to flavor the setting. A link to the homebrew can be found below, but to give you the jist of it, you and your pokemon will run a race together, with you on Motorcycle of course and the map will be on Roll20. As your pokemon takes damage, it will be more and more difficult for you to remain mounted, and if you wipe out, the race is over! Some matches will be pokemon battles as you run the race, others will be full contact thunder dome, two men enter one man leaves, brutal biking battles. And who knows what else you'll run into on the highways and byways of Kanto? Additionally, as you and your pokemon battle, we will be tracking the Appeal you generate during a race. This will determine how much the public likes you and your team, and will determine how much money you get after a race. It's all about the ratings in show biz, baby! Hit it big enough with appeal, and you might have a breakout match, go viral, and become super stars!
Link to Homebrew: forums.pokemontabletop.com/topic/10331823/1/#new
There is a limit on what pokemon can participate in a race, however. They need to be able to keep up with the racers, so it will become a practical limitation as well, especially as things get faster, but first and foremost, your pokemon must have a movement capability of at least 6. There are ways to increase this to get your favorite mon in, there will be Racing Gear, a homebrew item for pokemon, that will increase their overland similar to Running Shoes, as well as personal trainers that could work on speeding them up.
Alright, so now that we've got that out of the way, let's talk about those roles I mentioned. Very loosely, there are some 'roles' that need to be filled within the group dynamic. Those roles are basically this.
Rider(s) - Rides the bike and does the battling during the races. We may allow a MAX of 2 on the team, but that's a big maybe.
Techie - Someone's got to keep the bike going, work on upgrades, and fix their bike when the Rider goes and trashes it. They will also monitor the bike during the races for any problems, serve as the pit crew, and so forth.
Promoter/Manager - Someone's got to drum up crowds and get people hyped! That's your job...and to make sure the Rider actually shows up for the race...lazy bum. =P
Groupie/Other - Think we missed something? Want to be a personal trainer or a medic? Tell us about it! Write up a character, we won't dismiss anyone out of hand. Promise!
I want to take this chance to point out, there WILL be opportunities for more traditional pokemon battles outside of racing, so the Promoter/Techie/and others will all have a chance to use their pokemon. Also, while the Rider may be the only person actively 'fighting' in the exhibition battles, that does not mean that the others will be sitting idly by on the sidelines! You will all be taking part in one way or another. We don't want anybody to feel left out, not even a little!
So let's talk starting levels, funds, and what we need with your application.
First of all, we're going to be using the Core book, as well as some features out of DPDOM. We're in the 'near future' category, so obviously mechanical pokebots, Jailbreaker, and things involving vehicles are all allowed. Cybernetics are also allowed, but they are loud, noisy, obviously mechanical, and typically originate as medical prosthetics. Yes, that means you traumatically lose the limb before you got this one, and we want to know how‼ We would like to avoid supernatural classes, but if you've got a really good reason why you should have supernatural powers, let us know and we'll hear you out!
Beyond that, Trainer Level 5, one level 15 Pokemon, one level 10 Pokemon. If your pokemon can evolve at those levels or sooner, it may be evolved. Each player will get 5000 starting cash. The group will automatically have one non-upgraded Personal Size Open Vehicle, the Bike, and one Large Group Vehicle, the Van. The van can hold all of your tools and is certainly big enough to carry the bike from city to city, race to race. We would also like an RP sample, so we can get a feel for your style and try to pick a strong group with good chemistry.
I think that about covers it! If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, then feel free to ask away!
Oh, one last point! The recruitment thread for this game is up here, and on the new Pokemon Tabletop Forums boards. You don't need to post in both to be counted. Once we've got our players lined up, that's when we'll make a final decision on which boards we'll use to host the game. It will be up to you, the players, to decide where we host it!
EDIT: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Both the May and Sept playtests will be in effect.
1)Mixed Power: Both stats have to remain within +-5 stat points of each other, or the ability turns off.
2)Taskmaster Injuries: Yes, they will count against your DC to remain mounted. Further changes to balance this are under review.
3)Mounted Prowess: Yes, this bonus applies to your bike!
4)Inheritance Moves: Sure! Everybody gets a level 10 inheritance move! =P
5)Some lower-speed starters: Yeah, we can make Racing Gear for Pokemon available as a start item.
Racing Gear: Considering just how different and varied pokemon are, their Racing Gear is too! In general, it will include Knee/Elbow/Joint pads, some manner of footwear/paw-wear, and a helmet, typically with a visor or goggles. This is a held item for Pokemon only and it increases their Athletics by +2 and their Overland speed by +1. Cost $1500.
6)Pokemon Skill Backgrounds: I'm gonna have to go with a no on this one.
7)Upgrader: Yeah, we'll allow Upgraders, but within this setting it only really makes sense for people to 'tinker' with their cybernetics, and thus be upgraders, after getting a prosthetic. The more traditional scientists/researchers would probably be working in a lab on developing them. Hope that answers your question. =P
8)Limits on Starters: Underdogs. If the level 15 one is not an Underdog, but its base form is, then that's fine. And we'd like to try and keep away from single-stage, no evolution pokemon right out the gate. Also, a Racer MUST have at least ONE pokemon that can race.
9)Recoil: Recoil will trigget a check to remain mounted.
10)Skill Stunts: No, you cannot take a Skill Stunt to remain mounted.
11)Mega Evolution: Yes, we will eventually feature Mega Evolution.
12)Wonder Launcher: Yes, you can use these, either incorporated into the bike by the Techie for the rider to use, or wielded on the sideline. Keep in mind, however, that you will need to be in range of your targets, and the race courses are quite long. =P
13)Taskmasters & Injuries: For the purposes of checks to remain mounted, Taskmasters will ignore 1 injury on their pokemon for every feature they have invested in the class, excluding the initial 'Taskmaster' feature, up to a maximum of 5 injuries being ignored. We feel like that should strike the right balance between allowing them to utilize the injury system and keeping them viable as a battle class, without making the checks too trivial.
14)Non-Kanto Native Pokemon: Yes, they will be obtainable.
Submissions are listed in the spoiler below! =P
