"Likewise, both of you" said Ethan. Rio seemed to have a little bit too much energy, really, but who was he to judge? He shook Alaric's hand, though he did have to admit the whole high-and-mighty vibe he seemed to be going for was very annoying.
The corners of his mouth do curl into a smile at their reactions to Iota, though.
"A psychic, sentient clay spinning top. Pretty cool, eh? Couldn't have asked for a better partner" He told Rio, then finished off his milkshake and shrugged in Alaric's general direction.
"And I'd much rather not get lost this early into the journey. I've gotten way better but that doesn't change the fact that my sense of direction has been awful for as long as I remember"

Hissho's facial muscles twitched at the flagrant arrogance on display from this 'Alaric Weber' fellow. It was enough to sour his mood, the punk.
Without looking at Alaric, Hissho began to speak. "If we were meant to begin our journey, then I suspect we would've been instructed to do so," Hissho said flatly. "The people of Kimiya value knowledge very highly, but true understanding requires time and patience. Rushing ahead of themselves is how the people of Kimiya ended up being exiled from Kalos," Hissho said, reciting some of the history of the region. "This could very well be a test of patience--to see who will rush into the unknown half-cocked, and who will wait," he finished sternly. His voice had taken on the tone of a teacher scolding a student as he had spoken, and he had a serious look on his face. There was a definitive authority about him.

Via keeps a close eye on the extra two as they come keeping quiet as she evaluates them. The girl seemed cute: timid and impressionable, yet enthusiastic. In her experience those types of people were either crushed quickly by the world, or had already been crushed a long time ago. As for the interrupting Alaric... she was fairly good at moderating her expressions, but internally her sentiment matched the flicker of disgust on the old man's face.
As they talked about the floating pokemon that accompanied the coat man, Via closes her eyes, masking the fact that she was listening intently. Rio mentioned clay... clay was a type of ground, right? All they had in Orre was rocks and sand, so she wasn't quite certain, but it was the best guess she had. That would make it ground type. As for the floating... was that a trait of ground types? She had thought the flying thing was for flying ty- ... Wait, now he was saying it was a psychic floating top, so that made it psychic type. She'd have to keep that in mind, if she could. Not that she knew what types would be effective against a ground and psychic type, but she had to start somewhere.
Her processing finishing, Via began tilting the front legs of the chair earthwards, her eyes opening as they impacted the ground. She fixes her gaze on Rio as she speaks. "You seem to have a pretty distinct interest in Pokemon... what sort do you have?"

As the others join the conversation, Ul leaps go have fun with the new people, but Amanda scoops her up.
"Nope."
As much as Ul might want to socialize, Amanda doesn't like any of this honestly. Alaric rubs her the wrong way immediately, and Rio's a little excitable. And Via just seems to be almost itching for an excuse to fight back against someone. It seriously worries her, and she hopes she doesn't have to stay around her long. Hissho seems a little bit full of himself, or maybe that's just 'life experience' talking. At least Ethan seems to mean well.
Amanda sighs. She's not a fan of other people.

Rio smiles at Ethan, her eyes nervously flicking over to Via as she responds.
"I have my Shuppet Tiberius. They're really quite an interesting species if you look at their origins. Banette are the result of vengeful spirits animating discarded dolls, normally the zipped marionette style of doll that's common in Hoenn, and Shuppets are said to be the result of a Banette's shadow animating a paper doll or hand puppet." She says confidently before biting her lip and blushing a little. "I knitted Tiberius' body myself and borrowed the shadow of my grandfather's Banette." She adds in a quiet voice.
Alaric raises a sceptical eyebrow at Hissho's suggestion and speaks. "While that's a possibility I doubt it is reality. The professor must be aware of the others ages and their basic personalities. He doesn't send his assistants to meet every visiting trainer."

Ethan blinked.
"Man, I wasn't aware you could create a Shuppet like that... or give life to, I guess. Mind letting me have a look at Tib later?" he said, already coming up with a nickname for the ghost-type.
Hey, that was just how he worked.
Then Alaric quipped in, and Ethan couldn't help but snark back.
"Why are you here then, Alaric, instead of exploring with Abby and Joe? I'm pretty sure you didn't stay for the killer milkshakes"
He tapped his knuckles on his empty glass to make a point.

Amanda found herself curious as well. The ability to 'create' a pokemon like that is fascinating. Could the ritual (It at least sounds like a ritual) be altered in anyway? There's a few questions buzzing around her head, and she looks to Rio for a moment before looking away. Did she really want to get back into the middle of this? She just wanted to move on, this forced socialization is starting to stress her out. But for her, her questions win over her social awkwardness. She strains and looks back to Rio.
"Excuse me, Miss Rio? About the creation of your Shuppet, how did it work? Not the possession, unless you are an expert in the world beyond this one, I doubt you could answer that... I mean unless you are, in which case you can... But about the puppet you made. Did you make it 'look' like a Shuppet would when you created it? Or did it turn into the natural look after the possession? It seems a ritual like that is either very specific and strict, or could be tweaked to the user's desire. Could you use any doll, any material, I wonder?"
Amanda looks a bit red in the face forcing herself to socialize with a stranger in that much, and looks away as she waits for an answer. Ul seems to have also been paying attention, and turned into a Clefairy Poke-doll with a big dumb ditto smile. She points to herself while looking up at her trainer. Amanda quickly shakes her head at Ul.
"Nope, no no no. Ul that's a bad idea. Being a 'fake' doll while in a spiritual ritual could only lead to bad things. Even if it worked out, you'd change to some strange ghost hybrid and I don't need you to have that typing weakness."

Via turns her head to Amanda and blinks a bit in mild surprise as she begins shooting off questions towards Rio at a mile a minute. Seems they had hit upon a topic the other timid one was interested in as well. She mentally filed away the information of 'Shuppets' being ghost type, and otherwise decides not to butt into the conversation, leaning her chair back, content to just listen.

"Perhaps," Hissho said to Alaric, "perhaps not. Time will tell."
Hissho overheard the enthusiastic discussion revolving around ghost Pokemon. He briefly considered releasing his own partner, but thought better of it. There was no need to disturb him. He fidgeted in his seat, old bones creaking and cracking as he continued to wait.

Rio shrinks into herself as everyone focuses on her, a small blush appearing on her cheeks.
"I mean, you could look now. I don't keep him out because people get nervous around ghosts, but you guys are fine." She says, pulling a basic ball from her bag and tapping the button, releasing a smiling shuppet with a large line of stitches dividing it's face in half. It spins and shows off the stitches, revealing they go up its horn and go down its back, making it obvious it was made from 2 different scraps of cloth. Rio watches Tiberius with a smile, before looking back at Amanda. "I'm not really sure why it worked. I stitched some scraps of cloth pretty together badly and tried playing with it around my grandma's Banette. It didn't look much like a shuppet until suddenly it was one."
Alaric rewards Ethan with a wide, smug smile. "Because I suspected here would be more interesting. And so far I've been proven right with only half of us talking." He explains before turning to Hissho and Via. "You two have the looks of fighters - I wonder who would prevail in a fight. Youthful skill or well aged treachery?"

Amanda mentally catalogues the information. So it seems Rio may not have fully researched it before attempting. That's... not unexpected, exactly. Only obsessive weirdos like her would, afterall. However one of her questions seems to have been answered.
"So it did change into that form, only maybe keeping a little bit of the original doll you made. Interesting."
Amanda thinks for a moment before Ul nudges her.
"Oh uhhh, yes. Thank you Rio. And your Shuppet is pretty cute too...
Amanda trails off, in her own thoughts again, more or less ignoring this Alaric's comment about half the room not talking, and begins wondering if a Shuppet's form and power can be influenced still. Rio's was a little bit, maybe that tiny window could be exploited? She takes out some blank sheets for notes, and makes a Shuppet note sheet. She writes down all that Rio had said (making a basic puppet or doll and then using a Banette's shadow), and then listing Rio's shuppet and how it still has it's seam lines from the cloth 'doll' she had made. She then begins listing her ideas, first off using woven wicker to maybe make a grass version, or some sort of steel wool or chainmail-like material to make a steel one. It'd still be tied to just ghost but hey, if she can figure out the best dual-typing, maybe it could help down the line.

Ethan hadn't quite gotten to the point of taking notes, but he did look pretty interested.
"So Banette can naturally infuse puppets with Ghost anima to create Shuppet? That's very interesting. I may have to read up on it. It'd be pretty good evidence for my thesis, for sure"
He peered over Amanda's shoulder and took a glance at her notes.
"I don't think it's as simple as changing the material. It has probably already been tried. My studies also point towards the anima being rather temperamental, requiring some pretty massive energy loci to veer away from their natural manifestations. The only reason it works for Banette is probably because Shuppet are naturally cloth and Banette evolves from Shuppet. I'm willing to bet it doesn't work every time either"

Amanda first flinches when she hears Ethan over her shoulder. She's about to scoot away to get her personal bubble back, but when Ethan brings up some good points and conversation she can actually respond to, she looks back at him.
"I am aware it must have already been attempted. I'm nowhere near the top of the intelligence community and if I thought of this almost right away, it stands to reason someone else has thought about it, tried it, and is currently perfecting it or given up on the idea after trying everything. But if they are tempermental as you say... what are the specifics? Can the spirtual energies and the soul being summoned be placated in some way? Could they be convinced? And could the material still be cloth but warped in such a way that it takes on other properties? Like if you did micro-fiber steel weavings and made cloth out of that, would it still be a normal Shuppet? Would it be hardier, or even go the extreme, and be steel type alongside ghost type? Weavings out of plant matter, out of spider silk, imbued with elements... "
Amanda gestures over toward Rio's Shuppet.
"That seem line retaining tells me that there is SOME leeway in terms of what can be used as the base item. So if the limits can be found, I'd like to know. If anything, it would be a distraction from my main objective, something Ul tells me I need more of sometimes..."
Amanda blushes and trails off at the end there, like she realized she said a whole lot more than she meant to. Ul, however, is sitting there with a smug dit-spression. She may have caught herself at the end, but Ul knows her trainer enjoyed that to some extent. And anything above silence is an improvement for Amanda.

Hissho looks up at Alaric over the brim of his sunglasses. He had a very stern, discerning look in his face, as if assessing the young man harshly. He pushed the sunglasses up on his face, concealing his eyes once again, and spoke to Alaric in the most disarming tone he could muster. "What, you think an old man like me is a fighter?," he asked in his most sincere 'old man' voice. "It's enough of a battle just to get these old bones out of bed in the morning. What makes you think I'm a fighter?," he asked. Silently, though, Hissho was giving Alaric a more critical going over. Perhaps his hasty judgement about the young fella had been too hasty. 'It seems there's more to you than meets the eye, Alaric...,' he thought. Perhaps the lad had good instincts...or else he had just made a good guess. He spared a sideways glance at Via. The girl was most certainly a fighter of one kind or another. The weapon alone, and the way she carried it, was a dead giveaway. You didn't even have to talk to her, though her sour temperament would confirm any suspicions one had, at least from what Hissho had seen. He did vaguely wonder who would win in a fight between the two. It was a fair question. Rolling Guile to mislead Alaric and the others. Hissho's an old man, he's no fighter! GO, BIG GUILE ROLL~!!! jL3u3mCH1d6+1 1d6+1

Via's eyebrow quirks as Alaric addresses her, blowing a sharp puff of air out of her nose at the idiot's question. It was the question of someone who had never been struck by another man. As Hissho speaks, her eyes turn to him, narrowing slightly at his words. Intriguing. "Old man, the more you repeat your denial, the less believable it becomes."She leaves the topic at that, her gaze shifting to Alaric. "It's pointless to wonder. If it ever comes to a fight, I'll know. Until then, all are assumed to be an equal threat." Intuition Roll before editing in the post: 8l2p9R6g2d6

"You seem to think you'd be able to barter with the energies" said Ethan with a bit of a smirk. "Current documentation suggests that the elemental anima are not sentient, even though they can clearly induce sentience on inanimate objects. Furthermore, according to the lore documenting most of these events such as the olden Sinnoh legends, material and proper preparation was of utmost importance when calling on the powers of Pokemon such as Mesprit, Azelf and Uxie who seemed to be able to grant creatures cognition and thought. Therefore, the assumption that 'similar' materials would produce a different result or work at all seems a little far-fetched to me"Ethan sat back down, getting comfortable for what he was feeling was sure to become quite the thought-provoking conversation. "Let's take the whole 'metal nanofiber' example: Basic alchemy books, the little I could find without coming here which was like, one booklet given to me by a native to entice me to come to Kimiya, suggest each material interacts with the elemental anima in remarkably different ways based on some logic related to chemistry. Therefore, from that we can extrapolate that weaving steel nanofibers would change the entire interaction with Banette's particular ability to transfer Ghost anima to cloth, since this hypothetical 'alchemical composition' would be different"He rested his right hand against his cheek, pulling out a little notepad and paging through it so he could make sure he wasn't forgetting any of his notes. "Now, Banette's ability seems to be geared towards reproduction, or at least the spawning of more of its kind. It'd be worth to look for experiments, but my educated hypothesis would be that it is an instinctive reaction and that Banette cannot modify or control the output of Ghost anima it is commanding to animate a Shuppet. If such is the case, it would not be able to adjust said output or nature to make it coexist with another form of anima like, say, Steel anima. Therefore, it would make logical sense for the process to need external influence so that both forms of anima don't repel each other"Ethan then motioned to Rio's Shuppet. "The seam line in question consists of pieces of industrial thread held together by more thread, not really too much difference in terms of composition. I suspect there is some leniency indeed, but if a Banette spawns a Shuppet from hemp cloth I suspect you'd just get a hemp-colored Shuppet. I've thought about similar things a fair bit, seeing as my partner is an animate clay top that has no bodily functions, intakes no food, we're still not quite certain how they reproduce, and yet it's still clearly sentient and brimming with psychic energy. More Baltoy have got to be spawning somehow"He then blinked, and realized they had cut Rio from the conversation just a bit. He turned to the girl, a bit ashamed. "Sorry, that talk got rather technical for a bit. Hope you're not too bothered, sitting with the bookworms here?"Intuition xLQVoywY3d6 3d6

Amanda's Intuition: CZaUqzE|1d1Amanda has barely paid attention to the others, so we'll say Hissho's terrible guile wins on her Ethan's mini-lecture was a tad deflating. It didn't make Amanda upset or anything, but he was making a lot of sense of this topic, and seemed to have a better grasp on it. "Well I suppose it's not a 'sentient' entity, but whatever animates a Shuppet seems to decide on the vessel, so it knows 'something'. Or perhaps its just limited in it's scope, and that could be widened somehow? I'll admit, I'm walking into territory that is unfamiliar to me. My focus is rather narrow and doesn't include the spirit world."Amanda raises an eyebrow when Ethan brings up alchemy to the table. "I will say a lot of what you said hinges on Alchemy existing in the first place, and that it works in the ways you described. You yourself said you've found little info, and as I've only heard sparse second hand rumors, I'm doubtful to it's existence."1d1

Ethan grinned.
"I'm willing to hedge my bets on that. Alchemy existing or not, it doesn't change that things happen in Kimiya that don't happen anywhere else. There's a reason why the region is famous for their strange biomes and weird-typed Pokemon. Something's up, and there's enough documentation tested through the scientific method for me to not discard it out of hand"
He gave a laid-back shrug.
"Then again, I'm a sociology and mythology major. It's easy for me to give those ideas a chance"

Amanda shrugs.
"I am not willing to discard it as well but it'd need to exist and have someone willing to teach it's secrets. It's why it's only one of many reasons I came out to Kimiya. It's not the endgame for me unless it 'can' be. If one hundred children head outside in a given night looking for a shooting star, maybe one of them will find one. I'm assuming I would be one of the other ninety nine. I'm hoping that the idea of Alchemy means that Kimiya is filled to the brim with intellects of many types searching for it, much like yourself, to where I may find some knowing things of value and relevence to myself and what I need."
Amanda looks off to the side.
"You being that exact kind of person at least gives some credence to my hypothesis."
