Steelix stays right on your heels, but never gets close enough to actually harm you directly. Instead, it just "encourages" you to high-tail it to the exit. Once on the other side, you meet the Gym Leader: Nekura Massani. She confirms that you still desire the 'advanced' challenge before taking you to the arena.
Nekura will typically use two Pokemon in an Advanced Challenge, with only one being out at a time. The Challenger may request the Leader uses additional Pokemon for a tougher challenge, but for a First Badge, Nekura goes no higher than 4.
