Clay
The woman scoffs at your claims, clearly unimpressed. She raises a gloved hand and snaps her fingers, sending fire hurtling towards you! Humans normally can't do that.. and this is a big fire! You quickly leap aside again, feeling some of the hair on your left arm get burned clean off, leaving a light red mark across your forearm that indicates a 1st degree burn. And that was from it missing you by a few feet! You can only imagine what that would have done to you if you were even a bit slower.
"Bold claims for what amounts to a 'Wild Child'. Raised by monkeys, pah!" She narrows her eyes. "You seem to have what it takes to warrant allowing you entrance, as you haven't run screaming from the room yet. Whether you'll survive to reach the upper echelons of this Path... well, we'll just have to see."
She sweeps her gaze across those gathered in the room.
"All of you who remain are those who have the will to press forward! Your trials will be as harsh and unforgiving as an open flame. Handled with care, it becomes a powerful tool..." Her gaze lingers on a few of the students, yourself included, as she continues. "Handle it poorly, and you will be consumed by it. Your first trial begins now. Find a partner and battle them. I don't care who wins at this point, I want to see what you're all made of. BEGIN!"
The 'Lady of Flame's' speech finished, the various students quickly pair off, finding spots just far enough away from others to avoid cross-fire.

Wow, touchy. Clay rubs his singed arm, wincing. Good thing he didn't actually haul off and add a direct challenge of his own to his little brag there; he has a feeling she'd have taken him up on it and outright burned him down. He has to wonder where she learned to do that. Either way, though, he's going to remember her being dismissive about his family.
He collects Sandy - he can't just leave the poor guy sitting by the door - and his dropped staff, and swaggers up to someone who doesn't have a partner yet, as if he didn't just get his boast smacked down. "Hey there, I'm Clay! Want to battle? Pokémon only or anything-goes, I'm good for either one. Got to warn you, though, I won't go easy!"

A girl approximately your age with dark red hair seems to have no partner. Possibly because everyone who sees her quickly goes the other way and finds someone else to partner up with.
"Hmph. I guess if you're the only one brave or stupid enough to challenge me, then I'll accept! Just Pokemon this time. Two each! Blaze, you're up first!"
The trainer sends out a small bipedal pokemon.
"Magby!" It shouts.

Clay has absolutely no idea why everyone seems to be avoiding this girl, apart from the fact that her attitude kind of reminds him of the fire boss-lady. "Two on two sounds good to me! Fan, let's show her who's boss!"Fan makes an acrobatic leap to land facing the Magby and flashes a rather threatening grin at it. Sandy would have the type advantage, but he doesn't know how strong yet his opponent is. He's used to Fan, and she's no slouch even against opponents her fire won't faze. "Char!"Clay realizes he's forgotten something. "Oh, what's your name, by the way?"Clay's Standard: use Agility Training as [Orders] on Fan (Priority (Limited))
Fan's Initiative: 18 (+4 from Agility Training [Training], +4 from Agility Training [Orders])

"Yeah? I survived a decade and a half in the wild before I ever met another human. And that taught me that if you wanna call yourself superior, you'd better prove it!"
Despite his bravado, Clay draws in a sharp breath when the poisonous gas catches Fan on the inhale and she's left choking on the fumes. That really doesn't sound good - she's turning a rather unfortunate color for a Chimchar. "Come on, shake it off, sis! Hit him with a Double Kick!"

Clay winces again as the flames scorch Fan, almost like he can feel the heat himself. Even with her flame-resistant fur, that's enough to hurt when she's still reeling from the smog. One more solid hit and she's down. "Stay with me, Fan! Another Double Kick!"
Fan launches a pair of high kicks at the Magby. The first misses entirely, which throws her off enough for the second to just barely strike home. Clay makes a frustrated noise that might, if it was louder, qualify as a screech. He'd been hoping this attack would take Blaze down, which looks less likely now - if it doesn't go down, Sandy can probably handle it from here, but he doesn't like Fan going down so easily.

Clay lets out a sigh of relief when the kick lays the Magby out despite the flub on the first attack, but his relief only lasts so long - that Cyndaquil sure comes out swinging. The wild charge sends Fan flying, but she's already unconscious by the time she hits the ground. He recalls her quickly. "You're gonna pay for that one! Come on, Sandy, show her what you've got! Water Gun!"
Sandy's just been sitting on the sidelines up to now, watching and occasionally wincing in sympathetic pain. Now he hops forward, froglike, and spits a jet of water at Smoke. "Kip kip! Mudkip!"

The Cyndaquil gets soaked, and clearly does not appreciate it.
"Figures... Smoke, use that special technique I taught you!"
Cyndaquil's flame vents burn a little brighter and it begins powering up a small orb of green-ish energy in front of its mouth. After it is fully charged, it unleashes a small burst of energy in a circle around it.

Sandy stumbles back a little as he's caught in the ring of energy; he obviously likes it about as much as the Cynadquil liked getting drenched. He takes a couple of quick steps back, obviously hoping to avoid getting caught in that blast again.
"Don't let up, Sandy! We've got him on the run!" Despite the powerful hit, Clay's grinning again, teeth bared as he watches. If he can just get a solid enough it in before the Cyndaquil manages another one of those energy attacks... "Another Water Gun!"
From a somewhat safer distance this time, Sandy fires another stream of water Smoke's way.

Sandy hunkers down as the fireball washes over him, ducking the worst of the blast and letting his own moist skin foil the flames. "Nice save, Sandy! Come on, Water Gun one more time, right in his stupid face!"
Yeah, Clay may be just a little on edge. Sandy obeys anyway, spraying more water at the Cyndaquil. He's not exactly keen on taking more punishment, himself.

Ashely pales as her Cyndaquil is knocked out cold by the watery blast.
"No.. no no no no no.. we aren't supposed to lose! Not to a newbie! Type disadvantage or not..." She furtively glances in the direction of the Lady of Fire, who locks eyes with her, then narrows them menacingly. Ashley gulps as she recalls her Cyndaquil and flees towards the dormitory area.
"You just got lucky, kid!" She calls back as she runs. "Just wait, I'll get stronger and DESTROY you next time!"

Clay kneels down and hugs Sandy tightly. "Great job! I was kinda worried there when she pulled out that green thing but that last save was awesome! We sure showed her, huh?" Sandy looks a little embarrassed at all the praise but he's still got a wide amphibian smile on his face.
Clay makes a ridiculous face over the top of Sandy's fin at Ashley's retreating figure. "I told you! You wanna call yourself superior, you better back it up!"
He straightens up with Sandy cradled in his arms, glancing around to see how the other battles in the room have turned out. Hopefully this isn't going to be a whole tournament thing because he's pretty sure they're more or less wiped out. That wicked Smog attack right at the start pretty much sealed Fan's fate.

Looking around, it seems most of the other battles are winding down as well, with most members having only 1-2 Pokemon to begin with. Once they have all finished, 'The Lady of Fire' instructs all the winners to go and get their Pokemon healed and return. Upon said return, you notice that the room is significantly hotter than it was when you left. Even with all those battles going on earlier. As soon as the last person returns, the doors shut on their own, sealing everyone in the room.
"Your next trial is simple: Survive."
With no further explanation, the instructor leaves the room, sealing the set of doors leading to the dormitory and effectively locking everyone in the room. Several of the newer folks begin to panic.
(Make 6 Focus checks. 1 for every increment of 10 minutes over the next hour. Describe how you cope with the ever-increasing heat and panicked students.)

Clay has to admit, he's glad to be getting his Pokémon healed. He's less glad that apparently their next test is to be locked in an oven. Between this and throwing fire at people, he's starting to suspect that Fire Lady doesn't actually like having students. For a little while he wonders whether the test is just to see who panics when the doors lock. Those doubts are pretty much gone by the fifteen-minute mark, not that Clay has a whole lot of sense of time. A little past the halfway point the heat gets to be too much for him and he blacks out... only to come to with being hosed down by Sandy. He rubs the Mudkip's head gratefully. "Thanks, buddy. Came through again."Between a nice soaking and his renewed focus, the rest of the trial goes a lot easier, though he starts giving the panicking ones dirty looks. Being uncomfortable for extended periods makes him irritable, and risking heatstroke definitely qualifies. (Not that Clay knows what heatstroke is...) The first half hour doesn't seem so bad. Not like you haven't been really sweaty before. Around that time, a few of the other prospective adventurers begin to drop like flies. By the 40 minute mark, even you are beginning to have trouble. You think you even passed out for a minute or two. If it wasn't for your Mudkip spraying you with water to cool you off, you might have stayed unconscious longer. Thanks to this, though, you manage to pull through the worst of it, and the remaining 20 minutes of the hour you were all locked in the 'oven-like' room go by smoothly.
(Depending on whether you have mudkip try to help others out or not, anywhere from half to 3/4 of the new recruits with you will pass out from the intense heat.)

Clay looks around at some of the others, wincing as he sees how many pass out. "Let's see if we can help a couple other people out, huh, Sandy? Let me know if we're stretching it too far."
He takes Sandy around to try and help out some of the worst-off of the other students, trusting Sandy to let him know if he gets too dry. There's only so much water one Mudkip can be carrying.
