At Baraz's prompting, the little gear Pokemon...simply remains motionless. It's two eyes do not open; it doesn't seem to react to the human at all. Upon inspection, Baraz realises all of the Pokemon seem to be in some kind of dormant state. They aren't ignoring him, they are actually unable to notice him. In this state, he would have no problem capturing one, but if he is unable to wake it, it won't be much help to anyone.

"Hmmmm..."
Well, this was interesting. Baraz knew Pokemon would enter such states under certain conditions, he'd need to look for a way to awaken them. If this place used them in their machinery they must keep some method around here. What did these things eat? Baraz wasn't quite sure, non-organic Pokemon were a bit tougher to deal with and he had less experience with them. The only thing he'd seen of note in here was the pile of coal, perhaps they ate that? Or it was fed into something that would awaken them? There didn't seem to be a furnace or other way of burning it that he'd noticed. Walking over to the cart with the coal he gingerly picked up a manageable chunk and brought it over in front of one of the inert gear creatures.

Offering coal to the Klink has no effect. The creature remains dormant. From his new angle though, Baraz notices another door, one that was previous obscured. On the back of the metal drum that the gears, and gear Pokemon, are attached to, is a metal hatch with a rotating dog lever. It looks to have been opened recently, and the lever appears well oiled. There is a rusty shovel lent against the drum, its blade powdered with coal dust.

So people did maintain this, Baraz felt slightly less confident about his plan to take one of the gear Pokemon. They'd descend into the place soon enough anyway he supposed, it was worth a try. If someone showed up perhaps he could use his status as an explorer to strong-arm his way into letting them take it anyway? Well, his curiosity had been piqued anyway so he thought that it was worth it to try either way. After a short while of fumbling with the door, he realized that it was opened by the nearby lever. Reaching over he finally managed to open it, then he grabbed the shovel he began to toss coal into the aperture until he determined that there was a good amount inside. Closing it once more he looked for something to start the machine.

Next to the first lever is second smaller one, mounted to the side of the drum. Upon pulling it, Baraz hears the striking of tinder, and soon after, the woosh of flames filling the furnace. As the fire burns, the air in the large room begins to heat up, almost to the point that Baraz has to step away from the controls. Just before that point though, the temperature levels out, and the Klink start to move, as though they've absorbed some of the heat energy. Each one turns the series of gears attached to it, which increase in size as they go, until they coincide at one large gear atop the machine. This gear turns the wheels that the cable runs along, and it too begins to rotate, the length of steel slowly looping across the road to where it connects to the other building.

Baraz moved to a location facing one of the Pokemon, now that they were awake he might as well try and do what he had originally intended. Standing a bit away from it as not to crowd the newly awakened thing be got down on eye level to it and addressed it, using the same tone he had attempted to use earlier.
"Why hello there. It's strange finding you tied in with this, isn't it rather boring just sitting here doing this for hours? Wouldn't it be nice to get out and see what's outside of here?"

The Klink that Baraz addresses doesn't do much to acknowledge Baraz's question, but it doesn't look like it really can. Even if it tried to stop itself from turning, the force of all the others turning together would never allow it. The only visible difference in the inhuman creature is a slight widening of its eyes. It seems unable to extricate itself from the machinery as well, if it is attempting to do so.

Well, that was about what he should have expected. Baraz supposed that since he'd make the offer he should at least try. Nothing ventured nothing gained and all. Retrieving a Pokeball from his bag he tossed it at the ever turning creature.
"This should get you out of there."

As the Klink is absorbed by the Pokeball's magical energy, the rest of the machine shudders for a moment, but then continues to function, though perhaps more slowly. The Pokemon does not pop back out of the ball. It is captured.

Snatching up the Pokeball he beamed, his first acquisition on this journey. Looking down at the empty slot where it had been he shrugged and walked out of the room. Deciding that he really didn't want to keep examining this place he headed up to the neighboring building that the others were examining. Walking close to the other bulk he made an offhand comment as he examined what they were looking at.
"I looked in the other building and didn't find much, I started that cable machine to see what it did and captured a Pokemon that was in there. But that was everything of interest I saw."

Sitting in the cart, Mezzo was and the others were waiting for Baraz to arrive. "Yeah? What'd you get?" he said. He leaned up against the side of the cart closest to the lever. "We were about to take this thing out for a spin."
Once Baraz was on the cart, Mezzo would pull the lever. Hopefully whatever Baraz did wouldn't keep the cart from moving.

Hatui had climbed down from his perch and was now also residing in the cart waiting for Baraz. "A Pokemon? What kind of Pokemon was it?" he asked, curious as to what kind of Pokemon it could be. He didn't have experience with the kind of Pokemon that would ordinarily be found in this environment, that was for sure. Hatui watched as Mezzo pulled the lever, certain that something would happen. To him the machinery might as well be magic. Thus he braced himself for something and anything.

Baraz followed suit by hopping into the cart as well. Taking a relaxed pose once inside an ready for things to get moving.
"It is shaped like some sort of gear, I don't recognize the breed. I'll show you once we're in the mine."

With a pull of the lever, the cart begins to slowly roll forward, inching down the slight slope the track was built on. It seems the cable can not give it any forward momentum, only prevent it. The newly connected gears unwind the coil of steel as the group picks up speed heading toward the mineshaft entrance. Exiting the building in which the cart was contained, you take your last look at the sky for possibly a very long time. The cart begins to tilt forward as you reach the incline of the mine proper.
As you descend into the darkness, there is a brief span of time where it seems the cart will not stop accelerating. You plummet into the earth at frightening speed; could you see the stone in front of you, it would be but a blur. You do finally feel your weight return fully to your seats however, as the cable reaches its maximum allowed velocity. The chill, wet air rushes by you, nearly as loudly as the wheels of the cart screeching against the steel beneath them. Surely you must be about to fall out the bottom of the world itself!
Still, the cart continues to descend, the angle of the shaft never changing. Until suddenly, the cart jerks. It seems you have come to the end of the line. You remain stationary for an instant, the cold blackness all around you. You're there just long enough to notice a pink glow beneath you, before the cart is suddenly in motion again. You hear the cable behind you, striking the bottom of the shaft. It hadn't been doing that before. The cart then pitches forward, as you pass over a ledge you could not see. After a moment, the cart strikes the bottom of the pit in a tumult of collapsing metal and erupting water.
Athletics or Acrobatics checks to spring from the cart before it smashes itself against the submerged stone! DC 12 - 1 injury on a fail
As your heads break the surface of the underground pool, you hear the last bit of severed cable snake into the water behind you. The faint glow illuminates your dripping faces, the eerie light rendering you paler than you appeared on the surface. Small crystals are embedded in the walls of the roughly round cavern, glittering in varying hues of puce and violet. The shore of the subterranean pond is only a couple meters away, the dark rock glistening with the leftover spray deposited there upon your entry. Beyond is an uneven opening in the stone wall, the entrance to further caverns.

Baraz's only real experience with this sort of conveyance had been the lift to the upper city and that hadn't been particularly fast so he sat there in his relaxed posed waiting for the potentially long ride to end. As they entered the mine properly and began picking up speed he began to worry a bit more, holding onto the edge and watching the light of the mouth of the tunnel disappear behind them. The carts wailing filled his ears as he was buffeted by the rushing air. This was a bit more than he had bargained for, he began involuntarily screaming as they seemed to lose control. The sudden cease in motion throws him out of his seat and against the empty seat in front of him. Baraz only has time notice the strange glow beneath them and to sit back down before it begins moving again. Finally, after what has seemed like forever they were in open air and falling, Baraz tried to push himself off of the falling cart so he wouldn't get caught up in it. Acrobatics rUuV_va|2d6 Baraz failed pretty miserably, unable to extricate himself from his seat. When the cart impacted he was jostled and thrown into the pool. Coughing and spluttering he stood up in the shallow water. Wiping it from his eyes he looked around the cavern they had found themselves in. "Well, that could have gone better. Everyone still breathing?"2d6

Hatui was mixed with feelings of pure excitement and a lurking feeling of absolute terror as the cart started on its ride. These feelings were only compounded once they entered the mine and picked up speed. It was exhilarating, having finally started the adventure with such speed and wonder. Hatui tried to not think about how exactly this cart was going to be able to stop once they reached the end of the mine though. Baraz's frightened screams didn't comfort him any either. It was about at that exact moment that the cart did come to an abrupt halt, lurching its occupants forward. Hatui almost breathed a sigh of relief, but that was when he heard the cable that presumably had stopped them hit the ground. He only had a moment to wonder in terror if the cable had snapped when they were thrown forward once more.
There was no time to think any more:only time to react. He needed out of this cart or he could very well be killed. He attempted to jump out of his seat and push off of the cart so that wherever he landed would be away from the wrekage.

Hatui successfully managed to break free from the cart and collapsed into a pool of fresh water. Hatui loved swimming and diving in water. It was basically his natural environment. This wasn't quite the crisp, salty sea water that he was used to back home, but it was still almost a calming presence to him after that horrific ride. He swam around peacefully under the water for just a few moments, feeling a little more relieved, when reality sank back in: the others. Were they ok? Hatui swam gracefully up to the surface and looked around. Baraz was already in the shallows toward shore. "I'm fine," he called out. "Mezzo, Zee?" he asked hoping they would respond.4d6

When the cart started moving, Mezzo felt the excitement he initially felt when he and Zee left home. It was time. The starting of the cart marked the start of their adventure in earnest. Now that it was going forward there would be no going back. What surprised Mezzo was the absolute speed of the cart. It rushed down the tunnel at an incredible pace. While Mezzo was not afraid of going at high speeds, he was concerned about the structural integrity of the cart. How it had stayed on the rails for this long was a mystery to him, and how it was going to stop even more so. When it did finally stop, he was surprised. It didn't look like it had stopped anywhere in particular. Immediately he came up with an escape plan. The cart was already behaving in an irregular manner when the cable hit the ground. As the cart rolled forward and over the ledge, Mezzo immediately took action. He grabbed hold of Zee and turned to put his body between her and the water. He could only hope that the cart wouldn't crush them both. Intercept Melee: Acrobatics: mLUYIFPc3d6+1 (AP used) Mezzo successfully grabs hold of Zee and spins around. They are able to avoid the cart, but not without Mezzo striking the bottom of the underground pool. He isn't hurt too bad to swim back up to the surface. "Right here," Mezzo answers Hatui's call. The bard then makes his way to dry land.3d6+1

After the period of controlled speed, Zee had to admit she was a little worried when the cart began to accelerate. She didn't know anything about mining, and she certainly didn't know anything about minecarts. Since the others seemed to be holding it together alright, Zee resolved that she would too.
Not too long after she resolved this, it seemed like Baraz was starting to panic. His yelling echoed off the cave walls, likely attracting any hostile Pokemon to their location. Despite her stomach dropping out from under her, she kept her mouth clamped shut, her teeth grinding against each other. A few seconds later, she felt Mezzo's worried hand against her arm, pulling her close as they were thrown from the cart. He got them away from the twist of cables and collapsing cart, but he shielded her from an impact that he took himself.
It took but a moment for them to return to the surface, Zee coughing gently as she searched the darkness for Mezzo. "Are you okay?" she gasped as she looked him over. The fact that he had returned to the surface was promising enough. She weighed whether she should say that she could take care of herself, but she knew that she would have gotten hurt if not for Mezzo's heroics. If she could have sighed, she would have. Instead, she sidestroked over to the shore, collecting herself and starting to wring out her wool coat and clothing.
Once she was on land, she opened her backpack and looked down at her belongings. The ink bottles hadn't broken and her leather pack had, for the most part, remained waterproof. Even so, her sketchbook looked a tad waterlogged. Despite this, she pulled it out of her bag along with a piece of charcoal, then shook the materials off as if that would dry them. Wiping her drawing hand on her pants before she realized that they, too, were wet, she frowned.
"This is my fault," Zee apologized. "We didn't have to go this way. If I hadn't wanted to draw these blasted crystals..." she said, gesturing at the glimmering purple crystals which filled the cave with dim, eerie light. They weren't even that impressive, with tiny, quartz-like growths extending into the cavern. This time she sighed out loud. When she left, she resolved that she wouldn't be the pushy highborn gal. Now she was, and she had gotten them off to a rocky start, both literally and figuratively.

Baraz soddenly dragged himself onto dry land and began wringing out his clothing as best he could. Checking his supplies he ensured that nothing had been flung away by the impact. Once he was sufficiently dry to feel somewhat comfortable he shouldered his pack and began to examine the area they had found themselves in as he listened to the others talk.
"I don't know, this is the first chamber we've come across. Perhaps there are more interesting specimens further in. Either way, we should really proceed with caution."
After a short while of contemplation, he released his new companion.
"This is the Pokemon I found above, I believe I will call it Fritz."

Rotating his shoulder to make sure everything was in place, Mezzo didn't feel like anything was broken. It was going to be an awful bruise though. "I'm fine, really. A little water never hurt anyone," he said. Well, never hurt anyone unless they were a piece of sheet music. Fortunately, he kept the copies of the original pieces in a scroll case. The originals he left at home, hidden away in case he lost the copies. "And we are here because the our other two options were lava and blizzard. We made the best of a bad situation."
"That's an interesting looking pokemon, but I think we have more to worry about than nicknames," Mezzo replied, releasing his own pokemon. Legato had a great sense of smell, so it would be important to have him out. Mezzo took a look around the room. There seemed to be only one way out of the cavern. "Speaking of making the best of a bad situation, looks like there's only one way to go," he said, indicating to the uneven opening.
