Ken Mercury's life up till this point was one of rigid structure and discipline. He was born on Cinibar Island in the Kanto region 21 years ago to a small family of three. His father, Fredrick Mercury was once a fairly accomplished trainer who tried his luck with the Kanto gym circuit. When that didn't net him a championship he decided to settle on a more financially stable career path than gambling with kids over animal fighting rings.
Freddy met his wife Hillary in Cerulean city at a recruiting drive for the KDF, The Kanto Defense Force, and their relationship quickly developed from a recruiter and her client into something more with Freddy's skilled flirting. After two successful tours of duty and two years of a well hidden relationship between coworkers, they took a leave of absence and started their family back in Freddy's hometown of Cinibar.
Their first child was Ken's older sister Emily, a girl who took well to her parent's rigid upbringing. There was of course time for fun in the household thanks to Frederick's easy smile, but Emily grew up to be a stoic serious woman who proudly followed her parents into the military. She loves her brother Ken in her own way but is a firm believer in tough love like her mother.
Growing up, Ken was closest to his dad as the women in the house had little skill at expressing affection. He loved the stories of his father's adventures as a pokemon trainer and dreamed of forging his own story. Though Ken never voiced this whimsical desire to his parents, it was expected of him to follow them into the armed forces, his father saw right through him and visited Pallet town to aquire a gift for Ken's tenth birthday. Ken named the Charmander Emberstoke and was overjoyed when his father made his offer.
Freddy would train Ken as best he could and do his part to pass on his skills as both a trainer and a soldier if, in exchange, Ken would wait until he finishes high-school before he sets out on his journey. This would also give the newborn Emberstoke the chance to grow into his adolescence before they tried training him at all. If the pokemon trainer thing doesn't work out like it failed to for Freddy, Ken would have the training to move into the family business as a backup plan.
Ken spent the next eight years working hard in school and exercising seriously at home. He was eventually drafted onto the high-school basketball team and used the practices to further refine his strength and speed. During his leisure time he focused on Emberstoke and the two of them became close friends while the little Charmander learned what their future working relationship would be like. Emberstoke came to understand that it was normal for the pack leader (Fredrick) to push their followers hard during training and combat. Expecting nothing but the best and forcibly pushing you past your limit if you began to falter. He also learned that during resting time it was OK to drop the serious mask and express their care by treating the student's injuries. Both Ken and Emberstoke knew that their roles would closely mirror Ken and his father when it was time to set out on their own and the little lizard was eager to prove he could handle any training Ken could throw at him.
After high-school Ken spent two years finishing up his own training and taking some classes at the Pokémon Training Academy on the mainland. Now that he's ready to start he has decided to make his debute in Unova where the average age of pokemon trainers is a bit closer to his own. His mom and sister both think he's being a bit irresponsible by choosing such a risky career where most never make enough to live off it but they understand how much he wants it and have been supportive.
Now he's just enjoying his boat ride on his way to his first adventure.

Almost done, currently writing the backstory. for the character sheet did you say you would let us start with supernatural classes? I forget. I'm deciding between frost touched and second rider feature.

Marina's parents were members of the infamous team rocket. Marina was their only child. She did not seem to take to the team rockets normal activities very well so they tried to find a way she could help them out so they could stay together as a family, since there wasn't a team rocket day care.
They taught Marina how to treat pokemon and people and stole books for her to learn more from and she took to that very well. They took her along with them on missions and her medical training allowed them to stay longer in the field.
On one of the first missions they went on together when they were hiding out on a ranch, Marina and a ponyta started to get along well together. When they had to leave they decided to take the ponyta with them and it became Marina's first pokemon.
It wasn't too much later that team rocket disbanded. Marina's parents didn't want to bring her along anymore without the security that being in a big gang brought. So they left her at a boarding school.
Marina didn't hear anything about her parents when team rocket tried to make a comeback but she did hear that some team rocket members went to Unova so when she turned 18 she left the boarding school and snuck on board the SS Baychimo with the help of a former member of team rocket who was part of the crew.

Assistant professor Alex Mason was a researcher in the Pokemon lab on Cinnabar Island, having been the kind of guy who never grew out of the 'kids love dinosaurs' phase. When he was 12 and walking along the beach (Looking for seashells and smaller, non-pokemon fossils) he found an egg washed up on the shore. When he took it to the local pokemon center and was told that it was a Totodile egg. Being a fresh-water pokemon from Johto, this struck Alex as unusual and interesting, and he took it upon himself to take care of the Totodile when it hatched.
He named the Totodile Gustave after a story of a prehistoric feraligatr of titanic size that had been found in Lake Rage. Gustave was the one primarily responsible Alex and many others survival when the Cinnabar Island's volcano erupted. Years later, he set out in an effort to find a yet-undiscovered pokemon via the fossils found in the Unova desert, with Gustave beside him.

Mark's parents are a mixed bag. His Dad, a moderately successful trainer in the Unova Region, met his mother, a Pokémon breeder, on his adventure. Raised to learn how best to catch and teach Pokémon, he had always expressed a desire to grow up to be a trainer, and go on his own adventure.
His parents introduced him to both their and their friends Pokémon in an effort took familiarize him to them, and found that he had the oddest connection to psychic types. They felt more comfortable around him, and were more willing to listen.
In school, he met his new classmate Dave, another child who wanted to be a trainer. Dave, while rather enthusiastic about grass type Pokémon, did not begrudge the difference in opinion on types, and the two were fast friends, promising to help each other grow to be better trainers when they went on their journey.
Having graduated high school, Mark went to Kalos, to meet a psychic breeder who was a friend of the family, to get his Pokémon. Having gotten his Ralts from an egg, he named her Karen, and spent a month learning more about psychic type Pokémon.
Having learned as much as he could in his time abroad, Mark decided it was time to return home to Unova, and boarded the SS Baychimo to travel home to begin his Pokémon adventure. Little did he know, his journey would indeed start, just not as planned...
