Rei's brow furrows as she hears the news, and before she can react, Tiki is off to help. She looks down, thinking about what to do as she feels Holly scoot closer. Rei blushes slightly, thinking to herself this night is just making certain things worse. She stands, and looks to Holly.
"Holly, lets go see how they fix things. I'm sure Clay tried his best, but it seems maybe she was a little sensitive to these things. Hopefully he or Tiki can repair it, the Mayor is very nice and I'd rather leave in better spirits than this. But I don't want to be doting on Clay and Tiki. So lets just go and keep our distance at first, you are sneaky, right? Is there ways you can help me?"

Tiki stays outside of the Mayor's place to also give Clay a chance to fix the situation.

Pounding louder seems to elicit a human response. An older woman (looks around 30-40) answers the door. Looming in the background is a huge, blue Pokemon with a large, red crest on its head. It looks a lot like a bigger version of one of Tiki's Pokemon as it flashes an impressive set of fangs at the group in a facsimile of a grin.
"Hmm? What's all this then? Shouldn't you youngsters be out there enjoying the party?"

Well. That's obviously what Clay heard moving around, and wow that's a lot of teeth. It's hard to blame Clay if that distracts him for a moment... but on the other hand it's kind of a relief that it isn't some rogue Pokémon breaking in and endangering her.
"Um, hi. Sorry, I didn't realize someone besides, uh, Mayor Kalani lived here?" Clay's not actually sure who to think this is - the Mayor's mom, maybe? Why would the Mayor live with her mom, unless she's younger than she looks? "I heard your friend there moving around and I was a little worried, hadn't seen him before. Hi there! No hard feelings, just a misunderstanding." He switches to a burbling water-type dialect for a moment to greet the large, toothy thing. Water-type is as good a guess as any - it's blue, after all.
"Anyway, um. I was talking with Mayor Kalani at the festival and I, uh... what's the expression?" He turns around and looks at Tiki behind him. "What is it you say when you said something really stupid? Something about feet? Oh, whatever." He turns back to the woman, shaking his head. "Anyway, I said something dumb 'cause I'm not good with words and she came back here and I wanted to apologize and see if she was okay."

The woman's expression shifts to one of confusion, then understanding.
"Oh, is that why she ran in here in tears? Don't worry, she's fine. She gets herself all worked up over things all the time. Especially when she was younger."
She smiles a bit when you get distracted by the enormous Pokemon behind her.
"That's just Gertrude, Kalani's best friend since she was little. Raised her from an egg, she did. Oh yes, this is Kalani's house, she is just kind enough to let her aging mother live with her."

Clearly Clay needs to stop assuming reptiles are male. But Gertrude isn't really important right now, at least not unless she takes a notion to use those teeth. Which he supposes is possible if she's attached to Kalani, but it doesn't seem like she's going to do so right at the moment.
He shifts his weight uncomfortably. "Yeah, I just... I don't exactly wanna get in the habit of making people cry. I was hoping I could apologize. She opened up to me and I got overwhelmed and said something dumb."

Kalani's mother chuckles slightly.
"Don't worry about it, young man. You're both young yet, so you're bound to make silly mistakes at times. I'm afraid you can't see her at the moment, as she's gone and fallen asleep. Between the excitement of the party and whatever it was you two spoke about that upset her so much, she wore herself out."
Gertrude seems to lose interest in you and wanders off.

Clay rubs the back of his neck and sighs. "Well, okay. Could you tell her something for me in the morning then? Tell her Clay says he's sorry, and if she still wants to see him more often he'll try to come and visit soon."
It'd be nice to be able to tell her himself, but after all, they have to get back to the Guild tonight if he wants to be there for the inspection tomorrow.

"Are you not staying in town tonight? The roads are dangerous at night, you know. I'll let her know, though."
Kalani's mother seems concerned that you don't plan on staying the night in town.

Clay gives her a confident smile. "Thanks, but I'll be fine. I've got Fan here -" He gestures down to where she's sitting by his side. Sadly, ever since she evolved she's too big to ride on Clay's shoulder - she's nearly up to his waist. "And I have three friends I'm traveling with. I wish I could stay, but I gotta be back in Saffron in the morning."
He doesn't actually know when in the day the inspection's going to be, but judging from experience, first thing in the morning is probably a safe bet.

"Oh. Well with that many friends around, I'm sure you'll be fine then. Have a safe trip and a good night, Clay!"

"You too, Miss." He sighs quietly when the door closes. So much for patching things up tonight, but it's not like he was gonna barge past Kalani's mom to try and find her, even if she didn't have a giant alligator backing her up.

It seems like barely any time at all has passed before Red Child is licking your face to get you up. Groggily, you try to swat him away, only for the Growlithe to decide that's not happening and drag you out of bodily out of bed.

"Gaaah, okay, I'm up, I'm up!" Clay growls. Around the time Red Child starts dragging him out of bed, he gives up and struggles into at least a sitting position, rubbing his eyes. Memo to him, no more late parties on days he needs to get up early.
"Thanks... I guess." Clay does his best to get himself cleaned up in the time he thinks he has, judging by the other trainers in the room, before sticking his head out into the main hall to see if things are starting.

Clay has enough time to splash water on his face and throw some clothes on before he has to make a beeline for the main branch hall ('affectionately' referred to as 'The Oven' by Branch Members). Quickly securing a spot in the weird lineup (it's not a single straight line, but multiple straight lines!), he waits for something to happen.
He's not waiting very long before Lady Ashandra comes out.
"Alright. You all know why you're here today. It's inspection time. I want to hear what you've been doing with your time these past few weeks. For your sake, I hope none of you have been slacking. Either way, we'll find out soon."
It takes some time for her to reach you, and during this time you hear all sorts of tales about tough battles, exotic locations, etc from the other Branch Members. Ashley apparently has been gone all this time as she went far, far to the south, across the ocean in order to find rare and powerful Fire Pokemon. A journey of at least a week by land/sea. Ashandra seems (as usual) most pleased with Ashley's progress. Eventually though, it's your turn. Time to stand up or 'fess up.

Well, that would explain why he could never find Ashley, if she seriously spent two weeks on the other side of that giant ocean. But now it's his turn, and he takes a deep breath. At least Fan's by his side, evolved now and obvious evidence of his own hard work.
So, time to explain what he's been up to. He talks about going up to Cerulean and the deal with the Guardian of Mt. Moon, and the fierce battle against the cunning Pokémon thief. He leaves out the stuff about the poachers for now - he's not sure whether Lady Ashandra would react as badly as Miss G to getting involved with the mess in the first place, but he's sure she'd be less than impressed with it not being finished off yet.
So instead he moves on to talking about exploring the southern plains in search of the giant Pokémon Tiki saw, fighting off a den full of Raticate, facing down a herd of Ponyta, and battling and capturing Tavi. And then, of course, there's the part where they explored pretty much every inch of Lavender Swamp, though once again he's got to avoid stuff there - Holly and her sister don't need the whole Guild to know about them, after all - but at least he can be proud of capturing a powerful Croagunk and negotiating a rare Farfetch'd to join his team. He focuses particularly on Flower and how well she bore up through the expedition; he remembers how skeptical Lady Ashandra had been about her. And of course there's a bit about the growth of his power to speak to Pokémon into strengthening them, which is probably one of the big things that kept his team going through the swamp. Finally he goes through the Pokémon he's captured, and while he has to admit his team's not as focused on Fire-types as much of the branch, they're pretty powerful and he'd be willing to test them against anything that came their way.

Lady Ashandra's near-permanent scowl makes it hard to read her. It's hard to tell if this is her normal scowling countenance, if she's upset you're doing so well (and possibly trying to hide it), or secretly impressed (and also trying to hide it). Then again, it could be something else altogether! After she finishes going through the others, she returns to the front of the room.
"Well. It seems some of you have done better than others during this down time. Next is the part I'm sure you've all been eagerly awaiting. The practical skills test. This is different than last time, however, as this time if you lose, you're out. No second chances. It doesn't matter how long you've been here. Pair up and fight. Winner gets to stay, loser goes home."
Naturlly, Ashley is eager for rematch with you. So much so, in fact, that she wants to personally punch you out of this Branch.

As Clay's last, desperate attack misses, Ashley smirks at him. The entire room seems to have been watching this fight. Some may even have been silently cheering for Clay, but none seemed to have the will to do so (or they were too entranced by the fight).
"Should have quit while you were behind, Monkey Boy. I might have let you walk away with some small shred of dignity left. Instead, I'm going to end this; and everybody will see just how weak you are."
She then throws a regular punch and lays him out flat. Smoke the Quilava prances around in victory.

For lack of any better idea of what to do, after lunch Clay heads north along the road to Cerulean, intending to go visit Kalani and hoping the gap between visits hasn't upset her too much. He's still not actually sure how to handle her affections but he's pretty sure trying to talk it out like a dispute in how to divide up dinner isn't it.
He keeps a wary eye out on the road north, but he isn't outright looking for trouble, just hoping to spot it if it comes looking for him. With any luck he might get to Cerulean without any major trouble, but he knows what his luck's looked like since he started on this whole "civilization" thing. He'd almost welcome a serious fight, one he wouldn't have to hold back in, just because he's been frustrated since losing to Ashley, but he's a little worried about getting in over his head, too. Maybe there'll be something in town he can help with, not necessarily a fight, but something.

Thankfully, nothing jumps out at Clay during his long solo walk up to Cerulean. He arrives in the sleepy coastal town around mid-afternoon, with the sun about halfway up in the western sky (~2:30-3PM). It's been starting to get colder lately, and trees have begun to shed their leaves as winter closes in. Up above his head, a flock of bird Pokemon zip by, on their way south to warmer climates. Mayor Kalani's house isn't difficult to spot, as per usual, but especially so with that giant blue reptile Pokemon outside of it. Drawing closer, Clay notices that its attention is fixated on a crowd of little blue reptiles that are running amok.
