Matilda nods, understanding Brooke's intent. "Believe me, Miss, I understand what you mean. Many nobles here in the city, especially those in the upper echelons of society, consider themselves to be above us commoners. Servants like myself may be treating with grudging respect for the duties we perform, but it is far more common that we are looked down upon as one looks down upon the dirt on one's shoes." She glances down at Brooke's bare feet briefly, but makes no comment on them. "Among both scholars and fighters, many of them have specific ways you can request to meet with/battle them. For example, the Lady Dracul has a public form that one can fill out to challenge her at a specific time and date (though one must always come to her) whenever she is in the city. She often travels, however, so it's possible you could bump into her at random and be challenged if she is bored enough. It sounds rude, I know, and it is, but her family is among the wealthiest in the land, so she has that prerogative."

Brooke relaxes a bit at the maid's understanding. Seems it's more of a rich folk versus poor thing than city folk versus country folk... or at least, there's enough of both going on that Matilda can sympathize. "That's good t'know, thanks. I wasn't figuring I'd be here long enough to make any appointments, but maybe I'll try an' stick around long enough to see a scholar before I go. Already tried askin' around the Guild in Saffron, they didn't have a clue either."

The next morning, Brooke heads out into the city to see if she can find any of the Pokemon scholars and collectors Matilda mentioned to her the day before - and if so, whether they're up for visitors.

Brooke learns, through talking with other working-class people, of a man named 'Doctor Calthor' that is looking for anything strange and unusual, and paying well for the information. He doesn't seem to be terribly specific on what qualifies as 'strange and unusual', but surely that weird, goopy Pokemon everyone met in the swamp counts.

Well, it's worth a shot, at least. Worst that can happen is the fellow slams the door in her face, right? Brooke asks where the doctor might be found, and heads thataway.

Brooke finds the man's research lab/home easily enough. There is no response to a knock at the door, but Brooke hears rustling or some sort of sounds from within, so somebody is home. This doctor fellow is also well-known for being practically married to his work, and does it all by himself, so likely he's caught up in some research project or another and not paying attention to the outside world.

Brooke bangs on the door again, harder this time. If this fella's home but doesn't want to answer his door... well, she's got no right to make him. If he just can't hear her, on the other hand, she can do loud.

There is a faint crackling sound after Brooke bangs a little harder, and the image of a man in his 30s appears before the door.
"What is this disturbance?!" The image exclaims, before realizing Brooke is obviously not from around here. "Oh, a visitor. My apologies, young lady. How can I help you?" He seems much calmer after the initial outburst.

Brooke startles at the sudden appearance. Magic. A week of hanging out with Leon and Yue still hasn't gotten her used to that. "Uh, sorry 'bout the noise. I heard you're a scholar, was hopin' you could take a look at a Pokemon I caught? The Poketome hasn't got an entry, and nobody at the Adventurer's Guild in Saffron had any idea either."

The door opens by itself. "Very well. Bring it inside and I shall take a look." Once inside, the door closes again on its own.

Well. That's certainly a thing. Apparently, 'scholar' in Celadon City also means 'psychic', or maybe 'magician'. "Fair warning," she says, looking around for the doctor, "it'll get slime all over your floor if I let it out here. You got anyplace you don't mind making a bit of a mess?"

The man Brooke saw in the image walks out from another room. "Oh? This way then. I have a room that I designed specifically to study the more messy or dangerous Pokemon in our world." He leads Brooke to a metal-lined chamber with an attached observation room. He presses some buttons on a console and the 'testing chamber' door opens up. "Alright then. Let's see what you've got."

Brooke releases Quiver obligingly. "Say hi, Quiver. It's okay, you don't have to fight anyone. This fella just wants to get a look at you."

Doctor Calthor hmms at Quiver as he kneels down in front of it. Wearing gloves, he gently pokes and prods the little slime for a bit before ushering Brooke out of the test room with him. He presses a different button and the chamber door closes.
"The best way to determine a Pokemon's Type is to expose it to varying types of energy. Before I begin, however, I want you to share any observations you may have made while using it in battle. What sort of attacks did it use? Did it seem particularly resilient against any particular opponents?"

Brooke chews her lip, trying to remember. "Well, let's see. She likes to blow bubbles, and sometimes she'll drain energy from things too; I guess that's Water and Grass? The folks at the Guild thought she might be a Water-type, but I don't think so, 'cause my Treecko takes an awful long time to wear her down when they spar. And as far as I can tell, she just plain don't notice Water-type attacks. That's all I can think of, but I haven't put her in a lot of real fights, t'be honest - she gets scared easy. She's a tough little thing, but her attacks don't have much stopping power, so mostly she just gets beaten down or ignored..."
She stops, realizing she's drifting off topic. "Anyhow. Water an' Grass. Can you make anything of that, doc?"

"Hm. Dual Water and Grass type Pokemon do exist, but the only one I know of is the Lotad family, which this clearly is not." He presses some buttons and a wall panel in the testing chamber opens up. It begins to exude a mist of some sort. Quiver at first is curious about it, then makes a little warbling sound as it quickly moves away.
"Averse to ice-type energy. Intriguing. That narrows us down to Flying, Grass, Dragon, and Ground. It's clearly not a water type, as they don't mind Ice-type energy. You said it is immune to water, so that removes both Flying and Ground, barring some special ability."

"Well, what is immune to water, then?" Brooke asks, following along as best she can. "Seems to me we should start with those. I know Grass-types ain't. Can't say I know much about dragons, but..." she looks dubiously at the little slime. "She doesn't seem very dragony."

"Nothing is outright immune to Water-Type energy by default. Therefore, it must have some sort of special ability. Does it seem to power up from Water-Type attacks, or just sort of 'absorb' them? Does it seem to restore its health when taking in Water-Type energy? These may seem like minor distinctions to you, but they're all quite different effects for quite different Pokemon."

"Uh..." Brooke frowns. "I never noticed her powering up. I never really noticed her healing, either, but... she loves water. If there's a puddle anywhere around, she'll be in it. She loves my Corphish, on account of the bubblebeams. If I had to guess, I'd say she heals?"

"Hm. It's skin seems slimy, not unlike a Wooper's, so I'd say that is probably what we've classified as the 'Dry Skin' special ability. It heals when struck by water, but it dries out in sunlight. Am I correct in guessing you found it in a marsh or a swamp?" When Brooke acknowledges this, stating she found Quiver in the Lavender Swamp, Doctor Calthor hmms again. After much testing, he finally determines that it's a akin to a sea slug. However, its resistance to electric-based attacks, grass attacks, and a number of other things, including fire, means that it must be a Dragon-Type; strange though it may be. When he gets it to 'speak' its name, like all Pokemon do to some extent, it says 'gooommmyyy'. So it's species name must be 'Goomy' and it is a Dragon Type. A pure dragon type, at that. Which is extraordinarily rare.
"Young lady, you may have just helped me to discover a brand new species of Pokemon that we were unaware of. Do you realize what this means for the scientific community?"
