Ah, Johto. A wonderful, rural countryside teeming with signs of nature in its purest form. In the thirty years since Legendary Trainers Red and Blue swept through the Kanto Gym Circuit and its League, a lot has changed. Not only did both boys complete their journeys through their home region in record-shattering time (a mere three months!), Trainer Blue also went on to become the Gym Leader of Viridian City and even participated in various tournaments throughout the many regions of our world. Truly a gifted trainer if ever there was one.
Let us not forget, though, the equally impressive trainers that came from Johto not two years later! Gold and Kristal! While both started out amazingly, 'twas only young Gold that continued along the same path he started on. Miss Kristal returned to New Bark Town at some point in her journey and became an invaluable assistant to Professor Elm while Gold went on to challenge and defeat the re-shuffled Pokemon League consisting of Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Champion Lance. Despite defeating our esteemed Former Champion, Gold did not seem to desire the title; declining it publicly. This is why, despite the massive amount of respect we have for him, that some claim he is not quite as 'unbeatable' as the tabloids would have us believe. If anything, there is only one truly undefeated Trainer in the greater Tohjo region, it would be Red of Pallet Town. Not that anyone has seen him since he departed for Mt. Silver...but anyways! On to more pleasant subjects!
You're here for your first Pokemon, right? Of course, of course. I-
"Professor!" A blue-haired woman calls out, causing the youngest regional professor to turn. "You're forgetting things again!" Kristal, Elm's personal assistant, walks over and places a hand on his shoulder, smiling softly as she shakes her head. "Silly. I know you're excited to get the new kids their Pokemon and out into the world, but there's a few more things we need to cover about history first. Remember?"
Elm scratches the back of his head sheepishly. "Ha ha, woops! You're right, of course. Yes, there are indeed a few more things we need to cover." He agrees, much to the chagrin of the younger newbie Trainers.
Now then, first things first: while Kanto and Johto are the most closely connected regions in the world (physically speaking) due to the backlash against Kanto Champion Lilith's new laws regarding Pokemon Training and Ownership (among other things), Johto elected to break away from Kanto. To become more independent, as it was before the Kan-Joh Treaty of 1088. I won't bore you with a lecture on the inner workings of the treaty, but suffice to say it was one of the primary reasons that Johto and Kanto shared a Pokemon League. The older generations living in Johto do not like how Champion Lilith runs things these days, so we nullified the Alliance. Now, while we do struggle just a little bit in certain areas (nothing you kids need to worry yourselves over), we retain our traditions and our original Gym Circuit. To us Johtonians, going on a Pokemon Journey is akin to a right of passage. A spiritual enlightenment, if you will. Not...whatever it's become to Kanto. A sign of prestige? All about the competition and becoming the ruler of the nation-state? I don't really know.
"Elm!" Kristal shouts suddenly, startling the poor professor who had somehow forgotten she was standing right next to him. "Rambling! Summarize, please. We don't have all day."
"R-right! Yes, of course!" Elm stutters as Kristal laughs softly at his antics. Elm clears his throat before continuing.
Er-hem. Yes. Summarize...
In summary, that is, the things you most need to know about our lovely region are as follows:
- The beginning age for a Pokemon Trainer is 10 years old. Like it has always been.
- Everyone who wishes to embark on an official Pokemon journey (especially if you wish to participate in the Silver Conference) must check in with the regional professor (that's me) before departing.
- As the regional professor, I am authorized to grant everyone a single starter Pokemon, as well as a top-of-the-line Pokedex and five Poke Balls.
- Trainers who have registered to participate in the Silver Conference (our regional Pokemon League) must acquire at least eight Badges. Ostensibly, these should be the 'traditional' eight from Violet City, Goldenrod City, and the like, but truthfully as long as you have eight, we don't stress the details overmuch.
- Trainers who make it to at least the Top 8 in the Silver Conference Tournament will have earned the right to enter Mt. Silver itself, but only the winner of this tournament may go on to face the Elite Four.
- Oh, yes! On starters: Normally I'd only be allowed to hand out the traditional fire/water/grass starters for our region, but with them having breeding populations in the wild now, they're far less special than they were. As such, you may have put in a request for just about any Pokemon you can think of. If you have done so, then I have them here with me now...er...somewhere. (Kristal giggles again, causing Elm to flush and tug at his lab coat's collar.)
"S-so, yes! That's about the gist of it. First things first, let's get those of you who've previously sent in requests for a specific Pokemon up here to claim them so you can get started on your journeys. When I call your name, please come up here and Kristal will give you your Pokemon. A-after confirming your identity of course! Heh-heh. Standard Procedure, y'know?" (Kristal rolls her eyes.)
