Heading back to Cole, the pair find him finishing up making dinner, the heat from the portable stove wanly helping to warm the chill air. The Fire Trainer looks up as they approach. "Hey guys, find anything good?" he asks, before frowning a little. "So... I've been thinking on this some. And... all these changes that have happened to me, all this fire... I just, I need to take some time to myself, once we're out of this place. Just to figure out what's going on, to control it better. Because I'm scared that one day I'll just lose control, and just burn down everything that I care about."

"Dont fret none about it Cole, a man can only follow his heart and do what's right, even if that's walk-in' a lonely road. Or dancin with Pokemon." Theodore side-eyed Kai with a smile. "Whatever leaves you feeling most happy and safe, we'll get you where you need to be."

"Yeah, it's no trouble. You do what you gotta man." Kai let out a sigh of relief in his head. He wasn't... thrilled he was leaving, but it certainly took some weight off his chest. He was trying to be better, but if he didn't have to do it, well, it was certainly easier to cope that way.
"That said, y'know where your gonna go? I mean I guess the volcano probably works wonders, don't gotta worry about burning up there much!"

"Not sure yet," Cole says. "I guess that's just a part of finding things out."
The rest of the evening and the night pass uneventfully, and the morning is heralded by the chill quickly seeping away under the bright light of the sun. It's probably going to get back to uncomfortable very fast.
It's at this point the group has to decide whether they feel that their teams are healthy enough to press on towards the tower of possible treasure, or turn back.

Rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Theodore tended his Pokemon in the morning, Lucille requiring outside help, and Ranger just a bit of instruction. Training held in the rising sun out on the sand with his posse. Ready and raring to get out of the (previously) haunted cave, Theodore wakes the others.
"Alright fellers, let's ride! There's a temple awaitin!"

Training all done, the group heads out deeper into the desert. While the sand once more makes things difficult to traverse, it's still not in the hottest part of the day, so the trio's able to make good time.
Entering the enclosed part of the desert... it appears very forlorn, and empty. Only a rocky plateau-mesa-thing off in the distance really gives any definition to the sands. So... that is what the group heads towards. After a little bit, though, as the sun rises higher, a shimmering tower appears off to the east. It's indistinct, reaching high up into the sky and fading out... but it seems like it's what they might be looking for.
Getting closer, it seems to be composed of bricks of sand, constantly shedding trickles of material from between cracks, as though it had just risen. There doesn't seem to be anything around, but there is the vague feeling of being watched out of the shimmering in the air.

"Kinda like one of them mee-rajes you hear about." Theodore whistled at the impressive structure. If that was a hallucination, it sure as shootin was a doozy of one. The sensation of being watched put him off just a tick, after the Fossil Maniac's house, and then the cave, his dislike of ghosts was starting to overtake his dislike of birds. Still, they'd made a several day journey of it, and he wasn't about to start backing down now. "Well, let's go explorin' ah spose."
With Ranger spinning along through the air beside him, Theodore started the last leg of the journey towards the tower.

"I mean, mirages are easy to check right? Just gotta see if you can touch them, I think?" Kai had absolutely no clue what he was talking about, since all his 'mirage' experience comes from shows on TV and nothing else.
He was also silently hoping whatever they ran into here wasn't too hard to deal with. His team wasn't in the best shape, but they weren't horrible either. He'd just like to make sure they get to the next Pokemon Center not too banged up that they need multiple days of care. He followed beside Theo, glancing at the structure and wondering how high it actually went.

Continuing forwards, the group suddenly finds themselves surrounded by a series of strange, screeching, wavering noises as a trio of weird birdlike rainbow-ish things suddenly become visible. With what might be either one or three eyes, wings that don't look like they should be able to fly, and one leg that splits into two pairs of talons, they are... very very strange looking.
And it feels like they are rather upset at the group trying to approach the tower.

Kai was wanting to try and be diplomatic, but it looked like they were mad simply about approaching in general. He really wanted to explore the place so... "Looks like they're just asking for trouble, let's show'em what we can do guys!" Besides they looked like birds, Theo would probably be in if Cole wasn't. Kai grabbed his new Marowak's ball and sent out the mon to it's first real battle. "Let's see what you can do Puraha!"Initiatives Kai 13 A. Marowak 6

Ranger is able to get a good shot off at the first guardian bird, but it flaps its wings and seems to move even faster in the sudden wind that whips up, as do its compatriots. The second bird glows, before shields begin to emanate around the three of them, while the third one emanates a psychic beam that strikes Kai's newest Pokémon straight in the head, going straight through its skull mask and dazing the 'mon. Bird 1 is hit by Bubble Beam. Bird 1 uses Tailwind. Bird 2 uses Light Screen. Marowak takes 33 damage from Psybeam, and is Confused. A critical hit Map

"Kai you ever get the impression we are just drawn to the weird of the universe? Magic rocks, people developing special powers, extremely haunted caves and houses. Now... Alien birds? Ranger, give it another Bubble Beam."
The Starmie misses the alien as it moves surprisingly fast with a tailwind. Theodore retrieved his Pokedex and scans one of the Oddities.

The bird dodges out of the way of Ranger, but falters as it's hit by the flaming attack and flames sprout up around its body. It remains flying, though - if only barely - and the flames seem to simply hover over the creatures body, not actually touching it. "Sigilyph," reads out Theo's Dex, "the Avianoid Pokémon. The guardians of an ancient city, they use their psychic power to attack enemies that invade their territory."Said psychic powers can also be used for defense, apparently, as the one that has been continually beaten and battered puts up another layer of shielding around the three avians. Thankfully, their psychic and wind-oriented assault isn't quite as effective. Ranger's able to ride the breeze, while Puraha jumps out of the way as the sand where they were is blasted. Sigilyph 1 takes an injury from Flame Wheel, and is Burned. Sigilyph 1 uses Reflect. S2 misses Starmie with Gust. S3 misses Marowak with Psybeam.

"Alright Ranger, Brine." Once again the burst of water cannot keep up with the speed the featherless birds were managing. Theodore squinted after his target. Ranger typically didn't struggle to such a degree to hit anything, this was unheard of. Theodore tried a Pokeball. g2N7HUQ71d20
No, it seemed pretty consistent.

"The weirdest things do seem to be attracted to us, especially ghosts... at least they aren't ghosts?" Kai certainly hoped they weren't, though the typing would still be good for the plan... The central bird plummets to the ground, the flames on its body flaring up, just burning through all the shields it has. The other two birds ignore the loss of their companion, it seems, and merely fly in a synchronized pattern to swap their targets, with the first remaining one firing off a more accurate beam at Puraha, while the second... still missing the swift form of Lone Ranger. IT's very much a stalemate standoff there. S1 takes, like, 4 injuries, and Faints. Marowak takes 29 damage from Psybeam. Gust misses.

Kai let's Puraha make it's own decision for a round, reaching into his pocket and grabbing a basic ball as he watches the Marowak. Said Marowak span it's bone around, before running up to the bird on the right of it, spectral flames coming around the bone as he slapped it up at the flying bird, unable to find purchase on on it. Kai winces at the miss, but also at the brutal hit that the Star seemed to deliver, deciding that was probably the sign to go for it, he gripped the ball and let it soar... right past the bird.
