It's been three days since Jack first awoke in this strange place, and he wakes up on the fourth day with the bright morning sun shining into his eyes. The clearing he's found for his self is small, fluffy trees and thick patches of grass that make his newly found flesh a lot happier than the scattered branches. It's the one place he's found that has enough room for him to really stretch out on the ground without one of the strange animals of this world appearing and getting upset with his presence. The day he arrived, he was so weak he could barely stand, feeling like something had been ripped from his chest. It's taken these past two days before the aches have faded, and this is the first time he's woken up feeling like he has enough energy to actually try...doing /something/ besides figuring out the strange differences in this body of his, and meeting the strange pokemon that has refused to leave his side. The black book rests on the ground beside him when he sits up, though he doesn't recall having placed it there--but this, too, is something he's starting to get used to... Around him, he can hear the soft sounds of the forest--chirps and growls and cries of the animals--no, pokemon--that live here. It's day four, and the weather is clear, and Jack is ready to explore. [Start us out with a Perception roll, please.]

Jack isn't used to feeling weak. When you're already dead, it's not the sort of thing you deal with often. He's been spending the past two days groaning rather theatrically whenever the aches flared up again; sadly, they went unappreciated, when there was no one to see except for the ghostly little creature that followed him around. He's taken to calling it Zero; he has no idea how to tell whether it's male or female, but he still thinks of it as a 'he'. He flips through the book curiously to find the picture again; his lips - and isn't that a strange sensation, having lips - move slowly as he reads the name next to it. "Misss-dre-ah-vusss..." He taps his chin as he considers it. "What a strange name."He unfolds himself up from the ground, stretching his arms out; his long, lanky frame hasn't changed, even if it's got skin covering the long bones now. "I have a good feeling about today! Let's try going a little farther than those berry trees today. Come on, Zero!" He whistles for Zero to follow him as he strides away from his resting place under the tree, patting his thigh. "Let's see what we can see!""See what we can see" apparently means darting around whenever something interesting catches his attention. Everything in this place is so different. The trees are all green and covered in leaves, there's even more green stuff on the ground, it's sunny... and a little dirty, too. He dusts some dirt off his suit with a slight frown; it never used to get dirty. Maybe it's only humans who get their clothes messed up like that. "Do you see anything interesting?" he calls to Zero. Zero does indeed seem to have found something on the edge of the clearing that Jack has come to not even a little consider home. On the far side of one of the trees, the green stuff, the grass, has been completely torn up! The dirt underneath is loose--not unlike the graveyards back home, in fact, during the zombie themes! The dirt had looked just like this, all loose and easy to punch a hand through, where someone had been buried alive under it! How fascinating! Jack's interest is split, however, as he hears a soft rustling behind him. He turns to find a small pink shape emerging from the tall, thick grass surrounding the clearing. It's feline in apperance, with pink and tan fur and small charms sticking out from it's bulbous tail. It looks up at him, sniffing at the air, and mewls softly. It doesn't seem particularly hostile or even afraid, as strange as that may be for Jack, just curious as it sits on its back paws and stares up at the pair.

Jack is just on the point of plunging a hand into the dirt to see if there is a grave under there - it would be nice to have a friend around who can talk - when he hears the tall grasses rustling. He whirls around to see what's making the noise and stops, if one will pardon the expression, dead. How strange! It's a cat that isn't black! With a funny-looking tail, too. Much as its apparent lack of fear might offend his professional pride, Jack doesn't want to scare it off before he has a chance to inspect it a little more closely. He crouches down to give the cat a looking-over, holding out one long hand. "Well, hello there, little one. Have you lost your witch?"Of course a cat comes with a witch. That's just how things go. Jack rolls to make friends! Yx6qsuj23d6+1[/roll]

The small pokemon stands up and takes a few bouncing steps forward to sniff at Jack's fingers. Seemingly liking whatever it smells, it shifts forward and butts against his hand, a soft purring audible as it nuzzles. Whatever Jack was expecting from his question, though, he doesn't seem to be receiving much of an answer....unless it has a witch named puuuurrrrrrrr, which, honestly probably isn't the worst name that Jack has ever heard a witch have.

Jack does at least know enough about cats to be pretty sure it's not trying to answer him with that. He strokes its ears lightly, running the back of his fingers over the soft fur. Cats aren't really his sort of pet - he prefers spiders - but a friendly face is definitely welcome. "You're certainly a friendly little fellow, aren't you? Are you the one who's been digging around here?"Jack's mostly just talking to himself. He's been known to outright declaim to himself on occasion, even before winding up some strange place where there's apparently no one to talk back. Frankly, having some time to himself is nice, now and again, but Jack's a people person at heart (or whatever normally passes for his heart). Though the question does bring him back to the patch of loose soil. "I wonder if you found anything..." And he starts digging the dirt out of the way. Everything's so much more tiring in this new body, but now he's curious. He's still working on this whole biological limitations thing - of course, he didn't used to have a biology. Athletics check for digging! 2lbD|2LN3d6 3d6

The small feline is more than happy to allow Jack to stroke it, arching its back and moving around to give him the best access. It's purring is alarmingly loud, almost like the hum of one of Dr. Finkelstein's machines! It doesn't react much to his attempts to speak to it, and Jack can't be sure if this is due to a lack of understanding, or if it's just ignoring him. The purring quiets as Jack pulls away to investigate the digging, and the pink pokemon sits a few feet away, licking its fur and ignoring him so long as the dirt doesn't splash on it.
Jack's long, lean fingers are alarmingly good at this whole digging thing, and it's barely ten minutes in when he manages to wrench from the earth a black box. It's black, cool to the touch, and engraved with some sort of silver design of interlocking squares that Jack, for all his knowledge of occult runes and the arcane, doesn't recognize. It's alarmingly light, the material unknown, and around a foot in every direction. It also has a single shape that isn't a square--the outline of a hand with long fingers, each with a simple oval where the finger print would be.

Jack turns the box over in his hands, inspecting it curiously. If the pattern has any real significance, he doesn't know it - it does look like the way a magician would decorate a box. He glances back at the cat thoughtfully. "Hmm... did you bury this? You must be stronger than you look!" He chuckles a little; even he can tell it's not very likely.
The handprint does, however, look about right for him. Jack didn't even have fingerprints until he came here, but he fits his fingertips against the ovals and flattens his hand out against the outline. "I wonder what's inside. What do you think, Zero?" he asks, not really expecting an answer - he's established at this point that he's not getting much comprehensible from the little floating head.
Zero floats in closer and offers his opinion anyway. Though it's really just a low, hissed "Dreavusssss..." But if that's meant to be a suggestion to leave it alone, Jack's not paying any attention to it. He was never very good at denying his own curiosity.

Jack finds that his hand fits perfectly in the center of the the marking, each of his fingertips barely pressing against the circles when the engravings begin to light up, spreading from that center point. If he attempts to pull away, he finds that his hand seems to be stuck to the box, which seems...significantly heavier. It barely budgets if he pulls away. As the engravings finish lighting up, some of the etchings seem to shift on the box and there's a soft *click*. The box begins to...dissolve is perhaps the best word, the materal melting away underJack's hand to reveal a small pile of...stuff. There doesn't seem to be any trace of the original box at all, even under the various items that it has been replaced by. The mysterious pile of things contains four neatly tied parchment scrolls, two jars, one large and full of some sort of greenery and one small with some sort of orangeish paste, and a small box with hinges, not unlike what Jack might expect a ring to be displayed in. Two of the scrolls are tied with a red ribbon, one is tied with a yellow ribbon, and the fourth is significantly smaller and tied only with a piece of string. The larger scrolls seem to have a series of intricate runes on them that make his head hurt to look at, not dissimilar from the etchings that were on the box, in fact. The smaller scroll has symbols much more in line with those he's seen in the black book--or she thinks, anyway, because when he next blinks, he's staring at a simple paragraph written in an almost perfect standard english font of some kind. It doesn't say much, and probably raises more questions than it answers, but seems to speak of using the other scrolls to 'capture' the essence of pokemon. It reads...very much like an instruction guide. The larger jar, when opened, smells strongly of herbs and medicine, not unlike the creams that Gram-Gram used to use on him when he burned his hand on the fire. The smaller jar smells...weirdly sour and gross to him, but Zero hovers close, looking at it intently when it opens, and the small pink cat stands, stretches, and looks up at him with big, shining eyes. It mews pitifully, batting at one of his legs with claws retracted. The box swings open to reveal a shiny, smooth glowing green stone...it's very warm to the touch, in fact. Jack has found a hidden cache! But who buried this? How did they do it without him noticing in the night? And, perhaps most importantly....why? He obtains: - 2 Basic Scrolls
- 1 Great Scroll
- 1 Myserious Scroll of Instruction
- 1 Collection Jar
- 600 points of Medicine scrap
- 1 Baby Food
- 1 Revive Stone

"Oh, what's this?" Jack starts to lift his hand to try and see what's happening underneath it as the box changes, only to be thwarted by the fact that it seems to be stuck. The way the material melts away under his hand intrigues him, and when he can finally pull it away he inspects his fingers to see if any traces were left behind. Nothing there, just pale skin. He starts to sift through the objects left behind, unrolling the scrolls to peruse them closely. All he gets from the large scrolls is those same angular patterns - looking at them this close makes his eyes want to cross, an unfortunate side effect of having eyeballs - but the smaller scroll is more helpful. Once it changes, anyway. "How strange! Look at this, you two!"He attempts to show the instructions to Zero and the little cat, but they seem far more interested in that little jar of pasty stuff. Normally foul-smelling orange paste would appeal to Jack, but this stuff makes him wrinkle his nose as he examines it. He makes an eloquent "Eeyuurgh!" sort of noise and screws the lid back on again before dropping it lightly back into the pile. The greenery is much more useful-looking - Jack knows herbs when he sees them, even if their medicinal properties are a bit beyond him. "I'll bet Sally could make a nice salad out of these. Hmm, I wonder where she is?" He rolls the stone between his fingers for a moment, feeling the pleasant warmth on his skin before slipping it back into the box. "I wonder who would bury a box like this here? Perhaps it's a gift?" It did seem to have been designed especially for Jack's hand to open it. He wishes he'd had time to examine that box a little more before it disappeared, but maybe there'll be another box. In the meantime, he has all these new things on his hands - a significant increase in resources, even if he's a little shaky on what exactly they're for. He undoes one of the red-ribboned scrolls again and glances over the instructions. The best way to learn what it does is to experiment, right? "Come here, little fellow!" He beckons to the cat, holding the scroll open. "Would you help me test this, please?" Of course, if it obliges, he's likely to wrap the scroll around it like a very small mummy with a too-short bandage. Jack likes new things, but he has trouble fitting them into his frame of reference sometimes. Jack uses a Basic Scroll on the Skitty unless it decides to object.

The cat doesn't stop batting at Jack's leg, trying to get his attention, until he finally rescrews the jar's lid and sets it on the ground. The skitty crouches down, peering at it, butt wiggling mightily--and it pounces on the jar of orange junk, landing on it and sending it rolling on its side. The skitty flops on the ground in the process--and immediately flails and twists back onto its feet, ears pressed to its head as it hisses in frustration. As Jack looks at the rest of the goods, it bats at the jar until finally accepting its inability to open the lid and sulking with its back to Jack and the jar both. It's fur is bristled, ears flat, and tail coiled neatly around its legs. It doesn't react to Jack's request, but it's also rather close to his feet--close enough that he's capable of reaching the cat with the scroll easily enough. To use a capture scroll, break the seal on the ribbon and throw it within a meter of the pokemon you would like to attempt to capture.
If you go through with it, make your capture rolls! We're still using the 1d100 system.

The cat may have competition, too - Zero dive-bombs the jar a couple of times as if he can scare it into submission. This is not noticeably more successful than the "wrestle with it and then sulk" method. He takes to floating around Jack's head, trying to convince the guy with hands to open the jar back up for him. Jack thoroughly misinterprets this as Zero trying to read over his shoulder, and holds up the instruction scroll for him. "Oh, do you want a better look, boy?"Zero gives him a disgusted look and floats a little way off in a huff. Humans. What can you do? Since the cat isn't objecting, Jack slips one long finger under the red seal and snaps it lightly, then drops the scroll... right on the cat's head, draping it at a jaunty angle. "Here, let's see if this works!"Capture Roll! V2jH4lEH1d100-2 1d100-2

The scroll falls on the pokemon and boops it on the head. It spins, flashing Jack what he imagines is the feline version of a disgruntled expression (which sums up the majority of cat expressions, really, or at least most of the haughty familiar types...). If it would have reacted to the affront or not, Jack isn't sure--because as it starts to respond, the scroll touches the ground and it's ribbons shoot out in a red blur to wrap around the kitten's belly, and the rest of the scroll quickly follows. The pokemon is cut off from view, but visibly flailing and fighting as the paper shape starts to glow and blur around the edges. There is much hissing and howling coming from within, but as the glow finally fades down, the feline has vanished. In its place is a parchment paper with an image of a curled up sleeping pink kitten drawn in the center of the sheet.

Jack watches in absolute fascination as the cat glows and disappears into the scroll. "Hmm... so that's what 'capturing' is." He picks up the sheet of paper and prods it gently, as if he expects the drawing of the cat to come to life. For all he knows it just might, since this is clearly magic paper.
"You know, before they changed, these instructions looked like the writing at the front of that book." Jack starts gathering up the items from the box and sticking them into the pockets of his suit as he talks. He's mostly just thinking out loud, though he's at least looking Zero's way. "Maybe that writing changed, too! I should check that. I think I left the book over by the tree..."
The big jar doesn't fit into any pockets, sadly, so he's left carrying it, with scrolls - including the rolled-up kitten picture - protruding from his pockets. Eventually he's going to have to find a better way to carry things. Maybe someone conveniently buried a cloth around here that he can tie around his stick... which he also left by the tree he was sleeping under. Well, he was going that way, anyway.

Jack will find his book beneath the tree, and as he approaches, it begins to flutter violently, pages turning on their own until it falls open somewhere in the middle. As he watches, colors begin to appear as the page starts to form images and words. A small feline--a Skitty, according to the top of the page, licks its paw in a picture on the page, and words slowly fill themselves in. It's as the last word darkens on the page that Jack feels something--pain, flaring into existence on his skin. He absentmindedly realizes that the parchment is no longer rolled up and sticking out of his pocket, but he's a bit too preoccupied with his burning... Jack has captured a pokemon! +5 TXP for your first successful pokemon capture! Your new pokemon has joined your team. You gain a marking, and it's information can be found in the pokedex. Jack claps one hand over the other with a loud, rattling, unnatural-sounding hiss of pain. The book opening on its own is forgotten as he focuses on the burning sensation - this body is so weak, so easy to injure. He used to be able to take off his head on a whim, and now the slightest little thing is agony. Jack isn't naturally a resentful person, but he'd really love to be back to his old bony self.
He's panting when he stops, out of breath, and looks up to find that Zero's darted in to examine him in concern. He waves the little Misdreavus off, to at least try and convince him to back away from his face a little. "It's all right, boy. I'm fine now." He lifts his hand off of the one he felt the pain in, to discover that the marking on the back of it has been joined by another - a black silhouette of a cat, its back arched and tail raised high, sitting at the knuckle of his middle finger next to the white ghost shape below his index finger. He prods the new mark gingerly, drawing in a breath in anticipation of the pain that winds up not coming.
"I wonder what caused that?" He picks up the book, perusing the page on "Skitty" curiously. "Oh, look, it's the little fellow! Or, hmm, maybe this one's a little lady instead? All of these Pokémon have such odd names."
He frowns in consternation when he discovers the sheet of parchment is gone from his pocket. He twists around to try and see if he dropped it on the way over. "Very strange. Hmm, I wonder if..." He turns the book around - right way up, sideways, upside down, examining the Skitty page. "Do you think the paper became the page in the book somehow, Zero?" It wouldn't be the oddest thing to happen since he got here - but then, the oddest thing is probably having some meat on his bones, no matter how spare it is.
Remembering what initially prompted him to check the book, he flips to the front, wondering if those strange letters have changed the way the instructions for the scrolls did.

The front pages of the book look...well, much like the last time Jack looked at them. Whatever caused the instructions to settle on the other scroll doesn't seem to have done anything for the words on the book. They're as confusing as they were the first time, sadly.

Well, it was worth a try. Jack makes a disappointed noise and claps the book shut again, tucking it away.
"Hmm... well, if this works like Zero..." Jack presses his finger against the black cat tattoo, his brow furrowing in concentration. And suddenly, there's a Skitty! Which... immediately makes a beeline for the Jack's leg on the side whose pocket the jar of orange stuff is in and starts making a spirited attempt to ascend it.
Jack leans down and picks her up, if only to save his leg. "I suppose you're going to need a name, aren't you? I know of a witch who named her cat Greymalkin... Hmm, that's a bit of a mouthful, isn't it? But Malkin sounds about right. What do you think?" The newly-dubbed Malkin yawns hugely, showing little Skitty teeth and a pink Skitty tongue in her ostentatious display of indifference. Jack looks slightly offended. "Well, I liked it!"
Zero thinks Malkin has gotten way too much attention, and makes another dive-bomb attempt at the baby food jar, making an eerie whistling noise as if Jack's pants are any more likely to be intimidated than the jar itself. Jack staggers a little when Zero rebounds off his leg, and glowers down at him sternly. Boy, can Jack glower when he wants to. "Well! Neither one of you is getting any unless you can behave yourselves!"
He sets Malkin down and looks around. "Now, I think we were planning to explore today!" Jack, no one but you was planning much of anything. "Let's try... this way!" He thrusts out an arm in a heroic pose and strides out boldly in an entirely random direction. It turns out to be vaguely northwestward, though Jack doesn't much care where he heads as long as it's new scenery.
Zero and Malkin look at each other. Malkin rolls her eyes, and Zero dips his head, as close to a shrug as something without shoulders can get. Then they set off after him.

Jack's path leads him through thick trees and tall grasses, though he does pass a small, still pond at one point in his walk. It isn't the freshest, cleanest water, but his approach scatters a few small rodents of some kind into the underbrush. If they'd been drinking it, it must at least be somewhat safe, right?
[How long does Jack intend to walk? Is he looking for anything in particular? Please include a perception roll in your next post.]

Jack makes a note of that pond. It'll be a good place to remember when the water he took from the fountain at home runs out. The scurrying rodents catch his attention for a moment - especially when Malkin runs off to chase them through the grass - but it's not like there aren't rats in Halloween Town, too. He considers the trees as he walks. It's still so strange to see trees that don't look more like twisted claws reaching for the sky. He could get used to the change of scenery, even if he'd get homesick eventually. "I wonder if there's anyone else around?" He glances over at Zero. "All this space and no people at all seems strange. What do you think, boy? Should we go looking for someone else?"Zero snickers in a distinctly devilish way. It doesn't take a genius to see that if they do find anyone else he's planning to try and scare them himself. Jack taps his chin. "I think we should get a good look at the lay of the land. Let's try and find somewhere high up." He looks left, looks right, trying to see if there's any visible direction that the land rises in. Zero follows behind him, floating at head level and playing lookout. Eventually Malkin scampers after them when she gets tired of chasing rodents, sniffing the new smells in the air curiously. Jack's interested in seeing anything! But at the moment he's looking for a high place, a ridge or a hill, where he can get a good look at the terrain. He's planning on walking 'til he finds something, though realistically once it hits as close to noon as he can figure he's probably going to turn around.
