Hours Prior to the Beginning of the Reign of the as-of-yet-unnamed Dragon Dynasty:
The past few hours have been hectic, to say the least. You have flown into the Crucible in the pre-dawn hours, spent some time being fawned over with make-up and fit for robes, and brought up to a box overlooking the floor of The Imperial Hall, a large chamber that you are told will serve as your throne room.
Below you, local highborns begin to fill the floor, and several foreign delegations begin to take their seats in the other sky boxes. Your advisers sit in one of the boxes ajacent to yours, and the three figures you assume must be the advisers of your counterpart sit in the other adjacent box. Somebody has left a program for the day's proceedings, carved into a fine wax tablet, on each of your seats:
Looking around, there are only two other individuals in your box. The first, standing a respectful distance away by the door, is a strange figure hewn from sandstone, who must surely be one of the Timeless you have heard about. The stonebeing's tall lanky body and sharp facial features are closer in shape to those of a lemur than those of a human, and it wears nothing but a fancy vest that likely designates it as an important servant or bureaucrat.
The other figure must be your future spouse, who like yourself is presently wearing a flowing black unisex robe, which you have been told is the traditional garb for local highborns in such a time of mourning as this.

Supplemental House Rules and MechanicsWeekly Actions - This campaign is designed to cover a somewhat longer span of time, and as such will be split into weekly turns. On each turn each player takes five actions, most of which will be resolved with a single skill check. You may use the skills of your Lati@s form to make your weekly turn rolls, but be advised that doing so will generally get you into situations with high difficulty, risk, and reward.
After the initial results of the turn are posted, you will follow up by resolving and RP and/or Adventure the turn got you into. Once everything else is resolved, there will usually be a scene with both characters sitting the throne at court, which will serve to push the main plot, develop the PC's in a moral and political sense, and provide some ideas for what you might want to do on their next weekly turn. Following that, both players will post their five actions for the next turn, and the cycle starts again.
List of Weekly Turn Actions:Quest - A quest action requires no roll to initiate, and dumps you in a 1-3 scene long adventure where the full PTU mechanical rules apply. There will be no shortage of quests made available to you, and the risks and rewards will usually be stated well in advance, and you can also come up with your own based on your character's beliefs, values, and knowledge of the world. You may take more than one quest a Weekly Turn, but you may usually only bring each of your Pokemon to one quest per week, as this will allow me to keep time abstract without worrying about tracking injuries (Spirits heal fast, so trainer injuries go away as soon as a quest is over). For each quest you will receive a set of gear - usually adventuring equipment and level appropriate Pokeballs and Medicine. If you choose to spend a research, seek advice, or manipulate action to learn more about the specifics of your quest, the gear you recieve will be more specifically useful.
Seek Advice - Ask the NPCs in your life to advise you on specific issues. Each Seek Advice action will yield five specific pieces of information. This means you may ask five NPCs one question each, one NPC five questions, or any combination in between. You may seek advice from any NPC you are on speaking terms with, although NPCs with an agenda or a dislike of your character may give bad advice. You may choose to make an intuition roll, to check for deception and/or ill intent, for each NPC you seek advice from while taking this action, but I will use RNG to decide which of those rolls apply to which NPC, so you will not necessarily know who your particularly good or bad rolls apply to. You may seek advice up to twice per weekly turn. Seek advice should only be used to ask what do you think should be done about X, and will usually only yield opinions. Most other specific requests for NPCs fall under the manipulate action.
Sit the Throne - Taking the Sit the Throne action represents spending more of your time than is required at court. Sitting the throne is a passive action that requires no roll and allows those who wish to approach you with problems and opportunities to do so. Expect to weigh in on minor local issues and legal proceedings, which are not usually handled at times the monarchs are scheduled to appear, and listen to the petitions of those who would usually be considered too unimportant to address you directly. If you are sitting the throne without your spouse, there is a good chance the assembled court will bring up ideas and topics they fear he/she might not approve of. You may sit the throne once per week on your own, and an additional time per week with your spouse.
Decree - As one half of a nearly sovereign monarchy, your power is limited only by the royal budget, a handful of Lugia's imperial decrees, and the laws of common sense. If both King and Queen spend an action to declare a decree in unison, said decree becomes the law of the land without question. If one of the monarchs decide to make a unilateral decree, they must make a (often difficult) command roll to convince the assembled court to approve it.
Explore/Hunt - The Explore and Hunt actions can be used on any location you have seen on a map or have been made aware of through a Quest, RP, or another weekly action. Explore/Hunt actions use various skill rolls. Survival is used in untamed wilderness areas, Stealth in hostile locations, Athletics or Acrobatics if you intend to explore/hunt while mounted, Perception or intuition in highly populated areas, Command in territory you control, and Charm or Guile if you intend to conduct your hunt/exploration via socialization with the local NPC population. On a roll of 8+, an explore action yields interesting and often positive results of the GM's choosing that are never directly harmful to your character. A hunt action has you looking for something specific, and the DC for finding it varies based on how rare/difficult/specific your quarry is to find in your chosen location. To hunt for an exact Pokemon or item, you must have learned through research, RP, questing, manipulation, or other means that your specific quarry is in the area. Should your character take fewer quests than his/her counterpart on a given turn, or if you are hunting something crazy like a Master Ball or exceedingly powerful Pokemon, the GM reserves the right to ignore your roll and turn the Explore/Hunt action into a proper encounter at his discretion. You may take as many explore/hunt actions as you like each weekly turn.
Research - Research is the act of using a library or archive to find either general or specific information on a given topic. To conduct research, you must have knowledge of and access to a library or archive. Each library and/or archive is different in terms of information contained, the skill used to research within, and the difficulty of research. A collection of maps and military orders from the Blue Front, for example, might require combat skill to study, and yield all sorts of information about the military tactics and history of the Front and their enemies. You may conduct research specifically in pursuit of another action you wish to take on this or a future weekly turn, and if successful can expect some sort of boon or reduction in DC to help you along. You may conduct as many research actions as you like on a single weekly turn.
Experiment - To experiment is to use a lab/workstation to fiddle with an item(s) and/or a willing or helpless NPC/Pokemon. You must have knowledge of and access to a lab or workstation to conduct experiments. The exact lab or workstation you are using dictates the risk, difficulty, material and subjects used, skill required, cost, and expected results of the experiments you are permitted to preform. It is possible, albeit usually difficult, to learn new homebrew recipes through experimentation. Experiments on oneself or ones' Pokemon is a very high risk and high reward endeavor.
Training - Training is the art of honing the physical and mental abilities of yourself and your Pokemon at some public institution such as a dojo or under a willing instructor. This is somewhat different from the basic training rules given by the PTU rulebook, which are covered under Private Labor. The costs, skill roll, DC, and rewards of training depend on the institution or dojo. Depending on the trainer or institution you can gain Pokemon EXP, Trainer EXP, tutor points, temporary boons for your next encounter, and progress towards homebrew feats/edges/abilities/moves/ect from successful training. You may conduct as many training actions as you like per week, but there are limits to how many times you or one of your Pokemon may benefit from training. Each individual may only benefit from a weekly number of physical training sessions equal to their athletic skill rank, and a number of mental training sessions equal to their focus skill rank. On weekly turns with little questing going on, a training session may be resolved with a proper encounter as opposed to a simple skill check.
Private Labor - Private Labor is the use of a weekly turn action to account for time spent conducting the extended actions allowed by the PTU rules. When conducting private labor, you may use as many of your non-combat features, recipes, Pokemon abilities, and edges as you like, apply your training features to your all your Pokemon (which will last through the end of the week), break down any items you wish for scrap, and conduct five days worth of EXP training. When crafting, you have a budget of 800 monnies times your trainer level in addition to scrap and funds you have managed to secure from elsewhere. You may conduct private labor once per weekly turn.
NPC Relations & Politics - This game is as much a political thriller as it is a Pokemon Campaign, and as such supplemental rules are in place to govern the PC's relations with other factions and individuals.NPC RP Rules: For the sake of the GM's sanity, the following rules are in place to determine when you can RP with NPCs, and with which NPCs you may RP with. Each player may have one guaranteed RP at any given time, which they must wrap up before moving onto the next one. In addition, Kota and Akileija are free to RP with each other whenever they want, and if the GM decides to introduce NPCs into those situations, they may be RPed with in that context. Aside from that, if the other player is inside some sort of mechanical scene brought about by a Quest/Explore/Hunt/Training action, and your character is not, you may run an additional RP with an NPC while you wait. You may choose to RP with an NPC marked as a roommate or house staff at any time. You may also RP with an NPC who serves you or your court as a lobbyist, partisan, or minion at any time so long as they are known to be within the borders of your Kingdom. Beyond that, you may RP with any NPC whom you wound up interacting with through your most recent set of Weekly Turn Actions, or whom was present and mentioned at the post weekly turn court session. Social Rolls may be made at any time during an RP, but if you want to get any more mechanically involved than that, it will cost you an action off your next weekly turn. The NPC Lists: Three lists of notable NPCs will be kept - one for each player, and one for the royal court/kingdom itself. An NPC's list entree will include his or her location, title, a brief descriptive sentence or two, and any number of tags that describe their mechanical role. Free Social Action: If something is considered a free social interaction, it may be resolved anytime you are in contact with the right NPC. This could be done during an RP with the relevant NPC, an otherwise unrelated manipulation or training action with them, or even while sitting the throne of the NPC has easy access to the Crucible and the Free Social Action is something that can be talked about in public. NPC Tags: {Roommate} or {House Staff} - The Roommate or House Staff tag simply means that this NPC can be easily found around your place of residence. Roommates and House Staff are always available for RP. If a Roommate or House Staff decides to act against you, they will likely be in a better position to cause you harm than most.
{Personally Trusted} - This tag indicates an NPC that you trust and have allowed access to your home. Such NPCs may approach you unsolicited with quests or opportunities that may not be safe to discuss at a public meeting of the royal court. If a trusted NPC decides to act against you, they will likely be in a better position to cause you harm than most. If you are dwelling with your spouse, a Trusted NPC has the same upper hand towards harming them as well. If you have many Personally Trusted NPC friends, conducting Private Labor in your home will also become a private Sit the Throne Action, but you will have to sleep with one eye open. You may declare any NPC to be Personally Trusted at any given time via Free Social Action. Revoking your trust without good reason is a great way to piss an NPC off.
{Personal Partisan}, {National Partisian}, and/or {Willing (Personal/National) Partisan} - A Partisan is somebody who has your back and is always willing to take your side on a given issue. Manipulation actions to ask reasonable favors of a Partisan always succeed. Personal Partisans might not care about the intrests of the kingdom or your spouse, and in turn national partisans might react poorly if used for personal gain. You will almost always have plenty of warning before a Partisan turns against you. To gain a Partisan, you must have multiple positive interactions with your chosen mark until they gain the {Willing Partisan} tag, at which point you can make them a Partisan with a Free Social Action. You may have a number of personal partisans equal to your command rank. The kingdom may have six national partisans, and these slots may be filled by either monarch. Most partisans will take being fired or replaced poorly.
{Personal Minion}, {Personal Minion (Mobility X)}, {Personal Minion (Small or Tiny) or {Willing Minion} - A personal minion is a friendly NPC who seeks glory and adventure at your side. When gaining a minion, you will be given some basic instructions to gen that character up yourself. It is a free social action to request that a minion join you on an upcoming quest. Manipulate actions to convince a minion to seek out specific and reasonable training is automatically successful. To gain a minion, you must use a manipulate action to request the service of an NPC of unremarkable rank or station, or to request that an NPC with command over others grant you an underling. You may have as many minions as you are willing to gen up, but you are generally limited to only bringing as many minions to a quest as you can carry on your back in spirit form via your mountable capability. Small minions take up only half a mountable slot, and tiny minions only a third. Minions who live in an area where you are partaking in a quest may always tag along regardless of carrying capacity. Convincing your spouse to carry extra minions for you on a quest you are tackling together is allowed. Minions may have a means of keeping up with your Hypersonic Flight over various distances, which will be reflected with a mobility value in their minion tag.
{Personal Lobbyist (Faction)} or {Court Lobbyist (Faction)} - A Lobbyist is an NPC sent by some faction or another, most often a neighboring kingdom or spiritual order, to try and influence your actions. Manipulate actions to seek a quest or opportunity that benefits a Lobbyist's cause always succeed and never require a roll. If you have a history of aiding a lobbyist's cause, almost all manipulate interactions against said lobbyist will be made easier.
{Personal Antagonist}, {Personal Rival}, or {Enemy of the Kingdom} - These tags all represent NPCs that you know are acting against you. Personal Antagonists are individuals who act against you with some personal ill will. Personal Rivals are seeking to complete some shared and often mutually exclusive goal before you do. An enemy of the state is somebody who actively seeks to harm Magikarp Pass or undermine its interests. You can declare somebody an Antagonist or Rival as a Free Social Action. You can declare somebody an Enemy of the Kingdom with a Decree action. Of course, some NPCs will declare themselves as such with no action required on your part. These hostile NPCs will act independently, and you will likely hear of their progress at court from time to time if you don't keep tabs on them yourself. Struggling against and cleaning up after Antagonists, Rivals, and Enemies will of course grant extra opportunities of all sorts.
{(Physical/Mental) Instructor (X Pokemon, Y Trainers)} - This tag indicates somebody willing to help you complete a training action. The tag indicates if the training provided is phyiscal or mental, and how many trainers and/or Pokemon can be taught at once.
{Delegated}, {Delegated (Time Remaining)}, or {Awaiting Check-in} - These tags indicate that you (or your spouse) have used a manipulation action to assign this NPC a task. Sometimes the NPC will give you a fairly accurate guess as to how long it will take to complete the given task, and after that amount of time elapses their tag changes to {Awaiting Check-in}, at which point you may check in with them as a free social action. If you do not get an estimate, you must use your best judgement as to when it is okay check in with them; Constant badgering of an NPC over a task may piss it off or throw it off its game. If the delegated task is not a sensitive matter, the NPC may approach you in court when they are finished.

Akileija resisted the urge to stomp as she entered the box, her mind boiling with unspoken invective. Everything was going exactly as she'd rather it not, right down to the black robe, which was annoyingly heavy for the warm spring weather. Suppressing the urge to grip the hilt of her currently missing sword (swept away by a servant with the rest of her clothes so she could change into the robe), she looked around, taking in those present. She noted the box where her advisers sat, giving a tiny wave and receiving a wide smile from Kaz in return, before looking over to the person she assumed to be Kota. He didn't look like much, but from what Posun and Kaz had told her...she decided to keep her mouth shut for now. That resolution was quickly broken when she took an instant to scan over the wax tablet, a quiet curse slipping out almost involuntarily. Speeches?! Nobody said anything about speeches...

Battlescar had its own share of ceremonial traditions, and as dutiful Prince, Kota had endured all of them with the respect and poise they were due. But, though he understood most kingdoms proffered more importance to such ceremonies than his own, he'd been unprepared for just how... rigid and stuffy the day's events were turning out to be. The robe's discomfort, the scrutiny of the crowd, the droning of the presenters - these things, he could endure. But he was growing uncertain how much longer he could do so without showing his impatience. It took a great feat of willpower to restrain himself to the barest hint of a downturn at the corner of his lip. To those who were close enough - the Timeless attendant and his bride-to-be - small tics, the twitch of an eyebrow, the slight tapping of a finger, were evident. At the University, he had walked out of lectures before when the speaker failed to hold his attention with relevant and useful information, but here he had no such option.
Whatever common ground he and Akileija might or might not be able to find, one glance at her was at least enough to see she was just as resignedly unenthusiastic about the proceedings as Kota. He wasn't certain whether that was a good omen or bad. He very much wanted to ask her opinion on the matter, to gauge her response, get some measure of her. But speaking to her now would be too inappropriate.
Best that Kota prepare himself now. His days of Battlescar's straightforward court were over. Doublespeak, protocol, and political concessions would be the way of things now. He didn't relish the prospect.

After several minutes pass to allow the final few dignitaries to flow into the hall, and an ancient looking clerk calls the court into session, the first speaker rises from a seat near the front of the room to give his address. Like the Timeless sharing your box, Crocus Castrum is a humanoid figure hewn from sandstone, but that is where the similarities end. Crocus' frame is short and stout, and their head and facial features are close to those of a fish. They wears no clothes, and indeed lack any indecent features that most races might wish to cover, but his body is adorned with yellow gemstones and various bands, plates, and spikes of military grade metal. AkileijaCrocus' fish like face and body endowed with gems matches the description of The Theif of Lightning, one of the three Timeless who stole a spirit form from Ho-Oh, as given in the book your brother gifted you. Crocus speaks in a strange low voice that seems not to eminate from its mouth, but from the entire Imperial Hall. "The history of Magikarp Pass begins with the history of my People, called Timeless by the humans. The timeless were once one of many earth people who dominated this realm before the offworld gods elevated particular kinds of organic beings including humans. The Timeless settled these mountians, and constructed the Crucible in which you stand, so long ago that is impossible to put an exact age on it. Diamond Aurum the Creator, the only builder of the Crucible who still exists, estimates this place is fifteen to seventeen times as old as human history."
You note Crocus is almost completely still as they speak. Its mouth is not moving at all. "Human history began when Lugia joined the other gods in uplifting an organic species to serve as his own personal battery of worship. To us your terms, as I shall for the rest of this lesson, this happened eight thousand years ago. Five hundred years after that, the first humans came to these lands, led by Jiang Quin, called the father of the east. These first humans had to fight the Orcs of Ho-Oh, the other peoples, and even the timeless to carve out a home, but eventually founded the Eastern Empire, which ruled over what are now the Kingdoms of Spade, Magikarp Pass, and Gyrados Falls, as well as the northern territories of what is today called the Kingdom of Farfetch’d Cliffs."Crocus pauses, as if to pharse his next statement carefully. "At... At this time, there was an... unforchunate disagreement amoung the Timeless. Some of us, the short sighted, wished to align with the other Earth People and erridicate the Organic Civilizations on our territory, while others, the wise, saw the writting on the wall and sought to align with humanity, who we viewed as closer to our nature than the Orcs. Knowing that the barter of mates and offspring was the greatest tool in human diplomacy, three of the wise devised a way to intrude upon Ho-Oh's realm, and steal organic forms so that they might take organic mates and sire organic children."
The speaker's facial features shift at long last, briefly showing a prideful smirk. "These three, called 'Stone Parents' or 'Spirit Thieves' quickly married into human high society, and earned the Timeless Citizenship within the Eastern Empire. All was good for a time, until the rise of the Demon God Heatran five about thousand and five hundred years ago. Heatran craved destruction and killed many, and was only defeated when King Jiang Pòhài banned the worhsip of all gods save Regigigas, the Divine Demon Hunter. In return for this monotheistic worship, Regigigas gave Magikarp Pass the strength and knowledge to defeat and capture Heatran. Cornered by a suddenly empowered foe, the Demon God choose to destroy itself, along with much of Magikarp Pass, in an apocalyptic fireball."The fish like face of Crocus again shifts, this time forming a frown. "The Detonation of Heatran more or less marked the end of the Eastern Empire, as Imperial King Pòhài was slain in the blast, and his eldest sons were twins who could not agree on how their subjects should rebuild themselves. The initially split was bloodless, and the Empire was divided into Spade in the North and Magikarp Pass in the South. The southern Jiang Dynasty ran Magikarp Pass as a theocracy based upon the monotheistic worship of Regigigas and the Earth Philosophy of the Timeless, while our neighbors to the North twisted Regigigas' teachings, and exploited the knowledge he gave them to refine the acts of demon worship and witchcraft from which they drew power. The Southern Jiang Dynasty of Magikarp Pass split rule evenly between the humans and the timeless - every second generation the eldest daughter would be named heir and made to marry one of the Stone Parents, who would rule as king as long as his wife lived. The Stone Parents took turns holding the power, so each would sit the throne every sixth generation."The frown on the face of Crocus widens as he continues. "Starting around three thousand years ago, there was a three hundred year long period called the centuries of terror during which several other demon gods rose around the world, and each was put down with Regigigas' assistance and great cost. Eventually Regigigas reached the conclusion that the only way to prevent such demonic uprisings was to vastly reduce the population of sentient lifeforms, and resolved destroy all civilizations that did not worship him exclusively. Fewer mortals meant less demon worship. Magikarp Pass was an ally to Regigigas' rampage, but our role in the fighting was minimal. This is where the story becomes familiar."Kota:It is tough to tell for sure at this distance, but it begins to dawn on you at this point that some of the metal decorations on the body of Crocus resemble emblems of Regigigas - images banned in Battlescar for obvious reasons. Indeed the next part is quite obvious, as it is the history drilled into the head of almost every human from a young age. Lugia descended from the heavens to lead the fight against the demon hunter's unjust purge, and wound up sealing Regigigas below the earth with a powerful ritual that burnt off most of the divine deep one's strength and trapped it on the mortal realm. From there, Lugia decided that if the deity of humanity was stuck with mortals, its chosen mortals would be made top of the food chain; With a massive army of humanity behind it, the newly proclaimed 'divine emperor' constructed an empire by the sword. "When Lugia reached what was once the Eastern Empire, it was faced with a conundrum." Crocus picks back up, "Both north and south branches of the Jiang Dynasty were willing to swear fealty to the new Empire without bloodshed, but only so long as Lugia acknowledged their bloodlines as the true heirs to Jiang. Seeing as Magikarp pass had been technically aligned with Regigigas, and not even a god emperor wanted to wage war against the wicked black knights, Lugia choose to throw its lot in with Spade, and attempted to lay siege to Magikarp Pass"
A look of pride again returns to the sandstone face of the speaker, "At that time, Magikarp Pass was ruled by Stone Parent of Lightning, the spirit thief who had taken the form of Raikou from Ho-Oh, and was known as a great military strategist. Under this ruler, Magikarp Pass was able to align with several Orcish factions including the Blue Front, exploit their avantageous preference towards Rock Pokemon, and depend upon the peerless engineering of the Timeless all to keep Lugia out of the mountains for several decades. Defeat came not in battle, but as an accident - The Stone Parent of Lightning allowed the Orcish Witch Clubjaw to experiment with the Ageless Sands, the ancient crystal which was key to both the Magic and reproductive cycle of the Timeless. In her tinkering, Clubjaw accidentally contaminated this ancient gem with demonic energies, weakening my people, and damning us to a slow death by preventing the construction of new Timeless."Akileija:You spot tiny sparks flying from Crocus' clenched fist as it speaks about the triumphs and mistakes of the very being you suspect they might actually be. The strange disembodied voice of Crocus Castrum falls into a flat monotone as they begin to wrap up the lecture. "We knew that the corruption of the Ageless Sands would spell the eventual defeat of Magikarp Pass, so we chose to promptly negotiate surrender from a position of relative strength, before Lugia could figure out the extent of our troubles. The deal we reached was as follows; The southern Jiang Dynasty would maintain control of the farmland south of the mountains, as well as the major trade city of Quin's Keep. The rest of the Kingdom would be rewarded to Bo Dynasty, a bloodline of minor nobles from the Crucible who had secretly kept the worship of Lugia even when it had been illegal under the laws of Regigigas. The Stone Parents were forced to submit to the castration of their organic forms, a fate inflicted on all spirits of Ho-oh who ever surrendered to Lugia, but were otherwise allowed to continue holding important positions within the government of Magikarp pass. Most of the Timeless have since forgiven Lugia and come to terms with their fate."Akileija and Kota:It is quite apparent to both of you that Crocus does not count itself amoung the timeless who have 'forgiven and come to terms'. There is a deep simmering resentment towards the emperor in the soul of the being addressing you. Kota:In addition to the above, You are fairly sure that in spite of its feelings towards the emperor, Crocus harbors no ill will towards you or your new wife. "The Bo Dynasty accomplished little of real significance in their time ruling Magikarp Pass," Crocus concludes, "This statement is more a reflection of the relative peace that has persisted since the Emperor's rise than it is any sort of indictment against the leadership skills of House Bo. They were able to make vassals out of the once proud southern Jiang bloodline after the later lost the low-lying farmland Lugia allowed them to keep to a series of minor wars about twelve hundred years ago. Their line ended in the middle of last month when the entire family was slaughtered by assassins during the eclipse. The crown was expected to pass to the Rugiabo bloodline, distant cousins of Bo and descendants of the God Emperor, but Lugia instead chose to crown the two highborn foreigners to whom I address this speech. To them I offer the following heartfelt wishes: May the prophecy prove wrong and Heatran remain dead. May you live long, reign wise, and die happy. May a thousand generations of your descendants live and rule under the watchful care of the Timeless."A shocked silence fills the hall, which is eventually broken by some of the forigen dignitaries in the other skyboxes chattering low amoungst themselves. Many topics that Crocus covered such, as the mixing of the races, depictions of Regigias as anything other than a mindless raging murderer, and the brutality of Lugia's rise, were of the sort that are barely brought up in most history classes and outright taboo in a royal court. Seemingly content with the disturbance that it has caused, Crocus Castrum returns to their seat with a smug grin. The next speaker is a woman in her late thirties or early forties with pale hair and an athletic build. She is adorned with well worn leather armor and several bandages around her head and arms. The markings on her outfit suggest that she is a commoner who has achieved high status within a guard or mercenary company. "My name is Shàonǚ," she announces with a friendly and nervous grin, "second-in-command among the Riverserpent Rangers, which is the taskforce assigned with keeping peace on the kingdom's roads, hunting down bandits, and enforcing royal hunting and fishing regulations. I'll give you all a second to digest the soapbox tirade of the timeless while I get some maps set up for you all!"Shàonǚ procedes to send out a pair of medium sized humaniod sloth Pokemon, who rush around the hall with boundless energy as they set up a pair of massive tapestries, each depicting a map. The first depicts the Kingdom from a bird's eye view. The second shows a cross section of your underground holdings.

Akileija's mouth wavered between amused grin and concerned line. She appreciated how the Timeless had stirred things up, and she'd never heard the story from quite that perspective before. But the fish-faced being's phrasing and tone seemed to suggest that he perhaps wasn't quite as firmly on the side of humanity as he claimed. [NOT FOR KOTA] And those gems...she remembered something about those gems, she thought. Something Posun had told her, or maybe something she'd read... Oh...oh. At a loss for even mental invective, her mind continued in turmoil. That explains some of what he said, but...if he's that old, and that powerful, then what does he think of us? Her breath caught for a second, and her lips pressed into a thin line as her eyes bored holes in the back of Crocus' head. Tearing her eyes away, she forced herself to relax, uncomfortably aware that she wasn't doing a very good job of it. She stared at the map, hoping to distract herself.

Kota did not need to feign interest in the Timeless' speech - while history had always been a middling subject for him, he felt it was important enough to know as much as possible about his new kingdom. Learning a bit more about the Timeless themselves in their own words was much more interesting, of course - their perspectives and temperaments were a mystery to Kota, one he found fascinating and potentially important as well if he was to make allies of them.
Yet, as Crocus' lecture continued, Kota leaned slowly leaned forward, disbelief barely masked on his face. His knuckles went white in their iron grip of his seat's armrests. The Timeless' words were beginning to border on blasphemy! Surely it was going off-script - he couldn't imagine the particular details Crocus was delving into had been on the agenda. Yet no one spoke against it, or even dared to interrupt. Of course - unlike the somewhat raucous affairs a courtly session might become back home, interruptions were improper. It was only Dàshà's fiercely warning gaze from her nearby box, somehow felt as an almost physical force, that held Kota's tongue from a righteous admonition. As Crocus wrapped up its speech and the Ranger began her presentation, Kota forced himself to visibly relax, trying to process the Timeless' words. All in all, he was unsure how to feel about it. Crocus' motivation had certainly been to shake up the court, judging by its smirk - but not, Kota felt, to provoke him personally.
The King-to-be spared a glance for his counterpart; Akileija seemed to have been put just as on edge as he by Crocus. Reassured that he wasn't alone in his reaction, Kota resolutely focused on the maps, trying to clear his tumultuous thoughts. The thought that, hopefully, some day soon, he would have a chance to survey his territories from above with his own eyes at leased eased him somewhat.

It is quite apparent that Shàonǚ is rather inexperienced when it comes to speaking at court. The ranger stands with a nervous smile on her face as her Pokemon set the maps up, and then causes a further delay in proceedings when it takes her the better part of a minute to wrangle her rambunctious creatures back into their Pokeballs. "I do appologise that somebody of higher birth, station, or speaking skills is not giving this lecture." She begins, "Bandits have been pretty brazen since the death of King Bo, and we have all been quite busy. My commander decided that I should give the speech as I needed to go to the crucible and get some injuries I had been neglecting attended to anyway.""Right... The maps then. Lets... start by giving you a key I guess." Shàonǚ says as if snapping back to focus. "Squares are major population centers, and four pointed stars are fortifacations. Anything Red belongs to Magikarp Pass, either directly or through a vassal. Purple means direct imperial control. Orange is under control of an ally, white a neutral government, and black belongs to our enemies or rivals. The red dotted line on the surface line represents the boundry of the kingdom as recognized by his holiness the emperor."Shàonǚ falls silent again and stares at the maps for a good period of time, as if deciding where to start. "Um... The land just Northwest of the Kingdom is called the Gyarados Plateau. Many wandering trainers, uneducated commoners, and even maps will say Gyarados Plateau is part of Magikarp Pass, but in actuality the land belongs to the Emperor these days, and we merely police it and allow it to participate in our Pokemon League as part of our tribute to Lugia."Flashing a nervous smile, the ranger continues. "The Gyarados Plateau, with its beautiful pine forests, climate, and lakes is famous for its hunting, fishing, hiking, and many castles and manors, which are kept as summer homes and a dumping ground for embarrassing offspring by wealthy families all over the empire. As a side note, if one is into architecture, the place is a living record of homes for the wealthy and paranoid across all imperial cultures dating back to just after Heatran's Detonation. I am told the new monarchs are to inherit Castle Milotic, the Gyarados Plateau retreat of House Bo, but the place is a wreck though; The last king started a remodel of the place when I was a little girl, and never got around to finishing it."Shàonǚ confidence begins to build as she continues onto the lands of Magikarp Pass proper. "Southeast of the Gyarados Plateau is the Magikarp Plateau, which is sometimes called the Lower Plateau. The Magikarp Plateau is the heartland of Magikarp Pass, and home to much of the Kingdom's population and wealth. Much of it is farmland - the rocky soil is not good for most food crops, but the climate is perfect for many kinds of spices and narcotics which are exported at a high price. Many families own a few Mareep or Skiddo to supplement their diets, but much of the food in this kingdom is imported."Pointing at a thin red line, the Ranger gets into the meat of things. "Quin's Road is the major route through the Lower Plateau, and following it will take you through the kingdom's three largest towns. Most land traffic into the Kingdom picks up the road at Quin's Keep, the only true city in the land. The Keep is famed for its markets, customs house, and great wealth; Not only does all traffic crossing the Magikarp Mountains have to pass through town, but it also serves as the primary entrance to the under-lands. The Keep is ruled by Lord Governor Jiang Zhuān, who is more famous as a Pokemon Trainer than he is as a leader - in reality power there lies with his regent Wąż, a brilliant commoner who is one of the main investors served by the Caravan of Clear Sk-"Shàonǚ is abruptly cut off by a loud course of boos and jeers upon the governor and his regent. Somebody even throws one of the wax program tablets at her from out of your field of vision. Kota:You note Dasha frowning in her box as the mere mention of her husband's name elicits a chours of jeers.
You also spot a few more wax tablets thrown at a young woman sitting in the chairs behind the throne which are typically reserved for member's of a Kingdom's Pokemon League. You suspect her to be the step daughter that Dasha was speaking of yesterday. Just as the jeering begins to subside, a large man in ceremonial gold armor rises from his seat and storms the stage to an uproar of applause. The newcomer exchanges some harsh words with the ranger, before violently shoving her off the stage, which elicits a mixed but fairly positive reaction from the assembled audience. "Do pardon the disturbance, that low born woman was out of her depth and station. I shall take over her briefing before moving on to my own," the newcomer begins, "I am Dūjūn Qīn Huá, commander and chief of the royal mili-"Before he can continue, the commander-in-chief dives off the stage to dodge an Ice Beam fired by a Nidoqueen sitting behind the throne with the members of the Magikarp Pass Pokemon League. A gasp rises to fill the hall as the man sitting next to the Pokemon, adorned in the purple and gold robes of a league champion, rises. The champion is at once a fierce and pitiful sight. He is a tall man with piercing eyes that scan the room with clear and undisguised anger - most of the room recoils in fear when the eyes look their way. As frightening as his eyes are, however, they also betray the bloodshot haze of heavy intoxication; Your champion's robes are covered in stains, and he leans upon a heavy gold staff embedded with a large and unusual black and white crystal to keep his balance. The champion takes his time half marching and half staggering to the throne, before throwing his free arm across the backrest to further support himself and yelling "The Champion Sits the Throne!" into the shocked silence of the hall. Kota:You recognize the Champion's face from 'The Index of the Overworthy', a list of scholars banned from participating in the industry and education of Battlescar for fear that they could reverse engineer national secrets from even what little outsiders are allowed to see or experience.
In addition, you are fairly confident that the gem in his staff is an Astrologer's Stone, an item that many skilled chemists spend their whole lives trying (and often failing) to produce. Such a stone is said to empower a trainer to Mega-Evolve any number of Pokemon in rapid succession, while also granting highly localized control over night and day. "Do you fuckers think you can pull one over on me!" He yells, "I'm wasted. I'm not blind or stupid. Whoever wrote this program is trying to bait our new monarchs into doing something dumb! Make them look like fools! You got the rabble rousing timeless, the unpolished commoner she-ranger who was all but guaranteed to be interrupted by our misogynistic tight ass commander-in-chief, followed by way-to-fucking-much speaking time for the drunken loser champion! Its a damn set up! I'm not blind or stupid."The champion then turns his gaze towards your box and points his staff in your direction. "Prince, Princess, Don't fucking worry. I'm the only one who is going to be a fool today. Me and the fucker who put together the program that is... once I find them out. You two are safe. Kiss or at least shake hands, as sovereign of Magikarp Pass I declare you two legally wed. I also legally declare you sovereign king and queen... as of sunset tonight. I'm going to do you a favor first and try to punish whoever is trying to make an ass out of you before throwing you both into the deep end."All eyes in the room turn to the box to see how you react to the Champion's ranting decree.

Akileija hissed audibly as the pompous gold-armored rockhead shoved the Ranger off the stage, half-rising from her chair as her hand went to where her sword would be. Barely a split second before she decided to express her rage, a hand on the railing almost as if she were to vault over it, the Nidoqueen's Ice Beam disrupted the commander's speech, and her breath caught in surprise. Her brow furrowed in concern for the Champion as she slowly returned to her seat, her eyes locked on him.
Well. This is...not what I expected from a reigning Champion. The last portion of his rant finally reached her brain, and she jolted in her seat, eyes drawn involuntarily to the slim man occupying the seat next to her. She was rather irritated at the slightly lost expression she felt forming on her face. So he expects me to speak...? Maybe I'll do better following up from Kota.

Intent on Shàonǚ's refreshingly straightforward presentation, Kota scowled momentarily as the crowd turned against her. So much for his worries about impropriety. He'd been warned about the Governor's unpopularity, but hadn't expected it to be quite so extreme. Lowborn the Ranger might be, and a bit awkward facing a crowd of nobles, but the information she was presenting was valuable. And Kota cared more about the fact that she had no doubt earned her position through skill and merit, rather than coasting on highborn connections. He didn't miss Akileija's reaction to the General's demeaning takeover... one he'd seen many times in his siblings, which he had plenty of experience forestalling. Out of habit he almost reached for her sword arm as he stood, but diverted the motion in time to instead raise his hand and call for silence -
And was beaten to the punch by an Ice Beam.
On instinct Kota almost transformed; but no, today, in this moment it was important his subjects see him as a man, not a Spirit. For a very brief moment his eyes flashed a fierce emerald, and then a deep breath, and his body and expression were rigid as the Champion spoke. Despite the man's drunken countenance, Kota knew better than to underestimate him - or dismiss his words as a lush's rant. Even in Battlescar, the Magikarp Pass Champion was reputed not just for his prowess in the League, but for his shrewd brilliance. While his judgment was undoubtedly impaired, Kota was less sure that drink had done much to dull his intellect.
A pointed silence enveloped the room as every face looked to their new monarchs - and Akileija's eyes turned to him, uncertain, searching. His hopes for her political competence fell a bit - yet, he supposed, this was a very unexpected situation. Certainly not one either of them had been prepared for. And it was a bit heartening that she trusted him at least far enough to rely on him here. Hopefully that was also tacit permission for Kota to speak for her, or she was about to be very unhappy with him.
A Prince of Battlescar must be able to think - and speak - on his feet.
A King of Magikarp Pass must strive to be better even than a scion of Battlescar.
"Champion Shi," Kota began. His voice rang clearly through the Hall, carrying the certainty of one accustomed to authority. This was a voice that would not tolerate unwarranted interruption. "We thank you for your commendable loyalty to the throne. A noble act, to sacrifice one's dignity to preserve our own." Kota's tone held no hint of mockery towards the Champion, but turned reproachful as he gestured with his wax tablet towards its brothers now littering the floor. "Or at least, what little dignity remained to these proceedings. I admit, highborn of the Pass and esteemed neighbors - I feared I would find this court stodgy and suffocating compared to that of my former home. Yet today I discover the leadership of Magikarp Pass treats it more like a theater than a court." He wore cold disappointment openly on his face as his volume rose ever so slightly. "I expect more than the jeering and tantrums of a schoolyard from the people upon whom this nation's future rests. I know you are capable of better, or Magikarp Pass would not be the prosperous kingdom so famous across the Empire that even the most remote commoner has heard its name. I understand that we are outsiders to you. I did not think you would respect us so little that you would turn our coronation into a farce."
Kota held a hand out towards Akileija, hoping she would understand the cue and take it to stand with him. "I cannot say yet what our reign will be like. What kind of King I will be. I have a lot to learn about Magikarp Pass yet - we have a lot to learn about each other." His words were directed to the assembly, but at the last his gaze darted towards the Princess almost imperceptibly. "Today, I ask only that you treat us with the same respect and decorum you expect your King and Queen to grant you. And in the days to come, I earnestly believe we can make such respect more than an act." He paused for the first time since he began, releasing Akileija's hand. "I can't say I personally put much stock in prophecy. In Battlescar, we prefer hard facts and empirical evidence over conjecture. But whether or not we are harbingers and shields against an encroaching doom, I intend to build a stronger foundation for this country upon which its future security can rest unquestioned. Such a foundation requires not just respect, but mutual trust and a willingness to adapt. That foundation begins here, today, in this room. It will require the considerable skill, experience, and resources all of you can bring to bear. That which has already made this country strong will build it into something even greater. This I swear to you."
Kota's eyes locked with the wavering gaze of the Champion once more. "Honored Champion, you've made a weighty accusation. Yet it certainly seems like speakers and gallery alike have less than a smooth transition of power in mind today. This is an accusation we cannot and will not ignore. Though I'm curious-" His voice and eyes gained a sudden sharpness. "What manner of foolishness do you presume this conspirator hoped to provoke from us?"

Kota's speech draws some polite applause, but also some murmuring and whispers. A look of abject terror spreads across Shi's face. "I'd rather not discuss fucking rumors..." The Champion begins, "but for the last few weeks I couldn't go an hour without hearing about how the incoming monarchs are little more than hot headed and ill tempered children. The schedule makers might have hoped to prove those rumblings correct and provoke you to draw weapons or assume spirit form in anger. I thought they might be aiming to get you to prove yourselves unfit to lead and unworthy of the respect you ask of this court.""But I just... fucking realised.. they were up to something else, and might have succeeded. I'm so sorry. So Sorry." The robed drunk continues. "By cutting off the briefing, they denied you the information required to make an educated speech. The words you just spoke... they are blasphemous to many assembled here. Although some Timeless discourage this view, many in Magikarp Pass belive that what the Timeless have built here is sacred, and than humanity could never improve upon it. Even those who do not take the matter in such a spiritual sense will point to the fact that neither the Crucible nor Quin's Keep have ever been conquered - and those walls have been tested by the likes of Heatran and Lugia."Shi lets out a soft wail of despair before returning to your gaze, tears running down his face. "Not even the slaughter of the royal family - of my fucking family, was enough to shake most of these fools from their complacency. You... you have just based your entire reign upon an idea that almost everybody here will oppose... I'm so sorry."The Champion gazes across the lower gallery with a look of utter contempt in his eyes, but before he can continue his rant or do something even more rash, Crocus Castrum climbs back onto the stage and gives a short speech. "The Prince is no mere human. He is a divine spirit much like myself, and as such he transcends your mortal spirituality and taboos. If he is confident that he can tamper with what my people have built, he has my full support. If somebody nefarious has abused my outspokenness, both him and his wife have my apologies as well. Champion, I suggest you allow our new leaders to receive their artifacts, and then adjourn this meeting of the court. I agree that this session has rapidly become a farce."Shi nods, before doing his best to overcome his tears and speak with authority. "L-ladies and gentlemen of the assembled court, I give you the man and woman who will be your rulers as of sundown tonight! Prince Kota and Princess Akileija!"With a rumble, your box begins to lower itself slowly along the wall. As it reaches the floor, the railing lowers, and a pair of knight in armor seemingly made from rock escort you up to the stage. --- Per the program, Akileija's advisers are first to approach your position one at a time to speak and present their gifts. Rugiabo Pòsǔn, a stout and terrifying woman who is missing an eye and covered head to toe in hideous burns speaks first. Kota and Akileija:You both notice a distinct tension in the room as Pòsǔn approaches. It is apparent that this woman makes the assembled court nearly as nervous as the Champion does.
Before she speaks, the intimidating woman stares Champion Shi down with her single eye. The Drunken trainer returns the gaze, but only after beckoning his Nidoqueen to his side. After several seconds they both break off the stare down. Kota:In addition, you note that the scars on this woman are all old burns. It would appear that at some point she was engulfed in flames and survived. "M'lady," the knight begins pulling out what appears to be a strange Pokeball, "The Breath of winter would like to present you with this, one of the twenty Undead Eating Orbs. This artifact can capture the undead, dispose of them safely, and convert the energy holding them together into various useful boons for its owner. Typically such an artifact is given to a greedy or power hungry individual my order would like to make a knight out of, and although we acknowledge that it is unlikely you need such selfish motivation to protect your populace, we feel it is important that you grow as strong as possible in case the prophecy proves true."Pòsǔn allows Kota a good long look at the Orb before handing it over to Akileija. It appears to be made of some sort of blue metal, and covered in gears and other moving parts made from bronze. Kota:Your are fairly sure the blue metal is Winter's Silver, a super lightweight copper and aluminum alloy with anti-undead properties. The exact formula is unknown to all save a few elders among the Blue Knights, but is rumored to require the blood and/or feathers of an Articuno to produce. Shā, a woman who could be Akileija's body double if not for hair color and muscle mass, is next to present. "I spent the last month or so with my cousin, your new queen, brushing her up on the hobbies of the local nobility on behalf of the Guild of Tutelage. During this time I learned of her love for stories, so I took the liberty of writing guild HQ and requesting an artifact ripped straight from the storybooks. The guild masters, taking into account the historic circumstances of my cousin's reign, obliged, and sent our Queen the Broach of the Gentleman Knight!"The lady produces a small jewelry case, and shows Kota the contents before handing it over to his new bride. Inside is a small and seemingly unremarkable gold shield-shaped broach depicting a fencer's sword, a lance, and a crossbow. Akileija:As it so happens, you have in fact heard of this broach before.
The Gentleman Knight, a wandering warrior who lived in the early days of man, is considered a founder of both the Guild of Tutelage and the Questing Blades. During his travels he codified many social rules and norms relating to honorable competition, highborn gatherings, love, and courtship.
The Knight eventually met his end when he attempted to best an Orcish witch queen, which spurred the three woman who loved him most to put aside their differences to avenge The Gentleman Knight, retrieve his body, and ensure that his soul was not misused. After much hardship and adventure, the three woman accomplished their first two goals, but discovered that their lover's soul was already far too damaged to make it safely to any known afterlife.
One of the three heroines, a half-elf trained in the elven tradition of white witchcraft, decided to improvise, and forged the Knight's soul into the legendary broach. From there most versions of the story state that the three woman wound up killing each other over possession of the broach, but your favorite version has the half-elf cursing the trio so that their souls might join the knight's within the broach after death; The trio would then go on to have individual adventures, with each woman, in the words of your brother, "Dying in the commission of a heroic act, while still young, beautiful, and pure. Earning for herself an eternity with her true love within the broach, aiding great heroes across the generations of humanity."
The broach is said to be able to generate weapons made from the Gentleman Knight's Soul, and gain additional powers as said soul becomes more closely aligned with its owner through acts of noble competition such as duels, jousts, or hunts and by socializing with members of the knightly orders." The last of the queen's advisers wears the blue cowl and gi of the Hyacintho Nocte, the elite shadow guardians of the Blue Daughter cult. In his hands is a large sack, from which is produces a stunning leather saddle that is trimmed in gold and bejeweled with tiny bits of various evolution stones. "You will get a kick out of this, Aki-Flower. It is called a Saddle of the Guardian Steed, and allows a rider to share in the abilities of her mount. The cult commissioned a handful of these as prototypes, thinking that children who need to escape a bad situation could ride and better defend themselves with the moves of their steed. The project was of course canceled when it came to light that most vulnerable children do not know how to ride, and that it would be too expensive to produce such a saddle for every orphan or boarding student in the empire. The Cult wishes you best of luck in both ruling your new kingdom, and making the most of this saddle, but I know you wont need it. We came up together. You are as a sister to me. I know what you are capable of, and how difficult you are to stop."The Ninja hands the Saddle off to its new owner, before turning his attention to Kota, dropping his cowl, and stareing at him intently with piercing green eyes. "Prince... It has been awhile, hasn't it? I am told the saddle is even more effective when the creature mounted is a spirit with human skills to pass along. You should give your wife a good ride sometime and test that out!"The speaker's words draw laughter from the gallery, and go a long way towards reducing the tension in the room. Kota: As the Ninja speaks, you can't help but find something familiar about his voice, but it is only when he drops his cowl to look you over that you recognize him. Kazmir spent a semester at the university almost two years ago, as training in architecture is a requirement to join the Hyacintho Nocte, and during that time he proved to be a major thorn in your side.
He first rubbed you the wrong way by becoming a toady and snitch for the deplorable Dean Tepth, and after you called him out for it, Kazmir began to take personal interest and pleasure in driving you batty. With a silver tounge, the lowborn ninja trainee could talk circles around you, often getting you to lose your temper or say something foolish in public.
The worst humiliation came about a week before Kazmir wrapped up his studies in Battlescar. The Ninja began to boast that you were so weak of a trainer that he could beat your Metang with a poison type. Although by this point you knew enough about Kazmir to suspect that he would have something up his sleeve, the teasing eventually reached the point where you felt you had no choice to accept the commoner's challenge.
The Battle took place in front of your entire class, and was, of course, over before it could begin. It turned out that Kazmir owned a Gengar, which he was somehow able to keep a secret for the entirety of the semester. Sentinel put up a decent fight of course, but was quickly dismantled by powerful ghost moves. Kazmir's induction into the Hyacintho Nocte took place at the university a few days later, and although you did not attend, word reached you that he had been given the call sign 'Princebane' in honor of the humiliation he dealt out to you.
You had hoped that you would never have to see Kazmir again, and find the fact that he is friend and adviser to your wife to be fairly disturbing.

Kota waited until their box settled on the floor, then held out a palm to forestall their knightly escort for a moment. "As I said, I have much to learn about Magikarp Pass," he declared over the low murmur that still rippled across the gallery. "I will not apologize if I have offended anyone. I believe you're made of sterner stuff than that. In any case," he gave a long, measured look to Crocus before continuing. 'Much like myself'..? Was this being one of the very Spirit Thieves it had spoken of? If so, it was older - and possibly wilier - than his most generous estimates had been. "Perhaps it is sometimes necessary to speak of blasphemous things.
"Still, I do not intend to begin any sweeping projects without the input of the locals. And I am certain the Timeless will intervene if they feel I might endanger or compromise their existing infrastructure.
"...That being said." Kota stretched out both arms to envelop the crowd. "I may be an engineer, but the foundation I spoke of is not one of stone and steel. It is one of strong hands, clasped together; sound minds and willing hearts, bent towards a singular purpose. It is you, all of you, and all the people whom we are put in a position to protect, who must become the solid bedrock our Kingdom stands fast upon. No matter its height, an unmanned wall is as good as paper." With that, he gestured for their escort to approach and the ceremony resume.

Kota's words elicit a fair amount of genuine applause from the gallery. Hopefully he has dodged a bullet. --- The first of Kota's advisers approaches empty handed. She appears to be a scantly clad elf, but a good portion of her body is made of brass rather than flesh. With each step she takes, a small pneumatic 'whooosh' sound echos through the hall. "I am designated Elguard-F33, and I have been modified and trained by the Anvil to serve as the ideal physician. My specialties include trauma surgery, augmentation, and traditional elfish cures. The Anvil has indeed sent the esteemed King Kota a gift, but it is sadly too large to easily present in this great hall."The elf briefly turns to survey the gallery, before spinning back around like a top to flash Kota a grin. "As we speak, my oppratives are install a Mark V elemental edition augmentation and research station in your personal quarters. As the name implies, this station, aside from providing the tools needed to safely build, install, research, and design augmentation parts, has the ability to imbue common augmentation parts with elemental energy extracted from Pokemon remains. It has other functions as well, which you can read in the included manual. I do believe that it is worth noting, m'lord, that you are the first person outside of Prince Geno's inner circle to be given one of these workstations."Kota's next presenter has the robes and rail-thin look of a Righteous Force Monk. He glides gracefully up to the stage, before indulging in a low bow before the newlywed royal couple. "Blessings upon your marriage and reign, lord. As I have been led to understand, Kota, you have little time for and interest in spiritual pursuits. I do advise you, however, that as a spirit, the external realms are more real to you than most, and as a monarch, the beings who dwell in such places may be interested in doing business with you."The Monk reaches into a pocket within his robe, producing and unfolding what appears to be a bright multicolored felt hat in the shape of an elaborate crown. "It takes decades of dedicated practice for a spirit to learn how to travel to or communicate with other realms, but the Righteous Force feels that there may not be time for you to learn these skills. By wearing this, the Crown of Realms and Dreams, while you sleep you may hold court for otherworldly visitors in your own mind, and project your senses and image into other realms so that you may explore and negotiate the vast cosmos. If Heatran is to return, the gods themselves may take an interest, and we would be fools to ignore them completely."Akileija:You have heard of this artifact before. Stories say it is kept in a Righteous Force temple called Nightmare Peak deep within a terrible and undead infested forest beyond the borders of the empire. Many heroes have sought the crown out in hopes of receiving divine counsel to aid in their quests, and a handful have even had their adventures, and lives, cut short searching for Nightmare Peak.
All that said, you hadn't imagined that the Crown of Realms and Dreams would look so silly. Akileija:You also, to your dismay, recognize the Monk from the landscape painting of your parent's wedding ceremony that hangs above your father's throne. Archpsion Jie was a friend and confidant of your mother in her youth, and pen pal well into her married years. You know only a bit about him - He was supposidly trained in the psychic arts by Lugia itself, and supposedly completed a handful of highly dangerous spy missions for your father.
What concerns you, however, is that according to a few letters sent between your mother and the Archpsion that you managed to intercept shortly after discovering your spirit form, Jie was a major proponent of keeping you locked up in your room 'for your own good.' If he was giving such advice to your mother, you fairly sure he is not somebody you want in your husband's inner circle. Kota:You catch Shā, your wife's cousin and adviser from the guild, displaying a profane hand gesture and mouthing a curse in Archpsion Jie's direction at a moment when she thinks nobody is watching her. You are fairly sure the old Psion notices the display, but he fails to give any visible reaction or acknowledgment. A chours of boos again fills the hall as Kota's final adviser, a woman in her late twenties dressed in the full regalia of a Wounded Walls Scholar, approaches the stage. The boos quickly die off when the champion advises the gallery to "Show some fucking respect" before he has to hurt somebody. The scholar introduces herself as Professor Dàshà, and reads the following statement off a blood red wax tablet. "The university acknowledges that conflicts of interest exist between its agenda, and the agenda of the Kingdom of Magikarp Pass. In an attempt to give King Kota a greater suite of problem solving tools, and to try and fill the large void left by the death of Provost Tóngqíng, Daughter of King Bo and Wife of Champion Shi, The University proudly offers the new king the title of Provost of the Eastern Mountains. The office offered shall give King Kota full control over and responsibility for all University activities in and under the Kingdoms of Magikarp Pass, Gyarados Falls, and Spade. Should he accept, we proudly present Tóngqíng's Arc-Rod to Kota as his badge of office."Dàshà produces a plain steel rod with an ivory handle, and kneels before her nephew to present it to him. "Should you decline the office, the University will find an alternate artifact for you as soon as possible." She concludes. Kota:An Arc-Rod is a powerful weapon and tool given to important University Dignitaries. It can generate bolts of flame and molten metal, which can be lashed like a whip, fired like a gun, or carefully manipulate with extreme dexterity and precision.
Although at least somewhat effective against all targets, the Arc-Rod is most devastating against inorganic beings such as those made from Rock, Ice, or Steel. On the other hand, however, it also enables fast and effective repairs to be made upon such creatures. Kota:You note that Gyarados Falls, one of the nations you are being offered influence over, is marked as 'hostile' on the ranger's map, which still looms above you. You actually believe you can recall at least one of the causes of the conflict:
Gyarados Falls seeks, with the university's help, to build a tunnel under the mountains and challenge the trade-route monopoly held by your new Kingdom. You are fairly sure your nation is the aggressor in the conflict, and has been diverting rivers into construction sites, enforcing a trade embargo, and assassinating engineers to stall the project.
Akileija:You note the tears begin to once more flow down the Champion's face as your husband is offered the Rod of his Dead Wife. When he thinks nobody is watching, he briefly ducks behind the throne, produces a flask, and takes a good long gulp of whatever is inside.

(to Kota's pre-artifacts post) Accepting his hand, Akileija rose. Kota's words rang true, and - despite herself - she found herself admiring the way he managed to speak with formality, but with none of the oily half-truths she'd expected from her knowledge of politics. Her eyes swept the room as his words turned to...what had her teacher called it? Argh, the word had slipped her mind. Forcing her annoyance from her thoughts, she instead scanned the highborn assembled, looking for reactions - most especially annoyance or amusement. While it would be best for her to feign weakness - playing mute could lure in those who thought she had no words of her own - this hardly meant she should not gauge the opinion of her...new subjects. That would take some getting used to.
(to Akileija's artifacts)
Akileija smiled as Posun approached. Champion Shi's actions may have disrupted the court, but Posun's very presence unnerved them greatly. Good. If what just happened is anything close to normal around here, this place needs shaking up. Shi's staredown only widened her grin - the Champion should not be intimidated, no matter how intimidating Posun was, and it was good to see that despite his drunkenness he was not. Inclining her head in a nearly invisible imitation of a student-to-teacher (or, in the words of her old warrior-mentor Takeshi, metal-to-anvil) bow, she took the orb from Posun's scarred hands. "Kiitos, isoäiti," she muttered - barely loud enough for Posun to hear, only a breath. Thank you, grandmother - an honorific, not a literal display of family affection, but a statement of gratitude and respect. Quietly made, of course, but true nonetheless. Stepping back, she spoke more loudly and with a clearly formal note - "I thank you and the Breath of Winter for the gift, Lady Posun. May the power of the orb help me to keep this kingdom safe."
Akileija gasped almost involuntarily as Sha named the brooch, eyes widening in disbelief and joy. One of her favorite stories - The Tale of Lord Konda, where a lone knight stood against everything the world could throw at him and challenged the gods themselves to save his love from the undeserved afterlife a curse had sent her to - had featured this legendary artifact. Supposedly, the Gentleman Knight had been so touched by Konda's actions that he had bound his soul-forged weapons to Konda's immense willpower; while this had nearly destroyed the Knight's soul, Konda had - barely - succeeded in his mission, and all because of the brooch. To be given such a legendary artifact...Akileija snapped herself out of her few-second trance, taking the brooch from Sha's hand and ceremoniously pinning it to her robe. Her fingers tingled as she touched it - was that the magic of the brooch, or just her own nerves...? Smiling widely, she nodded to her cousin, swallowed, and spoke formally: "I thank you and the Guild of Tutelage for the gift, Lady Sha. May the brooch inspire me to ever greater heights."
Akileija's pleased smile as she accepted the saddle, tucking it under one arm, turned to shock as Kaz continued. Kaz, why now?! A treacherous smile tugged at the corners of her lips, though, even as she spoke formally. "I thank the Cult for the gift. May the saddle help bear me to victory in all my endeavors." Her eyes twinkled as a mischievous note entered her voice, and she added "I would thank you too, Kaz, but for that little comment, you have just expended any goodwill you may have earned, and I hope it was worth it!" She attempted to huff and turn her nose up like a more traditional noblewoman, but the effect was ruined by a giggle that kept threatening to burst out.

"Do not thank me yet," Pòsǔn whispers, barely loud enough for Kota to hear, "there is much work for both of us to do if we are to ensure your strength, safety, and success."--- Shā offers a low bow and wide grin. She is clearly pleased that her gift has been so well received. --- "Your words cut deep, m'lady." Kaz complains with a look of clearly feigned innocence that rapidly morphs into a smile matching Akileija's own, before speaking again in a rhyming and near sing-song voice. "All I did was offer a suggestion, as to how you may both explore the artifact in question." Kota and Akileija:Kazmir's antics have the assembled gallery eating out of his hand. It is probable that the Ninja is working the crowd on purpose rather than blindly causing mischief.

Kota observed the presenting of his Queen's gifts impassively, though the Orb was fairly interesting and he hoped to convince her to allow him to examine it sometime. He began to bristle somewhat, however, at the flippant familiarity with which the final adviser addressed Akileija... and, hopefully, the crowd would assume his scowl of disdain was directed at the man's tasteless antics and not the man himself. Kota deigned not to encourage the ninja's childish teasing with a response.
Of course it would be Kazmir. Was Kota's reign doomed to be dogged by the bastard? The new King wouldn't put it past him to have manipulated himself into this position just to spite Kota further. It seemed sheer bad luck that he and Akileija apparently already had an existing relationship, one which Kota worried deeply about the nature of.
Yet, Kota was a different man than he'd been two years ago. He had taken the lessons Kazmir had inadvertently taught him to heart just as earnestly as the lectures of his professors and, he liked to think, had grown the wiser for it. And he was a King now, something he suspected neither of them had ever imagined would happen. Kota resolved at that moment that whatever dynamic evolved between them now, it would not be one in which Kazmir had anything to hold over his head.
And perhaps, if he was smart enough, he could find some means of restitution for his humiliation.
---
The Anvil's representative left Kota buzzing with excitement, and were it not so improprietous he was tempted to fly straight out of the Hall that very moment to begin delving into the manuals and examining the equipment. Battlescar had been petitioning and bartering for access to even a lesser version of such a workshop for years, to no success. To have personal, unrestricted access was a fever dream. "This gift will serve Magikarp Pass well in the years ahead," Kota managed solemnly enough. "I will ensure it is put through its paces."
Speaking of dreams. He couldn't help an involuntary snort of incredulity as the Archpsion presented his ridiculous-looking gift with the utmost seriousness that Kota had come to expect from the man. His awkward attempt to cover it up as a cough was unlikely to fool anyone paying attention. He half-expected Kazmir to make some pithy remark, but the man at least knew when his tongue truly ought to be held. Kota supposed he should expect no less from a ninja. He doubted Jie would have tolerated such an insult, regardless. Likely it was out of respect or fear of the Archpsion, and not any consideration for Kota or the ceremony's sanctity, that kept Kazmir silent.
Shā's covert reaction to Jie, however, brought to mind what he had told Kota of the monk's involvement in Akilieja's childhood lockdown. He had no idea how much, if anything, his Queen might know of this connection, and if so what her feelings on the subject might be. He was hesitant to consider approaching her about it, if the Champion had been comparing her temper to his own.
"Your wise words do not fall on deaf ears, Archpsion. I will treat this gift with every measure of seriousness it deserves," he offered solemnly once he'd regained his composure. "I look forward to your further counsel in such matters."
Even without the Champion's warning that someone was trying to provoke his temper, Kota would not have jumped to Dàshà's defense when the jeering began anew at her approach. Though he did appreciate Shi's surly admonition, his aunt was perfectly capable of defending herself - she was the most intelligent and competent woman he knew. If she truly felt offended, her position in both the University and the Pass' politics gave her plenty of resources to enact justice against any particular offender. Though Kota doubted she would feel the need to take any action; blood didn't run nearly so hot on your mother's side of the family as the royal line's was known to.
"I accept this weighty responsibility," he began once she trailed off from her short speech, curtly nodding as he grasped the Rod in both hands. (Mercifully, Kazmir didn't have the gall to interrupt with any additional off-color comments, though the King would be on guard in the wake of Dàshà's offer.) Kota took a breath to consider his next words carefully. Really, he saw no choice in the matter; he had always assumed such a title awaited in his future, though this was quite a bit further from home than he'd imagined. And the Rod was a tool he'd dreamed of possessing someday. But he understood this was a politically - and personally, in the Champion's case - charged circumstance. His voice rose loud enough to be heard across the Hall clearly once again. "And I will strive to honor my predecessor's memory. I am not blind to the dissension this office represents. While Magikarp Pass must always lie at the forefront of my priorities, I believe resolving this conflict of interest will not only serve to strengthen both sides, but be ultimately necessary in the face of any catastrophe that may or may not be looming in the future. I swear to forge a solution that will not leave this kingdom weaker by its making."

After the gifts are presented, the Champion raises his hand to silence the crowd, before flopping onto the throne as his Nidoqueen watches on in concern. "Alright! Show is over! EVERYBODY OUT! Prince, Princess, not you. Not quite yet... I'm going to summarize Lugia's letter real quick."Shi stumbles with the pockets of his robe for a few moments to produce and unfold a piece of paper. He begins to go over it even as the Gallery is still clearing out - he is obviously unconcerned with who hears him. "First order of business, his Holiness apologizes for not being able to attend today's proceedings, and extends an invitation for you to visit him at his Home in Swanna Lake, or at his court in the Unending City at your leisure. Your reign has his favor, and he is willing to provide assistance in your preparation for Heatran's return."The champion stumbles and mutters through the letter until he reaches the next important point. "Oh... a Decree. His Holiness says that you are to keep separate residences until he either has a better understanding of when Heatran might emerge, or he deems Akileija's spirit form strong enough to stand on its own... He fears what might happened if she is hindered by pregnancy when Heatran arrives." Shi blinks, and offers a sad chuckle "nothing actually explicitly ordering her to remain pure though. His Holiness has way too much faith in us humans at times..."Shi puts the letter down for a second to produce his flask and take a quick drink before continuing. "Okay. The last bit. Not a decree but strongly worded advice. He dose not want want you two spending too much time at court - you should be out in the world building your strength and reputations in preparation for Heatran... I reckon... lets see... I reckon that if we dump the petty criminal and bureaucratic stuff on others, the government can function so long as the monarchs sit the throne two days a week. Wont stop you from sitting more often than that though, might get to hear from people who can't get onto the schedule for the two days we know you are going to show up."Crocus Castrum speaks again before you can respond. "There is some precedent for the monarchs of this kingdom sharing power but not a bedroom. In such cases, the king and queen use the observation deck of the Timeless Sanctuary, the large sandstone building at the center of the crucible, for private meetings. It is an ideal place for that purpose, as the building is off limits to all humans save the monarchs without special permission. You might be overheard by some Timeless, but with the exception of myself, we are a cowardly and apolitical people who will keep your secrets without prompt or instruction."Shi nods, before doing a double-take and pointing his impressive gold staff at the fish faced timeless, sending it scurrying away. "WHEN I SAID EVERYBODY OUT, I MEANT YOU TOO, TROUBLEMAKER!" He pauses for breath, "But yeah. Yeah. That isn't a bad idea. I have open permission to go there myself, as my mentor is one of those timeless elders who lives in the Sanctuary's basement and emerges only a handful of times a century. So I have open permission, ya know? I'll meet you there tonight at sundown, when your reign starts, to formally surrender power and start your reign."--- Seconds After the Start of the Reign of the as-of-yet-unnamed Dragon Dynasty:(This thread is now open for free RP between Kota and Akileija. I'll set the first meeting up, and will describe the setting of future meetings upon request, but you two are free to meet and RP anywhere that both your characters could reasonably be. If I choose to introduce NPCs to any of your RPs, you are free to interact with them as you wish until they leave or the scene is concluded) The sun vanishes beneath the peaks to your west, marking the start of your reign. You can see the entire Crucible from your vantage point on the observation deck the fish faced one spoke of earlier, and it is quite the unique sight. You are in the exact center of a perfectly cylindrical valley, surrounded on all sides by peaks too jagged for most beings to navigate. Aside from the 'fortified tunnels' referred to by the map you were shown at court, the only way in or out appears to be by air; the valley walls have been smoothed and polished, making any sort of climb impossible. The sky above you contains several regiments of knights mounted upon winged rock types, the sort revived from fossils, on patrol in uniformed patterns. You can see more rock Pokemon stationed on the various roofs below you. You can understand how most airborne invasions would be at a heavy disadvantage. The crucible itself is a series of buildings seated upon a single massive foundation that dominates at least three quarters of the valley. The vast majority of it is built from the same gray rock that makes up the peaks around you, but the building you are standing on, which is the tallest save for the Royal Residence, is constructed out of sandstone. Also made from sandstone are a multitude of mobile parts below you; Sandstone bridges extend and receded between buildings, sandstone sidewalks move underneath the feat of pedestrians, and several buildings with sandstone bases seem to slowly crawl across the Crucible floor under their own power. Kota:Clearly the strange sandstone defies most of what you know about engineering and physics, but even most of the 'normal' stone buildings seem too big and complex for the material they are built from. The observation deck itself is a wide disk wrapped around the central tower of the sandstone sanctuary, which seems to be rotating very slowly. Functional telescopes, again made largely from Sandstone, line the railings of the deck, and four good sized rock gardens inhabit the interior of the deck. Three Timeless are kneeling in the rock garden furthest from you, seemingly engrossed in some sort of meditation or worship, but beyond that the only other people on the deck are your spouse (now dressed in their regular clothes), and the lemur-like Timeless who shared your box during the chaotic court session earlier today. A soft voice, almost a whisper, seems to rise from the observation deck itself. It takes you a few moments to notice that the lemur timeless is speaking. "I have been authorized by Champion Shi to surrender the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of the throne to you on his behalf, and to present you each with a stamp to make the royal seal."The figure approaches, offers a low bow, and hands you each a wooden stamp that can be used with hot wax to create the image of seven magikarp artfully arranged around a stylized picture of the Crucible. He then steps back to address you. "I am called Purpura Canis, and I have been named your steward by Lugia itself on account of my experience with Heatran. I was not consulted on the matter, and do have to warn you that Heatran's body was destroyed and its soul scrambled - As such I don't believe the Heatran I fought will have much in common with whatever Heatran you may face. That said, I have held almost every possible office of importance within the Crucible, up to and including yours, and as such I feel qualified for the position I have been given if you will have me."Purpura takes a few steps back. "I can try and answer any questions either of you might have at this time, or if you prefer, I could give you privacy so that you may get to know one another."

Dressed in a much more comfortable set of loosely hemmed men's wear (adjusted for her physique), Akileija surveyed the area as Kota entered. She'd found the deck herself a little before sundown - it wouldn't do to be lost in what was now her home, although it was difficult to find. She'd have to look for a proper map, not just wander and make educated guesses.
The lemur Timeless - Purpura - had arrived at roughly the same time as Kota, and she felt a hint of pride at her forethought. She graciously accepted the seal with all the metaphorical weight it bore, nodding to Purpura. "Your experience with - with the demon may be as you say, but your qualifications speak for themselves. I will gladly accept your stewardship." She tucked the seal into a small pouch at her side - whoever had delivered the clothes had also added numerous small pouches and pockets to attach to belt or scabbard. She suspected Kovarit (her eldest brother) had been involved in that, and she mentally vowed to thank him the next time she saw him. Drawing the string closed, she was about to politely dismiss the Timeless when a thought struck her. "Is something wrong with Champion Shi? I believe he mentioned officially surrendering power himself, and I had wanted to ask what he..." She paused, seeking the proper words. "Had discovered."

Purpura falls silent for a moment, before deciding to give an honest answer. "He said he has a suspect, and flew out of the Crucible an hour ago to 'gather more information'. Personally, I'd wager he is imbibing at a Tavern somewhere. Either way, he deputized himself with the full legal authority to investigate and prosecute 'the case of the toxic program' before giving up his power."
The Timeless shrugs, "My rule of thumb with him these days is to assume that if the task is going to take him more than an hour or two, that Shi will at some point give up and retire to his vices. Poor guy."
