A dark haired man with a grim but determined look on his face stands on a cliff overlooking a dark, gothic town, a sword on his side and a Lucario standing proudly next to him.
A college student with large bags under her eyes who obviously needs both sleep and a shower types away frantically on her keyboard trying to finish a paper for her class the next morning. She should have started it ages ago, but like all college students she procrastinated far too long. An open DS sits next to her, battle music from a pokemon game looping endlessly for hours on end, forgotten.
A trainer trudges through the Hoenn desert. There's sand in places he'd rather not have it and his goggles are far too tight, giving him a headache. The pay for finding these fossils better be worth it...
An ensign on the HMCS Vancouver scrambles around the ship in a panic. Named after the city back on Earth, it was the pride of the Canadian fleet of spacecraft. Operative word was. They had been attacked by an unknown enemy and been utterly destroyed. She scrambled into the escape pod as quickly as she could, strapped herself in and pressed the button, the harsh ejection forcing the air out of her lungs. As the pod streaked away she saw one final barrage of missiles turn the already floundering ship into a pile of rubble.
Suddenly, there's a bright light and a sharp pain and the world goes black. Each one of the four slowly opens their eyes and look around in confusion. There's a heavy weight around their necks, and they slowly realize they're restrained to a chair. The room is dark except for a bright blue monitor hovering a few inches in front of their faces. The screen flickers, uncomfortably bright before slowly words flicker onto the screen. "Don't disappoint me." Then, there's a sharp prick on the neck and the world goes black once more.
Hello, and welcome to my game! Hopefully the intro has intrigued you a bit. If not, why are you still reading this again? Oh well, I won't criticize your life choices.
Premise: So, what is this game? Well, that's somewhat hard to describe, but I suppose that the best descriptor, at least for now, is mystery. Your characters, for some reason or another have been chosen. One moment they were going about their normal lives in their own worlds and in their own times. The next instant, the world was dark and they were captives of some mysterious organization/being/thing/, and as for what happens next? Well, that's what we're going to discover together! If you have specific questions I will try to answer to the best of my ability without giving too much away, but hopefully you'll forgive me if I don't give away very much!
Player Characters: So, who are you? Well, that's for you to decide! Your characters can be from any world and any time you desire. Perhaps they come from our world, either past, present, or future. Perhaps they come from a futuristic dystopia or a fantasy world full of magic. Perhaps there are pokemon from where they come, perhaps there aren't. Perhaps they even come from the main pokemon world! Wherever they come from, for some reason they were chosen, seen as special, and whisked away. One important thing to note: this is not a crossover game. I do not want any characters from already existing media in this campaign. I would also highly prefer that your characters do not come from already existing media, but this is not a 100% rejection like crossover characters are. However, it will most likely be harder for you to get in if you do pull them from an already existing media. Where your character comes from is a big part of who they are, especially for this game, so I'm giving you an opportunity to completely create the entire world they come from if you so wish. If they do come from your own world, I don't need a whole write-up on that world, just attempt to give me the feel of it in your character's backstory. In terms of what I'm looking for in applications, the fluff of your character is the most important part for me. I could rather care less about the mechanics. What I'm really looking for is interesting things from your backstory to play with and mess with your character.
Expectations: I'm looking for 4-6 players who are willing to pour as much love into the setting as I have. This is going to be a pretty narrative game. I have no plan or no script, only ideas. Therefore, I'm looking for proactive players who are willing to poke and prod at what I give them, and even what I don't give them, and truly engage with the world. I do best when I'm improvising, and the best players to help me with that are those that interact with the world and with each other. I'm not going to hand hold you through a story with specific plot points thought out ahead of time, that's not how I do things. This story is going to be built around you and your characters specifically, it is your story. I'm just here to provide you with a hopefully interesting premise and world to explore. I expect at least 1 post every 2-3 days from players, obviously being a bit more forgiving if you let me know if you're going to have trouble with that. I tend to like to move fast and I'm happiest when I have to post 2-3 times a day, but I won't hold my players to that.
As for what you can expect from me, I'll be pretty honest. I am rather new to PTU as a system. That being said, I am far from new to roleplay and roleplaying games, going on 10-ish years of being involved with them. PbP is a good system for me so that I won't be stressed to know all of the rules immediately, and I honestly expect you will see no lack of quality because of this. Also, I expect and hope this will be a highly story driven campaign, as such I should hopefully have even less pressure on me in the mechanics area. That being said, leveling is probably going to be the hardest thing for me because of the narrative nature of this campaign and my lack of experience. I'm planning on doing milestone leveling, so that should help with that, but feel free to call me out if you feel I'm not leveling fast enough. Hell, feel free to call me out on anything and we can have a discussion on it, I promise I won't be offended.
Character Creation:
You will start as trainer level three. You will start with no pokemon. I repeat, no pokemon. If you include pokemon in your backstory, you will most likely be interacting with and possibly receiving them at some point. I will also somewhat pay attention to wishlists, but I want to make it clear that it's very possible you won't be receiving anything on your wishlist for a while, if ever. But, I don't really know! All depends on where the story goes. No starting money or items. If you take a weapon class, don't worry, I'm sure you can get creative and find something!
No hard age limits, but children characters in this campaign will be somewhat iffy, so I'd advise against any characters younger than 14, and I would suggest something higher than that. There's no maximum age limit, but older characters may have a hard time in the setting. If you're fine with that, cool! It'd make some interesting roleplay.
All material from The Blessed and the Damned is banned at character creation. Feel free to have characters chosen by the gods in their backstories, but your gods have no power here. From Do Porygon Dream of Electric Sheep, Jailbreaker is allowed, everything else is soft-banned. Talk to me if you'd like to take other things from the book. Core Book and Game of Throhs is open game, with the exception of Warper being soft-banned. Talk to me if you're interested in a Warper character. All playtest material will be used unless someone really tries to convince me otherwise.
Backstory/Personality is the most important part of the sheet, this is really what I'll be evaluating when choosing characters. If you would include a part detailing the specifics of what was happening to them/what they were doing at the time of being whisked away, that would be great but it isn't required.
Oh, and please use the character sheet linked in the sidebar, that is my preferred sheet.
Alright, that's about it! Deadline for applications is tentatively 11:59pm PST on Tuesday the 12th of January. It may be extended if there is a low amount of interest/applications for this game.
There will be a pre-game skype chat for questions during character creation and general tomfoolery. If you'd like to be added, either pm me your skype username, post it here, or send me a request on skype saying that you're interested in the game. My username on skype is haybalebarn. Skype is the best place for questions, but feel free to post in this thread as well!
Let me know if you think I've missed anything in this post, otherwise we'll see if there's any interest in a slightly different game such as this!
Edit: I've decided to allow the creation of a level 10 pokemon to put on your sheet if you so desire. This pokemon may have 1 inheritance move following the playtest rules. If you create this pokemon, you will be guaranteed to get it relatively soon into the story. It may be from your character background or completely new to them. This is optional and in no way required, I simply decided that I wanted to provide the option to those who like to have a choice over what their first pokemon will be.
