"Yes, of course, Clay. James will always be around whenever you need him. If for some reason you need to contact me for something, speak to him. He knows how to get a hold of me." She offers Clay a sly wink at the last part as she rises to her feet with the grace of a dancer (or a very skilled martial artist) without even touching the ground with her hands.

It takes awhile, and even with directions Clay manages to get lost a few times, but eventually he reaches the smithy. The building itself is not so large, but the forge in back is definitely big, and Clay can hear the clanging of metal on metal from the back. Now, he could just go around back, but humans tend to prefer you go in through the door, so best to do that. This must be the place. Clay raises a hand and bangs on the door, hoping it's loud enough to be heard over the racket from the forge. He doesn't really want to upset the person he's hoping to get a weapon from by walking in completely uninvited.

The door opens swiftly, with a large, burly man standing there. "Customer?" He queries, his voice seeming to be naturally loud and deep. "Come in, come in. Look around. Let me know if you need anything." The man seems absolutely huge, even though Clay's used to seeing people taller than him. This guy looks bigger than Rei, even! He's like.. Ursaring sized! The shop itself seems like it can barely contain the man, as his head scrapes the ceiling... which would explain the large doors. Adorning the walls are any number of weapons, ranging from huge axes as big as Clay, to swords as long as his arm, and even the occasional hammer or club. Seems like one could find just about anything they wanted here. Except staves. None of those on display.

Clay's eyes widen as he looks around the smithy. The size of the weapons is almost as impressive as the size of the smith. The Fighting Branch keeps weapons around, of course - not all martial artists fight bare-handed, after all, as Clay and his staff attest - but the last time he saw a hammer that big it aimed at him in the hands of a certain crazy bird girl. And he's pretty sure those swords would give even Honedge pause.
He wonders whether he might be in the wrong place. Between the fact that most of the weapons seem to be sized more for the smith than for him, and the conspicuous absence of his specialty... well, he's sure they can work something out. He just hopes this isn't the start of a game of running around the city finding someone who can make him a good staff.
"R-right, hi. Nice to meet you. My name's Clay." Shoot, how do you interact with somebody who's probably going to wind up custom-making something for you? He had Tiki with him at Jojo's, to make introductions and also just pretty much drag him along regardless of confusion or reluctance. But hey, he's faced Mankeys, ghost girls, thieves, and Ashley, so he isn't going to let himself be intimidated by commerce. "I'm in the Adventurer's Guild, and when I asked around there about getting a new weapon made, they pointed me at you."
That last phrase doesn't sound quite right to him. Maybe he's using it wrong.

The smith seems to note Clay's apprehension about the size of the weapons on display. "Ha ha! Not to worry, my small customer-friend! These weapons on display here are display pieces. Meant for showing quality of details. You understand, yes? Well, even if not, do not worry. The wife can make you anything you want. Maces, swords, axes, anything!" He probably intended to grasp your hand in the usual human manner of greeting, but his size in comparison to Clay's means his hand alone envelops half his arm. He shakes Clay's hand/arm/whole body vigorously. "Pleasure to meet you, young Clay! I am called Smith. Yes! It is my profession and my name! My father was a clever man, yes." His jovial attitude seems meant to set Clay at ease; or perhaps that's just how he always is. Either way.
"So! Young Clay! What can Smith offer you today, hm?"

Clay can't help smiling, either way. Whether the attitude is calculated or not, it's hard to be too frightened of such friendliness - at least for Clay. Someone more timid might find Smith's joviality as intimidating as his anger.
"Well, like I said, I'm looking for a new weapon and the people I talked to sent me your way." Yes, that phrase works much better. "My style's changed and advanced and I'm looking for a new weapon to match it. I've mostly learned staff-fighting up to now. Are, uh, are metal staves a thing?"

Smith frowns, seeming confused. "Staff? What, you some kind of...monk or something? You don't look like one. Perhaps a nice...hammer? Or a club would do you good, yes? Yes, yes, I think so. Come come, we'll try one on for size, yes?" Smith walks over behind the counter and pulls out a much smaller-looking hammer. Well, smaller compared to him/the ones on display. Seems sized appropriately for Clay though. He comes back over and places it in Clay's hands with a grin, suggesting he 'give it a whirl'.
The hammer is, as one might expect, much heavier than the old wooden staff Clay has been carrying around since forever. It seems weighted towards the head, but is fairly balanced for a hammer.

"I'm not a monk, I'm a monkey." This is mostly a joke. "I did learn to fight from both of them, though."
Clay swings the hammer experimentally, first one-handed (not a good option), then two, but he looks a little skeptical. It fits Brenda's all-out fighting style well, but Clay doesn't go for full-power berserker assaults quite so much. "It's a really nice hammer. Last one I saw wasn't nearly this nice. But..."
He shakes his head. "I don't think fits with my style quite right. It's not being blunt, so much - I use a staff to move around in a fight as much as I use it to hit things with. I mean, look at me, and imagine I'm up against a guy your size, or... I dunno, an Ursaring. I'm getting better at taking hits, but you could probably knock me flat with one swing, or just grab me and squeeze. I gotta keep moving - in and out of reach, get behind the other guy, jump up into the air, spin around back..." He doesn't quite demonstrate, but he does hop around a little bit, back and forth, like shadow-boxing without the actual boxing.
"The staff is a... what was the word Master Nob used... it's a lever. Does that make sense?" Clay is shaky on how you use the word "momentum" and has never even heard of "torque", but he understands the basic idea of levers. Infernape are tool-users, too, after all. "The staff makes up for all the guys with longer arms and legs."

"Ohhh, so you want long weapon. Okay. I think I have something.." He takes the hammer back, setting it atop the counter, then after pacing around the room looking for whatever it is he wants Clay to try. After a few moments, he shouts 'a-ha! found it!' and comes back to Clay with... well, it's a long weapon, but not quite a staff. It has an axe head on one end, and a spike on the other. "This is a Pollaxe! You can attack with both ends of it, and do all the fancy tripping/disarming techniques you want." He offers it to Clay to try out.

"Huh..." Clay takes the pollaxe curiously, feeling the balance. It's still quite different from a staff, what with the ends not being equal, obviously, but it's about the right length, a little taller than him - most full-grown stick-fighters use six-foot staves, but of course Clay's a bit on the short side.
He steps away slightly to a more open spot where he's not going to hit anything accidentally and starts moving this way and that with the pollaxe, in odd little circular steps. He turns it end-over-end between his hands, and there's one slightly awkward moment where it looks like he might lose his grip before he grasps it firmly again - he's not used to the unequal weight between the axe head and the spike on the other end. But he regains his equilibrium quickly enough and completes the turn, moving the pollaxe in his hands speculatively.
"I just don't know..." He's a little cautious here - he doesn't want to offend Smith, who's been nothing but helpful and patient. On the other hand, he can hardly be the only customer Smith's had to be picky about his weapon. "It's kind of a style thing. Like, I have these two friends - one of them has this big two-edged sword -" which is alive, as much as ghosts can be said to be, and perfectly capable of using itself "- and the other one uses a much lighter one with more thrusting strikes. You wouldn't expect them to switch swords and be able to use them as well as their usual one, right? It's the same way with this."

Just as Smith is about to come up with some excuse or another for why Clay should totally keep using the pollaxe, the back door busts open. Compared to Smith, this woman is small (then again, *everyone* is small compared to this 7-ft, muscle-bound guy).
"Husband!" She shouts, causing Smith to flinch. "Are you trying to push things on our customers again?"
"N-noooo." He begins. "I was just trying to help the customer! He wanted a stick weapon for some reason, but I was trying to show him that a pollaxe is like a stick, but better!"
"Husband..." She warns. "If the customer wants a stick, then we will sell him one! What have I told you?"
"'We must see to the needs of the customer...'" he repeats as she pushes him away.
"My apologies, young man. I hope my husband wasn't being too pushy." Her voice is much softer now that she's not berating her husband. "Now, how can I help you? Smith said something about you wanting a 'stick'? I assume he means a staff weapon. It is not something we normally sell, but I would be happy to forge one for you if you like."

"Oh, uh..." Perhaps appropriately, Clay looks a bit, well, poleaxed. "Um, yes, that's what I'm looking for. Please."
He pauses for a moment to collect himself. Honestly, though, he was more than half expecting for one to need to be forged anyway. Presumably this will involve some waiting, though to be perfectly honest he's not actually sure how forging works beyond "take some metal and a big fire and a weapon comes out". But if it takes time for Jojo's to make clothes surely weapons will take time too. "That would be great, if you could! How much would it cost?"

"Well, a basic metal staff will cost you 2000 Crowns. If you want the best quality staff possible, then it is 4000. Oh, and it will take a couple of days to make. Rounded objects are more difficult to forge."
2000 - simple 4000 - fine Comes with Clay's choice of weapon moves.

"I'm definitely looking for the higher-quality one here." After all, if he just needed a basic one he'd keep using the one Master Nob gave him even if it has been through a lot already. If allowed, Clay will go into plenty of detail about specifics - the language is imprecise but he has a good idea of what he's looking for in general terms. The sturdy staff he's been using up to now is good for staggering a target, but he's looking more to be able to wear down a foe's defenses - and then to send in a flurry of strikes from unpredictable directions that make it hard to dodge. 4000 crowns is nearly half of the money Clay's got on hand, but this is definitely a worthwhile investment, even if it was only his rematches with Ashley, Brenda, and Tiki he was looking forward to and not the potential danger they're all in. He'll pay up gladly. "Great! So I can just come back and pick it up in a couple of days, then?"Going for a Fine weapon with Wear Down as an Adept move and Furious Strikes as a Master move.

Later on, as training breaks up into more individual sessions, Clay grabs Inspector Mason's attention just for a moment. In a low voice, he says, "I don't wanna take up too much time, I just wanted to ask, did you or our leader hear from the Psychic Branch lately?" It's as close as he wants to get without a more private space to is this training trip an evacuation because of what Rei told Anya.

Mason nods. "Yeah. Seems like it's a Guild-wide event with everyone going to different places to train or study in the field. People should really get out of their comfort zones a bit more often."

"Oh, yeah, absolutely." Clay nods. "Mt. Moon is a great place for training in. I guess I would say that, though, huh?"
He chuckles wryly and nods back over his shoulder at Fan. "Been meaning to visit home for a while. I'm sure Fan's gonna want to show off being full-grown. Gotta watch out for the Mankey on the east side of the mountain, though. They're jerks." Just an innocent conversation here, nothing to do with plots and schemes or threats to the world at all.

"Mm. I'd heard about them, but I don't think they'll bother a group as large as ours unless we enter their territory first. Even if that isn't the case, I will be there to ensure they aren't a problem. So what is 'your' Infernape Troop like, Clay? I know you said you were raised by them, but is there anything special about them beyond that that you're aware of?"

Clay shrugs fluidly and rubs the back of his neck. "Well, they're pretty accepting of outsiders, I guess. I mean, they raised me for thirteen years. It's not like they didn't know I wasn't a Chimchar... they probably thought I was some kinda funny-colored Sawk or somethin'. Uh..."
He taps his lip thoughtfully. Clay's never encountered any other Infernape troop, so while naturally he knows his troop is the best, he's not sure how different it is from any other. "The old elder was really strong on honor. I mean, that's not that unusual for Fighting-types but he wanted to be really sure us kids were good about it." "Old elder" is redundant, of course, but like most Pokémon, most of his troop didn't go in for human-style names. "I guess it was because of the feud he had going with the Mankey. You know what they're like, they go all crazy in a fight, and they like to gang up on opponents, and the elder was big on being controlled and disciplined. I guess that was a good thing for me, it helped me get used to human martial arts easier."
