Clay grins. He has absolutely no idea how magical creation Pokémon work, but a battle he can definitely do. "Now you're speaking my language! It'd be a pleasure. Name's Clay, by the way."
When the word "battle" comes up Fan scampers back over to Clay's feet and puffs up her chest, doing her best to look tough enough to take on a stone statue. She doesn't want to spend the day just being a glorified wilderness guide. Clay continues, "So what do you think, one Pokémon each? Or do you want to, I dunno, test out a bunch of different types on it or what?" That makes sense for a way to figure out what type it is, right?

"Well, I'd love to just spend all day testing many types on it, but I think a proper combat test is also in order, so... what's say 2 on 2? I have this other construct that is newer and I want to see how it does in a fight. I'm more of a researcher than a fighter, so I'll just hang in the back and offer directions to them. Sound fair? Oh, and I'm Kali."

"Two on two sounds good to me! Okay, Fan, show 'em what you got!" Clay only has so many types he can come up with on his team, anyway.
Fan leaps into battle with a fierce grin that mirrors Clay's. "Let's see if you can crack that shell - give it a kick!" Fan leaps into the air and aims two kicks dead center at the construct's chest in quick succession.

Fan seems to score two solid hits... except they go right through it. Apparently, this thing is another type of 'spirit', like the floaty sword and stump that weird swamp girl had.
"Oh neat, it's not even affected by those kicks! Probably for the best (for me), since they looked pretty strong! The flame on your friend's tail means its a Fire type, right? Try elemental attacks! Golett, try attacking it back now."
The quasi-spectral construct whirs into gear and sends a sudden punch towards a surprised Fan!

Clay and Fan make almost the same frustrated noise, about an octave apart, when Fan's feet go right through the statue."Really? Thought I was done dealing with these..." He shakes his head. "Friend of mine calls 'em spirits. Ran into some in the swamp out east. She knows a bunch about them. Her name's Rei, I'll introduce you if you ever come by the Guild."
The sudden punch catches Fan off-guard, and Clay winces in sympathy as the strike manages to reopen one of yesterday's wounds. The healers are going to kill him. Maybe he should've opened up with Flower or Sandy... "You're right, elemental attacks is how Rei said to deal with them. Lot of the ones I met didn't like fire... Light 'im up, sis!"
Fan somersaults back from the construct's reach, spitting fire as she does so.

The Golett doesn't seem too bothered by the fire, but the slight burn marks show that it at least did something.
"Hmmm. Got anything for hitting at range, Golett?"
The magical spirit-construct-thing throws another punch... which somehow extends outward to smack Fan right in the face! That's a new trick!
Shadow Punch cannot miss.

That last punch hits hard - and Fan's down and out. Clay makes a low, monkeyish sort of noise that sounds apologetic. Sorry, sis. Shouldn't have brought you into this... As much as she'd clearly wanted to fight, she was already beat up from yesterday and didn't have much endurance.
He takes a deep breath. "So fire doesn't work so great, huh? How about water then? C'mon, Sandy!" And here comes the Mudkip! Clay would really rather send Flower out, but her specialty's still fire, and he's not sure yet how these spirits interact with each other. Plus taking physical hits isn't her strongest point. "It's one of those spirits again - hit it with a Water Gun!"
Sandy hunkers down a short distance away from the Golett and spits out a jet of water.

Golett proves quite adept at dodging Sandy's water attacks as it leaps aside with surprising grace.
"Cool, it's pretty nimble for looking so bulky. Try something new, Golett."
Obedient to the last, it scoops up some mud from where Sandy's water gun hit the ground and throws it in her face.

Of course, throwing mud at a Mudkip is not very useful. Sandy looks more annoyed by the facefull of mud than hurt, even if he's left pawing it out of his eyes for a moment. Clay's grin returns as he sees how ineffective the attack is. "Oh, now you've done it. Return fire, Sandy!"
Sandy's happy to oblige, splashing mud right back at the clay soldier.

"Hm. Well that move didn't work. Try something else, Golett. Maybe hitting it physically again? That seemed to work on the last one."
Golett obliges, moving forward and slamming at Sandy with one of its arms.

Sandy backs away as the heavy fist slams into him. Clay winces sympathetically - that obviously has a lot more effect than the mud. "Try the water again!" He thinks he has half an idea what sort of Pokémon this Golett thing is, now, besides a spirit... and most of the things he can think of that would react like it has so far don't deal well with water.
"Kiiip!" Sandy gushes water at the Golett, hoping to hit it more easily from point-blank range before he starts backing off again.

"Whoa!" It's not that he's never seen that trick before - again, Geodude do it all the time - so much as that he wasn't expecting it. He's rather relieved when Sandy darts out of the way, tail waving.
"Stay on your toes, Sandy! Get another Water Gun in on him!" Clay's run out of different elements to try, and in any case as a two-on-two fight he doesn't want to spend too much time playing around. He glances up to explain to Kali as Sandy spits another jet of water at the statue. "I already know just smacking it won't work. Weapons, fists, whatever - goes right through 'em. Makes spirits a pain to fight, I can tell you. Biting them works fine for some reason, though."

The Golett collapses in a heap, its energy reserves depleted.
"Well, that's unfortunate, but at least I figured something out: It's weak against water. On the subject of 'most physical attacks don't work, but biting does', perhaps it's some sort of anti-spirit element that we don't know about yet?" She shrugs.
"Either way, a good start on learning more about this type of construct. Now to try out the other one..." She recalls the Golett into an Apricorn ball, then tosses out a second one. The new ball bursts open to reveal a blocky, pink and blue creature. It emits a harmless blue beam that seems to 'scan' Sandy.

Clay tenses when the bizarre new creature - is that supposed to be some sort of bird? - runs that blue beam over Sandy... and then blasts him with a second beam. That reminds Clay of the results of the duck's 'headache' yesterday - and much like the earlier attack, it's too much for Sandy. The poor Mudkip keels over with a squeak, and Clay's face falls as he recalls him.
"That's two. Guess you win." He shakes his head. "Good match, at least. Those things - what'd you call them, constructs? They're pretty strong."

"We've had a rough couple of days -" Clay gestures to his own appearance, particularly the frazzled hair from that massive shock "- but they'll come through okay. Need some time to recover is all." Time he feels kind of guilty about not giving them, now. But he shakes the regretful thought off to give her a less challenging smile. "Like I said, drop by the Adventurer's Guild in Saffron sometime. Rei'd go bananas, she's been studying these spirit things for ages. I think you two would get along."
He pulls out the little pouch he keeps his money in and roots around in it. "I'm supposed to pay up when I lose, right? Let's see, uh..." He mumbles to himself in noises that don't quite reach the level of human speech as he tries to remember how much he's meant to be giving up. Math is not his strong suit. "Think it's seven of these and three of these."

Once Rei's whipped up some of this food that helps Pokémon grow, Clay feeds some to Red Child and, with a bit of trial and error, discovers that he can burn bits of the food in Flower's flame. He hopes that will have the same effect. Then it's shopping time; Clay's unfortunate string of defeats has left him a little low on funds, but he at least manages to acquire one more apricorn ball - he supposes he'll need to go find someone else to challenge if he wants to earn some more cash. Or get one of the others to read him the mission list again and work on those. He should see if the Fire Branch has one...
But right now he wants to go find a new teammate while Fan and Sandy rest up! Preferably a tough one. On a whim he heads southward onto the plains again. If that environment produced a Pokémon as tough as Red Child, maybe it's a good place to look?
Mechanics: Fed Baby Food to Flower and Red Child. Bought one Basic Ball. Searching for a Wild Encounter to the south! Encounter 1 of 3 with Survival. Shiny roll: 9o_lMN_j1d1001d100
