Sandshrew is forced to give up its momentum for defense. (Quick Curl Ability: Std action interrupt for +10 DR for 1 round)
It's still not enough to handle both attacks, however, and Sandshrew goes down.
Nekura sends out a Gible next. On the far side of Tropius, so as to try to keep away from Mayu's ice-type attacks.
Gible - 6
Nekura thrusts her staff at Mayu again, hoping to drive her back and away from Gible.

Lambda weathers the attack well enough, and responds with another flurry of leaves... but she cannot, in the end, weather the weather. Mayu sends out Epsilon in her place and lashes out with what is likely a final blast of ice.

Gible is not pleased with all the attacks, but is quite glad when the giant dinosuar thing goes away and it gulps down a Sitrus Berry. Of course, then the water-spraying fish comes out and hoses it down. Welp, best get to nomming! Well, tackling at least.

Both of Mayu's Pokemon manage to avoid their enemies, this time around. Unfortunately, the sandstorm continues to take a toll on them. They keep going, although in Mayu's estimation this battle is almost certainly a loss - Nekura still has a Pokemon in reserve.

Alpha catches the staff in his hands and twists, trying to send the force of the blow rebounding on Nekura. Even so, the hit clearly takes a lot out of him, and he slumps over in the sand afterwards. Beta, meanwhile, keeps on truckin'.

Nekura is removed from the fight right alongside Alpha. Rhyhorn definitely feels that bite, but is still in the game for awhile longer. It shoves its horn at Beta again.

This time, Beta can neither dodge nor endure the attack. Mayu recalls him. "That is four. Match."

Within the (non-dungeon) Viridian Forest, Mayu spots a Chespin collecting berries.

Chespin. Not a particularly noteworthy Pokemon, on its own; however, the evolved form is known to be quite powerful. Not what Mayu is looking for to defeat the Gym, maybe, but no sense overlooking an opportunity. She sends Alpha out to start the fight, and...
... hesitates. The Chespin has noticed her, and is eyeing her warily. Well, fine. The fact that it hasn't run away or attacked already bodes well for its temperament. It must know there's only one reason a trainer would take notice of a wild Pokemon. She turns to Alpha, and... and...
"I am considering whether you would make a worthwhile addition to my team," she says to the Grass Pokemon, not sure why she's bothering even as she speaks.

Mayu's not sure what she expected. "I suppose there is little I can conclude without testing you."
Alpha's ears perk up a little. Is that a command to attack? Usually his mistress is very clear about that sort of thing. He doesn't know what to make of this 'talking to the enemy' thing.

Chespin doesn't really feel much like fighting, so it takes off while the getting's good.

This is... fine. Yes. She wouldn't want a Pokemon who isn't interested in fighting anyway.
Onward to Pallet.
