Sandy squeals as those teeth sink into him. "Hang in there, buddy!" Clay chucks another Pokéball at the dog, trying to finally catch it.

It indeed refuses to stay in the ball, breaking out of the second after a few moment's struggle. Disoriented from the latest capture attempt, the fire dog is knocked down by Sandy. It quickly tucks its feet under it and leaps once more at Sandy.

Aaaaand that's all three Pokémon that have gone down before the Growlithe's jaws. Clay growls at it directly now. Stay down, you son of a Poochyena.
He throws his last Pokéball at it, hoping this time it will stay in the ball.

Of course, the first thing Clay does once he gets out to Route 1 is get some exercise for himself and his Pokémon. Clay's gotten out of practice with his jumping and agility since he's been living in human places with their inconsiderate ceilings and rules about climbing on the furniture, so he's started incorporating more of it into his own routine again - as well as watching as his Pokémon exercise.
Somewhere in there, Fan wanders off for a little bit. Clay raises an eyebrow when she returns with something. Where'd you find that, sis? But, barring that little distraction, it's time to start looking out for things to do. Surely a route with this much traffic must draw some strong Pokémon.
Mechanics: Training time! EXP Training applied to Red Child and Flower. Agility Training applied to everybody. Fan uses her Pickup ability! Pickup roll: c4312HL91d20 Looking for a wild encounter here on Route 1! Encounter skill is Survival, 2 encounters/day. Shiny roll: 1d1001d20·1d100

As if in response to his desire to work on agility, Clay spots a little yellow Pokemon zipping through the legs of vendors situated along the road to the capitol, snapping up any food that drops before quickly moving on. It's so fast that Clay has to search a little bit to find it again every time he loses sight of it. Then he sees it dart back into the woods way off the road (the treeline has been cut back compared to Route 3).

Clay makes a noise that's roughly the simian equivalent of "whoa". His team leans toward speedy types already, which is a bit of a weakness in fact, but that yellow thing is pretty impressive even so.
He grins as he spots where it slips into the woods, and recalls his Pokémon - all except Red Child. He gestures to the Growlithe toward the treeline with a soft growl. Be vewy, vewy quiet. Follow that yellow thing. And he begins to sneak toward the trees with Red Child on his heels, hoping go creep up on the quick yellow Pokémon. Red Child is... probably sneakier than him.

Clay doesn't see it at first, but a quiet huff from Red Child gets his attention and the Growlithe makes a pointing motion with its body, allowing Clay to (eventually) spot the yellow mouse hiding its latest acquisitions in a stash nearby.

Clay grins when Red Child spots the Pokémon. Nice job. Now... you go that way, I'll go this way.
They split up to flank the speedy little mouse, circling in from opposite sides. Clay lets out a sharp bark. Now! Get it!
Clay darts in with a low leg sweep, hoping to trip the yellow mouse up and keep it from getting away; then Red Child charges from the other side with those formidable teeth snapping.

Pikachu Perception: HRtLTGEB2d6
Clay and Red Child rush into the clearing (which turns out to have multiple of the little yellow pokemon in it) and knock one down, where Red Child tears into it, spraying crimson blood everywhere. Oops. Maybe Red Child was a little overzealous. (Don't worry, it isn't dead, just very badly injured.) Most of the things scatter and hide, while a few of them send bolts of electricity at Clay and Red Child. Clay can't even tell which one is the one he followed in here, they all look so similar when they're trying to zap you.

This... is not going as well as Clay had planned. He makes an astonished noise as Red Child very nearly rips the mouse they went after apart. Fortunately for his ambitions to capture one, there are others. Unfortunately, there are several of those others and they take serious offense to the intrusion. Red Child's fur stands on end as he's hit with a bolt of lightning; Clay cartwheels away from another.
He doesn't like the looks of that one that didn't attack, though - it looks like it's planning something, and throwing off little sparks. So he bounds toward the tree it's occupying and leaps upward to swing his staff at it. Red Child, by contrast, focuses in on the one that zapped him, responding to its electricity with a spray of flame.

Pikachu #1 nimbly evades the spray of flames, and #3 gets a staff in its face. Which it didn't like. Sparks travel down the staff into Clay's arms, stiffening his muscles.

Three things happen in very quick succession - Red Child is hit with two more shocks, he goes down, and Clay is hit with the third mouse's massive blast of electricity. Already numbed from the shock that ran up his arms when he struck it, Clay has no hope at all of dodging; all his hair is standing on end (more than usual) and he's quite possibly smoking a little from the amount of power that coursed through him.
He grits his teeth, forcing his spasming muscles to obey him as he recalls Red Child. There's no way he can continue the fight like this; as much as he hates to give up, he's genuinely afraid he may get himself killed here. As soon as the Growlithe is back in his ball, Clay turns and legs it for the nearest edge of the clearing. He'll worry about whether this is the way back to the road later, right now he just wants to get away from the Pikachu nest. Once he's not pursued by angry mice with lightning bolts, he can worry about circling around back to the road. This attitude may come back to bite him if he finds himself running into something worse...

The angry electric mice spark menacingly, but do not pursue or attack further as Clay runs for it. Moving as fast as his spasming muscles will carry him, Clay makes it away from the nest of Pikachu. Once out of sight from them, and discovering he is not being chased, Clay takes a moment to give his muscles a rest so they'll stop spasming and screaming in protest at every movement. With that finished (about 5 minutes later), he can now take stock of where he is. Which... turns out to be the opposite of where he was hoping to go. He has ended up further into the woods. Crapbaskets.

Okay. Okay, he can work this out. He suspected this might happen, and generally viewed it as a lesser risk than taking a more direct route back to the road that wouldn't have gotten him away from the rodents as easily.
But Clay's lived in the wild for years. (This is, in fact, not the first time he's walked into a nest of angry Pokémon. It's just that usually he can count on the rest of the troop to be within screaming distance.) He thinks he can circle around well enough to get back to the road without hitting the nest again.
Just to be on the safe side, he brings Fan out. She makes a few concerned noises about the condition he's in, but he waves her off. I'll live. Keep an eye out for company, please, sis? He mostly wants her around for protection in case he runs into some other irate Pokémon.
He looks around for a moment to try and get his bearings, then sets off on a course that he thinks ought to arc around the nest and bring him back to the road.

Fan helpfully keeps you from stepping in a few Patrat/Rattata holes as you navigate your way back to the road. It's only a 10 minute hike, as you didn't end up as far in as you thought. Guess those Pikachu like to live on the outskirts.

Clay takes a break to lean against one of the trees on the edge of the woods once they're out, regardless of the sight a somewhat-charred young trainer probably makes emerging from the woods. He slumps to the ground with a sigh. This trainer thing sounded a lot simpler before the whole swamp thing. It seems like ever since being ambushed by mud in the swamp he's had a never-ending series of close calls every time he's run into wild Pokémon.
On the other hand, battling other trainers really seems to have gone better. And he could use a good, non-life-threatening fight right about now. So after scrubbing some of the soot off his face he'll pick up some lunch and start going looking for a trainer to battle. As busy as the road is surely there's someone out there who wouldn't mind a break.
Second of two encounters for today. Trainer roll: aNOfpG3h1d341d34

Clay stumbles upon some weird person poking at what looks like a little stone soldier. A... child-sized stone soldier. This thing is at least 3 feet tall, and is looking right at you. It even waves. The human seems oblivious to your presence.

Clay blinks in shock at the little stone statue waving at him. After a moment he waves back. Fan darts over to expect the little stone person up close, and Clay follows just to keep her from upsetting the apparently oblivious person checking over it.
Plus he's curious himself. "Hey there! That's an unusual Pokémon you've got there." He thinks it's a Pokémon, anyway. It's moving around, rocks that do that are usually Pokémon. (Clay has had unfortunate experiences with an angry Geodude.) "Don't think I've seen one like that before. What's it called?"
Fan prods at the statue curiously, partly in imitation of the human on the opposite side but mostly just out of curiosity.

The odd person (a girl, as it turns out) looks up.
"Huh? Oh, this is called 'Golett'. It's a magical creation from ancient times that I found in a really old room beneath Celadon Castle. It's a very special kind of Pokemon, though I'm not entirely sure which elements it comprises. It looks kinda rocky, but I haven't gotten it to use any Rock moves. Oh! Say, would you like to help me test its capabilities? You know, fight against it?"
