"Oh. Sorry, I dunno a whole lot about magic. Infernape don't really go for it. Took a long time to figure out I was even doing it."
He cocks his head curiously. "So do you just hang around here waiting for magic stuff or have you been in my bag for a while?" The idea of a Pokémon just hanging around his bag is kind of weird. Then again, he guesses it's not that much weirder than apricorn balls.

"Heh, well, you see, the thing is... I'm kinda stuck. I jumped in here when you were in the swamp last, and as it turns out, the enchantments on this book of yours are way stronger than I expected. It took all this time just to be able to wrest control of it enough to manifest like this."

"Oh, wow. That was like a week ago." Clay rubs his chin thoughtfully as he contemplates the situation. He reverts back to human language without really thinking about it - he hasn't actually quit vocalizing when he channels things, and trying to mimic Rotom's crackly accent is hurting his throat. "So how do we get you un-stuck? Do we just find you something else to jump into? I dunno where to find magic stuff, really, but I can look around. Maybe Rei can help, she knows a lot about ghosts and spooky stuff."

"I mean... I dunno. I've never been stuck before. Maybe just finding something else to jump to, like you said, would be enough? Oh, but then I'd need to be able to get out of here in the first place, which is the problem. I'd be happy if your friend could help, but I'm not sure if just knowing about Ghosts is enough unless she also knows a lot about magic or at least how this book works. At this point though, I'll try anything."

"Well, she knows more about either one than me, and she might know somebody who knows more. You mind if I carry you back? I know freaking people out is funny but flapping around takes up a lotta space indoors." He holds out his hand to catch the tome if Rotom does stop. Then he'll head back to town in hopes of finding Rei.

Clay angles out to the east, along the road to the swamp. Maybe today he'll finally run into another Fighting-type. He still has a vague impression he ought to have more of them, even if he's not as inclined to specialize as most of the branch.

Clay spots a small, somewhat muddy pond just off the road. Within it there appear to be several... worm-looking Pokemon? It's not one you're familiar with.

Uh-oh. He remembers puddles. Puddles are bad news, even if this isn't actually in the swamp and is big enough to be more of a pond. He looks into the water warily and squints at the wormlike Pokémon. "Just what are you guys?" he mutters to himself.

The Pokemon continue to swim around, minding their own business. They seem to be munching on weeds and grasses in and around the pond. A few are even sitting right at the water's edge.

They seem pretty harmless, really, though Clay thinks that if he dipped his feet in the water he might get his toes nibbled before they realized he wasn't a weed. Sitting at the water's edge surprises him, though; they look kinda fishy from closer up, he expected them to prefer to stay in the water.
He waves at the closest one cautiously, reaching out with his mind. "Hi there. How's it going?"
He's pretty sure they aren't the Fighting-types he's been looking for, but they're pretty interesting. Maybe he'll catch one anyway - if it doesn't fit in with his team he can always find someone it'll fit with better. Though how he's going to talk one into joining he's not sure; they don't really seem like adventurous sorts from here.

"Hello." The critter warbles. Its skin looks really wet and slimy. It continues to just hang out in the mud.

Clay vaguely wishes Sandy wasn't back at the guild; maybe he could draw the thing out a little more, one mud-fish to another. He cocks his head thoughtfully. "So what kind of critter are you? You look like a fish, but you're out here on the bank..."

"I'm a Barboach! I hide in the mud waiting for bugs to come along. Weeds are tasty too, though. Are you one of those 'human' critters I've heard about?"

"Yup, I'm a human!" Clay wonders vaguely why Barboach seems to have only 'heard about' humans, considering how close to the road its pond is, but it doesn't seem like the type to pay much attention unless it becomes urgent - and it's not like there are very many people on this road anyway.
Then again, it's hard to blame people for avoiding it. The only place to go is the haunted swamp. "Not a lot of humans, come this way, huh?"

"Not a lot, no. Fewer still stop to say 'hello'. Not that humans usually understand us back, but still. That's fine though. Plenty of other Pokemon to talk to around here."
Barboach rolls in the mud a bit to replenish it's slimy coat.

"Huh, really. Any Fighting-types?" he asks curiously. He doesn't seem to be having much luck finding them on his own, after all, might as well try asking for directions.

The little loach thinks for a bit. "Hmm. Not a lot here in the marsh, but a few that can become fighting types. Shroomish, Poliwag, and croagunk are the only ones who live around here. Most fighting types prefer mountains. Don't know why, but that's what Big Brother Whiscash says. If you really wanna meet a lot, try the mountains!"

The mountains are a long walk - pretty much up to Cerulean, either way, then west to Mt. Moon and the rest of its range, or east to the mountains he'd seen on the horizon on Cerulean's other side. Those are pretty much north of here, he guesses, but cutting cross-country through unfamiliar woods this close to the swamp isn't an appealing thought. Especially not when Rei and Tiki don't know where he's going. He's tried to be a little more wary about that ever since the incident with the Pikachu nest.
"Sounds like good advice! Maybe I'll have to take it. Big Brother Whiscash sounds like he knows his stuff." He hums thoughtfully. "You ever wanted to see the mountains yourself?"

"I've thought about it before, but if I stray far from the pond, I get all dried up. Might be cool to see other water Pokemon though. Or something other than the usual folks. They're nice and all, but you can only talk to the same pokemon for so long before you run out of things to say."
It twirls in the mud some more.

"Hm. Well, I hang out with a human school called the Adventurers' Guild. So I team up with Pokémon to go out and have adventures. I'm pretty sure you don't get dried out inside an apricorn ball, and if you're not right with me the Guild has a bunch of ponds to stay in. Three of my partners are Water-types - you'd like Sandy, I think - and you could definitely meet others, too."
He hasn't really watched Missile interacting with other Pokémon when he's not around, so he's not sure how well the Carvanha plays with others, but Sandy is coolheaded enough to get along with pretty much anybody. Of course, who he has with him is Tavi, but he's pretty sure other Pokémon find Tavi just as confusing as he does.
"And I go all sorts of places - I'm actually from the mountains! And I've seen the big wide open plains, and the ocean, and there's still plenty of places left to explore. Think you'd like to come along?"
