It's cool and dark, the first time you wake up, and the lush grass pillowed beneath you is soft and slightly damp. At your side, a strange animal wakes as you do, and stares at you with far more intelligence and awareness than most would expect. No more than a few inches from you rests a darkly colored hard cover book with a circle of six embedded gemstones as its only design. Around you, you can make out trees, though you seem to find yourself in a grassy clearing at the moment. And above you, illuminating a sky of velvet blue with soft hints of dawn peaking around the edges, is a sea of stars in unrecognizable patterns and three great moons that cast a glow onto your face.
That's likely your first sign, as you blink away the webs of unconsciousness, that you might not be in Kansas anymore...
Premise: You are a character from any non-pokemon media source who has, inexplicably, found yourself in a strange world inhabited by Pokemon. You left your own universe somewhere in the middle of, or possibly even before, your own journey. You arrived with nothing more than the clothing on your back, a dark book full of nothing but blank pages, and items that would have been on your character upon exiting your world, less any major items that were incredibly important to your plot. What's more, you don't feel quite /right/ anymore. Your powers, if you had them, have changed. They may have become more limited, taken different forms, or vanished completely for unknown reasons. Your body also feels slightly off, and you're quick to find out that whatever happened, you have been granted some measure of healing abilities--minor pains vanish in mere hours, and even agonizing injuries in days. Somewhere visible on your body, you've also gained a mark of some kind, like a glimmering, warm tattoo. You don't know why, but you're sure it has something to do with your new companion, a creature you know is called a Pokemon though you're unsure where that knowledge came from. It appeared in this place when you did, and seems unwilling to leave your side.
So far, you haven't explored much from your starting location, which seems to be somewhere in the middle of a forested area. You've seen several wild pokemon in the time you've been here, but any potential problems have been warded off by the presence of your companion. But it's been several days and you haven't woken up from this strange dream, and you've decided it's time to try and find out what's out there.
It's up to you to survive this world. Explore a new land, survive the dangers within, recruit a team of companion pokemon to help you, and figure out the mystery to your presence on this strange island. Find others who, like you, have no idea how they arrived here. Build your own shelter, design settlements, make alliances. And at the end of everything, if you're lucky, find your way home and decide if you're ready to go.
Game Details, Quick Summary, and Expectations:
- This is a PBP game that will be played here on the forums. Interested players will be required to join a Skype Group, and accepted players will be accepted to remain in a Skype OOC chat. In addition, Roll20 may be utilized for combat maps and accepted players are expected to have or make an account on the site.
- Posting Requirements: Accepted players are expected to post once every two days at minimum. Exceptions will be made for unusual situations, holidays, etc. Chronic difficulties meeting this requirement will result in a player's expulsion and replacement.
- Player Requirements: I am looking for 4-6 interested players, to be determined by the application quality and quantity, for this game.
- Advertisement Life: This game advertisement may be considered Live and accepting applications as of New Year's Day (January 1, 2016). Until that date, sneak peeking individuals /may/ ask questions regarding the game's rules, media, etc, and I will update the FAQ, but I will not accept any application offered to me. Applications will close on January 8, 2016, at 11:59pm. I will attempt to release the list of accepted players within 24 hours of this closing time.
- There are several elements you should expect from this game, including but not limited to: Crossover Characters and NPCs, Puzzles and mystery, Sandbox and exploration, and Resource management aspects and crafting.
- To explain more about the resource aspect: Players will have options to collect scrap and unique resources and turn those into shelters, settlements, furniture, weapons, armor, etc. Alchemy will be allowed and encouraged in several portions of the game. Warning: one gathering option includes the use of Coup De Grace on defeated pokemon to harvest food and materials from them. Keep this in mind when deciding if this is a game for you.
- Adult themes may arise, due to the resource management aspects and the fact that some crossover medias may have more adult themes than others. Sexually or violently explicit roleplay, however, is expected to utilize the fade to black method. If you want to roleplay Donna Noble and Bruce Wayne getting it on, I'm not judging you--but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that you take the details elsewhere, please.
- There absolutely will be unusual pokemon not seen before in the canon pokemon world. This may range from rare pokemon of unique types (glass type from the book, for instance), type shifted versions of existing pokemon, shiny versions of existing pokemon, glitch pokemon, homebrew fakemon, etc. Details of these will honestly vary by what I think is fun to throw out in a given situation.
- In addition, there will also be unusual and not seen before items, weapons, abilities, etc. Don't take your knowledge of pokemon for granted!
- In regards for what I expect from you: be creative, be interesting, and make this game as fun for me to run and read as I will try to make it for you! There are no post length requirements, though I may ask you to include more if your posts aren't giving me enough to work with. Type in a way that your posts are understandable, so I don't have to spend time just trying to figure out what you're asking.
- Expect to play in both solo and group situations. You'll be starting the game as a solo character until you find people to team up with, but there are also plenty of situations in which you'll be required to work in a group if you want to be successful. In addition, developing settlements will likely work better in a group, and /developed/ settlements are almost sure to attract new NPCs to work and trade with!
Character Selection Requirements:
- Submitted characters are required to belong to a non-pokemon media source. This includes but is not limited to: video games, books, television, movies, etc. Ideally, this media source is one that I recognize enough that I can use it in plotting, but particularly interesting or well done characters may be accepted regardless.
- As a sub section of the above requirement, I /will/ consider OC characters that are obviously from an established media source but aren't a canon characters. I will likely only accept a single character of this sort, however, into the actual game (two at most if they /really/ blow me away), so keep that in mind if you want to apply and are considering what to apply with.
- Submitted characters must be humanoid. They do not have to be explicitly human, but they should be something close. My rule of thumb for if something is human enough is whether or not that character could reasonably breed with a human without ruining suspension of disbelief. Okay: angels, demons, humans, alien species that look like humans, characters that look human but with extra parts, etc. Not Okay: magical skeletons, non-human animals, etc. Considering a popular example: Frisk would be okay, Sans would not be okay, and Toriel would be borderline and depend on the application..
- As a sub section of the above requirement: non-human characters, such as the previous example of Sans, /may/ be submitted assuming an alternate form. An application of this nature, however, requires that the character in question is aware of their true form and aware that the form they're currently in /isn't/ it.
Character Crunch:
- TL 3
- $5000 to spend on items your character may have been holding when they appeared or have found in a forested area in the past three days since appearing. Leftover funds become your choice of food or building scrap.
- Upgrades /may/ be "purchased" with starting funds. However, pokemon-specific items (see: pokeballs) shouldn't be taken unless you can explain why your character would have such a thing despite being from a different world.
- Single Starter - Must be Underdog, Non-Pseudo, Non-Legendary. Your starter is literally your character's soul given a form for their protection--it should somehow represent your character's personality.
- Your starter should be level 10. You may select one free egg or inheritance move according to the tutor rules. If your chosen starter does not have an egg move list, you may select from the tutor move list. Skill backgrounds are acceptable. Unique colorations of your starter are also acceptable, if you'd like to personalize their appearances, though additional limbs or the like are not.
- The Wynaut, and Wailmer lines are banned. The Wired capability and its associated mons are banned as starters.
- Core, GoT, DPDOM, and existing playtest books will be allowed with the following bans: Warper, Telepath, Aura Guardian, Engineer, Upgrader, Channeler, PokeManiac, and Type Shift. There is a soft ban on Rune Master, but let's talk. The Twisted Power addition is allowed only on List B found here. Crafting features for pokemon-specific items are only acceptable if you have a good explanation for /why/ your character would have such things.
- Based on setting, YMMV with the following classes: technology based classes in early game (low tech setting until/unless you fix that), Cap Spec, Coordinator and Style Experts, etc.
Application Requirements and FAQ:
Please submit applications using an automatic sheet, such as the Fancy Sheet listed in our quick links. DO NOT PUT YOUR USERNAME ON THIS SHEET. I'll be doing my initial read through while attempting to limit any potential bias I may have in regards to applicants, and for my existing method of that to work, I can't have usernames visible! (If you see someone has missed this rule, in fact, please remind them!)
I'm looking for /interesting/ characters, not characters selected and built for the sake of being as game breaking as possible. Self-proclaimed munchkins, I'd request that you tone it down and go for roleplay more than rollplay, please. x3 Explosion aces will sacrificed to Arceus.
You may not call dibs on a character. Any interested individual can apply with any character they want to. If I end up with six different versions of Hermione Granger, well, that just means that all six of those applications are mutually exclusive and you may have lowered the chances of that application being accepted. That being said, I will be selecting the final characters based on what I think will be an interesting range of characters, the quality of the individual characters, etc. Creativity will probably be rewarded!
With your submission, please include a short explanation of your build choice and a link to a good source of information about your character. I want to know why, say, your Hermione Granger application might include chronicler, or why your Snow White application might include musician.
You may submit multiple applications if you can't decide which character you want to submit and want to offer up several options. You aren't, by any means, /required/ to do so. The amount of applications you submit won't affect how I feel about individual applications. If you have limited time and effort, I'd rather see one really good application as opposed to six mediocre ones.
You aren't required to fill out any information in regards to background, personality, or appearance, so long as you provide a good link to information and a suitable picture. You /are/ required to include where your starter's mark is and what form it takes, however. If you're submitting an application for a character with an altered appearance, such as a human form Papyrus, or for a fanon OC, you are still required to fill out these sections. In addition, I'd like to see a dream/goal/etc or two that relates to your character's current situation. Is Hermione Granger desperate to get home or is she more interested in studying this new world and it's strange inhabitants? Is your Daenerys furious and fighting to figure things out and get home to her husband, or is she content to avoid her brother's plans to marry her off to a horse lord and interested in building a new home in this strange world?
When submitting an application please clarify if you want feedback. I will happily offer the feedback that I, and anyone who helps me look, has in regards to characters. This will probably include any comments, questions, or concerns we had with a given character and its build. If you don't want that feedback, I will not force it on you. There's no shame in not wanting your character torn apart, and your choice to request that feedback or not will not affect your chances of getting in.
You can ask questions about the game, setting, or media sources that I am familiar with. I will tell you if I have not seen a particular anime, for instance, or if I've never actually played a video game but feel that I'm still comfortable enough with it due to pop culture that a character from it would be acceptable. I will tell you if I think a given character isn't appropriate for the game, isn't human enough, etc. I will also listen to requests for exceptions to existing crunch rules. I don't remotely promise to allow those exceptions, but if you feel that your character has a really, /really/ good reason why I should allow additional funds or a currently banned class or, hell, a blessing from B+D, I'm willing to listen and may be willing to come to a compromise with you, such as allowing the additional funds with or without disallowing your daily search for a day or two, allowing your use of the class with some additional requirements or restrictions we can talk out, or allowing a blessing in exchange for a feature or edge slot, etc. No question is a stupid question, and I'll post any questions and their answers in this spot as they come up.
How will Pokeballs be handled?
Pokeballs will be fluffed as binding scrolls in this game. Pokemon in your team will be represented as tattoos on your skin that you can summon a pokemon from or into as desired by touching it. Pokemon that would be considered in your 'PC' will instead be found in the book you found when your woke up, a book which seems to somehow refuse any attempts to be stolen or thrown away--it always reappears somewhere near you, until you eventually pick it back up. Switching pokemon from the book to your skin involves an extended action ritual at specified ritual locations, similar to how you'd normally have to find a pokemon center with a PC. Scrolls aren't incredibly common, and neither is the scrap required by those few with the knowledge to craft them. As a side note, you get the choice of where the tattoos form on your character, and what shape they take. They can be an actual image of the pokemon, a symbol of some sort, or anything else that works for you.
How will pokemon be controlled?
Players will generally control their own pokemon, with every capture including a small note of any quirks or traits that are relevant. Pokemon captured at loyalty 0-1 are exceptions to this rule, and only become player controlled after they've gone up to 2+ in loyalty.
How intelligent are pokemon?
Pokemon on this island have varying intelligences by species and individual mon. Some species may have intelligence and awareness that are human level or above, some species will probably be normal animal level intelligence, and you'll occasionally find exceptions to that rule in any species. Your starters, for instance, seem to have human level intelligence or close to it, regardless of the usual intelligence of the others of their species, due to their connection to you.
